Controversial “influencer” Adeline Chang Pei Yi was fined RM7,000 by the Sepang Sessions Court on Thursday for an offensive social media post against a child.

According to the facts of the case, the 24-year-old made the offensive post on May 30 this year following a misunderstanding with the child's mother.

00:00Controversial influencer Adeline Changpeyi was fined 7,000 ringgit by the Sepang Sessions
00:10Court on Thursday for an offensive social media post against a child.
00:15The 24-year-old, who was accompanied by her notorious sister Alice, was charged under
00:20Section 233, Subsection 1A of the Communications and Multimedia Act, punishable under Section
00:28233, Subsection 3 of the same Act.
00:33This section provides for a fine not exceeding 50,000 ringgit or imprisonment not exceeding
00:39one year or both, and a further fine of 1,000 ringgit for each day the offence continues
00:43after conviction.
00:46During the hearing before Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman, Adeline said she was unable to follow
00:51the proceedings in Bahasa Malaysia despite indicating to her lawyer, Muhammad Rastan
00:57Abdul Wahab, that she understood the national language.
01:00She requested for a Mandarin interpreter, forcing the court to halt the proceedings
01:05to wait for an available interpreter.
01:09After the charge was read out, Adeline pleaded guilty to committing the offence via the Facebook
01:14application at 11pm on May 30th this year.
01:19According to the facts of the case, the accused made the offensive post following a misunderstanding
01:23with the child's mother.
01:25MCMC prosecuting officer Nazrul Nizam Muhammad Zamri requested an appropriate sentence to
01:31serve as a lesson against cyberbullying.
01:34He said the accused's act of posting the child's picture and claiming the victim was born out
01:39of wedlock was inappropriate and must be taken seriously.
01:43However, Adeline's lawyer pleaded for a minimum fine as his client does not have a steady
01:48income and makes a living through online product reviews.
01:51He added that his client also has a thyroid condition and is currently receiving regular
01:56counselling for psychological treatment.
01:59Adeline was handed a 7,000 ringgit fine in lieu of six months jail.
02:04She also asked for her phone to be returned but was told to file a formal application
02:09through her lawyer.
02:11She paid the fine later.
02:13Adeline gained online notoriety for allegedly repeatedly not paying for services rendered
02:18while her sister Alice is known for her controversial behaviour when she was recently employed at
02:23a food franchise.
