Boomer Esiason joins! Do the Patriots have a bright future? Do they have the QB and Head Coach of the future?
Transcript
00:00Hey, uh, good morning.
00:02Things are not going well here in New York this morning.
00:05So I know that the Patriots got beat over in London, but I mean, I got to deal with
00:08three losing teams, the Mets, the Yankees and the Yankees, the Mets, the Jets and the
00:14Giants all got slaughtered yesterday.
00:17Yeah.
00:18Don't, we don't want to hear about the Yankees.
00:19So let's start there.
00:21And we really don't want to talk about what happened in London yesterday, but I, you picked
00:25the word, uh, pathetic, embarrassing, uh, unprecedented S show.
00:30Like you pick it, Boomer, uh, in relation to who they are doing with Patriots.
00:36You know what?
00:37I think there's, there's two ends of the spectrum.
00:39There's the Jets who were all in for this year, spending a lot of money and bringing
00:42Aaron Rogers here, bringing Devante Adams here, uh, Hassan Reddick supposedly coming
00:47back today.
00:48Um, and, and what, what is the future?
00:51What is the immediate future?
00:52I don't know.
00:53I just got hammered by the Steelers and I don't even know what the, the future for the
00:57next 10 weeks is going to be.
00:59But you know, for the Patriots, I look at this team and I say, okay, they, it looks
01:03like they have their quarterback of the future.
01:05He looks the part, he looked apart last week, he looked a little bit better this week.
01:09He looks like he's not afraid to throw the ball down the field.
01:13He's accurate and he looks like he's in charge.
01:16So to me, the future is bright because the biggest question seems to be answered by the
01:22Patriots.
01:23And that would be Drake May.
01:24And you know, when you're 26 to 37 in an NFL game, you got two touchdowns, you don't turn
01:29the ball over and it's your second start.
01:31That's pretty damn good.
01:32So is the future bright if Gerard Mayo remains your head coach?
01:36Well, I, I, I understand that that's the big question and he's replacing a legend, which
01:41is impossible to do.
01:43And I said in week one, I thought the players really loved them and played for him.
01:47They gave him the game ball after they beat the Bengals and it's been nothing but downhill
01:52since then.
01:53And I think he's dealing with a flawed roster.
01:55I mean, I told you in week one that I felt like the Patriots were right there with the
01:59Panthers in terms of the roster construction, the amount of money that they spent, the trades
02:05that they made.
02:06I mean, things look to me like they were in a total rebuilding year.
02:11And I do still firmly believe that, that this is this, that's all about rebuilding.
02:16It's all about getting Drake may getting his feet underneath them and allowing him
02:20to become the leader of the team moving forward.
02:22Now I know Patriot fans don't want to hear that, but to me, this is a team that's totally
02:27in rebuild mode.
02:28They're not going to say that they're not going to feel that way.
02:31They're going to want to win every single game.
02:33The coach is going to want to win every single game, but let's face it.
02:37They are just not a good team on paper in terms of their roster, nevermind talent though.
02:43But when he says after that game, this is a soft football team that isn't that on him?
02:51That's an indictment.
02:52It's an indictment of the players for sure.
02:54It's an indictment of the coaching staff.
02:56And I think, you know, when you lose, you say things and you say things because you
03:00want to be on.
03:01I believe that coaches want to be honest, like Bill Belichick would just say onto whoever
03:05and he really wouldn't expand his thoughts.
03:07And now you have a coach that is willing to expand his thoughts.
03:10And I want, I want honesty.
03:12I want to be able to hear what the coach really feels like after a game.
03:16And you know, that's, that's the ex player in him too, by the way.
03:20And when you think about like Antonio Pierce out with Las Vegas, two, three weeks ago,
03:25he said, we have guys out here making business decisions.
03:29I don't think you'd ever hear Andy Reid say that, or John Harbaugh say that, or, you know,
03:34Bill Belichick may not, would have never said anything like that.
03:37He would have kept everything in house.
03:39He would have held people accountable in front of the team and he would have never
03:42thrown the team under the bus.
