00:00What's your take on?
00:02What happened with Debo Samuel Tabor Pepper and Jake Moody on the sideline?
00:06Well, it's two things one. It's not a huge deal because when you are a
00:13Pro-team things are gonna happen in the heat of the moment. The other piece of it is
00:17Where does he get off coming up to somebody and trying to?
00:21Get in their face about a failed performance now
00:25It would be one thing if it was a lack of effort
00:27I think Jake Moody was trying to make the kick. I don't believe that Jake Moody was
00:32Jake in it pun intended
00:34I think that he was out there trying to make the kick and you could see
00:38By his facial expressions that he was really wearing it and he was feeling it and he was losing confidence
00:44So for Debo Samuel to go over there and to do that and say whatever he said
00:49Which was more I would bet than hey, dude
00:53Mix in a make and you know taper pepper immediately jumps to his defense
00:58So that's not what you do when you're a teammate and you're a leader
01:01So it's one thing for Debo to say like, oh, yeah
01:05You know, I had a lapse a momentary lapse and this and that and that's fine
01:08everyone's entitled to make a mistake, but I thought that that was just out of out of line and
01:15To me it speaks to a lack of leadership in in the locker room
01:20What's going on where where that's gonna happen if you're a leader you don't do that
01:25Like I don't know and I think about Steph Curry and it's hard because he's one of the greatest leaders of all time
01:31But I don't know if he's ever gone up to somebody in that fashion after
01:36You know what missing three free throws and like getting in their face
01:40Different style of leadership though. Like what if I argued that that like leaders sometimes do do that?
01:46And devil's advocate for a minute because that's not necessarily my point or my take but I mean
01:55It sounded like you guys were about to open this door earlier on the crossover. What if Debo's first name was Draymond?
02:03Then would it be okay? No
02:04Why Draymond does it all the time and we call him the leader of the heartbeat of the team, right?
02:09Does he like put his hands on people? Yes, and well, but that was no longer here
02:15But that was after the fact that was out like and not the Jordan pool thing. I'm talking about the Debo thing
02:20Oh, I'm talking about the pool
02:21I know but the Debo putting hands on someone was
02:24After the fact like his comment was made to Moody and then Debo putting hands on Tabor was based on Tabor's reaction
02:32To what Debo said, right? And we don't know what Debo said. We don't know but
02:38Hang in there big guy. They'll be brighter days ahead and I know everyone's focused on the phrase lock-in
02:42I'm sure there were some a lot of F's
02:45And and the words lock-in don't have any F's in them, right?
02:49Yeah, you you need to bleep and lock in and make those dude
02:51Well, and I was watching the replay again this morning
02:54I just was watching it here on my laptop during the commercial and they you could see him go right over to Jake Moody as
03:01He's coming off the field because Moody misses and you know, you see
03:05Maybe it's wish now ski
03:07maybe it's Tabor pepper a couple guys go over to him and go helmet to helmet and pat him on the head with a
03:12Hey, you know hang in there because you missed three now
03:15This is three and as the camera is cutting away, you can see a headband or yeah
03:21He's got the headband on Debo Samuel be lining off the sideline toward Jake Moody that to me is not
03:29Leadership, it's not what you do. It's interesting. That's just me and I whatever everyone's gonna react differently
03:35I know that me if I make a mistake and Jake Moody realizes when you miss a third field goal
03:41And a field goal that's gonna put you up six and it doesn't win the game
03:46But it's a big kick and it's a big deal and he knows that his job is to make the kick
03:51So the last thing I want
03:53When I make a mistake is to have somebody come up to me and tell me how much I need to not make that mistake
03:59That's totally fair, but that's you. I don't I don't know Jake
04:04Like I listen there are a fair amount of people who have played in NFL games who today are saying not only is that?
