00:00:00champion at Laguna Seca. Alongside is Paul Tracy, a third front row start for
00:00:04this exciting sophomore. He was quickest in the morning warm-up. In the second
00:00:08row, it's Emerson Fittipaldi. He's won three of the last five IndyCar events.
00:00:12Alongside is Scott Goodyear, the Michigan 500 winner, currently fifth in the points.
00:00:17In row number three, it is Mario Andretti. Last week, he was voted as the driver of
00:00:22the quarter century. Alongside is Bobby Rahal, a four-time winner here at Laguna
00:00:26Seca. In row number four, it's John Andretti, seeking his second career
00:00:30victory on a road course. Alongside, Al Unzer Jr., the runner-up here the last
00:00:35two years. In row number five, Scott Pruitt, his final drive for True Sports
00:00:39Racing. And alongside is Eddie Cheever, taking his final ride for the Chip
00:00:43Ganassi team. In row number six, it's Mike Robb, driving for A.J. Poit and Jimmy
00:00:48Vassar. In row seven, Raul Boisel and Scott Brayton. In the eighth row, Danny Sullivan
00:00:54and Stefan Johansen. Ted Krampus is inside the ninth row with Eric Bachelar
00:00:59alongside. In the tenth row, it's Jero Machusta and Brian Till. Row 11, Christian
00:01:05Danner and Didier Tej. In row 12, Willie T. Rips and Buddy Lazier. In row 13, it's
00:01:12Dennis Vitolo and IndyCar rookie Tony DiTomaso. And the 14th and final row,
00:01:17Benicio Salmi and Finland's Taro Pomra. Those are the drivers. Here is
00:01:23the challenge, this wonderful course here at Laguna Seca. Lots of uphills,
00:01:28downhills, and plenty of character. Laguna Seca is an interesting mixture here of
00:01:32slow, medium, and high-speed corners. There are numerous surface changes here
00:01:36also. In fact, the older surface is very abrasive and wears these racing tires
00:01:41out at an alarming rate. Unusual elevation changes here are a unique
00:01:45feature at Laguna Seca. But the most famous corner of all here is the Corkscrew.
00:01:50Here it is here. It's still a shocker to first-time participants here at Laguna
00:01:55Seca. The most popular passing area? Well, it's right down after this corner here,
00:01:59the braking zone for Turn 11. And you're right on board here, one of our onboard
00:02:04cameras with Scott Brayton. You can see as they run in here, Derek, brakes there
00:02:08and then sweep to the left. And this is the key. Brayton is wide now. It leaves
00:02:12the door open down the inside. That's where we see the brave passing move.
00:02:16That's the area we're going to watch all afternoon. So we'll have views for you
00:02:21from Scott Brayton's camera. This view looking out the back of Bobby Ray Hall's
00:02:24camera. Al Unser Jr. will have one looking head-on at him, of course. One
00:02:28over his shoulder as well. You can see it right there. And then Michael Andretti, of
00:02:33course, is one of the big contenders. You'll be looking over his right-hand
00:02:36shoulder. And we also have a second camera which is mounted looking rearward
00:02:39along the left side of his car. So plenty of onboard camera coverage for you here
00:02:44today. In the pits, of course, we have Jan Vigas and Gary Gerald. And for some last-minute
00:02:49updates, let's start with Jan. That's right, Paul. A quick update on the Walker
00:02:53Motorsports crew and Scott Goodyear. In the final morning warm-up this morning,
00:02:56they blew an engine. That's two this weekend. They changed that engine in one
00:03:00hour and 13 minutes. They will not know for sure until the green flag flies
00:03:04whether everything is okay with that. They're waiting here to find out whether
00:03:08that Chevy A will do the job. Let's go down to Gary Gerald. Jan, we've talked a
00:03:12lot about the pressure on the drivers in the championship hunt. It sounds like a
00:03:15cliche, but the pressure is felt by every member of the team on this side of the
00:03:19pit wall. They know that if they can get their driver one or two second
00:03:23advantage here on pit road in the two expected stops today, it could be the
00:03:27difference between a championship or an also-ran. It's electric down here as we
00:03:32get ready. They'll be coming down the hill and turning around at corner 11,
00:03:36headed for Nick Funaro in a green, Paul. The excitement builds as this season
00:03:40comes to its climax now. The weather couldn't be better. They talked about
00:03:44this course as a possible Formula One circuit in the U.S. You tell me there
00:03:47aren't Formula One fans here? As they wish, Michael the best as he moves to
00:03:51McLaren and Formula One for next year. What we look ahead to, 84 hard-fought
00:03:56laps. Race record on this, a newer circuit for the past couple of years,
00:04:00103.6 miles an hour. We expect the stops at about lap 33, though they're open all
00:04:06the way to 35. How do they do on natural terrain circuits? Michael Andretti,
00:04:10here's how he's done this year, and then Bobby Rahal. Consider that he's had an
00:04:15excellent year on other portions of the course, but not on the road courses. But
00:04:21weigh that off with the fact that Bobby Rahal has won four times on this circuit.
00:04:27And now the field begins to roll up the hill. Nick Funaro has the green flag,
00:04:32and we are ready and running at Laguna Seca, California. As already, Michael
00:04:37Andretti shows what he is capable of. Drops across the front of Paul Tracey.
00:04:41Emerson Fittipaldi drops into third place. That's Scott Goodyear that is in fourth
00:04:45now. Michael got the all-important drop on Paul Tracey. He knew well that Paul
00:04:51Tracey is of the brave, aggressive style, just like Michael's. And Paul Tracey
00:04:56knew if he could outbrake Michael in the first corner, he might beat him. Michael
00:05:00took the advantage. All of the field safely through the first three sets of turns.
00:05:05Michael Andretti continues to lead and pull away. Right behind him is Tracey.
00:05:09There's Fittipaldi. Look at Al Unser Jr., though, as he starts his charge up to the
00:05:13front. He moved inside of Scott Goodyear on that last corner. Now they begin to
00:05:17climb the hill. The opening laps when the tires are very cool, the brave drivers can
00:05:22pull off some unusual moves. Al Jr. is doing that on this opening lap. Down
00:05:27through the corkscrew for the first time as the elevation falls off very rapidly.
00:05:31This is a roller coaster ride for the drivers. Down to a right-hand turn while
00:05:35Tracey runs in second. Michael begins to inch away here on this first lap. The pit
00:05:40entrance is right on this part of the circuit as well. On the opening laps, if
00:05:43you can pull away a little cushion on the second-place car, it often gives you that
00:05:49type of advantage you need and secure to give you a continuing advantage for the
00:05:54rest of the race. But Michael Andretti, as always, we know we've seen many times,
00:05:58spectacular in the early parts of these races. Emerson, Fittipaldi, and then Mario
00:06:03Andretti sits behind Emo in fourth place. Then Scott Goodyear. Al Unser Jr. was not
00:06:08able to resolve that battle in his favor and has fallen back behind Goodyear.
00:06:14This is the infield section here. Very fast right-hander, 160 miles an hour through
00:06:19there. Then a quick braking area. And as we watch Mario, we wonder what role might
00:06:24he play in this day. Could he be a blocker for his son and help him along with the
00:06:29championship? Behind Scott Goodyear, there is Bobby Rahal appearing for the first time
00:06:34as he tries to work his way up so carefully to the front of the field. We ride with him now.
00:06:39This is the uphill run to the corkscrew.
00:06:43Slowest part of the racetrack. And the downhill run. This is like a roller coaster here.
00:06:50It gets faster and faster the further down the hill he goes.
00:06:55And one car off and on the course very quickly. Yellow flag only in that zone
00:07:05as he gets off and on. And now we're back with Bobby Rahal.
00:07:10Rahal runs in sixth place. There's the top of the order with Michael Andretti
00:07:17leading from the green flag, which was a little bit of a surprise here at Laguna Seca.
00:07:25Okay, continues at Laguna Seca. The battle for the IndyCar championship. Scott Goodyear
00:07:30running in fifth place continues to worry. Mario Andretti sitting just ahead of him
00:07:35at the front of the order. It is Michael Andretti and then Paul Tracy
00:07:39followed by Tracy's teammate Emerson Fittipaldi. Great performance by Scott Goodyear here. Still
00:07:44ahead of Bobby Rahal as we watch him here. So little testing done by this team and by far
00:07:50their best road course qualifying. And Rahal has to follow him. That's the rear wing of the
00:07:55McKenzie car and Rahal has followed him lap after lap now and is not able to make up that deficit
00:08:01to Goodyear. Closest fight on the course right now is this three-way battle led by Scott Goodyear
00:08:07at this point. You can see Eddie Cheever closing in as well. This is where the point contenders
00:08:13run at this moment in the race and we'll keep you updated in this way throughout the run as well.
