00:00Analysts say frequent blackouts in Sabah may be a hot issue at the next state election
00:07if left unresolved after a recent occurrence in seven districts and the threat of another
00:12potentially engulfing the entire state next year.
00:15O.E. Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the issue had become more acute
00:21in recent years, with the state suffering frequent drops in voltage due to overwhelming
00:26demand.
00:28He said this problem should be addressed before the next state election to prevent it from
00:33impacting political outcomes.
00:37University Malaysia Sabah's Bilchir Bala said the issue could pose a major headache for
00:41both the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-led state government and the federal unity government as voters
00:47may perceive their inability to handle the issue as weak governance.
00:52He said this could drive Sabahans to vote for change at the next state election.
00:57Although Putrajaya has granted Sabah the autonomy to regulate its own electricity supply, Bilchir
01:03said the state still needs federal assistance in terms of finances.
01:07He said continuing to assist Sabah in this area would reflect the unity government's
01:11commitment to the well-being of Sabahans.
