00:00If you're a gamer, there's no question you should absolutely get a high refresh rate

00:12times a second which makes gameplay look and feel so much smoother than a regular 60Hz

00:51Now some of this is similar to my recent Samsung 240Hz video but I want to go further here
00:56and as I said in that video, the tricky part to this is actually being able to show you
01:01the benefits of high refresh in a YouTube video that's capped at 60fps.
01:06But there is a way around it and that's by showing you footage in slow motion so you
01:10can actually see how many extra frames you get which hopefully will give you some idea
01:14of how it might look at normal speed.
01:17But having said that, if you can, I'd definitely try and see this in person for yourself.
01:21Maybe you can go to an electronic store and maybe they'll have one to show you or a friend's
01:24house because really you do have to see it in person to get the full experience.
01:29Now to show you what I mean, let's look at some side-by-side game footage at 144Hz 1440p
01:35and 240Hz at 1080p and I've recorded all of this with an AVA media capture card.
01:41So it's pretty clear, especially in slow motion, quite how smooth movement and actions are
01:45compared to 60Hz and at full speed this can genuinely transform how a game plays.
01:51To be clear, while a refresh rate is the number of frames the monitor can display in
01:55a second, the actual number of frames you'll see, your FPS, will depend on the game, the
02:00graphics settings and how powerful your PC is but we'll come back to this.
02:04So why does it make a difference?
02:06Well for every frame on a 60Hz screen we get 2.4 frames with a 144Hz monitor and 4 frames
02:12with a 240Hz one.
02:14This means gameplay can be much smoother and the step up from 60 to 144Hz is a huge improvement
02:20and while the change from 144Hz to 240Hz is not as obvious, it's still very impressive.
02:26In either case, it makes a big difference, particularly in fast paced, competitive multiplayer
02:30games.
02:31So it's smoother and it looks nicer but can a high refresh rate monitor actually make
02:35you win more in games?
02:37Well personally, yeah, I reckon it could.
02:39So having low input lag and low response times are important as well on any gaming monitor
02:44but so is the frame rate.
02:45The time between frames at 60Hz adds a lot to the lag you perceive between clicking the
02:50mouse and seeing the result on the screen and so as the time between frames at higher
02:54refresh rates is lower, the action appears on the screen quicker.
02:58Nvidia actually ran a recent study where they found players with higher frame rates got
03:03better overall win ratios.
03:05For example, say an enemy is coming around the corner.
03:08If you're getting more frames in a given second, there's a chance you'll see them
03:11several frames earlier than you would on a normal 60Hz screen.
03:16Which is all important where quick reactions make the difference between winning and, well,
03:20usually in my case, not winning.
03:22So the higher the frame rate, the more up to date visual information you're getting
03:25which could give you an advantage.
03:27Now to my eye, and actually even harder to show you, is that the image also appears to
03:31be a bit clearer thanks to reduced ghosting.
03:34Which is that weird effect where moving objects leave a blurry trace of where they were in
03:39the previous frame.
03:40And so as you get more frames in a given second, the effect is reduced.
03:44Of course you can reduce it even further by choosing a monitor with a variable refresh
03:48rate such as G-Sync, which also removes ugly screen tearing and stutter.
03:53But there is something else to consider because while these monitors can output 144 and 240Hz
03:58refresh rates, which is great, it's actually up to your PC or your laptop to determine
04:03whether you take full advantage of that.
04:05If you're only getting 100FPS at Apex or PUBG, then you're obviously not maxing out
04:09that 144 or even 240Hz refresh.
04:12So the actual frame rate that you get will very much depend on the kind of games you
04:16play.
04:17Obviously less demanding titles can let you max out these displays more easily.
04:20But if you play graphically intensive AAA titles, then you'll probably need to drop
04:24your settings or even invest in a more powerful graphics card.
04:27But it's worth bearing in mind that even if you can't max out the monitor right now,
04:31chances are if you upgrade your PC in the future, then you'll be able to take better
04:35advantage of it.
04:36And of course high refresh doesn't just benefit games.
04:39Everyday desktop tasks feel much smoother, from scrolling through webpages, moving windows
04:44around, or even something as simple as moving the mouse cursor, it all feels smoother and
04:48more precise.
04:49Okay, next question, 144Hz vs 240Hz, which is better?
04:53I mean, the answer should seem obvious, but actually it comes down to the games that you
04:58play.
04:59I actually think 144Hz is the better choice for most people.
05:02They're cheaper, gaming on them is still light years better than a 60Hz monitor, and
05:06also given current graphics technology, you're more likely to stand a chance of hitting frame
05:10rates close to what they offer.
05:12You can also find high quality 1440p panels at 144Hz, whereas right now 240Hz models tend
05:18to be limited to 1080p.
05:20However, if you're all about that speed, and particularly if you play less demanding
05:24competitive games like Overwatch or CSGO, then I think you should consider a 240Hz 1080p
05:30to get the best advantage.
05:32But you'll probably still want to dial down some graphics settings or have a fairly powerful
05:35rig in order to get close to that magic 240fps.
05:39In terms of pricing, a 24-inch 144Hz monitor will start from around £140, which isn't
05:45that much more than a 60Hz screen, whereas 240Hz models start at just under £300.