00:08:18Bobby Rahal of course running where he is really has to move up because Michael Andretti is in the
00:08:25point scoring position at this moment. Now something we're going to watch for here is
00:08:30all throughout the testing that the teams did before race weekend here they found that the
00:08:34tire wear was phenomenal particularly on the older surfaces that they're on right now. It's very
00:08:39abrasive. It wears the rubber away so everybody is mindful that the handling may change on these cars
00:08:46so they're going to let things settle down and see how good or bad the handling becomes on these
00:08:51individual cars. Report from the course marshals earlier that Eddie Cheever there in the nine car
00:08:57got together with Scott Pruitt in the opening lap so we're watching his car for possible damage.
00:09:02You can see that behind him with John Andretti and the rest a nice battle is developing here.
00:09:07Looking there you can see the damage on the side of that car. Now let's go to Gary Gerald
00:09:11get an update on this machine. Well after that contact there was concern that Cheever may have
00:09:16had some of the plumbing either the oil cooler or radiators in the left side pod damaged but the
00:09:20crew thinks that everything is all right. Eddie continues out there on course it's a battle we
00:09:24understand for eighth ninth and tenth positions. Exactly what it is and there is nothing on that
00:09:29car that seems to be slowing Eddie down. Difficult weekend for Cheever broke a drive flange in the
00:09:35early session missed that and that is critical on road course when you miss a complete practice
00:09:39session because you tend to fall further and further behind your competition. Just behind Bobby
00:09:45Rahal that is of course Eddie Cheever and then John Andretti follows him as we watch the leaders
00:09:50come through. Here comes Mario Andretti running in fourth place with that entire battle lined up
00:09:56behind him and they are all closing on one another. They are calling a good tight battle
00:10:00here Mario said this morning he really likes the handling of the car they think they have a very
00:10:04good race car he really had no complaints whatsoever the only thing he was thinking
00:10:09about was the outcome not from his point of view but obviously from Michael's. Working lap number
00:10:15five approaching that critical point that Derek already mentioned where the tires may begin to
00:10:20change and that might change the complexion of the race. Let's take a look at this view from
00:10:27Junior's on board. This is the start of the race you can see a traffic jam look what happens here
00:10:34a stone flies up from one of the it looks like Mario's car smashes the camera lens and then he
00:10:40continues to try and make that move to the inside that's why you have bulletproof visors on the
00:10:46helmets of these drivers using these cars. It doesn't take much and with the sand and gravel
00:10:50that's off the edge of this course anything that gets pitched backwards gets pitched back at an
00:10:55amazing velocity and now if you watch the in-car cameras regularly you can see that we do have a
00:11:00screen that can clean off dirt. I'm sorry we don't have anybody that can fix glass. Then after the
00:11:06rock hit our lens didn't bother little Al but watch this. Oh that is the turn six area on the
00:11:14run up to the corkscrew and look what Al Junior did try to get inside didn't make the move and
00:11:20put himself offline and went straight across the groove off into the dirt a risky move to make but
00:11:26lucky that he got away with it. At the front it remains Michael Andretti being chased now by Paul
00:11:34Tracy and Paul is beginning to close in. This is the 13th time this year that Michael Andretti has
00:11:40led the opening lap of the race and he has not given up that position since the green flag now
00:11:46seven laps ago. Let's go pit side again Jan Beekes. Well Paul the Neumann-Haas team had two
00:11:51agendas in qualifying. One was to make sure that Michael Andretti got pole position and secondly to
00:11:57make sure that Mario Andretti out qualified Bobby Rahal. Later on in the race that could be very
00:12:02important not to say that Mario would block him however obviously if you drive a car in a certain
00:12:07way it makes it very difficult it gives him another player in the championship. So as far as Neumann-Haas is
00:12:13everything exactly according to plan so far. One of the spectators here this weekend is Nigel
00:12:19Mantle who will step into Michael Andretti's car for next season the reigning world champion in
00:12:26Formula One and one of the things he mentioned last night at dinner to me was that he really
00:12:31enjoys the camaraderie the easygoing spirit of this and the fact that most of these teams
00:12:36don't race as teams they race as individual cars but today at Neumann-Haas we could see
00:12:42some teamwork. Oh absolutely we can see teamwork remember these championships are so vital we
00:12:47touched on it in the opening there is such a huge amount of financial benefits that goes to a team
00:12:52that is on top everybody likes to follow the winner and the team that's on top. Well Michael's
00:12:57on top now but look at Tracy inch ever closer as these laps go on here. Eight laps complete Michael
00:13:04Andretti has led from the green the championship battle continues at this moment it has been
00:13:10controlled by Michael Andretti. From here on the Monterey Peninsula the beautiful 17 mile drive and
00:13:17this is the famous Lone Cypress standing alone out on the rocks at the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
00:13:24Inland it's this battle that continues with Paul Tracy trying to catch Michael Andretti and at the
00:13:30moment it is still a matter where Michael Andretti holds firmly on to a championship crown but Bobby
00:13:35Rahal is trying to inch his way forward. Interestingly enough these are not the fastest
00:13:40cars on the circuit the fastest car throughout the entire early run has been that car sitting
00:13:45back in third. Number five Emerson Fittipaldi as they encounter Buddy Lazear and move around him
00:13:50on the circuit we're at a point now where with the sun shining down the tires are in question
00:13:54and they're also running in traffic. That's right I think these Penske cars are very well set up here
00:14:00for these conditions I think Paul Tracy is going to be able to inch nearer to Michael.
00:14:05Mario one of the complaints he had this morning was that when the tires do go off the rear tires
00:14:10go first. Oh as we watch Rahal he's all over the back of Goodyear here but as the rear tires go off
00:14:16the cars get loose and of course when you get a loose condition it only gets worse as the race
00:14:22goes on. Rahal of course needs fourth position if he is to score a championship that's two positions
00:14:28up from here. Look at the two of them locked between Tracy and Michael Andretti as they come
00:14:33past traffic at the back of the field in the first corner. Michael is very very difficult to pass he's
00:14:39very good at defensive driving we'll watch his line because he will tighten up the entry to
00:14:45the corners making it very difficult for Tracy to make a move down the inside but remember
00:14:50Tracy is one of the bravest men now in racing style very much like Michael. And Alan Sir Jr.
00:14:57at the edge of the course pointed backwards looks like he lost it in the first turn
00:15:02and if he can only get it going and he's going to win back in the fight but is the engine dead
00:15:07or does he have to wait for traffic? Well he's got to wait for traffic if the engine's running
00:15:11but I'm not sure it looks you know it's not running he's dead he's gonna have to get a tow truck.
00:15:18And there comes the IndyCar safety team to give him help and get him started
00:15:22but this could be the final moment for Alan Sir Jr. in any bid at all he may have had for
00:15:28the championship he was running 10th he's falling further backwards. They did such a good job all
00:15:33year to bring this new development Galmar car but as we watch him here the championship is
00:15:38going out the window. And look at little Al he says go push me get me out of here as fast as you
00:15:42can they've got him started the engine restarted quickly that was very lucky on a warm day for
00:15:47little Al he's back into the fight. That's one of the nice things Manson will enjoy next year if
00:15:51every spin distorts the engine he can get a push start in Formula One your day is over if you stop
00:15:57the engine. So now 12 laps are complete Michael Androni is still the leader of the race an
00:16:02interesting report but Paul Tracy very soon may head for the pits if he does so it would be plenty
00:16:08early and that would mean that the question about tires is finally a very real problem.