04:11Appropriate it's normalcy and it worked
04:14Yeah, it worked. I mean, we don't have any evidence to say that it didn't I know where you're coming from
04:20Which is that's not what did it? I don't know what did it. Nobody knows and by the way
04:25It was two feet away from not doing it, right? Like I mean, he almost missed that one, too
04:29He didn't and so that's wonderful
04:32But like I've had a number of like we've watched that's all over the internet
04:37This is very very discussed topic today the facility on FS1 with Emanuel Acho and and Leshawn McCoy
04:45whole show is about it today and
04:48Acho is with you. He's like that's completely out of line and Leshawn McCoy is like it's not only in line. It's a must
04:55That's why Debo is one of the boombox guys
04:58You got to go wake people up. Sometimes this is not an office job
05:04Where it's totally inappropriate to speak to people that way this is more like a restaurant job
05:10Where if you bring the wrong meal to three tables in a row someone's gonna go
05:16dude
05:18Wake up. What's a double standard?
05:20We need nobody did this to Brandon Iuke when he came out after his hold in we actually don't know any what we didn't see
05:27Anybody beeline on the field and get in his face. I mean and I didn't see it
05:31I don't I don't think it didn't happen three times in a row happened either
05:34It's a double standard is what it is and Debo Samuel took an opportunity
05:39With a kicker a guy who is not seen as a real football player, and you've made this point before
05:44I've talked to many pro football players. You don't look at a kicker
05:49Ask Loneal sometimes his feelings about al del Greco one of the great
05:54He can't stand al del Greco because al del Greco missed a big kick and
06:00Lowe's out there
06:01You know blocking linebackers and defensive tackles and he's out there blood sweat and tears and the big moneymaker his forehead
06:08And you're out there giving it all you're laying it all on the line
06:11And then al del Greco comes out and he can't hit a 37 yarder
06:16And you're gonna feel some type of way they all get yes
06:19There is specialist ism in the NFL for sure question and by the way
06:24They're all subject to the same minimum salaries right if you're a veteran and and and you've played multiple years in the league
06:31That special teamer who's flying down the field to get a concussion every single week
06:36Gets the exact same salary as the guy who never gets touched of course
06:40Let's tonight or kicker who's decided we got to go tackle people every week outside of that though
06:46These people are free and clear now. I listen. I'm largely with you
06:52I'm with you because I don't think that the way we look at this
06:58Feels good where people were players on the sideline are like I'm the one beating my head against the wall well
07:05That's that's your skill set and you're highly paid for that
07:09You know if Debo Samuels know this guy just walks out here. Well Debo you make 25 million a year was Jake make
07:16So that's all baked into how we do this
07:20So don't hold it against him because his specialized skill, which is very good by the way
07:26Maybe not yesterday, but you get what I'm saying. It's not like everybody on the field can go do that
07:31so I'm more for the
07:34Just because his positions different it still deserves your respect. It still deserves your acknowledgement what I
07:42Not disagreeing with you, but the one area where I'm like, I don't know
07:46I don't know what makes Jake Moody tick and
07:49May and a lot of people do like to be coached hard a lot of people do need he's not his coach
07:54Well, I mean in a football team you need that you need leadership from your players
08:00Yes
08:00Too many people over there to just be like all right set a meeting with Kyle
08:04Because you've missed three field goals in a row and Kyle knows exactly yeah, that's not for me
08:09That's not coaching and it's not Debo's place. They need to police themselves some I'll fight for that. That is not for me
08:16That's not policing
08:17What that is is you going up to a guy who clearly is in a low moment having just missed a field goal
08:23He understands how important it is for him to do his job
08:26I would imagine Jake Moody's a field goal kicker understands that he is
08:31Expected to make it almost every time and if you don't make it, well, it's not okay
08:37It's never okay unless you're up 27 to nothing and it's an old by the way field goal fine in that game yesterday where?
08:44The offense is frustrated because they can't get in the end zone and now we're gonna rely on Jake and he's missed two and if
08:50He makes this one. We're up six. We're in games not over, of course
08:53But at least you feel like the game is more in hand and you miss it
08:58Well, if everybody felt that way then you would have had 47 guys run over and get in his face
09:04But only one guy did so I'm not buying that right but that guy
09:08Is is is one of the people who is in that position on this team?