03:44So I hear X players who are becoming head coaches talking like they're still a part
03:50of the team as a player.
03:52And those are words that players use.
03:53You know, Aaron Rogers last night after the game was over, like an idiot, I stayed up
03:58and watched this.
03:59I wanted to hear what he had to say because you know, I was flat at halftime.
04:02I'm like, you're flat at halftime.
04:04What does that mean?
04:05I mean, if I'm a jet fan, I'm like, well, you gotta be, what are you getting ready
04:10for Pat McAfee on Tuesday?
04:11I mean, what are we doing here?
04:13And yeah, so I, I understand where Gerard Mayo is coming from because I do believe there's
04:17that X player is still in him and he, and he still is talking in, in, in honest terms.
04:24So I do appreciate it, but it does give you some insight as to how the team is playing
04:30and how he views the team playing.
04:32Omar, I think the biggest issue, and I said this a few weeks back is like, he's like Sonny
04:38from a Bronx tale where they're asking him, would you rather be fair to love?
04:41And I don't know if the players fear him.
04:44I think they love him.
04:45And that's the thing that made Belichick such a great coach is the fear level was there.
04:50And can you be a guy in this era that can just coach where guys love you, but they don't
04:58necessarily are willing to run through a brick wall for you.
05:01And I feel like Mayo's fighting that uphill battle, whether it's guys saying stuff or
05:06whether it's him saying stuff about his team and the media, I don't know if you get that
05:11same type of feeling.
05:12I, you know, I would say it's a very good point.
05:14You know, it's a really in-depth point, which is surprising coming from you, Jermaine, you
05:21went deep into the weeds with this one.
05:22And I got to tell you from a psychological standpoint, I'm shocked.
05:27So I don't know how really to answer that.
05:31But yeah, I think it's, it's, it goes back to, and in correspondence to what I just said
05:36about him being an ex player and talking like an ex player, like Antonio Pierce is doing
05:42out in Las Vegas.
05:43I mean, these guys are still close to the players that are in age that are playing.
05:49I know that there's a discussion about whether or not coaches could be the way they were
05:53when we played, especially when I played, cause I played longer than you did ago.
05:58And where they were a little bit tougher on us and they held the hammer on us.
06:01But now with certain players making so much money, it's impossible to hold them accountable.
06:06I don't know how Jeff Albrecht can hold Aaron Rogers accountable for throwing interceptions
06:10or Garrett Wilson, who thinks he's the next coming up, Randy Moss dropping passes in the
06:15midst of a game and changing momentum.
06:17I don't know how these coaches, these ex players who turn into head coaches handle that kind
06:22of stuff because it's really, really difficult.
06:24So Gerard has got his hand, you know, he's got his hands full.
06:28The team is losing.
06:31There is no light at the end of the tunnel for this season.
06:34I think it's going to be about the draft.
06:36It's going to be about off season free agency.
06:39I'm assuming that Robert Kraft is going to give him a couple of years to see if he can
06:43find his footing.
06:44But I know in the middle of a season in which the team is one and six, the only bright spot
06:50right now is the is the play and performance of the rookie quarterback over the last two
06:54weeks.
06:55Boomer, you bring up how bad the roster is around Drake May, though, do you think that
06:58people owe Bill Belichick an apology who put all the blame on him for so many years?
07:03I think Bill Belichick is having a hell of a time.
07:06I don't think anybody need to owe him anything.
07:08He got a lot of money.
07:09He got a lot of Super Bowls.
07:11We all know about his personal life seems like it's going in the right direction for
07:15himself.
07:17He seems to have he's having a hell of a time with the media.
07:20He's on TV every time I turn it on and he looks like he's having a hell of a lot of
07:24fun.
07:25So apologizing to him, I I don't there's no reason to.
07:28I mean, it kind of fizzled out and it kind of got itself worn out.
07:32And, you know, it was a unique situation that lasted a very long time, which is not usually
07:37the way that it goes down in the NFL.
07:39So I know, Courtney, you know, we we have feelings for coach Belichick, but I don't
07:46think he feels like he needs an apology.