00:16:14That would be an interesting piece of strategy we're going to have to wait to see what happens
00:16:18but definitely in a traffic situation Tracy lost out to Michael let's just watch now if they both
00:16:24stay in clear road how long it takes Tracy to claw back up to the rear wing of Michael
00:16:29if he's able to do it. Moving toward the pits here is a strong commitment there you see Roger Penske
00:16:37and the team waiting for Paul Tracy he would have to swing way wide on the exit of this corner
00:16:42which he does and he heads down the pit road his pit is just around this corner Gary Durrell is
00:16:47there. Paul you talked about the tire wear this is visual evidence this is very early they're now
00:16:52committed to a three-stop race Tracy watching intently as Penske gives him the hold sign
00:16:58a problem momentarily at the left front now everybody's clear he comes off the jacks in 10.7
00:17:04seconds excellent stop for Tracy spectacular performance by that Penske crew of course
00:17:10they're among the best Gary Brion back there working the right rear another car under tow
00:17:15at the edge of the course in the first turn and you can see Paul Tracy rejoins in that battle at
00:17:21the bottom of the top 10 actually rejoins the course in eighth place so while he lost second
00:17:27he really didn't fall that far backward well I can't quite grasp yet why they could make a decision
00:17:33because the tires had gone off because he was running every bit as fast as Michael so we're
00:17:38gonna have to wait to see how this plays out I thought for a minute maybe he ran a light fuel
00:17:42load that put him out of sync with the pit stop however that's an unusual move by Roger Penske hey
00:17:48he's made unusual moves in the past and has come out on top of the gamble to commit him to a three-pit
00:17:53stop race at first blush it's pretty hard to figure out what that strategy might be here's
00:17:57an interesting situation Rahul again under heavy brake he closes right up behind the rear wing
00:18:03of Scott Goodyear's car but look what happens here this is the downhill run to the fast left
00:18:08Goodyear seems to be able to pull out a nice cushion and here's the critical area here for
00:18:12Rahul he's too far behind Goodyear to make a legitimate passing move down the inside and of
00:18:18course with Scott Goodyear in front running in fourth place that's exactly the position
00:18:23that Bobby Rahul needs if Rahul can get there then he can grasp that championship ground as well
00:18:29let's just ride for a little bit here and listen to Bobby Rahul as he moves through the gears and
00:18:34around Laguna Seca
00:18:56oh you can see Rahul there catches the correction of the car that car is already loose oversteering
00:19:05so
00:19:15and the sweep down through the corkscrew for Bobby Rahul as he continues pursuit
00:19:20of Scott Goodyear let's get an update on Paul Tracy's pit stop from Gary Gerald
00:19:24Paul there was concern about a possible flat spot on the tires for Tracy they pulled the set off we
00:19:29could see no visual evidence of any flat spots they've looked the tires over he was concerned
00:19:34they've retired him as we mentioned it's committed now to a three-stop race that's why they were in
00:19:39early well Gary you talk about flat spots we've checked in with the Gauss Greco crew Allenger
00:19:46Jr. stalled because he spun they weighed out new tires expected him to make a pit stop to replace
00:19:51those flat spotted tires Allenger Jr. did not come in he did not want to commit himself to a
00:19:56three-stop race he's still obviously a championship contender feels that a three-stop race really
00:20:01takes you out of the running Paul so with that change at the front of the order Michael Andretti
00:20:06leads and Emerson Fittipaldi is second just to follow up on what a flat spot is if Paul Tracy
00:20:12locked up those brakes he locks the wheel in one position and roped up the ground broke the flat
00:20:17spot on the tire and you get a bad vibration Paul Tracy rejoins the fight in eighth place
00:20:25it's John Andretti that is just in front of him and then that battle that is Cheever Rayhall and
00:20:29Goodyear sits about a hundred yards ahead on the course Paul Tracy now has to make up time as best
00:20:35he can as he sweeps down through the corkscrew at the top of the order Michael Andretti is still
00:20:40very much in command here but Emerson Fittipaldi has been the fastest car on the course thus far
00:20:46assessing 300 with Michael Andretti being chased by Emerson Fittipaldi and you can see the intervals
00:20:51there down behind the leader Michael Andretti Fittipaldi 63 hundredths of a second back 17 laps
00:20:58of the 84 lap scheduled distance complete Paul Tracy in and out very early on thinking that he
00:21:04had a tire problem but one they have not yet been able to identify nevertheless they changed the
00:21:09tires on the car that let this man Emerson Fittipaldi move up into second place behind
00:21:13Michael Andretti and both of them have been working their way through traffic the last several laps
00:21:18and traffic definitely plays a part and is playing a part right now Emerson in fact
00:21:23is a lot further back from Michael than he was earlier because he got caught behind
00:21:27Allenser Jr. on the run uphill to the corkscrew Al Jr. not having a good day because the leaders
00:21:33easily blew him off and Bobby Rayhall sits just behind Scott Goodyear you'll get a glimpse of
00:21:39him here in just a moment and Rayhall in that position if he can move to fourth then the
00:21:44championship would be his at the end of the day he needs only the fourth place as we have
00:21:49mentioned at starting this car Emerson Fittipaldi number five has been turning laps above 108 miles
00:21:56an hour the fastest car on the circuit by far he has the fastest lap of the day at 108.5 and the
00:22:02average speed of the leader Michael Andretti has been 106.8 that's three miles an hour faster than
00:22:09last year's track record and Emerson chasing Michael trying to make a pass for the lead we've
00:22:15seen that earlier this year we've seen how difficult it is to make the pass and the more this goes off
00:22:20the more the onus of the race outcome falls to the pit lane to the crews because very often we've
00:22:25said in the past the pit lane and the crew how well they work can actually help or hinder whether
00:22:31you make the pass or not so Michael Andretti runs at the front of this field the last race of the
00:22:37season concludes IndyCar racing for Michael as he moves on to Formula One for 93. Gary
00:22:43Gerald discusses the sentiment that goes along with Michael's last race. It's a strange strange
00:22:51feeling you know it's a mixed feeling I love IndyCar racing I love the people in it and
00:22:58I've loved driving for Carl Haas and driving with my dad as a teammate and it's all going to come
00:23:04to an end and we're going to start something new and hopefully it's going to be a positive
00:23:09step for me but in the end I'm going to miss everybody. What is driving with your dad
00:23:15meant to your driving career? I think it's something that happened that will never ever
00:23:25be able to be duplicated again in my life I think it's something we'll always look back on and
00:23:31cherish these last four years as being father and son team.
00:23:37To Michael Andretti and by the way everyone here is wishing Michael well as a matter of fact there
00:23:43a number of people wearing giant buttons that say good luck in Formula One Michael you've seen the
00:23:48signs all around the edge of the track while they're going to miss him they're very excited
00:23:52that he has this opportunity look at Bobby Rahal as he ducks inside of Willie T. Ribs and continues
00:23:58his battle with Ribs teammate Scott Bunyer and Michael's official season in Formula One will
00:24:03start next month in November and a test at Silverstone and I told him this morning I'd
00:24:08like to like to talk to him afterward to see how his neck is because Silverstone is such a fast
00:24:13racetrack. Michael was very physically fit two years ago he was in a full exercise program
00:24:20and then he backed off a little bit not to say that he doesn't look fit today but he's not quite
00:24:24as muscular around the neck and shoulders and he may need that again when he gets to F1. He won't
00:24:30like you saying that. But he can do it. Did he buy you dinner last night? What I said is that he knew
00:24:35how to do it. Now Michael I think went home very early last night to prepare for today Rahal looks
00:24:41to be fighting the car. Oh this is a great battle again and again the corkscrew is where they close
00:24:46up but now look at Goodyear he has to cope with traffic here this is our favorite turn 11 spot
00:24:52Goodyear shoots down the inside
00:24:56very carefully they move down the inside as well and have to move around the slower traffic just
00:25:01behind them but both stay in contact as they climb the hill across the start finish line and
00:25:06alongside the pit. Oh look at this this is getting dicey here now remember Goodyear's position is the
00:25:11safety comfort zone for Rahal if he can get that position he will win the championship irrespective
00:25:18of what anybody else does. Now look ahead out of this camera the car in front on the right there
00:25:24Scott Goodyear because the report we've got a car into the wall that looks to be Scott
00:25:28no that looks Brian Till. Brian Till has caught the barrier up at the top of the hill coming
00:25:35as you begin to climb up toward the corkscrew but the report what I was going to say is that
00:25:39Scott Goodyear the corner workers are reporting a possible fire at the back of his car. Remember
00:25:44told you earlier he had a similar problem in the warm-up this morning
00:25:53and we're looking for Goodyear now and you see he is behind Rahal so while the situation with Till
00:25:59occurred Rahal was able to get around him but it may not have mattered because we do anticipate a
00:26:05black flag to Scott Goodyear to tell him to come into the pits and that's exactly what he's doing
00:26:10right now to take a look at the back of that car so let's watch as he comes to a stop and see if
00:26:15we can see what the officials were looking at you see one of the IndyCar officials jumping down
00:26:19right there and there is Billy Kamphaus and another IndyCar official as they swarm at the
00:26:23back of the car fire extinguishers in hand to make sure that this is not a serious problem
00:26:28this of course is exactly what Bobby Rahal needed though Rahal did get past him on the course it was
00:26:33because Scott Goodyear was already slowing down and now the crowd changes hands Bobby Rahal
00:26:39is in the position to leave this day as the champion difficult situation for Goodyear remember
00:26:45Jan Vickas told us earlier about that huge blow up in the morning warm-up that was only a couple
00:26:49of hours ago and that unfortunately has probably been some of the root cause of his being possibly
00:26:56out of this race so hard to change something as complex as a IndyCar racing engine without
00:27:02getting everything aligned properly all the hoses connected and do it in a hurry it's a very complex