09:13and again, I
09:14Like I'm not I'm not saying that you can make Jake Moody's some sort of a lesser person on this sideline
09:20Because he's a kicker and because he doesn't make or take hits that that's the part about this that I don't like
09:27But the idea that that like teammates or coaches or anyone cannot have very
09:33tense
09:35emotional
09:37Conversations in the middle of games that I reject I I don't know that I've seen many games so that doesn't happen, right?
09:43but bring that same energy to
09:45Another person who is made when Trent Williams fall starts and he holds does he run up to Trent other and go dude?
09:51Trent stay in your stance till the snap dog. I'll be not to trap your ass and killing us Trent's earned
09:56Otherwise, that's a future Hall of Famer number one
09:59Easier to do it to the kicker, but we also we wouldn't know that Debo even did this if
10:04Tabor hadn't gotten into his face and then there was a shove
10:08So my point is I don't think we do know how often this happens
10:12Because we very easily would have missed this one, too
10:15If it didn't turn into a shoving match, so I think this happens a lot. I really do. Yeah, I don't think it happens
10:22Nearly as often as you're portraying. I think you've got a kicker who is a younger guy
10:28Second-year player and he's having a bad day and Debo took the opportunity to not coach him up but to make him feel worse
10:35Yeah, I mean look Debo sounded
10:38partially regretful
10:40Partially regretful said he stepped out of his character a little bit, right?
10:44But also I didn't hear anybody after the game be like this is a big deal or we have a problem
10:49And again, like he made his next kick, right? Thank You Debo couldn't have done it without you
10:55Who knows right don't know otherwise
10:58Like are you are you arguing that that's never the right way to coach someone?
11:01I'm not arguing. It's never the right way, but it's not his place to and that's not coaching
11:06I don't want to portray this as coach whatever team
11:10teammate
11:12Frustrated about tough loving there was no love in that. How do you know? I mean that we don't know what he said, right?
11:18Well, whatever he said the long snapper had to step in and basically tell him blankety blankety blank, right?
11:25But that bothered him. It did I like did you see anybody else come to Tabor peppers defense?
11:29No, it was just the three of them. Okay, like they're all aware of what's going on, right?
11:34I didn't see any pepper
11:36This is where the kicker because he thought that what Debo said was out of line. So that's his opinion
11:40Exactly, that's his opinion. I would lean you know, whatever what was said
11:44I would look at Tabor pepper and say
11:46You know
11:46The long snapper is probably not gonna stand up for a kicker who just missed a third kick
11:50Unless what was said was out of line. Well, it wasn't tough love and it wasn't coaching my opinion
11:55Yeah, I I don't know what was said
11:57I don't know what gets Jake to work and the next kick was made so I'm not saying you're wrong
12:03I'm saying I don't know if the opposite opinion or your opinion is right
12:08I don't know what was said, but I don't think that this is that rare

12:29Let's let's take some calls and we're gonna have info real real soon here on
12:34The tickets to tomorrow night's Warriors game and Steve Kerr in an hour Ryan and Irvine on Willard and Dibbs. Hi Ryan
12:43Hey guys, you know listening to this conversation
12:46I I had another point but
12:48Here here's what I was thinking. So
12:51Maybe this is bigger than just yesterday for Debo. I
12:55Mean think about Jake Moody
12:58Since Jake Moody has been with the Niners. I know you just said that he's been a really good specialist. How's he?
