Hall of Famer @OfficialTyLaw joins! What does Law think of the Pats win over Bears? Does Ty think they can make a run?
Transcript
00:00And Ty, good morning, how are ya?
00:02Good morning, guys, how you guys doing, man?
00:04Great, I was wondering if Bill Belichick ever took you
00:08to the ground round, the restaurant chain.
00:13No, hell, they still got a ground round around here?
00:16It's coming back, it's making a comeback,
00:18and so apparently he took Rodney Harrison there
00:22on his free agent visit, so I was wondering
00:24if it was Bill's go-to when it came to restaurants.
00:29But if he didn't take you there.
00:30No, I didn't, no, it took me to the ground round
00:34on the free agent visit, I might have had to think twice
00:36whether I'm coming here next, at least go out there
00:38and get a nice meal, damn, that's letting me know
00:42right now what we negotiating with.
00:46Well, they saving all the money for you to pay you,
00:49that's why they take you to the ground round,
00:51they wanna have more money to give you in your contract.
00:54Yeah, that's damn sure how I felt when I got drafted
00:57up here, though, when they put me up at the end zone,
00:59I'm like, damn, I done got drafted right back
01:02to Alabama.
01:03Well, there weren't many options other than
01:05the end zone motel that were in the area,
01:07I mean, things have changed a little bit.
01:10Yeah, but hey, Greg, I woulda, I mean, at the time,
01:15I coulda, you coulda gotten, I woulda stayed
01:1720 minutes away, I mean, damn, but end zone, man,
01:21and they end up living there for six months,
01:23thanks to some people out there that didn't wanna
01:25get out the house, Scott Zolak.
01:28And the end zone was a dump.
01:33All right, well.
01:34Oh, man, they had some good-ass wings, though.
01:39So listen, big win for these guys,
01:42a domineering win for these guys over the Bears on Sunday.
01:49I mean, it was a great win, and A9, Saxton,
01:53when we talk about domineering and all that,
01:55I mean, let's call it what it was.
01:57It was two bad teams, and who was gonna play
02:00the best football was two bad teams right now.
02:02I mean, we got a lot to, like I said, look forward to,
02:06but right now, people trying to,
02:10people paying for their job, Wiggy,
02:11see, they gonna be back at training camp next year, man.
02:14Let's keep it a buck.
02:16So, okay, so keep it real, as Wiggy would say, no cap.
02:21This is not something to get overly excited about.
02:25No, it's not, it's not.
02:27I mean, I think anytime you win,
02:29because everyone's out there working hard,
02:31don't get me wrong, I mean, the professionals,
02:33I mean, you got pride, you practice hard, you wanna win,
02:37but 9-Sax, great.
02:41I mean, Gerard Mayer, he threw everything,
02:43but the kitchen sink on him.
02:45I mean, 9-Sax is amazing,
02:46but let's just look at who you're playing,
02:48you know what I mean?
02:49You're playing against a formidable team,
02:52and you can get more excited about it,
02:53but it was just, the best thing about that day
02:56when people traveled to the game,
02:58it was beautiful weather in Chicago.
03:01Ty, that's one of the things
03:02that we were all talking about in here.
03:04Courtney had, you know, I think your opinion
03:06is that this team could make the playoffs,
03:08they could go 6-1.
03:09I thought that they're not gonna really get true respect
03:12until they beat the Cardinals in Arizona
03:16or in Buffalo Week 15 or 16.
03:20Now that's saying something,
03:22you know what you're working with.
03:23I mean, what guys are gonna be around for the future,
03:25but you have to win a game of substance,
03:28somebody with a better record, a better team,
03:32not a rookie quarterback,
03:33even though we have a rookie quarterback.
03:35You know, you gotta put a stamp on it somewhere,
03:37and Chicago just said,
03:39so I'm not getting that excited about it.
03:41I'm happy for the win, but I'm not that excited.
03:45When you look at the team and look at the game
03:48and the future, I mean, that's not telling me anything.
03:50This game right here is really not.
03:53So, Ty, you don't want to buy into, like,
03:54Keon White, after the game,
03:56was asked what was clicking for the defense,
03:58and he said, we're a bunch of young guys,
04:00we've faced injuries,
04:01and we finally figured out how to play with each other,
04:04so that's what you're witnessing now?
04:05Like, that's an optimistic way to look at this team.
