00:00Hey what's up guys, MKBHD here, and you know what's exciting?
00:08We just started the second half of 2020 and we're expecting a lot more major releases
00:14in just the tech world in general.
00:16We saw a lot of minor stuff in the first half, but just in the smartphone world, Pixel 5
00:20is probably coming along with maybe Pixel 4a, Galaxy Note 20 and maybe Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy
00:27Fold 2, Asus ROG Phone 3, OnePlus Nord and iPhone 12 just to name a few.
00:35So this video is what I'm hoping for based on what we think we know about iPhone 12 and
00:43what I have here which are the classic mid-year dummy models of the iPhone that come out that
00:48sort of ideally, hopefully represent something like what we're going to see in the final
00:52version in September.
00:54So the theme that I'm going to blanket over everything we see here is iPad Pro.
00:59A lot of the changes and improvements and additions we're expecting and hoping to see
01:03in this next iPhone are kind of already in the iPad Pro, one of my favorite gadgets
01:08in a long time.
01:09But first thing you'll notice about this iPhone 12 stuff is the sizes.
01:13There's three sized models here representing basically what we'll see as iPhone 12, iPhone
01:1912 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
01:23But this time as you can see the non-Pro phone is the smallest iPhone unlike previous years
01:27where it was like the middle size.
01:29And then the approximate screen sizes we're looking at here are 5.4 inches, 6.2 inches
01:35and 6.7 inches.
01:36Now if you know me, you know I'm a big phone person but I've been using the smaller iPhone
01:40lately and I think a lot of people are going to appreciate this smallest version of the
01:46iPhone 12.
01:47It's like the closest thing to what we've been hoping for which is a refinement of
01:50that old square design.
01:53And 5.4 inches as a screen size is surprisingly compact.
01:57Just for some perspective, the last time we had a Samsung flagship of that screen size
02:03was Galaxy S7.
02:05So I've always given out a best small phone of the year and my smartphone awards at the
02:08end of every year.
02:09And it seems like it's always just the smallest iPhone versus whoever else decided to make
02:14something like a small flagship in the past year because it's just a rare thing to do.
02:18So I have a feeling it's going to look the same way this year with this small iPhone.
02:22And then at the other end of the spectrum, the biggest iPhone is even bigger, 6.7 inches
02:28is massive.
02:29That would be the biggest iPhone ever and also consequently their biggest battery ever
02:34and the most room internally in any iPhone.
02:36But really I got to say, after all these iOS 14 updates we got with the widgets and everything,
02:41this is probably the phone that's most likely to take the biggest advantage of it.
02:45This is probably the phone I'm going to end up with.
02:46But if you want a breakdown of all the iOS 14 features that we have seen, link below
02:50the like button.
02:51It's a lot of stuff and it's, I think, one of the biggest updates ever.
02:54But anyway, here's a little mock-up, thanks to the magic of video editing, of what that
02:58huge screen might look like on iPhone 12 Pro.
03:01That's my iOS 14 home screen right now and it's just a massive canvas for watching videos
03:06and gaming, multitasking and all that sweet iOS 14 picture-in-picture stuff.
03:11Plus, the notch does look a little bit smaller when the screen is a little bit bigger.
03:15And I guess that brings us naturally to the design, which you've definitely noticed by
03:19now.
03:20Straight from the iPad Pro, we got these squared off flat sides.
03:24And you know what that means, it'll stand up on its own without a stand now.
03:30I don't know why that's so satisfying to me, but it's just fun that it does that.
03:35Now I know most people have a case on their phone, but if I can just speak to the small
03:39minority of us who carry a phone naked, who don't have a case on it and who feel it every
03:44day, the rounded sides of the iPhone were just a little less satisfying to hold.
03:52And these flat sides, it just feels more secure and just more confidence-inspiring.
03:57So beyond just the aesthetics of looking better with flat sides, I really do think it feels
04:02better to have flat sides.
04:03So now it inherits that cleaner, more modern iPad Pro look.
04:08And we're still looking at a pretty similar camera bump on the back, Apple logo in the
04:11middle of the phone.
04:13It's still familiar iPhone, as we've said for like the last 10 straight years, but
04:17that's what Apple does.
04:18You know, they know being a better, but still familiar version of what they've done for
04:21so long is just going to work.
04:24And that's about as big of a design change as we expect to see.
04:28Now the notch on the front, this is something the models can easily get wrong.
04:33My wishlist is smaller notch just purely for aesthetic reasons.
04:37But I also know that to keep face ID and to keep all those sensors means you still got
04:41to keep some kind of notch.
04:43So I don't expect it to be a drastic change until they get rid of it completely.
04:47That day may come somewhere in the distant future when they decide to add touch ID back
04:52underneath the glass of the iPhone.
04:54But generally, I wouldn't expect any drastic change with the notch this year.
04:58Also, you know how last year they said face ID would get faster and work at more angles.
05:04I hope they take another meaningful step in that direction again this year, because you
05:08know, it's better by a little bit, but I still even at like a 45 degree angle have
05:12to do that, like lean to get it to see and recognize my face.