07:48And I I certainly think that he'll be back next year doing something on somebody's sideline,
07:52probably, you know, with a place that he chooses to go, which is going to be really, really
07:58interesting when we get to the end of the season.
08:00But we still have Elliott Wolfe here who's making decisions when it comes to who are
08:03the guys that they're bringing in for this roster.
08:05And we're still in a in a terrible spot.
08:08So to put all the blame on Bill Belichick for the last two seasons, that he was making
08:11all the decisions of who was going to be on this roster.
08:14And that's why we're in the position we're in now.
08:16Seems like maybe we had it wrong.
08:18Yeah, I think.
08:20But I will lose and does that, you know, if you have a couple of losing seasons back to
08:23back and you're trying to play with Cam Newton and then you're trying to play with Mack Jones
08:27and say, you know, that's not Tom Brady.
08:29Like Tom Brady is at the top of the spectrum.
08:32And I have to say, listening to him doing the San Francisco, Kansas City game yesterday,
08:37I learned a lot.
08:38You know, he taught viewers a lot about what the hell is going on in the field.
08:42And when you listen to him talk and the way that he thinks as a quarterback and how he
08:46thought as a quarterback tells you a lot about how far away they were from that intensity
08:53when they try to replace him with those quarterbacks that they had on the roster.
08:57And maybe Drake May will be the next guy.
08:59I don't know.
09:00He looks good.
09:01He looks the part.
09:02He stands tall in the pocket.
09:03Seems like he's fearless.
09:05I just don't know if he is as dedicated.
09:07So Tom Brady raised the level of everybody on that team.
09:11Now they had some really good players that they picked, but they also, if we, if we really
09:15want to go down the history of the Patriots and some of the decisions they made to me,
09:20Bill Belichick made a decision to move on from Ty Law, made the decision to move on
09:24from Richard Seymour.
09:25Like he had a real knack to understand when it was time to trade guys at their, at their
09:31highest level or let them go and replace them with other players that he thought could
09:35do the same job, but didn't cost as much.
09:39So that part of it, I think Bill Belichick is about one of the greatest guys manipulating
09:45and seeing the salary cap and how to react to it when he did and how he did it.
09:50Boomer watching that game.
09:51And it was great.
09:52I thought Tom was superb and I am just more impressed than ever with Patrick Mahomes and
09:58Andy Reed.
09:59The way Andy Reed diagrams those plays, I know Mahomes' stats have been not great.
10:03He's the first time in consecutive games without a touchdown pass in a very long time.
10:08But what Mahomes is doing today, is he the MVP despite the six touchdowns and eight interceptions?
10:15I would think, I would think that Jared Goff has got to be the leader in that category
10:18right now.
10:19Jared Goff has had three incredible games in a row.
10:23He's putting up huge numbers.
10:24Detroit looks to be like one of the top teams in the NFC and their win at Minnesota yesterday
10:31was really, really impressive.
10:33However, saying that, I believe that Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady had the same kind of
10:38DNA.
10:39They always won the fourth quarter or it felt like they always won the fourth quarter regardless
10:42of what they did.
10:44The previous three quarters, that fourth quarter, the game was on the line.
10:47If the defense kept it close, like Kansas City has been doing for, the Kansas City defense
10:53has been doing for their offense, then all Patrick Mahomes has to do is make a few plays
10:58here and there, whether it be running or throwing the football.
11:02And Patrick's a winner just like Tom was.
11:04Those guys know how to win football games in the heat of the moment against really good
11:09teams.
11:10And quite frankly, Brock Purdy had his worst game as a pro yesterday.
11:13So I give that, I give the defense of the Kansas City Chiefs the game ball for their
11:18performance yesterday and basically lay it on the feet of Brock Purdy for playing as
11:23poorly as he did.
11:25But you're right, Patrick Mahomes is a winner in the fourth quarter just like Tom Brady
11:28was when he was with the Patriots.
11:30Miles Garrett, Jamis Winston, several Browns players talked about how disgusted they were
11:37with fans booing Deshaun Watson when he was on the ground with that Achilles tear.
11:42You feel the same way about that?