04:13Oh, they got it together now, huh?
04:16You know, we injuries, everybody's back,
04:20now we're clicking.
04:21Man, do it next week.
04:22You can't say that over one game like that with nine stats.
04:25I mean, but I get it.
04:26You're supposed to, you know,
04:28round a team up, what you say, but come on, man.
04:31I mean, I don't think you just figured it out
04:34just now versus Chicago.
04:36Like I said, do that against Buffalo or Ravens
04:39or Kansas City.
04:41Do that against somebody like that,
04:42then you can, you know, talk like that.
04:46Well, they have, the easy games are ahead of them.
04:50I mean, Wiggy brings up two difficult ones,
04:52but the next three are winnable.
04:53So if they beat the Rams this weekend,
04:55would that make you feel a bit differently
04:57that maybe they figured it out?
05:00Who did the Rams just lose to?
05:03The Dolphins last night.
05:04Well, it's a short week for them,
05:05they've got to fly across the country.
05:07Yeah.
05:10I mean, is the Rams,
05:12is anybody talking about them doing anything special?
05:15I mean, they got beat by the Dolphins,
05:16who is not a very good team, you know, either.
05:19And like I said, I'm not trying to rain on no parade.
05:21I'm just saying, let's be realistic.
05:23Now, if they get three games, winnable games,
05:26hopefully they win them.
05:27I want them to win because no matter what,
05:30I always go with the Patriots,
05:32even though it's a dumb bet,
05:34but you got to go with your team.
05:35You know, nothing major.
05:36I ain't betting no real money out there.
05:38I ain't going to do that.
05:39But you a friendly bet with your friends
05:40or somebody that played for that team,
05:42you know, quick little $100 or something, man.
05:47Hey, I still want them to go 500.
05:48I got more money than going 500, tell you that,
05:51which I don't know if that's going to happen.
05:53Ty, I think the biggest thing for us here is our focus is,
05:58or at least for me, is the off season.
06:00And do you think Robert Kraft really opens up his checkbook
06:06this off season to allow them to go after free agents,
06:10to potentially go after a guy that they trade for
06:14and then sign to a long-term deal?
06:16Do you think Robert is kind of under pressure
06:19to do that this off season now that, you know,
06:22the team has struggled
06:22and Bill will have been gone for a year?
06:26I think it is going to put some pressure on Mr. Kraft
06:29to open it up a little bit,
06:32but now it's going to be more attractive too
06:35because you have a quarterback.
06:37You know, it's like you don't have some stability
06:38in the quarterback,
06:39so you might be able to get one of these free agents in here,
06:42but it's still going to cost you.
06:43You know, before you had the luxury of,
06:45hey, we're winning,
06:46and a free agent to come in and take less money
06:48to be a part of the Patriots culture
06:51and a part of the team
06:52with a chance to win a championship.
06:54Right now, you got to get guys that, you got to pay them.
06:59You know what I mean?
07:00Those guys are not around.
07:01People are about getting paid.
07:02So he's going to have to pay guys to come in right now
07:05until he gets the coach.
07:07He's going to have to pay top dollar,
07:08and that's just what it is.
07:10I mean, who, I mean, think about it as a free agent.
07:12We love New England.
07:13We've been here,
07:14but most people that haven't been here,
07:16all they think of is cold.
07:17It's cold in New England.
07:19Tom Brady, they get the championships,
07:21but who's coming up here?
07:23There's not a vacation place in the wintertime.
07:25So people think about that in free agency.
07:27You know that, Wiggy.
07:28It's like, okay, if I'm going here tax-free,
07:30oh, this one got less taxes.
07:32I'm going to save some money.
07:34Hey, I'm going to go up there and lose.
07:35No, you come to New England right now
07:37with the team that's assembled, you got to pay.
07:41That's you got to pay to play.
07:42That's just what it is.
07:44Yeah, that's what Greg says to Ken.
07:46I would say, Ty, I watched the Chiefs.
07:49They're undefeated.
07:49That was a crazy way to pull out that win
07:51with the blocked field goal.
07:52How many Super Bowls in your mind does Mahomes need
07:56before he can legitimately argue that he's the greatest?
08:01I think he's going to need,
08:04for him to be in the conversation with Tom,
08:06he's going to have to,
08:09five is when the conversation is starting
08:11because no one else has that.