00:27:09and of course we don't know at this stage whether something fell off something got loose or else they
00:27:12had another engine problem so Bobby Rahal is now exactly where he wants to be fourth place
00:27:19that is the position from which he can grasp the championship
00:27:25where the yellow flag has just been posted for the entire course the ppg pace cars will come out
00:27:32but if the race series points were to be awarded now you saw it Bobby Rahal has the point
00:27:37and we've got a stop by Michael Gary Gerald is there we watch with the crew over the wall
00:27:42the full course yellow caught these folks by surprise there are a couple of laps earlier
00:27:46than we expected we see no changes on the configuration at the front wing for Michael
00:27:50Andretti everything routine with new tires and fuel and he's gone 13.2 seconds and Michael
00:27:57Andretti is away Emerson Fittipaldi takes a little longer almost 16 seconds 15.8 and here
00:28:03is Bobby Rahal Jan Vickas Bobby Rahal puts it right down on the marks the crew has been awaiting
00:28:08this they have made tire pressure changes Paul that means that Rahal has radioed in with a
00:28:13handling problem they let some air out of the rear tires they're waiting for the last bit of fuel
00:28:18there's lots of commotion down here Rahal very smooth underway Paul Mario Andretti came out of
00:28:24the pits and right in front of him Paul Tracy roared out as well so everybody at the top of
00:28:30the order has made their first stop of the day Paul Tracy has made two but despite that Tracy
00:28:35came out of the pits at least in fourth place well talk about harem scarum time it can happen
00:28:40anywhere going into the pits are coming out Emerson almost got the rear wheels watch this under
00:28:46under acceleration that's Mario Andretti behind him Emerson drops the clutch gets it sideways
00:28:52then look at the rear wheel of Rahal's car just gets away with it and comes out in front of Mario
00:28:57look at Mario shake his fist at Emerson harem scarum time again Paul Tracy as he comes out there
00:29:04shifts up through the gears the back end wiggles and now they join the line underneath the full
00:29:10course yellow flag with the PPG pace cars the base car by the way driven by Johnny Rutherford
00:29:15three-time Indianapolis champion and former IndyCar champion driving that car the drivers
00:29:20appreciate having someone like that behind the wheel especially on a complex course like this
00:29:25now what about Scott Goodyear's day and his problem let's go to Jan Vickas
00:29:29well Paul Scott Goodyear has been here on pit road Scott what puts you out well it looks like
00:29:34with that motor change after we lost the motor this morning we ended up having a head airbrake
00:29:38we didn't get a chance to run the motor in at all but the guys in the team did a great job
00:29:41changing motors so quickly we're out of the hunt next year you're back with this team you are
00:29:46getting ready to make that announcement staying with Derek Walker will you be able to continue
00:29:50you've run so great for a low budget team well I think that we've proven that we have the will
00:29:55to win which is very important and led by Derek Walker and his group group of guys I think we're
00:29:59going to come back and be stronger next year thank you Scott Paul if he comes back and is
00:30:04stronger next year look out because he's one of the rising stars this is the corkscrew it is in
00:30:11fact here oh and we've got a problem in the pits of Scott Brayton he heard a squeal of brakes
00:30:15it sounded like he got around the on-board camera shows him there as he tries to get moved they have
00:30:20to get some tires out of the way and a huge amount of time lost here he lost it under braking it
00:30:26seems on the way into his pit Jan Vickas well Paul when I was just finishing with Scott Goodyear you
00:30:32also heard the screeches what happened was Scott Brayton came in got mixed up with Hiro Mashusta
00:30:37and got the thing turned completely backwards it looks as though the car will be okay they've lost
00:30:42a lot of time however remember it's full course caution right now Scott Brayton if he can beat
00:30:46the pace car out won't have lost too much time but boy it was harem scarum to use Derek's phrase
00:30:51here a minute ago Paul I'll tell you what it shows how common collected you can be on Vickas because
00:30:56despite hearing it I just assumed somebody was locking the brakes on his top he didn't even
00:31:01break stride Scott Brayton is back into the fight now we were saying that this is the corkscrew and
00:31:06it in fact is the signature turn here at Laguna Seca raceway with its tremendous elevation change
00:31:12Gary Gerald earlier took a look at this world-renowned set of turns
00:31:25there are three critical factors that a driver has to be aware of and conquer every time he
00:31:30challenges the corkscrew on every lap here at Laguna Seca the first of them relates to
00:31:35the blind entry here at the top of the hill keep in mind that the cockpit is only 16 inches off
00:31:40the asphalt as he makes that initial turn to the left the outside or the right front wheel wants
00:31:45to lift in the air and for a split second the driver can't really see the line that he wants
00:31:50to pursue and then he has to apply the power at the precise moment so he doesn't get excess
00:31:55wheel spin at the rear as the car lands and settles into place second thing he has to be
00:32:00concerned about is this curbing right here run a wheel up against the curbing you disturb the
00:32:05balance of the race car not only you lose time but you run the risk of losing control third thing
00:32:11the driver has to be concerned with is this dramatic change in elevation from the top of
00:32:16the hill at the corkscrew entry to the bottom at turn 11 is a fall of 160 feet that's the equivalent
00:32:23of a 16-story building driver will negotiate this series of curves in just under three seconds
00:32:30watch how quickly this ball picks up speed now as it slides down through the turns of the
00:32:35corkscrew some drivers admit that they love the challenge of this twisty corkscrew others say
00:32:42they loathe it but love it or loathe it there's no question the challenge of the corkscrew is unlike
00:32:48any other road course anywhere in the world and as a matter of fact uh in today's terms
00:32:53if they were to build that track today they wouldn't build the corkscrew would they
00:32:56all right we're watching scott brayton this was as he came in to the pit area
00:33:04under this full course caution just a moment ago and this is what happened to him
00:33:11you heard him accelerate and then when he got on the brakes he locked up the rear brakes and
00:33:16immediately the car does a 180 here it is again now he's following traffic in remember this is
00:33:22still part of the racetrack in a way so you gotta not you don't want to lose too much time
00:33:27locks the brakes right here that's it it's all lost does a 180 look how much he missed the crew
00:33:34man on much used to his car and as a matter of fact since that is a team car that crew was able
00:33:40in fact to come around and give him some help so now we continue under full course caution for
00:33:45brian till's accident we'll be back for the green something to drink sir uh yeah make it up
00:33:52right now it's a little bit of a cat and mouse game see what the other guys are doing and try
00:33:55to figure out your best plan now you keep a close eye on paul tracy did that early stop at all hurt
00:34:01him i don't think so at all you know they're bunched right back up now he's only one position
00:34:06off of where he was right behind emerson the team did a tremendous job getting him out ahead of
00:34:10mario so we're in good shape and i assume that we'll see you back in the race car in 1993 absolutely
00:34:16all right thanks rick thank you paul rick mears the 1989 winner here at laguna seca which was his
00:34:21last road course win of the indy cars i think the key word in rick's interview there was race
00:34:27unfold or the key two words michael can create the pace and create what happens ray home with
00:34:33the cushion that he has and wait a little bit for the race to unfold if he can't force a way past
00:34:38mario he's gotta wait to see what happens we talked to about possible team play here as we
00:34:45get a glimpse there behind paul tracy of mario andretti climbing the hill with the terrain
00:34:50changes and everything here how good is the two-way radio communication can mario be very
00:34:55aware of where he is and where everyone else is very aware all times radio communication is at
00:35:02such a state of the art right now you can talk freely easily understandably backwards and
00:35:08forwards driver to crew chief crew chief to driver and also as a backup system he'll have
00:35:13all the information he needs on his pit board john andretti in sixth place after getting by eddie
00:35:18cheever on that restart and you can see ray hall just in front of him cheever just behind young
00:35:22beacons has an update on john that's right paul we checked in with team owner jim hall and said
00:35:27during that pit stop they made those tire pressure changes we have found that that is what most of
00:35:32the teams are doing here at this track because the cars are getting loose just like derrick
00:35:36daley predicted in fact the rear tires are overheating and they are letting pressure out of
00:35:42the rear tires to try and get grip back maybe that's what gave him the advantage getting by
00:35:46cheever in fact when you look backwards from time to time you can see the glint of the bright sun
00:35:51here today on the suspension and that's causing some tire problems jan beacons if you are still
00:35:56with us is there any news on the status of john andretti's ride for next year could he possibly
00:36:01stay with hall dds well paul that's what the speculation is that he might stay i would say
00:36:06three or four races ago the word here on the street was he was gone for sure but he has had
00:36:11very strong performances and they may decide to reevaluate everything at the end of the season
00:36:17and in jim hall's words they're reevaluating the entire team from top to bottom and who knows what
00:36:22we'll see next year well i hope jim hall is watching john now because he is trying to do battle
00:36:27with one of the winningest guys in the series bobby rayall who is definitely in the points fight
00:36:32and john andretti is trying to find a way to get past him now ray hall really doesn't want to give
00:36:37this position up oh this is it now ray hall doesn't need a fight coming from behind him but i'm sure
00:36:42oh emerson's slowing down emerson's in trouble big trouble emerson fittipaldi was running in second
00:36:48place climbing the hill on the pit straight he suddenly began to slow he moves to the side and
00:36:54begins to fall down through the order and of course what that means is there goes ray hall
00:37:00and he moves up in the order and the key word again let the race unfold that's what's happening
00:37:06here emerson has now made it one position easier for ray hall because ray hall is now back in that
00:37:12necessary fourth place and what could be wrong with fittipaldi he's just made his stop he's just
