Wintry conditions continue tonight, with snow showers continuing to feed into Scotland and Northern Ireland and bitterly cold temperatures. For most, a dry, clear and chilly night, with frost forming in many areas. Some brisk winds in the north fading through the night, calmer elsewhere. Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place for Northern Ireland and north and west Scotland, and a yellow snow warning is in effect for the south, with an amber warning for snow for the southwest. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the evening of 08/01/2025. 00:00Hello, whilst large parts of the country have just had a dry cold Wednesday, the
00:05top and tail have been seeing plenty more wintry showers. Quite a bit of wet
00:09weather across the south, a mixture of rain, sleet and snow has been edging in
00:13here and the snow has been causing a bit of disruption particularly over parts of
00:17southwest England. We have an amber weather warning in place. Snow showers
00:22continue to pack in across northern Scotland and the north of Northern
00:24Ireland. Icy conditions here. The wet weather in the south will clear through
00:28but still through this evening the potential for further disruption with
00:31sleet and snow across those southern counties before tending to edge away by
00:35the time we get to the early hours. With a bit more cloud left behind however
00:39that will keep the temperatures up a little bit across the southeast. Elsewhere
00:43a hard frost and it could well turn icy particularly as these showers come into
00:48West Wales, parts of Cornwall and those wintry showers continue over the north
00:52of Northern Ireland and northern Scotland. Down to minus four minus five
00:56that's in towns and cities. Rural parts could get down to minus double digits
01:00and as well as all that some thick freezing fog patches for parts of
01:03Northern Ireland and northern England may well get denser through the night. So
01:07plenty of things to be a little bit wary of for Thursday morning's commute. You'll
01:13have to defrost the car first thing. There'll still be those showers coming
01:16into West Wales and Cornwall. Some snow mixed in and potentially icy. Same goes
01:21for the north of Northern Ireland and more snow showers coming in across
01:24northern Scotland. Still a bit of fog around as well. That should clear. The
01:28showers will tend to fade certainly in parts of southwest England and
01:31Northern Ireland and actually for many places it's going to be a fine and sunny
01:36if somewhat cold day. Still a nagging wind blowing across the far northeast
01:41making it feel even colder here. Temperatures generally after starting
01:46four or five degrees below freezing getting up to two or three Celsius above
01:49freezing maybe five or six across southernmost parts of England. But as I
01:53said feeling colder in that wind along some of those easternmost coasts. And
01:58pretty quickly again on that Thursday evening those temperatures will fall
02:02away and we'll see another hard frost forming. Again some fog patches are
02:06possible. Most places dry but still some wintry showers coming in across
02:10Aberdeenshire and down to the southwest. Now the weather system edging in here
02:15that will bring some wet weather. It will also throw a bit more cloud up. So
02:18southwestern areas may just about stay above freezing. Parts of Devon, Cornwall
02:22Isles of Scilly and the Channel Isles. But elsewhere again down to minus three to
02:27minus five in urban areas. Could get down to minus 15 minus 16 where there's snow
02:32lying on the ground over northern England and parts of Scotland. Coldest
02:36night for quite some time. So a hard frost for Friday morning. Again a little
02:41bit of fog but again many places fine and dry with some winter sunshine. Main
02:45exception will be the southwest. More clouds spilling in through Wales,
02:48southern counties of England and some wet weather. And again it's going to be a
02:52mixture here. Mostly rain close to the coast but over hills there will be some
02:56snow. And even at lower levels we could see some further snow flurries coming in.
03:00So that is an area we need to watch for Friday. And even if it is rain that we
03:05see falling onto frozen surfaces potentially turning things really quite
03:08icy during Friday as temperatures struggle. But eventually milder areas
03:13edging into the far southwest. Generally though again another cold one two or
03:17three Celsius at best. And feeling colder as the cloud spills in across
03:23Wales and the Midlands. That will continue to edge in during Friday
03:26evening as this weather front bumps its way slowly but surely in. But high
03:30pressure is building in. So really taking the sting out of that weather front as it
03:36edges in. But it will eventually also start to usher in some milder conditions.
03:41Going to take its time before it turns milder in the east. But gradually
03:44temperatures will be ticking up a little bit as we go through this weekend.
03:48Plenty more on all of that. All we can expect into next week if you watch this
03:52week's 10-day trend. That is available on YouTube so why not subscribe.
