00:00ASEAN is discussing the possibility of appointing a permanent special envoy to address the crisis
00:07in Myanmar, the foreign ministry said.
00:10Ministry Secretary-General Amran Zind said the bloc continues to play a central role
00:15in facilitating dialogue and cooperation among its members, including Myanmar.
00:20He said that as this year's ASEAN chair, Malaysia will play a key role in working with
00:25member states to find a solution to effectively address the crisis in Myanmar.
00:30Amran said Malaysia will seek to expand its efforts beyond ASEAN to include external partners
00:36who have been supportive of improving the situation on the ground.
00:40Amran reaffirmed ASEAN's commitment to a Myanmar-led solution, in line with a five-point
00:45consensus adopted by the regional bloc, which calls for the adoption of various measures
00:50to address the crisis.
00:52The situation in Myanmar remains dire after a military coup four years ago ousted the
00:57democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy.
01:03The coup sparked widespread protests and civil unrest across the country, leading to violent
01:08crackdowns by the military junta.
01:11Hundreds of thousands have been displaced by the violence.
