Boomer Esiason joins the show! What were Esiason's thoughts on Brissett after he replaced Maye? Are the Jets "cooked"?
Transcript
00:00Hey Boomer. Hey, good morning, man. It's a Jacoby preset day up there and I know what I'm sure
00:06Well, and it's Aaron Rodgers day where you are. Oh my god. It is a nightmare here
00:10I can tell you that so let's talk about the good things first. How about that?
00:15We're in. All right. Well, the good things are number one Jacoby preset, you know
00:19I'm really happy for him because he comes in he plays a really good second half doesn't turn the ball over does exactly what a
00:25Backup quarterback should do number two. I think your secondary is really a tremendous secondary
00:30I mean, that's that was a hell of a performance yesterday
00:33I know that there were some plays that were going to be made but you know Garrett Wilson and Devante Adams were on the field
00:38They are they are pretty special and number three
00:41I have to say I don't know if Aaron Rodgers has any answers in this regard
00:46but this team went all in and
00:47We're looking at a a total overhaul next year for the New York Jets because I think they probably have come to the realization
00:54That they are absolutely going nowhere this year. They needed to win this game
00:58They didn't win it season to me
01:00It looks like it's cooked and it's gonna be really hard to keep these guys
01:03Motivated as they move forward through the rest of the season the delay calls are those on him
01:09I mean one of them ended up costing them the chance to get the two-point conversion which would
01:14Change things at the end of that game completely inexcusable. I mean, especially with a 40 year old quarterback
01:21Even though you have a new offensive coordinator over the last couple weeks that are that is calling plays from the sideline
01:27The quarterback should know the play should know the formation should know exactly what they're doing
01:32And you know, I saw his explanation after the game a couple times
01:35They were lagging in the huddle other times they had problems with personnel
01:39the two-point play was an absolute disaster because ultimately, you know, it's it's it's really
01:45It would have been a different game had they had they scored that but you know
01:49They have kicking problems and they have had kicking problems
01:51I mean, whatever could go wrong has gone wrong for what many people think I'm not saying this
01:57but a lot of fans around here are saying it is a cursed franchise that Hall of Famers come here to go die and
02:04Unfortunately, we may be witnessing that right now
02:08here fans and
02:11Patriots players and some coaches really upset about the no call on the helmet the helmet with Drake May
02:17Yes, okay, so I agree especially after there was a rough in the passer against Jacoby preset that didn't look like anything
02:24I had you know, and it's also when you go back to the game in which we saw
02:29Sam Darnold's head almost torn a tore off last week and they don't see it against the Rams. So they're gonna miss calls
02:36It's all it's always judgment. It comes down to that
02:39the other thing I will say if we think back to our
02:42Conversations early on in the year and you guys were wondering when Drake May was going to play
02:47And I was saying let's go take a little time
02:49He needs to sit there and watch and see how a game unfolds and kind of have those
02:53Experiences on the sidelines. So when he does go in he is ready. And by the way
02:58He was ready yesterday. I mean if Warren for the drop passes early in the game
03:02I mean he was taking off and running and getting first downs
03:04I mean he looked every bit the part of a very very
03:09Successful player and somebody has a bright future in this league, but this is what happens with these young guys, man
03:14they put themselves out there they run they take hits and
03:18Unfortunately for Drake now, maybe he looks like he'll probably be out for at least a couple of weeks
03:23If not more given the sensitivities surrounding concussions these days
03:27Boomer when you look at this game yesterday, I think one of the things that we kind of
03:32We're had issues with all week where some of these wide receivers
03:36Talking about what they wanted to do how much they wanted the football and they clearly had some drops
03:41have you ever been a part of that where guys haven't really established themselves in the league and
03:47Complaining are complaining about touches. All right, so I never had to really deal with the complaining about touches but in
03:551995 the Dark Ages here for the New York Jets
03:58I started a season and went to training camp with four
04:02receptions as the total number of receptions for the wide receiver core going into the season that was the year that Wayne Corbett was a
04:08rookie and
04:10he made the team and he started and
04:12It went it basically it was good for him because it gave him an opportunity to have a really really great career for the Jets
04:18but it was not great for us because he ended up being our leading receiver that year and
04:23That just went to show you just how inexperienced we were at the position. So
04:27I
04:28If I were the Patriot receivers, I just keep my mouth shut really honestly
04:32With a couple those drops early on and then later on in the game with Jacoby even throwing the ball
04:37I I it was it was probably frustrating
04:41I can imagine from a fan standpoint for the New England Patriots because just watching the game and
04:46Watching those drops and and I thought that Adam Archuleta was really doing a good job in terms of pointing those things out
04:53They have issues there, I mean and it's and it's been an issue since they started the season
04:58So hopefully, you know, they'll get their act straight before the season's over
05:02But I would I would think that there's going to be a few changes at that at that position next year
05:07Boomer my lead this morning was that I'd rather be on a two and six Patriots team in a rebuild mode than a Jets team
05:13That's two and six that had all the expectations in the world that thought that this was a Super Bowl bound Jets team
05:20Where do you stand on that?
