00:00You touched on Myanmar and the idea of lasting peace, rather the ideal of lasting peace.
00:06What do you see as being necessary steps to be taken by the ASEAN countries to get to
00:14that ideal of lasting peace?
00:17Thailand has always insisted that we would support the five-point consensus.
00:25It has always been Thailand's stance that to achieve that goal, there can be many ways.
00:31And we believe that there's no one-size-fits-all.
00:37As long as we can come to peaceful and unified Myanmar through a Myanmar-led, Myanmar-owned
00:44solution, Thailand is willing to help every ASEAN chair thus far.
00:52This is what Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikontet Balangkun had to say about the stalled
00:58peace process in Myanmar.
01:00Balangkun added that ASEAN members have observed limited progress with the five-point consensus
01:06on Myanmar, aiding to reconsideration of strategies.
01:11Of course, we realise that the SAC would be the main player that we have to talk to.
01:19However, we think that it might be fruitful to have a more open dialogue with all parties
01:26concerned in Myanmar.
01:29ASEAN's five-point plan, introduced in April 2021 after Myanmar's military coup, aimed
01:35to end violence and facilitate dialogue, but has faced challenges in implementation.
01:41Despite hosting informal ASEAN-related meetings, analysts say key stakeholders like Myanmar's
01:47national unity government and ethnic groups remain sidelined.
01:52In November, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim proposed that ASEAN might have to carve out
01:57Myanmar temporarily to prevent hindrance to the group's overall progress, with the Philippines
02:02set to assume the ASEAN chair next year instead of Myanmar.
