00:00Hey, what's up, MKBHD here.
00:05And every year, like clockwork around the second week of September, assuming no pandemic
00:10related delays, we expect the new iPhone to come out or iPhones since now it's a whole
00:15lineup of phones.
00:16And last year was the biggest iPhone lineup ever unveiled all at once.
00:20We got four different models and we fully expect again this year to see four new models
00:24and the evolving rumors about them have been making headlines for the past couple months
00:29as always.
00:30Real quick first, though, we have finally launched that secret second channel.
00:35It's the studio channel and it's up.
00:37The first video that just dropped today is now live.
00:40It's a studio tour, which a lot of you guys have been asking about.
00:43And now you can finally see the finished space.
00:45You can meet the team and you can head over there and subscribe to see a lot more stuff
00:49like behind the scenes and all the sort of things you've been asking that we don't quite
00:54get a chance to put on the main channel.
00:56It's all over there.
00:57Subscribe soon.
00:58Hopefully you can be one of the first hundred thousand in the first week.
01:01It's one of our goals.
01:02That'd be nice.
01:03Okay.
01:04So I've got four of the new models of the iPhone 13 expected this year, and they map
01:08right alongside last year, 13 mini, the 13, the 13 pro and the 13 pro max.
01:15I'm predicting there's going to be a pretty short video because they are so similar.
01:18Also, of course, it doesn't guarantee a whole lot, but these are just some of the things
01:21that we think we can expect from the next iPhone.
01:24These aren't of course from Apple.
01:26They are made around the things we expect to see.
01:29And so if you want to build cases or accessories for the iPhone, that's what these sort of
01:33models are built to be useful for.
01:35So as we've learned, it's about to be August and these phones in real life are already
01:40pretty much hardware locked somewhere inside Apple's spaceship campus right now as we approach
01:44fall for launch.
01:46But just so we're clear, this is all still technically speculation, but holding these
01:50models in the hand for the first time, it's pretty quickly evident we're looking at pretty
01:55similar designs, right?
01:56Same shapes, same sizes.
01:58This of course lines up with the flat lines and everything from last year's iPhone.
02:02Makes sense.
02:03We've seen them stick with one design for multiple years, and this is the 12's design.
02:08The new stuff that we can actually look at though are number one, the port.
02:13Now a port is technically not a new thing since we've always had ports, but there's
02:17been a rumor that's made the rounds about Apple possibly getting rid of the lightning
02:21port and not switching to USB-C, but just going totally portless, completely wireless
02:26for everything on all the new iPhones or maybe just the pro phones, but possibly across the
02:31whole lineup.
02:32And while I still think they're aiming for that, and I made a whole video about why Apple's
02:35aiming for a portless future, these new models, all of them do have ports.
02:40Now to me, that just says the MagSafe ecosystem is not quite ready to pick up where lightning
02:46left off.
02:47Now there was a big deal made about MagSafe.
02:49It was the new charging standard, the new wireless charging on the back of the iPhone
02:53slapping on there with magnets.
02:55And there are a bunch of really good MagSafe accessories out now.
02:58There's MagSafe compatible cases.
03:00There are things that slap on the back of the phone.
03:02My favorite car mount is really good, the one Moment makes.
03:05I'll link that one below.
03:06I've been using it for a while now.
03:08But even Apple's first party accessories are slowly starting to grow out.
03:12They just dropped that $100 MagSafe battery bank that attaches to the back of the iPhone.
03:17But it really does feel a little early to just jump straight to that and totally get
03:22rid of the port.
03:23It was already kind of a big deal when Apple bumped up from 5 watts to 20 watts of charging
03:28on the iPhone.
03:29MagSafe only supports up to 15 watts.
03:32We're living in a world where there are phones charging at 50, 65, maybe soon 100 plus watts
03:39wirelessly, which is awesome.
03:42And this just isn't quite at the flagship, at the tier that I'd want it to be.
03:46So maybe they're waiting for better wireless charging to make the MagSafe transition easier.
03:52But at this point, it feels too easy to go portless or too early to go portless.
03:56So then the rest of the phone pretty much lines up with the iPhone 12.
04:00Same speaker placement, same thickness and height across the lineup.
04:04Then I did notice slightly lower button placement actually, which I like a lot and feels best
04:09on the bigger phones.
04:10But this is actually only on the middle sized phones, the 13 and the 13 Pro.
04:16The buttons are in the same place on the 13 Pro Max and the 13 Mini, interestingly.
04:21But then one more big change is these cameras, which are somehow all bigger.