00:37:17taken on fuel and tires has to be something more serious than just the ordinary running very slowly
00:37:22so the engine office still works maybe transmission problems i'd say it probably is transmission
00:37:28when you're trying to make your way slowly back to the pit lane scott pruitt in the pits
00:37:32the true sports car this is the last ride this year indication is that he was involved in contact
00:37:39with eric bachelor on the circuit they're trying to get that right front off there they get it
00:37:45it was contact we're looking closely to see can we see any damage but we can't see any on scott
00:37:50pruitt's car so michael andretti continues his lead in the kota lux processing 300 here's the
00:37:57interval back from michael andretti the leader of the race the key element here of course though
00:38:02is that bobby ray hall is running in fourth which is where he needs to be but he is still straddled
00:38:07by mario andretti and john andretti in fact andretti's are running first third and fifth
00:38:12in this track and all of these guys have something to prove ray hall would love to get past mario
00:38:18and be a little more solid in his positioning this gentleman emerson fittipaldi has fairly
00:38:24serious problems gary gerald well paul the man who's won four this year and was in the
00:38:28championship up through nazareth finds himself now with a throttle linkage problem at first
00:38:33they thought it was electronics they changed the electronics then they identified the throttle
00:38:37linkage problem what they're trying to do is wire the throttle open it can function
00:38:41if they can get that done so emerson patiently waits if indeed you can be patient in this
00:38:46situation let's go to yan beacons well gary we are now looking at the nose piece of scott
00:38:52pruitt's car that they came in and changed keep in mind this is the last running of this car under
00:38:57the true sports banner this car will be used next year by bobby ray hall let's just take a quick
00:39:02second and tell you what bobby ray hall did as team owner first of all he's moving his whole team
00:39:06he's bought the true sports organization what he has done he first of all offered all those people
00:39:12who work in indianapolis jobs in columbus ohio then what he did all those that wanted to stay
00:39:17he took all the true sports mechanics and is actually going to be giving them two-thirds of
00:39:22them jobs on the circuit so although this whole team what they did this year was take their last
00:39:26team photo two-thirds of them are still going to have work with the car that they love very much
00:39:31huh and yan what about the damage to the car though were they able to get it corrected and
00:39:35get scott back into the fight yes in fact most of the damage was limited here to the nose section
00:39:40we were looking at there may be a little bit of a misadjustment in the suspension but he should
00:39:45still be able to run pretty well hopefully to collect a few points bobby ray hall car 12th
00:39:50fourth place exactly where he needs to be it's got to be driving his owner carl hogan crazy
00:39:54he's done a lot of racing here carl is so animated so fun to watch at the tracks carl's first test
00:40:00session here was in the early 80s when he brought a can-am team here and you know we're in a military
00:40:05zone here ford ord army center is right next door to us they often have training sessions
00:40:11while carl sat in the pit lane waiting for his can-am car to come around turn 11 one time
00:40:15and all of a sudden tanks came up over the top of the hill which really surprised
00:40:20of course they do a lot of military maneuvers here at fort ord the home of the
00:40:24seventh infantry light here after 35 laps the valvoline race summary michael andretti
00:40:31dominating but that's exactly what he needs to do what he should do the average speed of the race
00:40:36with that full course yellow fell below the race record of 103.6 miles an hour and of course we had
00:40:41that one full course caution because of the accident involving car 24 and brian till tarryl
00:40:46pomroth is out scott goodyear you heard the report willie t ribs his teammate is out as well and we
00:40:53are still waiting for a full update but we believe it to be good that brian till is okay as soon as
00:40:57we get the official word from the indycar communications department we'll let you know
00:41:01that as well emerson fittipaldi is back on the track he talked about wiring the throttle open
00:41:06it more wiring the throttle so it'll work it's certainly not a full open throttle oh no no it
00:41:11would be impossible to drive these cars if you did not have to throttle retard fully whenever
00:41:17you take your foot off the situation so it obviously wasn't transmission however it was
00:41:20a mechanical failure in that throttle linkage system we give you now the full field rundown
00:41:27and emerson fittipaldi comes back into the fight well down in the order in 24th place gary gerald
00:41:35on the throttle on emerson's car you have an update paul i think it's a case of clarification
00:41:40i'm glad you pointed out we didn't mean to allude that it would be throttled wide open
00:41:43they keep they wire one of the butterflies open as we understand it and that helps get that whole
00:41:48process going but then you wonder how effectively will the engine be able to run with that butterfly
00:41:54open that's what emerson is now finding out well he's learning a great deal right now and by the
00:42:00way the report from indycar communications brian till was taken to the indycar medical coach here
00:42:06on the track for observation but the first report is that he is all right so michael continues to
00:42:13control the event here he's very very good under pressure not prone to making mistakes at all
00:42:19when he leads races so now it's up to tracy to try and claw his way back up to him
00:42:24however at the moment he's a long way behind over three seconds michael andretti doing everything
00:42:30that's necessary for him to find a championship at the moment it's not good enough despite the
00:42:35fact that he leads the race by a full three seconds number one in tires
00:42:41and now at the halfway point in the kota lux processing 300 we look at the interval leader
00:42:49board michael andretti has remained about three and a half three point six seconds ahead of paul
00:42:54tracy for the past several laps there is no contest currently at the front despite the fact
00:42:59that mario andretti and bobby rayhall are running that close together it seems that bobby seems
00:43:04content with fourth place which is the position he needs to leave this race with the champion's crown
00:43:09now let's take a look at what happened just a few seconds ago keep an eye on 47 brian till
00:43:16jimmy vassar tries to slide down the inside of christian danner under braking and watch what
00:43:23happens again he locks the rear brakes right here rear brakes lock up gets it sideways now it's lost
00:43:28look at danner he almost collects danner on the way but then jimmy vassar backs it off the curve
00:43:36and that's why the record truck had to go out there thinking about the accident to brian till
00:43:41it is of course jimmy vassar who by the way has tremendous success on this course and is very
00:43:46well known out here in california for all of his racing exploits again they're looking for a good
00:43:52season again next year at hayhoe pool racing and they may may just get engines and chassis
00:43:58from some of the front runners and they're looking for a possibility of some forward power they did
00:44:04get jimmy vassar push started and back onto the track without incident rick cole one of the
00:44:09co-owners of course famous for the rick cole car auctioned is one of the owners here he said yes
00:44:14there are big plans and exciting plans for this team next year and jimmy vassar as a driver is
00:44:20held in very high regard by a lot of people and i believe he has been supported so far
00:44:25i think by rick gallison a little bit exactly and by the way since you mentioned rick cole
00:44:31at the palm springs vintage car race in november a bunch of us are going to go out and roast roger
00:44:37penske there and of course all the money goes for the corvette museum it's going to be a great day
00:44:42it's nice when you can get roger and he can't respond for about 20 minutes
00:44:47so bobby ray hall runs in fourth place the position that he needs to capture the championship
00:44:54we asked him as the points leader how much confidence he has coming here to laguna seca
00:45:00having i guess 12 points is uh that's a big plus i mean it's a it takes a lot of the pressure off
00:45:07on us we don't have to win i think we had to win in nazareth uh but here i mean fourth i mean you
00:45:14got to drive pretty hard to finish fourth in one of these things so it's not uh it's not as though
00:45:18i can go out and just cruise around and you know wait for everybody to fall out or uh expect
00:45:23everybody to fall out i don't you know i think we're gonna have to go out we're gonna have to
00:45:26pass people and get to the front and uh you know starting six is a little bit of a disappointment
00:45:31but i think the car is better than it's showing and uh you know so uh you know given a good start
00:45:37i think we can do that michael andretti by the way just clinched the point the single point given
00:45:43for leading the most laps in the race as we went over the 43rd lap we're now working lap 45 let's
00:45:50go to bobby ray hall's pit now and an update from jan bikas well paul we talk a lot about
00:45:55driver emotions think about pit crew emotions when you're a driver when you're sitting on the
00:45:59grid you're getting more and more nervous and then when the green flag waves what happens paul
00:46:04is then the nervousness goes you're working so hard you don't have a chance to be nervous
00:46:08these guys here you can see how they're getting into this race what's happening of course what
00:46:12we saw was that ray hall got by mario you could see the reaction while we were talking
00:46:17what i'm getting at paul is that their emotions go up and down and up and down they get more and
00:46:21more nervous as the pit stops approach then after they do it they take a big sigh of relief
00:46:26then they know their job is done but now the tension is building towards the end let's go
00:46:30to gary gerald another update on emerson fittabaldi on he had to make another appearance in the pits
00:46:35it was one of a series of butterflies it was wired open that leads to problems with a pop-off or the
00:46:40control of the boost they also had a loose wire on the engine control module part of the electronics
00:46:45they got that all clarified tightened up he's back on the circuit trying to soldier it out once again
00:46:51emerson fittabaldi running 23rd once again but bobby ray hall if his job was to take it easy and not
00:46:58take chances he just violated that role well he had a potential headache situation behind him
00:47:04because john andre was running so well and so strong and was threatening a move on ray hall so
00:47:10he was anxious to claw his way past mario and he did it in the safest place on the track down the
