00:00What's the need for harsh government measures if we're not in a crisis?
00:06Ex-Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim has backed former Bursa Chairman Ambika Srinivasan's claim
00:11that the current Malaysian unity government is the most dictatorial in Malaysia's history.
00:17This comes after government spokesman Fahmi Fazil defended Putrajaya's move to impose
00:21social media licensing laws by saying the current government did not conduct obslalang
00:26or attack demonstrators.
00:28In a post on X, Zaid dismissed Fahmi's comparison to obslalang under former Prime Minister Dr.
00:33Mahathir Mohamad, arguing that the situation then could not be compared with today's.
00:38While he acknowledged that Mahathir's actions in 1987 were questionable, he said they were
00:42understandable due to the power struggle within UMNO and the brewing judicial crisis then.
00:48The former MP also said Mahathir used the now-repealed Internal Security Act's detention
00:52power sparingly after 1987 during his 23-year rule.
00:57In contrast, Zaid said the unity government has a two-thirds majority in parliament and
01:02faces no significant crisis, making its actions more concerning.