08:14Everything else was the four.
08:15We're talking about the Joe Montanas.
08:18I mean, he's four, right?
08:20Who was the Stillers?
08:21They got four.
08:22Oh, Bradshaw.
08:23He's so proud there.
08:24Yeah.
08:25Bradshaw, four.
08:26I know he's not in that content,
08:27but he's still got four Super Bowls,
08:29but you got to get there.
08:31You got to jump Joe Montana first.
08:33You know what I mean?
08:34To be in that conversation.
08:35Tom's in a whole nother stratosphere.
08:37Now, if you get, you know, seven or more,
08:40okay, now you earned that,
08:41but you got to play long enough to do so.
08:44You know what I mean?
08:45And it might be one of those type of things.
08:47He's doing so much in the short part of his career
08:50that people are going to, you know,
08:53say he did more in less time, you know,
08:56as far as getting there.
08:57But if you don't get seven of them
08:58and you can't put it in the string
09:00as long as Tom Brady has,
09:02I don't see it happening.
09:03But five, I think is the magic number
09:05to where you can at least start having a conversation.
09:07You can't do it at four because you got too many people.
09:10Shime has Joe Montana 75th
09:11on his top 100 all-time quarterback.
09:13Damn right.
09:14Right behind Elvis Gerbeck.
09:16The worst.
09:17What?
09:18He doesn't even have.
09:19What's the explanation for that, Shime?
09:22Come on, man.
09:23I just think he's overrated.
09:24He was on a really, really talented team.
09:26It's just like Bradshaw.
09:26Nobody talks about Bradshaw
09:28in the top five quarterbacks of all time.
09:29He won four titles.
09:31I think it's very similar with Joe Montana.
09:34No, come on.
09:35That's Joe.
09:36I mean, the greatest of all time
09:39wanted to be Joe Montana.
09:41Come on, man.
09:42I mean, he ain't not.
09:43That's just because he grew up in San Francisco.
09:44That should tell you something right there.
09:46That should tell you something right there.
09:47Come on, man.
09:48That's Joe Montana, bro.
09:50I mean, like I said,
09:51he got to get past that first,
09:52but Tom Brady just somehow seven
09:55in the way he did it and then to leave.
09:57And then it's always going to be, to me,
10:00what happened when young Patrick Mahomes
10:03was playing old Tom Brady?
10:06Head up.
10:07Yep.
10:08It wouldn't matter.
10:08Head to head, Tom Brady wins.
10:10And guess what?
10:11And you can't come back from that.
10:13When you played head up,
10:14Tom, you're supposed to be the new young gun,
10:16but Tom was still there and he beat your head up.
10:20So I mean, Tom is always going to have that argument,
10:22but I get it.
10:23Patrick Mahomes is absolutely incredible.
10:26And if anybody can be in the conversation
10:27with Tom Brady, it's him.
10:29But he has to win.
10:31He got to win.
10:32He got to win a couple more.
10:33Well, if he wins this year, that'll be a three, Pete.
10:36That'll be four for him.
10:37Right.
10:38Four for him in his career.
10:40Right.
10:41And he's only 27 or 28 years old.
10:45So if he realistically plays another 10 years,
10:48he's probably going to catch Brady passing yards
10:50and all the statistics.
10:52The question is.
10:53I mean, but do they seem the lock this year
10:56that they have been in other years?
10:58No.
10:59He'll be 30 next year.
11:0030 next year.
11:01And this is unbelievable.
11:02But what made Brady stand alone
11:05is so many great quarterbacks have had,
11:07or five or six, have had that one 10 year run.
11:11What Brady did that has never been done
11:13is have a second 10 year run 10 years later
11:16that was more impressive than the first.
11:18Right.
11:19But does Mahomes not need a 10 year gap?
11:22See, that's might be the difference, right?
11:24Remember, Brady went 10 years without not
11:27winning a Super Bowl, where Mahomes,
11:30let's say they win this year.
11:32He might not need that 10 year gap
11:33because he might, for the next five, six, seven years,
11:37be in it, right?
11:39He's 30 years old.
11:40Let's say he plays till in the quarter.
11:42He said that he wants to play till he's 40.
11:45Let's say he plays till 38.
11:47For the next eight years, he might not have that gap
11:50of missing the Super Bowl.
