Northern and western Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland continue to see snow and sleet arriving from the north, with accumulations especially in upland areas. Clearer and dry across much of Wales, the Midlands and northern England, feeling particularly crisp in the cold. A band of rain will affect the south of England, which may turn to snow and sleet in isolated upland areas. A yellow snow and ice warning is in effect for northern and western Scotland and Northern Ireland, a yellow ice warning is also out for northern England and Wales, and a yellow snow warning is currently out for the south. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 08/01/2025. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Aidan McGivern.

00:00Hi there, it's another cold day out there for all of us and there will be further snow
00:04in places. Northern and Western Scotland as well as parts of Northern Ireland will continue
00:10to see sleet and snow showers arriving from the north, rain around coasts of Northern
00:15Ireland but some centimetres building up inland from any of these snow showers. Likewise for
00:21Northern and Western Scotland the risk of icy patches out there and further snow showers
00:26with the build-up most notably over higher parts of Northern Scotland, a few more centimetres
00:31over the hills. For much of the northern two-thirds of the UK though it's a dry and bright crisp
00:37winter's day, plenty of sunshine for Northern England, Southern Scotland for example. A
00:42build-up of cloud across Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia and that's because we've got
00:46a system moving up from the south to bring an area of rain in from the Atlantic for southern
00:52counties of England and South Wales. But as that mixes with the cold air there's the
00:57chance of some sleet and snow in places. Especially for areas north of Exeter we're likely to
01:03see some snow as the winds become more north-easterly and bring that colder air back in. But it's
01:11one of those marginal situations where it will be a mixture of rain and sleet at lower
01:16levels and even any falling snow at lower levels may not settle everywhere. So perhaps
01:20a centimetre or two for lower parts of Southern England and South Wales could cause some disruption
01:26of course given that this is a busy part of the country with a lot of traffic through
01:30the M4 for example. But the largest snow totals are likely over higher ground, Salisbury Plain
01:36into Dartmoor Exmoor for example, five to ten centimetres. So yes, certainly something
01:43to watch out for if you've got travel plans during the rest of Wednesday, that mixture
01:48of rain, sleet and snow across southern parts of the UK. It's going to feel cold wherever
01:54you are and as that system continues during the evening temperatures will drop and surface
02:00temperatures are likely to drop as well. So again adding to that risk around the rush
02:04hour of some snow disruption in places, hence the yellow warning. It does pull away though
02:09and it turns drier and clearer across much of the UK overnight. That leads to a widespread
02:14frost, icy patches where we've seen precipitation and temperatures widely minus three to minus
02:20five Celsius minus double figures where we've got snow cover across northern parts of the
02:24country. So a very cold start to Thursday but a bright start for most. We've got further
02:30showers running into parts of Wales, northern Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland as well.
02:35Away from these showers, away from these clumps of cloud that are coming through on the north
02:39northwest wind, it's going to be a bright afternoon. Plenty of crisp winter sunshine,
02:44temperatures up to one to three Celsius in places, staying below freezing I suspect over
02:49higher ground and where we've got snow cover. So that sets the scene going into Friday.
02:54We've got widely cold conditions, widespread frost and icy patches once again on Thursday
02:59night but another Atlantic system is attempting to move in at this stage and this is another
03:06rain-bearing system bringing milder air and on the leading edge of that we're likely to
03:12see some issues with snow and ice. But it will be transient and it will be patchy in
03:19many places because behind that system we've got a rush of milder air returning for the
03:24weekend and that's going to lift temperatures throughout Saturday and Sunday initially in
03:31the west and then later on in the east so that it's a much milder start to next week
03:36We'll keep you updated on all of that and you can follow those updates on our YouTube channel.
03:40Bye bye.
