00:20The IJP gave the order recently while addressing some top senior police officers in Abuja,
00:27according to the force public relations officer, Olumuwa Adejebi who stated this in a news release
00:33on Friday. The statement indicated that the IJP frowned at the rate of cases of extortion of
00:39members of the public by some police operatives. IJP in the statement reassured Nigerians of his
00:46leadership's zero tolerance for corrupt practices amongst officers and men of the police force.
00:52The statement reads in quote, The Inspector General of Police, IJP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun
00:59has expressed concerns and condemnation on the alleged cases of extortion and high-handedness
01:05perpetrated by certain recalcitrant members of the Nigeria Police Force. The IJP made this
01:11known while addressing Assistant Inspectors General of Police, Commissioners of Police,
01:17and Heads of various formations at the In Peace Conference with senior police officers held at
01:22the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan International Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja
01:27recently. The IJP, during his speech, charged the senior officers on proper supervision of the
01:35activities of officers at their various levels and ensure the highest standard of professional
01:40conduct is maintained and upheld in the course of carrying out their lawful duties. The IJP also
01:47ordered the IJP-X Squad, Monitoring Unit, Complaint Response Unit, CRU, and other disciplinary units
01:55to carry out routine checks on the activities of officers across the country as part of efforts to
02:01calm misconduct and corruption tendencies amongst officers and ensure strict punishment is meted on
02:07erring officers and that supervisory officers found wanting in this regard will not be spared
02:13of vicarious liability. Similarly, the IJP issued a stern warning to officers regarding
02:20the unethical practice of name-dropping the IJP and other senior officers to extort money from
02:25unsuspecting members of the public. The IJP emphasized that any officer found guilty of
02:32leveraging his name for fraudulent activities or extortion will face severe disciplinary measures,
02:38reaffirming that the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy
02:43towards corruption, unprofessional behavior, and misconduct. Finally, IJP Egbetokun implored the
02:51public to exercise caution and report any attempts to exploit his name for fraudulent activities or
02:57extortion in investigation of cases, highlighting the crucial role citizens play in collaborative
03:03policing of the society and its police.