04:27So the 13 and 13 Mini here have dual cameras still, but they switch to this diagonal orientation.
04:32And then the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max still have triple cameras.
04:37But look at the new size of these camera modules.
04:40They're bigger and they look pretty similar at first, but I actually think we can read
04:43into these a little bit more than them just being bigger.
04:46So here's my interpretation of this.
04:48In the 13 and the 13 Mini, you've got these two dual cameras now, roughly the same size
04:54of overall module.
04:55They're a diagonal lineup now.
04:58And the lower right one is actually a bit larger, which to me would hopefully mean a
05:03larger sensor back here, which is nice.
05:05We've wanted larger sensors in iPhones for a long time, and they only did one larger
05:11sensor on last year's iPhone, the big 12 Pro Max.
05:15But it's possible, and we see this all the time, where the newest stuff, the best stuff
05:19from last year flagship trickles down in price.
05:21So that could be what we're seeing here with bigger sensor.
05:23Now on the 13 Pro and Pro Max though, the big phones, check this out.
05:28The whole camera bump is a larger footprint, but it's not because the lenses are much bigger.
05:33They're actually just a bit more spread out.
05:36And to me, this might not actually be bigger sensors, but it may be better stabilization.
05:41So you may remember last year on that iPhone 12 Pro Max, that was the only one to feature
05:46advanced sensor shift stabilization, and it was only on the larger primary sensor.
05:51This year, it looks like there may be more room to use this more active, precise sensor
05:56shift stabilization on all of the sensors.
05:59So even if the sensor isn't bigger, or if it's a little bit bigger, they can hold it
06:03still for longer shutter speeds and longer periods of time.
06:07And that gets you less noise in photos without the drawbacks that come from huge sensors
06:12and smartphones like super shallow depth of field fringing.
06:15So those are some interesting things to look forward to behind the new designs of some
06:19of these cameras here.
06:20Now, of course, there's a bunch of other stuff that these new models or mock-ups will never
06:24tell us, like ProMotion.
06:27That's one of the biggest, almost weirdly most interesting rumors about these new phones
06:31because you would think by now where every other phone out there has a higher refresh
06:35rate display, the iPhone being last up, they've got to do it.
06:38We don't know that just from these dummies, but it may just be the Pro models or maybe
06:42across the lineup.
06:43Either way, I hope to see ProMotion.
06:46But then these models don't tell us specs or RAM or anything like that.
06:49We already know what iOS 15 looks like, that should launch typically around the same time
06:53the iPhone does.
06:54They also don't tell us if the notch is the same size.
06:57Now, but there is one thing to notice, which is if you look closely on some of these models,
07:02you can see, you know, they've cut out some smaller sensors underneath the earpiece, but
07:06they didn't move the earpiece all the way up further up higher on the top of the phone.
07:10And I feel like that's only something you would do if you're sort of reorganizing or
07:13sort of just compressing all of these pieces up here in the face ID cluster to try to make
07:19a smaller notch.
07:20So not getting rid of it, but at least giving you some of that screen real estate back now
07:24that the iPhone really just has one of the biggest notches in any phone and has for a
07:28couple of years now.
07:29Then there are still some rumors about them possibly bringing an in-display fingerprint
07:33reader to bring touch ID back and maybe combining that with face ID.
07:37As much as I would like to see it personally, I feel like this one's less likely I could
07:41see them just totally ignoring fingerprint sensors and sticking with face ID.
07:46But that's it.
07:47That's really all we get from these sort of models when they come out every year.
07:50We don't even know if it's going to be called the iPhone 13.
07:54Could be 12S for all we know, although that's pretty unlikely because there was no 11S.
07:58It seems like they're just going just straight with the plus one number from here on out.
08:03But yeah, what do you think?
08:05Is this upgrade, I'm just, I'm holding the model of the Pro Max right now, is 120 Hertz
08:10display and possibly some better cameras on the back enough to get you to upgrade?
08:17And I guess that's a bit of a weird question because most people with last year's phone
08:22shouldn't be upgrading anyway.
08:23But on older phones, even to tell the difference, if some of these smaller models like the mini,
08:28the 13 mini or the 13 are really just a slight camera improvement and some bumped specs,
08:35feels like almost the same phone.
08:36But I'm curious what you guys think of what you've seen from these models.
08:39Either way, that's been it.
08:41Thanks for watching and definitely make sure to check out the studio channel.
08:45Really excited about its launching and I'll see you guys over there.
08:47All right, catch you later.
08:49Peace.