05:21They're both two and six, but it seems like the Patriots have their future in Drake May
05:24But the Jets are falling apart both have dysfunction in the locker room, you know, Courtney
05:28It's got to be really tough for you being the smartest person in that room
05:33And I feel and I feel the same way you do I mean at the Patriots at least have a future maybe not an immediate
05:39Future no, neither one of these teams is going to the playoffs now, but at least they have their young
05:45Vibrant quarterback that a fan base can believe in now when he comes back on the field
05:50Nobody knows but I think you hit it right on the head. The Jets are an older team
05:55They went all in they fired their coach three weeks ago
05:58I mean, this is a dumpster fire that is just raging out of control at the moment
06:04They got a quarterback that goes on national television every week to try to explain away the darkness and everything else
06:10It's just the Jet fan has probably had enough
06:13I work with a bunch of Jet fans down here at WFN and they are livid to say the least
06:19So it is definitely ugly and I think Courtney you are 100% correct
06:25Boomer yesterday felt like an old-school
06:29Belichick type of win where you have a week of chaos you have the soft comments
06:35The discussion of further mutiny in the locker room you lose your quarterback early in the game and yet somehow the team
06:43Specifically the defense rallied around their embattled coach and Gerard Mayo yesterday. Yeah, you know, what's amazing is that how we all
06:51kind of
06:52Process the comments from Gerard Mayo last week about his team being soft
06:57Then I was explaining that sometimes, you know
06:59The player comes out in these coaches, especially when they're recently off the field within the last five years or so
07:04And I think Gerard wore his emotions on the sleeve on his sleeve and we didn't know how the team was gonna react
07:11Is the team gonna like shut down on him as the team gonna play harder for him?
07:15And then when you win a game like they did yesterday
07:19You have a great feeling in a locker room and I heard reports about the different nature of the locker rooms
07:24Of course that the Patriots, you know after losing so many games in a row finally won one at home
07:29I don't think they had won one at home since last October
07:32It's been a long time coming and it really is a
07:35Good reflection that the players came out and they played hard and almost to a man
07:40every player said that they took those comments as a challenge as opposed to an insult and
07:46That's a credit to the players and and I and that's also a credit to the coach who obviously knows the room knows his team
07:53So he knows what he can say and I'm I'm sure it was a long week for him
07:57But getting a victory the way they did yesterday had to be the ultimate
08:01Satisfaction satisfying I should say satisfying
08:04Win for him at least in his young head coaching career
08:07Did young Boomer Esiason often dream of throwing a Hail Mary to win a football game like Jaden Daniels did yesterday?
08:14Oh, man, I mean that guy launched the ball
08:17It looked like I think was about 65 yards in the air and
08:20The fact that he was able to run around for about five or six seconds because the Bears ended up only rushing three guys
08:27Should be a should be a warning to every defense in that situation
08:31That you got to send at least one more guy. You got to get some sort of pressure
08:35But yeah, it was a remarkable throw or remarkable play in otherwise a very very bad offensive game
08:42I mean it was ugly and both quarterbacks didn't play all that great
08:47I mean reflective of the score, but man that that Hail Mary was amazing. I mean they all are aren't they?
08:53Yeah
08:54Boomer one of the things that I look at now and I know we kind of go back and we say off the Patriots would have
09:01Done this if you're Gerard Mayo, you're that coaching staffing. Are you sitting there and looking going?
