00:00President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed the Philippine Maritime Zones Act and the Philippine
00:05Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act.
00:07According to the President, the Philippine Maritime Zones Act aims to clarify the country's
00:11maritime entitlements and scope, which are based on the United Nations Convention on
00:17the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS.
00:19This will also establish the maritime jurisdiction of the Philippines, ensuring the country's
00:24rights as an archipelagic state are clearly defined so that Filipinos can benefit from
00:29the wealth of the Philippine Seas.
00:31In the meantime, the Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Law will also strengthen the Philippines'
00:35maritime and aerial policies through the designation of routes for international vessels.
00:41This will avoid arbitrary international passages through the territory of the country or unregulated
00:46entry of foreign vessels into the country's waters.
00:50I therefore call on all concerned government agencies and the local governments to review
00:55rules and regulations against these new laws with a view of undertaking the necessary steps
01:02for their effective implementation.