05:16So I hope that gets better.
05:17And then these models are usually pretty accurate with external dimensions.
05:21And so if they are again here, these new iPhones are actually pretty thin, you know, just a
05:25tiny bit, maybe a half a millimeter thinner than current phones, but they just feel thinner
05:30because of the flat sides.
05:32And just overall, the design reminds me not of the iPhone 5S, possibly the most beloved
05:36iPhone design of all time, but it actually reminds me of iPhone 4, just more of a straight
05:42up glass sandwich that actually lacks the chamfered edges.
05:45You know, maybe they'll get that chamfer machine going for lucky iPhone 13.
05:50And then, you know what else we can't tell from these dummy models is the display's refresh
05:54rate.
05:55So number one item on my wishlist for the new iPhones is a promotion, 120 Hertz display,
06:01just like we've seen on a bunch of other phones so far this year, just like we've seen on
06:04iPad Pro.
06:06Rumor mille suggests we should see it on at least some of the new iPhones, maybe just
06:10the pro models, maybe just the biggest one.
06:14That's another one of the weird rumors kicking around right now, but I am looking forward
06:17to a catching up and having a high refresh rate on the new iPhone.
06:21That port at the bottom, probably lightning again, you know, as much as I wish they'd
06:24also grab USB type C from the iPad Pro, this is one of those things Apple's been the most
06:29stubborn about.
06:30Not that there's anything physically wrong with the lightning port for most people, it's
06:34just USB type C is better and way more universal.
06:38And then let's talk about these cameras for a second.
06:40So not expecting a huge drastic change for the new cameras, but there have been some
06:45lines in iOS 14 code dug up that suggest a couple of new features.
06:50So currently iPhones max out at 4K 60, or if you want super slow motion, 240 FPS, that's
06:561080p.
06:57But those new lines of code suggest new iPhones will be able to do 4K, 240 FPS, which is
07:03just silly.
07:05But it's funny, I have dedicated cameras here in the studio that are not capable of 4K,
07:11240 FPS.
07:12I think the red camera is barely capable of that in the first place.
07:16That's just Apple straight flex in their image processing pipeline and their new performance,
07:21wherever the new chip is in the iPhone should be top notch as usual.
07:25Get it?
07:26Top notch?
07:27Anyway, you can see on the models, the smallest iPhone, the iPhone 12 has two cameras while
07:32the pro models have three.
07:34Makes sense, but it also has me wondering about that LiDAR.
07:38Remember LiDAR on the iPad Pro's cameras for better and faster AR experiences?
07:43The question for me when we saw that was, okay, is that now required for Apple's vision
07:48of the future of AR?
07:49And if so, are we going to see it in every new iPhone?
07:52So that's an unknown right now, but that's something to keep an eye out for.
07:54As of right now, this suggests we won't have LiDAR.
07:58And also, another little thing, you see this extra little button down here on the bottom
08:02left corner on this model?
08:04What is that?
08:05It's not the power button.
08:06That's still in its normal place on the top right.
08:09So this little extra button, which is on the bottom left of the 12 Pro and on the middle
08:16left and middle right of the 12 Pro Max, is that a fingerprint reader?
08:21Is that a smart connector for some sort of accessories or wireless charging accessory?
08:26My answer is, I don't know.
08:28It doesn't appear at all in the smallest non-Pro iPhone.
08:31The rumors suggest it's probably not a smart connector and maybe just a magnetic charging
08:36accessory or something like that.
08:38But we don't have, of course, the final iPhone in front of us, do we?
08:42So that's some speculation we're going to have to keep an eye on.
08:44And then 5G.
08:45This is another one that you can't tell from the models, but we're expecting 5G to make
08:49its way to the iPhone 12 lineup.
08:52And again, it could have some variety across the line where we see millimeter wave only
08:56on certain models, or we might not see 5G on every single new iPhone 12.
09:01That's up to Apple.
09:02But generally, when you get a 5G phone, you're expecting higher prices because of the new
09:06modems and higher power draw.
09:08But again, the biggest phone has the biggest battery ever in an iPhone.
09:11So we'll see how Apple handles that.
09:13And then a frosted glass back, potentially, on the Pro.
09:18Like as long as we're doing wishlist stuff, if we're just looking at how reflective...
09:22If we could have a non-glossy black phone, like maybe like a matte black phone this year,
09:33that would be pretty sick.
09:35But anyway, that is pretty much it.
09:37And honestly, taking a step back, I think this new hardware design combined with iOS
09:4214 is potentially one of the biggest changes to the iPhone we've seen in a long time.
09:48And I'm liking a lot of it.
09:49Again, nothing is final.
09:50It's still months away.
09:51This is all a combination of speculation and rumors and my own wishlist.
09:55But there's a lot to look forward to for the second half of 2020, including iPhone 12.
10:00Let me know what you think in the comment section below, what you're expecting.
10:03Either way, thanks for watching.
10:06Catch you guys very soon in the next one.
10:08Peace.