00:47:16front straight past the pits where all his crew members can see him clearly so bobby ray hall
00:47:22decided mario and ready why don't you let your your cousin and your nephew in this case worry
00:47:29you for a little bit i want to get out of this battle you saw carl hogan there the partner with
00:47:33bobby ray hall in this team new this year here they were as they climbed up across the start
00:47:38finish line and what happened was coming out of turn 11 that's where ray hall set mario up he got
00:47:44on the power underneath him and was able to draw alongside as he went under the starter stand and
00:47:50then of course look at mario here look he has a little poke down the inside and ray hall closes
00:47:55the door so bobby ray hall moves forward and here it is from his onboard camera as they come off the
00:48:02last corner and onto the pit straight okay ray oh mario gets held up by traffic that's what it is
00:48:08and ray hall gets on the power earlier and now the pass is already made it's already over here
00:48:13mario slide down the inside oh look at this eric bachelor's car well they'll need one of those my
00:48:19jack cranes to get that car out of there now because it doesn't have that front suspension
00:48:24eric the former indy lights champion climbs out of the my jack car you can see that there is
00:48:29severe damage as he's brushed a wall somewhere in this section of the track with the right front
00:48:33fortunately he did climb out without injury and might have been contact with this machine
00:48:39that's tony teach him tony de tomaso who is driving in his first indycar race and he is down
00:48:44through the corkscrew trying to limp his way back to the pits that tire could do some fairly serious
00:48:49damage to that car if it flails any more than it already is you gotta drive very very slowly back
00:48:54to the pit lane because loose rubber like that can destroy the bodywork and the suspension of
00:49:00our friend tony's car here tony came from italy to pick up an indycar career try and get it off
00:49:05the ground and i think they'll probably just fix that uh left rear and send him out again
00:49:12so as tony tomaso heads for the pits michael andretti continues to circle here
00:49:17at better than 107 miles an hour it's an all-day affair for racers and spectators alike you get
00:49:26here nice and early get the barbecue growing yeah boy you're gonna have a great day here
00:49:31lots of good food plenty of california sunshine and right now a spectacular race well here is
00:49:37where the points leaders the men in the fight are running right now bobby ray hall and third michael
00:49:42andretti leads the field allen's or junior after getting restarted still sits down in 11th place
00:49:47and the points as they stand now well if the world series points were to be awarded at this moment
00:49:52bobby ray hall would take the championship he's in exactly the position that he needs
00:49:56michael andretti is doing everything he can but the situation really is more in the hands
00:50:01of bobby ray hall to make an error than it is for michael andretti to do anything more than he
00:50:06already is michael said he needs a dream weekend but he also needs help because he needed ray hall
00:50:12to be fourth or worse well he's having his dream weekend so far as long as paul tracy does not
00:50:18begin to give him the headache but paul tracy is of course beginning now to catch the leader of the
00:50:24race tracy runs in second place the 18 car danny sullivan he runs in seventh place best indication
00:50:32is he will remain with gallus racing for next year difficult weekend for sullivan missed most
00:50:37of the first session when he had a major engine blow up sullivan was actually recently offered
00:50:42a part in a new tv movie so he may get a chance to continue his acting career if he if he should
00:50:48decide to take it or do it danny and sullivan does enjoy attempts at acting he's been in a
00:50:55couple television series already back at the front of the field with michael andretti
00:51:00as he works his way through traffic and waves thank you that sweeps down the hill out of the
00:51:04court screw to the final two turns on the course and bozel we saw him try to get under sullivan
00:51:11in the braking zone did not actually make that pass but it's interesting we did see michael
00:51:16thank you to scott goodyear in a flash he's able to take his hands off the wheel wave thank you
00:51:22for the courteous move approval moving over and then get on with his job again he moved past the
00:51:27tent machine recently repaired scott pruitt putting him back into the fight mccall tracy continues to
00:51:34work at the back of michael andretti and looking for an opening that he can to try and get any
00:51:41position that he might move past here's that pass moments ago between bozel and sullivan
00:51:45every braking area turn one bozel tries to sneak down the inside look at this look what happens
00:51:50bozel actually makes the move and then sullivan chops back to the inside it's hard to slow down
00:51:58when you get inside somebody because remember you're off line and although you get the path
00:52:02to make the pass made i can almost say it you actually have to exit the corner at the same
00:52:06time which is how sullivan took it back one of the things that this track at laguna seconds
00:52:11here's for throughout the year is the russell school of driving where they put you in their
00:52:16formula four into their own russell cars and that's by the way one of the things that they
00:52:20teach in that first turn doesn't do any good to pass it in the first part of the turn because
00:52:24he's going to get your back and we've got a car into the barrier once again only day tomaso our
00:52:28friend this is the second incident we've seen him involved in he was obviously able to get back on
00:52:34the racetrack but dennis vitolo living life on the edge here looks as if he was also involved
00:52:39in that incident with tony de tomaso so two cars in trouble at lap 53 84 laps the scheduled distance
00:52:47will the officials decide that now it is time to bring out the second full course caution of the
00:52:51day we'll keep our eye on nick manoro and the flag stand let's go pit side yan beacons well
00:52:56paul what you're looking at right now is the orange hat of jim prescott that is how bobby
00:53:02rayhall knows where to stop if in fact we do have a full course yellow he will be the first person
00:53:07to jump out there that's where bobby rayhall knows to stop his team leader runs out there he always
00:53:12looks for that orange hat and if you if you look backwards you got a glimpse of it for a moment on
00:53:17carl hogan's head there it is again look at those headsets all the electronics in there they're
00:53:22trying a wonderful new gadget of noise canceling they feed noise back into the headset that's
00:53:29happening around them it cancels out the noise already there i've had that headset on and it's
00:53:34amazing here is bobby rayhall's team getting ready as a full course yellow comes out and carl hogan
00:53:39directs his team get those guys back out of the way we're ready to go into the pits michael andretti
00:53:44makes his turn down into the pit so michael andretti stops the very first pit position
00:53:48in front of him paul tracy comes in as well and here's the hair of scare of time can the crew
00:53:53of michael keep him in the lead and what can pence's crew do michael andretti on lap 53 they're
00:54:00taking time with a stop they want to get it perfectly correct there comes the fuel connector
00:54:04out the team pushes him away 15.8 seconds he gets out ahead of paul tracy maintains his position as
00:54:10they come up the hill across the start finish line and back into the fight but remember it is under
00:54:15a full course caution because they have two cars that need help at the edge of the race course
00:54:20and here comes bobby rayhall in yanvegas oh this is a final pit stop in 1992 for rayhall
00:54:26hogan racing it all comes down to this this could be the championship they made a deal with pesky
00:54:31racing and emerson for the following to make sure he wasn't here he's got a clear shot to get out of
00:54:35here it's all down to the fuel oh look at her three cars up hill wow this is incredible paul
00:54:43danny sunniman right there and ready right there and here comes bobby rayhall roaring out he did
00:54:50not get into the side of anybody and that's some pretty skillful driving on everybody's part and
00:54:55if you are faint of heart do not get involved in even watching live what happens here sometimes
00:55:00but john and ready is in trouble here john andretti as they bring him back to the pits i
00:55:05don't know if this is an overshoot and they brought him back or if he stalled pulling away
00:55:09here is the situation this was as ray hall was coming out watch john and ready the number eight
00:55:14pence oil car down at the bottom here comes ray hall mario just squeezes by sullivan gives him a
00:55:21bit of room and bozel slips in behind both of them and as he does that apparently john had to chop
00:55:26the brakes killed the engine and they had to pull him back in another view same situation there's
00:55:31raya squeezes out sullivan sees him and now look at john has to jump on the brakes unfortunately
00:55:37that may have cost john um a position a lot of positions that he was trying to give ray hall
00:55:43the road he needed it in fact drops him down to ninth in the order let's go to jan beacus well
00:55:47paul is going to give you an audio update on what happened to john and ready but you're so quick you
00:55:52saw it there that's what he did he killed it and got it refired hopefully he'll stay on that lead
00:55:55lap right now john and ready and stephan johansson round out the top 10 and that is the end of the
00:56:02leader lap michael andretti is the leader of the race ahead of paul tracy under a full course caution
00:56:08as an engine builder i recommend for the goodest sake of california the final race of the indycar
00:56:15season you just saw the order we are under a full course caution while they clean the race course
00:56:21and during this yellow we had a flurry of pit stops and this was the end of one of them
00:56:28and mario just escapes ray hall almost touches sullivan but as bozel shot into his pit lane
00:56:35for john andretti was um and was forced to get on the brakes and kill the engine here it is and we
00:56:41oh whoa see him fly by and now there's a lot happening to his inside his left side at the
00:56:46same time yeah don't look down into your rearview mirrors bobby you won't appreciate what you see
00:56:51behind you now look at the way that they have lined up behind the pace car with emerson fit
00:56:57the car immediately behind the pace car but he is running in 21st position he has four laps off of
00:57:05the leader's pace so he could become a factor in this restop in this restart as well as in the race
00:57:11itself as they sweep for the final turn keep an eye on fittipaldi and paul tracy they could work
00:57:17together michael andretti is between them michael andretti has to look for racing room as the green
00:57:21flag comes out well emerson now is going to make things difficult for michael tracy knows that