09:09I I know it's kind of revisionist history, but I feel like every week with the performance of
09:15the Washington Washington
09:17Commanders Chicago Bears the Denver Broncos all three of these young quarterbacks have been able to
09:24Elevate their team in a position where they are
09:28Competitive and making a push for the players
09:31It has to be something that they sit there and think about we should have started this kid Drake made week one
09:37Yeah, I again I'm gonna go back to just sitting and getting experience and I have no problem with what the Patriots did and I
09:45Know it's it's easy to look at these other players around the league and say hey, they're having success
09:49They're elevating their team and I think Drake May has elevated his team as a matter of fact the moment that he took over
09:55They started throwing the ball down the field and he could make throws on the run and he was doing things that
10:00Jacoby Brissett wasn't doing
10:03And I think that's a product of him sitting there watching and and by the time they put him on the field
10:08He was imminently ready to be successful now. He takes this hit yesterday
10:13It's really unfortunate, but that's the life of a rookie quarterback. Sometimes they don't realize how fast things go
10:18I actually thought early in the game yesterday that he really played smart
10:22That when he took off and the way that Adam Archuleta was describing the Jets pass rush, which which was completely undisciplined
10:30He was able to take advantage of it, but I I don't think that they regret the fact that they held them back
10:35I mean, let's face it Jermaine. This team's not going to the playoffs. The Jets are not going to the playoffs
10:40This is a rebuilding year for Elliott Wolfe and for Gerard Mayo and for Bob craft and they got the most important piece
10:47It looks like and now they have to fill in around them spend some money next offseason
10:51have a couple high draft picks be able to you know, maybe get some wide receivers and and
10:57Improve the offensive line, which is gonna be paramount for his success moving forward speaking of throwing the football James Winston threw for
11:06344 yards in that upset
11:08What are they what happens with Deshaun Watson, I mean they owe him so much money
11:14He like what do you guess happens with him?
11:17My feeling is he's done in Cleveland the figure they have to figure out how to get out from underneath the contract
11:23He'll most likely be on the roster next year because he's coming off of this knee injury
11:27I don't know when he would be able to return
11:30I feel like it's it takes at least eight months to come back from something like that
11:34So but that would probably be towards the early part of next year
11:39I just this the second year in a row now that they've had a backup quarterback come in and actually make the team look
11:46competent especially on offense
11:48And they it's amazing what Jamis did just like what Joe Flacco did last year
11:52So I don't see him suiting up as a Browns quarterback. I really don't but then again is James the future
11:59I don't necessarily know that's going to be the case too because maybe if he does have success
12:04Maybe the Browns are not going to bring him back much like they didn't bring back Joe Flacco because they don't want to hurt
12:08Just Sean Watson's feelings
12:11You know
12:11I I just don't get the Browns are the Browns will always be the Browns and just never seem to get it, right

12:31Did you ever when you were starting quarterback?
12:34Did you ever asked to come out of a game because you were tired like Anthony Richards? No, I didn't
12:39I I saw this yesterday too
12:40And I was like Tiki Barbara was doing a game and I was texting him during the game going what in the F just happened
12:47Why did he take himself out of the game?
12:49You know and I was like, this is ridiculous. So he said he was tired
12:53He acted like he was a running back tapped his helmet and I'm like if I were the backup quarterback
12:58I'd be like what what just happened? I'd have to go find my helmet
13:02So I have never seen anything like that and I have I never did anything like that
13:07But then again, I don't necessarily know that I ran as much as he ran in a game
13:11So from personal experience, I could tell you no
13:14But I could also say that maybe he just was being honest and I can appreciate that I guess
13:20When you look at that Dolphins team and they dropped that game yesterday by one but to a back-end
13:26How do you feel like he looked coming back in after the concussion?
13:31Yeah, and do you think that he's owed more credit for keeping that team in a better place?
13:35I I think that he's the key. He's the key to that whole thing
13:39I mean, you know, is there season over you know, it's it's weird because you know, they are two and five
13:46You know the Bills win yesterday at a huge win out in Seattle, they're six and two right now
13:51I would I would safe I feel safe to say that Buffalo
13:55Unless there's an injury to Josh Allen is going to win this division again. I
14:00I think with five losses Miami has a chance still to turn their season around. I think if you have six or more losses
14:07You might as well just kiss it. Goodbye and and just say that you know
14:11Next year is that is the thing that we got to be looking forward to but yeah
14:14I was pretty happy with two yesterday watching him in it. They looked again
14:18Offensively a little bit more normal than what they have been looking like their defense is really suspect
14:24So I worry about that defense. All right boomer. Good luck with the Jets fans the rest of the week
14:28Oh my well Jets and Yankee fans, by the way
14:31We will talk to you next week. All right. Sounds good guys. Bye