13:05Has he been a really good specialist? I know
13:10Ryan I don't know who said that did dibs. Did you say he's been there? Yeah, I would know I would argue
13:15No, he has not been a really good specialist. He's been okay. No you
13:20You said he's been a really good specialist. Maybe not yesterday, but he has been a good specialist
13:25Yeah, I I mean so far this year I was I was referring to this year. He had had one other mess
13:30I think right, but anyway, go ahead Ryan
13:32So here's my point. They use a third round draft pick on this kid. There's several things at play here
13:38He has had some high-profile misses. He's cost them games
13:42He was shaky in the playoffs and it's always been about his mentality not his not his physicality
13:49The kid can boot it. I mean over the stadium. He's got a leg on him
13:54He's just a head case and I think Debo's personality mixed with Jake Moody's personality
14:00I mean look at him. He doesn't show any emotion and I think that's why Debo kind of got fiery yesterday with them
14:07Here's what I didn't like though
14:09peppers yesterday in the
14:12He he was interviewed after
14:14He aired out all the dirty laundry. I know the media's, you know, they're their job is to ask the questions
14:20He doesn't have to answer him
14:22He just spilled it all out exactly what was said what Debo said how he responded everything and then here's how it ends
14:30He says well, have you guys talked about it? Have you guys squashed it? He goes, um
14:35There's a lot of people in here. It's kind of hard to get over to him. Maybe later. It's like
14:41What is going on in this locker room, I think they're I mean
14:45I don't know that someone said earlier that there's been some weird stuff going on with this team in the locker room
14:50You know, whatever it is the Super Bowl hangover
14:53There's just some personalities in this locker room this year that I it's just something's up Ryan
14:59Thanks, maybe I'm more read that I don't know what you think dibs
15:02I'm more read that is just like you cut the tension with a knife with this team right now
15:07there's a lot of pressure on this team and they've had a lot of crap go the wrong way and
15:12Some of it is their fault and some of it is not, you know, there's a McCaffrey injury. There's holdouts
15:17Somebody got shot in August. You lost the Super Bowl
15:21You've blown a couple of late leads like there's a lot of stuff going on that will cause things to
15:28Bubble over and then you come out of a buy when this team is used to being like, okay
15:33Now we're gonna put our best foot forward and McCaffrey's back and let's ride and it felt in that moment like another
15:42Winning performance was slipping away
15:44So again, I'm not excusing it. I think there are aspects of this that are on Debo
15:50He obviously overstepped the bounds, but I don't think that what he did is
15:55On the surface without knowing exactly what was said. I don't think it's that rare. I don't think it's that offensive either
16:01I
16:03Don't know. Maybe it helped. Maybe it helped wake Jake up and focus him. I don't know
16:07Yeah, I'd like to hear that from Jake before I jumped to that conclusion
16:11And I do think the caller is kind of right about you know, Jake Moody
16:15he doesn't show a lot of emotion either joyous or
16:19Sad and I I would disagree with his assertion that he hasn't been very good
16:23He had two field goals over 50 yards in the Super Bowl. He kicked three field goals in the Super Bowl
16:29So he was pretty good in that game
16:31And I know we all want to look at the game that he cost us last year against Cleveland
16:35That's an extra point in the Super Bowl to sure. Yeah, but you know ten points. He made three field goals in a PAT
16:41I judge a kicker based on how I feel when he's lining up and when he lines up, I'm nervous
16:46Jake Moody is not bad, but he's not good
16:49He is not like I mean
16:51There are too many kickers in this league right now where you said this earlier like they're automatic
16:56They're automatic there's too many kickers in this league that when they line up you're like, that's good
17:01That's good. And that doesn't mean they always are
17:04You know the Texans guy had kind of a wobbly snap and he missed a 50
17:08I mean fair bear he missed a what was it a 58 yarder at the end of regulation and that's and that's a 58 yarder
17:15So that's a little bit different. But when that guy lines up
17:18Dude, it it it's right down Broadway and there's too many of those guys in the NFL
17:26And Jake Moody's not one of them. He's not bad
17:29But he's not good. Who do you guys think is the best kicker in the NFL right now?
17:33It's Brandon Aubrey. Yeah, Dallas
17:36Undrafted free agent the same year Jake Moody was drafted when the Niners traded up to pick him in a third round
17:41And but what's Aubrey's percentage right now for this year because this kid baits with Detroit hasn't missed yet, right? Perfect
17:47He's perfect for 14
17:50Chris Boswell's missed once Boswell's awesome group is 18 for 19 chase
17:56McLaughlin is 16 to 17 Aubrey's missed twice, you know, who's not anymore is Tucker. He's clearly like
18:03With Baltimore. Oh, yeah, he's having a bad years. Yeah, he might be done. He might be he might be
18:09But so yeah, I don't know. I don't think Jake Moody stinks, but he's not great
18:15Well, you missed once going into yesterday, right so but I'm going through the whole two years I get it
18:20He was 85% last year. Yeah, but but he does in big moments
18:25It gets more wobbly and he doesn't often split the uprights
18:30He tucks it in here and tucks it in there is good. He's okay doesn't matter. He's okay
18:35That's what I would say about Jake Moody. So if he is just okay, and you're his teammate
18:40Do you think that I don't know going on to the field to berate him is that gonna help them?