00:57:26hopes he gets a better help here but oh look at michael moves down to the inside to block that
00:57:32braking zone it'll be interesting too to watch fittipaldi because in the early laps of the race
00:57:37he was the fastest car on the course but as we know he is suffering with throttle linkage problems
00:57:43the butterflies wired full open in some cases and so he should not be nearly as fast and the
00:57:49leaders should be on top of him once again very quickly and then trying to get past him and
00:57:53christian danner is another back marker who is involved in this leading group and he actually
00:57:57moved aside allowed ray hall to go through so now ray hall has a clear run at mario so the order as
00:58:04they came back to the green flag remains unchanged michael andretti leaves the race paul tracy is
00:58:09second mario andretti third and there's the 12 car bobby ray hall he is in fourth place eddie cheever
00:58:16but the key is this man bobby ray hall he's in the position that he needs to be
00:58:20if he is to finish this day with a championship crown and paul tracy has been one of the stars
00:58:27in the revelations of this season he only has this opportunity left to take away a win which
00:58:33will be a tremendous feat so he doesn't really care what's going on in this championship fight
00:58:38he wants to just look after himself and try and get by michael and if he does that plays
00:58:43into ray hall's hands paul tracy of course replacing rick mears and the number four marlboro
00:58:48car started that replacement at the race of detroit his primary job with kenski racing
00:58:55though of course was as a testing driver amusing stories come out of his testing program he leave
00:59:01here in a couple of weeks time to go to nazareth and do another 500 mile test
00:59:08but he went to nazareth one time it was completely covered in snow
00:59:11they took the dryer and cleared the racetrack and he did a 500 mile test and all he could use
00:59:17as reference points was the snow he said it was the weirdest thing having no or zero reference
00:59:22points except the snow paul tracy's girlfriend she works in the pits keeping track of paul's
00:59:31progress around the circuit you see him go off and on like that is that easy to do or does that
00:59:37take some doing to be able to keep the car straight and back on the track no it's easy
00:59:40for tracy because he does it all the time he's got good practice at it but now in fairness to him
00:59:46what about a mere mortal like you i can do it a few times too tracy has been superb since
00:59:53elkhart lake we saw him off the road many times at elkhart lake but in fairness to him he really
00:59:58has been spectacular and superb since then well of course he has about the best racing
01:00:03instructor in the world in the person of rick mears who has been rather animated with him
01:00:08he's been in they've been talking about it rick will rick is not a guy who calls punches he'll
01:00:14tell you any secret he has because if he's going to race with you he wants to beat you on the
01:00:18racetrack so he's helping paul tracy as is everyone else on the team certainly roger penske look at
01:00:24the vorticity coming off the back of the wing that that's due to the high humidity here in the
01:00:29low pressure area that's created to create some condensation a contrail as it were at the back
01:00:34of the wing up here today you're looking at the differential now between ray hall and cheever
01:00:40there goes ray hall through cheever climbing up just behind him there he goes ray hall came here
01:00:45and tested left without a happy feeding with the car could not get the car to work as well as he
01:00:50wanted on the tires he and his engineer steve ewey have tried all sorts of changes this weekend and
01:00:57they believe this morning in the warm-up that they did in fact have a good handling race car however
01:01:02he's not able to run at the front on account formula one champions here at this track emerson
01:01:06fittipaldi mario andretti and of course about to become indycar driver nigel mansell is a spectator
01:01:11here today as we watch paul tracy make his move around fittipaldi let's go to gary gerald
01:01:17nigel was watching very closely as michael got clear of the traffic and is now out of the
01:01:22lead of this back nigel we welcome you to indycar racing for the american audience who's
01:01:27so excited about your arrival what was the key that made you decide to go indycar racing to give
01:01:33up formula one after a world championship well i think all the credit's got to go to paul newman
01:01:38and carl hasp and the newman has team and all the boys associated and sponsors uh they uh spoke to
01:01:45me in a very positive manner and uh and basically i think your racing is very exciting and probably
01:01:51better than ours was it a difficult decision to reach it was a decision that took a lot of uh
01:01:56commitment obviously with moving the family and having three young children but uh it's one that
01:02:01i've made i'm very happy with and uh i'll tell you the one thing i can't get over being here
01:02:05this weekend is just how cooperative uh all the officials and racers are in the pit lane it's
01:02:10marvelous the reception has been very positive for you when does the testing begin it's been
01:02:16exciting and the testing will begin in january all right we wish you well nice to see you on
01:02:21this side of the pond thank you okay thank you hi chloe leo legrick for the kids all right nigel
01:02:27mansell now a member of the indycar family paul and of course we honor him as the reigning world
01:02:33champion they got a great series going over there too i think he's going to enjoy his time in the
01:02:39indycars michael andreni continues to control this race though paul tracy is doing his best to close
01:02:47mario andreni runs almost alone and then bobby ray hall who right now has a hold of the champion's
01:02:54crown is engaged in a battle with eddie chiever here's the battle at the front of the field
01:03:01ray hall only has one arm around that trophy because chiever is in a very thrusting position
01:03:07here over the last four or five laps chiever has inched his way closer to ray hall and remember
01:03:13ray hall could get some help if tracy manages to get by michael and of course eddie chiever at the
01:03:19same time we we look here at the points if the world series points were to be awarded now but
01:03:25chiever could have a definite impact on the championship he wants to get around ray hall
01:03:30he wants that fourth place let's go to his pit and gary gerald and paul this team down here even
01:03:35though eddie chiever is making his final drive for tip ganassi is really wired into the moment
01:03:39as he relentlessly puts on the pressure he's been closing the gaps he could be the huge spoiler
01:03:45and incidentally eddie chiever under his driver's suit wearing a t-shirt today that says
01:03:50we'll race for food that says something about his 93 plans
01:03:56eddie chiever always in good humor despite the fact it is the last ride we certainly hope that
01:04:00he comes up with something for next season as well because he has been a delight throughout
01:04:05this racing season always handy with a great comment and a good interview the battle now
01:04:10between chiever and ray hall that fight is for fourth place but it is a fight that could have
01:04:14a positive or from ray hall's point of view a negative impact on the championship while at the
01:04:19same time at the front of the field michael andretti certainly has to be aware that paul
01:04:23tracy is closing in but chiever is closing on ray hall even faster and chiever is closing in
01:04:29this is the battle that we need to watch right now ray hall has slipped back a little bit it's
01:04:34not so much that chiever has suddenly gone faster ray hall has actually slipped back
01:04:39into the clutches of eddie chiever eddie chiever fell back too tense on that you can get a glimpse
01:04:47there of the damage suffered to the side of chiever's car in early contact in the race but
01:04:52not enough damage to slow him down as he continues to bother bobby ray hall back climbing the hill
01:05:00and what a difficult situation ray hall is in what a pressure situation he has to drive absolutely
01:05:05flat out mindful of who's behind him hoping that michael andre doesn't in fact succeed
01:05:11the way he does and think of what he has on the line he owns this race team
01:05:18down through the corkscrew for bobby ray hall we mentioned at the start of this race that
01:05:24nick fenaro who has been the starter for every indycar race since cart was created
01:05:30will be retiring at the end of this year back in 1948 there was nicky with his wife and his mom
01:05:37in the white house tavern in allentown nicky of course got into the midgets and the sprinters
01:05:42and he was a great champion throughout the 50s and then finally his winning days behind him
01:05:49nick fenaro recognized that it was time to give something back to the sport that had given him
01:05:54so much so he became a starter a flag man he flagged some great racing up and down the east
01:05:59coast then too great friends like mario andretti a.j watson sonny meyer his green and checkered
01:06:06flag known all of these drivers they love nicky they especially like that at every race he takes
01:06:12time to walk down the pits just before the start and shake the hands of each and every competitor
01:06:18and wish them the best and as he leaves indycar racing we wish him the best nick fenaro
01:06:29why in california i'm paul bates with derek daly and look at michael andretti losing the back in
01:06:34there as paul bracy continues his pursuit at the front of the field in the meantime bobby ray hall
01:06:40still has eddie chiever lined up behind him no move made on chiever's part in the last few laps
01:06:45this is where the fight is right now right at the front and paul tracy we can see his last lap was
01:06:51actually faster we can see that on our computer here he is faster than michael but he's got a bad
01:06:56run in traffic and that can mean so much here so michael still continues to control the race here
01:07:03as we watch our race summary michael andretti has led all the way he's done everything necessary
01:07:09as he came into this race he took the pole at the most laps whether or not he can score a
01:07:15championship depends on bobby ray hall and ray hall running in fourth is where he needs to be
01:07:19to take the championship so ray hall at this moment is not giving up anything the real factor
01:07:25will be eddie chiever sitting just behind ray hall who may try to battle in the closing laps
01:07:32there's nigel as he keeps track out from the edge of the circuit that's an illegal position he's the
01:07:38only one that will be allowed to sit out there exactly when you're the world champion do whatever
01:07:41sort of a pass do you need to sit on the wall like that one that you and i don't have and that
01:07:46i don't want that takes years of formula one to earn they climb the hill again paul tracy continues
01:07:52to close in here comes mario up the hill there's bobby ray hall and then didier tays sits between
01:08:00ray hall and eddie chiever at the moment so ray hall has some breathing room and didier tays
