Ten people involved in a brawl near an apartment in Bayan Lepas pleaded guilty to rioting while eight others claimed trial at a Magistrate's Court in Balik Pulau on Friday.

The 16 men and two women, aged between 19 and 40, were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

00:13The 16 men and two women, aged between 19 and 40, were charged with unlawfully gathering
00:18at around 2.30 a.m. on November 23 along Queen's Waterfront in Perziaran Bayan Indah with the
00:26common intention to fight and behave in a hostile manner.
00:29They were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a maximum
00:36jail term of two years, a fine or both upon conviction.
00:41Lawyer Edric Liu of the National Legal Aid Foundation, who represented the 18 accused,
00:47said most of his clients worked in factories or were still in college.
00:52He said the ten who pleaded guilty were remorseful and had saved the court time in doing so.
00:57Liu also appealed for a lenient fine based on their age and it being their first offence.
01:04Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Jin Hong said the incident took place in a public area where
01:10there are other residents and requested a decision that would be an example to others.
01:16Magistrate Chia Hui Ting then imposed a fine of 800 ringgit on each of the ten who pleaded guilty.
01:24She set bail at 1,500 ringgit, with one surety for each of the eight who pleaded not guilty.
01:31In the same court, one of the accused, Muhammad Nur Ismaa Haikal Nur Ismadi, pleaded not guilty
01:37to a separate charge of intentionally causing injury to Khairul Ezzam Khairul Edhi at the
01:42same place and time.
01:44He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries
01:51a punishment of up to one year in jail, or a fine of up to 2,000 ringgit or both.
01:57Liu said Nur Ismaa Haikal works in a coffee shop, earning 60 ringgit a day, and urged
02:04the court to set a nominal bail.
02:06Chia then set bail at 1,500 ringgit with one surety and fixed case mention for February
02:1326 on all nine charges.
02:17At the Sessions Court, Nur Ismaa Haikal also claimed trial to a charge of voluntarily causing
02:22grievous hurt to Muhammad Alif Aliman Mazlan by using a helmet as a weapon at the same
02:27location and time.
02:29He was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code and faces up to 20 years jail, a fine
02:35or caning, upon conviction.
02:38The court set bail at 8,000 ringgit with one surety and ordered Nur Ismaa Haikal to report
02:45to the nearest police station regularly as well as not to contact the victim.
02:50December 19 was fixed for case mention.
02:53It was reported earlier that the fight broke out over a misunderstanding between a couple.
