17 December - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Good morning. It's a bit of a murky, gloomy start to the day for some of us.
00:05Some low cloud, particularly towards the south, bringing some hill fog and a few spots of drizzly rain.
00:10We are, however, seeing our winds strengthening already.
00:13Due to an area of low pressure currently to the west of us, this is going to push in,
00:17bringing some unsettled weather to many parts.
00:19As well as this, you'll have no doubt noticed that it has been a mild start to the week,
00:24temperatures above average for the time of year.
00:26That's because we are dragging in some mild air across many parts of the country.
00:31Now, this low is actually quite a flabby low, so it is going to bring some strong winds,
00:35but perhaps not quite as strong as you might otherwise expect.
00:38As well as this, we're going to see some wet weather pushing through as we go through today into tomorrow.
00:43Then we are likely to see another system tracking its way across central, southern parts through tomorrow,
00:48bringing more rain here for a time before a ridge of high pressure builds as we go into Thursday,
00:53so the weather should quieten down for a time.
00:56I emphasize time because there's another system waiting out towards the northwest
01:00that's going to push in as we go through Friday.
01:02The other thing to bear in mind with this ridge of high pressure, change in our wind direction,
01:06and as a result, we're going to have some colder air coming in,
01:09so our temperatures are going to drop quite markedly.
01:12It is going to feel markedly colder by Thursday than it does so at the moment.
01:16However, back to the here and now and looking at the details,
01:19quite a cloudy picture across Scotland and Northern Ireland through this morning,
01:24and there will be some outbreaks of rain feeding into the far west of England and Wales as well.
01:29Towards more central eastern parts, likely to stay largely dry through the day.
01:33There may be a bit more cloud around than on Monday,
01:36but even here, some sunshine breaking through at times.
01:40Do need to be aware, though, the winds will be strengthening.
01:43It is going to turn quite blustery for pretty much all of us,
01:46but the strongest winds will be across western and northern parts,
01:49especially towards the coast and over higher ground, risk of gales in some places.
01:53And we do also need to account for the fact there could be some mountain wave activity,
01:57so the winds bouncing over the mountains,
01:59and then we could have some strong winds downwind of any higher ground as well.
02:04Temperatures are above average for the time of year.
02:06Like I said, we have mild air across us at the moment.
02:09Most places getting into double figures, perhaps highs around 13,
02:12possibly 14 Celsius for some of us,
02:14but obviously the windy weather is going to make it feel colder than this.
02:18Later on, and as we go through into this evening,
02:21after a largely dry day towards the southeast, the rain will eventually arrive here.
02:25So outbreaks of rain across much of the country, some heavy bursts,
02:28also those strong winds to watch out for,
02:30so a pretty cloudy, wet at times and windy night to come.
02:34With the mild air, perfect ingredients for a mild night.
02:38Temperatures not dropping a huge amount at all.
02:40Most places staying in high single figures, if not double digits,
02:44so a very mild, if not unsettled start to the day on Wednesday.
02:48As we go through Wednesday itself, however,
02:51we are going to see the weather quietening down for a time,
02:54quite a bit of cloud and outbreaks of rain, strong winds to start,
02:57but a lot of that clears away towards the east.
02:59And then there will be some sunshine in between the blustery showers,
03:03particularly across parts of Scotland,
03:05before that other system that I highlighted earlier comes in,
03:08and then we're going to see some heavier, more persistent rain
03:10pushing in across central southern parts of England and Wales
03:13as we go through later on Wednesday.
03:16With that, though, we are going to see our temperatures rising even further.
03:19They could be a touch higher than today,
03:22and so 13, 14 Celsius quite widely, mid-teens for many places,
03:26although further north across parts of Scotland,
03:28we are going to see temperatures dropping through the day
03:30as some colder air starts to make its way in.
03:34As we go through later on this week,
03:36we are going to see some drop in temperatures,
03:39so it is going to be colder by Thursday, like I already said,
03:42and also some unsettled weather at times.
03:44So you'll want to keep up to date with the forecast.
03:46There'll be more information about what's to come
03:48on our deep dive with Honour later on.
03:50Bye-bye.