11:52His last two years, 2023 and 2024,
11:55his passer rating has been under 93.
11:58He's gone down precipitously from 2022, and he's only 29.
12:02Obviously, the team's great.
12:04The national conversation on Mahomes,
12:05if he were on the Patriots, would be what's wrong with him?
12:08Yeah.
12:09Yeah.
12:09Yeah, they would be like, he's struggling.
12:1112 touchdowns, nine picks?
12:12What the hell?
12:13He's having a bad year.
12:14Right.
12:15But the, but it, it, it, it.
12:17Go ahead, Wade.
12:18No, I was just going to say, it rarely
12:19comes down to winning Super Bowls, you know,
12:21because that's the most important thing.
12:23And if he wins another Super Bowl,
12:26people don't care how many touchdowns he'd thrown,
12:28especially if he has, like, great playoffs.
12:31I mean, I mean, you're right about that,
12:33but look how many Tom went to as well.
12:35I mean, you think about, you know, he was,
12:38he was in there every year, every other year.
12:41You've got to take that into consideration,
12:42even though, you know, the ones that he lost,
12:45he was still there.
12:46So I still think, you know, Patrick Mahomes has a ways to go
12:50if he gets this fourth one.
12:52Okay, now you reach to where other people
12:55have reached already.
12:56Like I said, you got Bradshaw, you have Montana.
13:00It's been done before.
13:01It's not something we haven't seen.
13:03And with Tom Brady, of course.
13:04Now, and you get to five.
13:06I think five is the number to where you say,
13:09okay, now he can start being in the conversation like that.
13:12And then, can he play long enough?
13:14It's kind of like the LeBron and the Michael Jordan comparison.
13:17You know, LeBron is playing long enough
13:20to where he can make that damn argument
13:22of being the GOAT for everything that he's done
13:24and all the numbers it has.
13:25But when you look at the impact of what Michael Jordan
13:28and the time he was there,
13:29everyone, everybody wanted to be like Mike.
13:32You know what I mean?
13:33He, I mean, look at his accolades and things like that.
13:36But he didn't play 20 some years.
13:38So you can, there's a debate there.
13:40There is no debate right now
13:42when it comes to greatest quarterback
13:44or football player of all time.
13:46In my opinion, you have to do more.
13:48And right now, Tom stands by himself, period.
13:52Time for the most entertaining play of the game,
13:55which is brought to you by Apex Entertainment.
13:57Experience the thrills at Apex Entertainment in Marlborough.
14:01Any suggestions?
14:04The most entertaining play?
14:07The coin flip.
14:09Yeah, I agree with you, Curtis.
14:12Hey, the touchdown pass wasn't bad.
14:14Well, it was the two yard pass.
14:15I would say the-
14:16Yeah, the touchdown pass.
14:17I mean, maybe the sack.
14:19Can we have one that was called back?
14:21I mean, the-
14:22Ooh.
14:22That one on the sideline?
14:23The throw, the sideline throw.
14:25Laser beam.
14:26Which was your favorite sack?
14:27There were nine.
14:28Yeah.
14:29Yeah, I guess maybe that's it.
14:29That first throw of the game, Drake made a hooper.
14:32I like when the NFL receiver doesn't realize
14:34that he has to stay in bounds at all times.
14:36Yeah, gotta stay in bounds.
14:37Schooler one.
14:38I think Mother Nature had the best,
14:42you know, most entertaining play.
14:45It was nice weather.
14:46In November in Chicago.
14:50My vote goes to Mother Nature.
14:54I thought you were going to be more excited
14:55about this Patriots team this morning.
14:57A little cold water from Thailand this morning,
14:59but maybe we need that.
15:00He's keeping it a buck.
15:01Yeah, he's keeping it real.
15:04You know, look, Gerard is my man.
15:06I'm going to be real, give him a hard time.
15:08Look, when I was playing, I didn't play well.
15:11They gave me a hard time.
15:12No excuses, but I'm giving them the kudos
15:16I would like to see versus a better team.
15:19And hey, I mean, it comes with the territory.
15:22We on this side now.
15:23Wiggy, you know how it is.
15:25I mean, we've been there.
15:26You play bad, you get talked about.
15:27Yep.
15:28It's nature of the beast.
15:29Playing it simple.
15:30All right, Kylah.
15:32Thank you for taking the time.