11:44Well, I mean, if you take Miles Garrett's quotes a little bit further and not just put
11:51it in this one little box, yeah, I hate when fans either boo or cheer a player, depending
11:56on how you view it, a player that's hurt regardless of what they've done off the field.
12:01But if you're going to take Miles Garrett's quotes about being a great human being off
12:05the field and then put them in that quote along with why the Browns fans are screaming
12:11at him, I don't, I don't agree with that part of it.
12:13I mean, um, that, that was a little bit over the top.
12:17Um, I feel bad for Deshaun.
12:18He's never ever found his footing.
12:20I don't think he ever again will find his footing and it just another huge mistake,
12:25you know, in a litany of mistakes for the Browns franchise.
12:29I mean, um, I don't care who owns the team.
12:31I don't care who's wearing that uniform.
12:34The people in that front office make the weirdest, well, the Jets are right there too.
12:38But I mean, the, the, the Browns make the weirdest decisions and this decision to do
12:43this, what they did with Deshaun Watson is going to come back and haunt them for years
12:48and years and years.
12:49And it may end up costing a really good coach, Kevin Stefanski's job when it's all of a sudden
12:53done with.
12:54Boomer, you talked about possible MVP, whether it's Jared Goff, I mean, Goff, I think you
12:59have to obviously put, um, Josh Allen in there as well as Lamar Jackson.
13:04Is there a team, if it, if it's the, uh, boomer size and power rankings, where you
13:09looking go, okay.
13:11This team is the number one team on your list, or do you feel like there's some good parody
13:16amongst those top echelon of teams?
13:19I still, I still believe that Baltimore is the best team in the league.
13:22We'll see them tonight against Tampa down in Tampa and Baker Mayfield.
13:26But I think they're the most difficult team to defend from a defensive standpoint because
13:31the two headed monster of Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson are playing unbelievable football
13:36and neither one has to carry the load like they have had to do for their respective teams
13:41because now they're together and John Harbaugh and you know, this offense is just impossible
13:47to stop.
13:48And Zay Flowers is one of the best wide receivers in football.
13:51People don't, they know who he is.
13:53They, they just don't put them in the top tier.
13:55I would put them in the top tier.
13:56That's how good he is.
13:58So they, they have everything, tight ends, wide receivers, a good solid offensive line
14:03and two really good playmakers that make it really hard on the defense.
14:07So from a, from a, from a standpoint of trying to defend somebody, I think in the AFC, it's
14:12got to be Baltimore.
14:13They look like they are unstoppable on offense right now.
14:17Question of the week for you, Boomer Esiason brought to you by McFarland Energy, the region's
14:20most dependable provider of home heating, oil delivery and H expert HVAC services at
14:27McFarland energy.com.
14:29We talked a lot about this last week, but it's, but it's so intriguing to me and I want
14:33your perspective on it.
14:35Why is you brought him up earlier?
14:36Why is Tom Brady a minority owner of the Raiders and not the new England Patriots?
14:43Yeah, because I don't know.
14:45It's weird.
14:46I think Mark Davis was looking for an infusion of money and excitement around his team.
14:51I didn't realize that Tom and Mark had a, a, some sort of a, you know, relationship.
14:56I don't know if this has anything to do with his Fox contract.
14:59I don't know if it has anything to do with, uh, maybe some of the people that work for
15:03Tom that have, uh, uh, you know, inside with, uh, Mark Davis and maybe some of the other
15:08investors within the Raiders.
15:10But yeah, it's bizarre.
15:11The fact that he can actually do games and own a football team is also bizarre.
15:14But then again, when you win as many Superbowls and you are the face of the, the league for
15:19as long as Tom was, I guess you can do it pretty much anything you want, kind of like
15:22Peyton Manning.
15:23Yeah.
15:24Maybe Aaron Rodgers can buy the jets.
15:26Oh man.
15:27I'll tell you what the pieces here are going to, I can't even this morning, I'm in my head
15:32is going to have to be on a swivel.
15:34All right, Boomer.
15:35Well, thanks for taking the time and we will, we will talk to you again next week.