18:45I don't know. I don't know just as a human being. Do you think that is more likely to be?
18:51productive or destructive I
18:54Think it's pretty it's pretty easy for me to say
18:56I'm a majority of human beings would in that moment not take that as hey, you know
19:01What Debo came out here and berated me and that's gonna make me feel like I want to make the next kick
19:06I don't think that's the question. This is this is the National Football League
19:09We're not here to make everybody feel good. No, but when you have a spot on the team, that's very very mental
19:16It's probably the second most mental spot in all of football outside of the quarterback
19:21And this is how you're gonna go about trying to get him to play better
19:25Listen again Debo has already admitted
19:28This is an emotional outburst and and and and didn't necessarily go exactly the way he wanted
19:33I'm not fully excusing the behavior
19:36I'm leaving open for the possibility that this actually wasn't just a complete net negative
19:43I don't like we're not here to make everyone feel good
19:47and like that's not that's not the National Football League and we're certainly not here to be like
19:53We have to just we have to be calm and nice with everyone all the time. That's not how we parent
19:59That's not how we coach. That's not how we teammate
20:02That's not how any of us here in this building do it and our business is nowhere near as emotional as theirs
20:08Like I yes, I all I can liken it to the most emotionally driven
20:14Business I've ever worked in where you can get yelled at in the middle of it
20:18What is a restaurant and yes, if you mess up a bunch of times in a row
20:24and not just the boss, but
20:27The waiter next to you who you took his food and gave it to someone that like you're gonna get barked at
20:35Helps you for the next day. It's not about how exactly what it's not about that
20:40It's about you don't you making this play and it's not Debo's job to step in and tell Jake Moody
20:47Yes, he needs to do. Yes, it is. He's really not he's a leader on the team. I can't believe you're defending this
20:53I'm telling you that he's overly emotional
20:55But there's a middle ground here like we did or are we literally saying that if anybody has ever terse with anyone?
21:02It's like yo, this is not turn this is going on to the field to berate a guy after he just
21:08He's at the lowest point of his day
21:10Yes, he knows he just missed a third this fan base that has yelled at me for three years about the word
21:17accountability
21:19Well Jake's accountable is he and his Debo the one to hold his feet to the fire
21:24No, he's not. Why do you say that because he doesn't hold anyone else's feet to the fire. Don't know
21:29Yes, I do know that because you've never seen him go on the field and do that to any other player
21:35I've never seen it. Show me an example where Debo's gone up to Trent or
21:40Brandon
21:44After he dropped the pass in the end zone
21:46You don't know Debo march out there and say dude catch the ball. You don't need to score
21:50You don't know I do know you don't because we haven't seen it
21:53No, because you wouldn't have seen this Brandon would have clapped back at him and we would have seen it
21:57No, we wouldn't take it from now. You don't know you do know just say it. No, don't know
22:03I do know you're not in the room
22:06Kicker missed a kick and the wide receiver came off the sideline to berate the kicker after he
22:13Never that's what I see. Never. That's what I know. I know what I saw and what I saw was completely
22:20Reasonable and out of line. I've never been in the wide receiver room
22:23I've never been privy to a conversation between Debo and Brandon
22:27I have no idea what the leadership structure is in the 49er locker room and
22:32Say we have no idea if we would have seen this if Tabor pepper didn't freak out. Those are all facts
22:39We saw it and it happened so you can defend it all you want and you're you want to defend it
22:45You can defend it because it's football and this is what football guys. I'm not defending that
22:50I'm defending it from what you're saying
22:52Which is that you know things that you don't know what I know is we've never seen it before and because you often don't because
22:58These things happen all the time. Never seen it. You can't see people talking to each other on the sideline. You can't see that