01:08:05will move over because he will know he's not in a fight with eddie chiever didier tays
01:08:10very few races this year backed again by kinko's but he's having a reliable run let's say today
01:08:17all pit stops are complete the run now is to the finish of the 1992 indy car season
01:08:24with a battle for the lead between michael and paul tracy
01:08:27and a battle between bobby ray hall and eddie chiever for fourth it could affect the championship
01:08:33hey paul tracy just behind him in fact in the past few seconds paul tracy has closed in just
01:08:38a little bit more that fight for the moment with bobby ray hall and eddie chiever has broken off
01:08:42though ray hall seems to be closing on mario andretti so michael's father could enter into
01:08:48this picture as well but look at paul tracy as they come through the first turn he is right
01:08:53at the back of michael andretti and paul tracy would desperately love to win this race to leave
01:09:00this season with his first indy car victory and here is the pressure cooker situation for
01:09:04michael andretti the pressure is being turned up as tracy inches closer now if tracy makes a move
01:09:10down the inside michael has to win this race so he will make it as difficult as possible
01:09:15for tracy and he will fight him tooth and nail because michael has to win or else nothing else
01:09:21matters here of course there is an engine and a chassis battle at stake here as well
01:09:26in the lead car michael andretti ford consworth power alola chassis a penske chassis with the new
01:09:32chevrolet engine the c engine just behind him and with roger penske with a great deal on the line
01:09:38in paul tracy's machine and of course the owner is doing battle again carl has the two carls carl
01:09:45hasson hogan has of course been in it for many many years carl hogan returning and having a
01:09:50spectacular and enjoyable year back as co-owner with bobby ray hall of course it's partnership
01:09:56in both cases carl has his partner paul newman is right there in the pits watching the race
01:10:00look at paul tracy smoke the light side of the car as he comes into the first turn and
01:10:06carl hogan's partner is bobby ray hall in the cockpit and that's how you get flat spots we
01:10:12mentioned that at the start of the show when you lock up those front wheels and you get a
01:10:17start in the show when you lock up those front wheels it flattens an area on the wheel if you
01:10:23do it too much you get such a bad vibration you either slow down or you go to the pit lane
01:10:29take a look at the pits sandy andretti she keeps track of michael as he moves to the closing laps
01:10:36of this race we can tell a little bit about vibration by watching the rear wing on paul
01:10:42tracy's car that might tell us whether or not he was flat spotting the tires looks fairly smooth
01:10:48right now as he climbed the hill though michael makes very few mistakes he's great in these
01:10:54pressure situations he loves leading if the car isn't good he will fight and fight and fight and
01:10:59make it difficult for tracy so and tracy knows that but if anybody else tracy is one of the
01:11:05spectacular people who will take a chance even if michael leaves the door even halfway open
01:11:11tracy will pounce so the battle at the front continues in the meantime what about bobby rayhall
01:11:16and his run for the championship jan beacons well we're standing by with carl hogan carl it's coming
01:11:21down to the end you're right where you want to be right now and fourth i'm sure you'd rather be a
01:11:24little further up now it's coming down what are your emotions well we don't care how it is as long
01:11:30as it's fourth so it doesn't matter where we like to be we just want to finish at least fourth now
01:11:35he's starting to move up on mario is the car feeling better yeah we uh you know we brought
01:11:40a conservative race with fuel and we're starting to turn the wick up a little bit and i think it's
01:11:44starting to change you know showing the times now thank you carl so bobby rayhall still in fourth
01:11:52place exactly where he wants to be if he stays there he leaves this race as the indycar champion
01:11:57for 1992 michael andretti he's done everything absolutely necessary he's led every lap here
01:12:02sat on the pole taking the point for the most laps but it's all in ray hall's hands now for
01:12:08michael andretti to win a championship bobby rayhall is going to have to make a desperate
01:12:11mistake and how things can change during the year remember back to indy michael total dominance
01:12:18anyway with zero points and at mid ohio another race total zone he tapped jimmy vassar as they
01:12:25came off the last turn onto the pit straight vassar gets going again tracy got going right away
01:12:31but that ended that battle in the front and that's just the kind of thing that could affect this
01:12:34other battle because if those cars are sitting in front of them if they roll to a stop on the
01:12:39course then all of a sudden bobby rayhall could have been there now we need to see his tracy
01:12:44damage the front of his car oh it doesn't look too bad oh he's off the road again yes he did
01:12:54he's got an understeer situation tracy his challenge to michael is now over so into the
01:13:00closing laps of this race paul tracy makes a mistake and in doing so takes the pressure off
01:13:06of michael andretti but the battle remains for the championship will bobby rayhall come home the
01:13:11victor we'll be back to watch the final moments of the indy car season for 1992 right after this
01:13:20he had some damage with jimmy vassar in turn one he finally got it to a stop on the back side of
01:13:25the course now michael this is turn 11 michael slides by tracy hopes that vassar gives him enough
01:13:33room now watch what happens here vassar turns in tracy is there breaks that front wing tracy no
01:13:38longer has the downforce he needs on the front of the car and that caused his accident cost him as
01:13:43he came up the hill and ran off the course so he will watch the end of a race that he may have won
01:13:48at the front of the field that leaves michael then mario andretti and bobby rayhall in third
01:13:55place there is no question as there was in fourth that bobby rayhall can end this race
01:14:00as the indy car champion his third indy car championship the team as they applaud each time
01:14:05he comes by still is hoping but still not sure that this race is over the season has been so
01:14:11tight this entire year and it's come down to these very final laps they come onto the pit straight
01:14:17again watch the team two laps to go you saw debbie rayhall hold up the fingers the team
01:14:22quick applause ray ball flashes past heads for the first turn in third place no one in challenge
01:14:28to ray hall now the andretti family looks like they're looking at a first and second finish
01:14:34with mario chasing his son to the flag down in the andretti pits they did everything they could
01:14:39possibly have done but it was not enough gary gerald is right there normally with a team running
01:14:45one and two it would be euphoric down here but you don't get that sense in this pit today because
01:14:50they know that the championship is about to slide through their fingers no opportunity to repeat so
01:14:55what an irony michael and mario going to go one two it looks like as we're in the final two laps
01:15:00and yet there's no jubilation the things the the anticipation you normally expect
01:15:06not here at this point in the newman hospital michael andretti comes down the hill just in
01:15:10front of him the 16 a max car stephan johansson who has wrapped up the rookie of the year honors
01:15:16and will be driving that car for the remainder of the season here car for the remainder of next
01:15:20year as well he signed on with tony bettenhausen for next year on to the pit straight one more time
01:15:26completing the lap there underneath the bridge michael andretti looking at a flag to flag win
01:15:34as the white flag comes out indicating one more lap to go but still he must be so very careful
01:15:39johansson lets him pass bobby rayhall comes past and down into the first turn in third place and
01:15:46on his way to an indycar championship to lose it now something desperate would have to happen at
01:15:52the at that particular race car dropping it well behind and that is not likely well the only part
01:15:58of michael andretti's dream weekend that didn't fall into place was a lack of performance by
01:16:03bobby rayhall otherwise michael has done everything possible and i said it earlier on remember also
01:16:10mid ohio total dominance zero points how the whole season can come down to just one race but really
01:16:16you have to look back on the full season to get the full picture of what happened in this
01:16:20championship on the last lap no one in contest with michael andretti he has passed stephan johansson
01:16:25he has clear sailing for the fifth time in his indycar career he is looking at a flag the flag
01:16:31win a clean sweep down heading now for the final corner and the pit straight and turning up
01:16:38toward nick venaro's final checkered flag michael andretti on the pit straight now a perfect day
01:16:44as he takes the win for the newman haas team in the kmart texaco haveland lola now here comes the
01:16:50new champion as bobby rayhall raises fist in salute to his pits and he takes the checkered flag
01:16:56as the champion for the indycars in 1992 his third indycar championship take your hat off
01:17:04and admire this group of people here a new team essentially a new team look at the jubilation with
01:17:10carl hogan comes back to indycar racing and he will be in tears at the success that this team
01:17:17has had this season congratulations to him and to bobby rayhall it was a team that really played
01:17:23the percentages they took a tried and true combination the older chevrolet engine and
01:17:29the lola chassis and carried it to the end of the season let's go to jan beacons carl hogan
01:17:34congratulations on the 1992 championship i don't know if i can speak i'm so happy i just can't
01:17:41believe it's happened because we worked so hard and we've achieved our goals and we've had a safe
01:17:48season and it's been wonderful paul i think those emotions speak for themselves a wonderful end of
01:17:54the season for a wonderful man a true gentleman and as we've watched him throughout the season
01:18:00we've seen he is a man who truly enjoys the racing time and time again he will say
01:18:05isn't this great and take a look that is the second closest points finish in indycar history
01:18:21and the one million dollar prize that goes along with it he is the indycar champion let's go to
01:18:26gary gerald well the handshakes the hugs the co-owners bobby rayhall and carl hogan
01:18:32the emotion wow the new champion is crowned debbie rayhall a jubilant crew and now he goes
01:18:38to work with the helmet the man who won here four consecutive years in the 80s today he knew that he
01:18:43couldn't take the big chances he had to be in the top four he managed to do the job they wanted to
01:18:49win but with michael setting that tour in pace he was able to hold off cheever and bobby rayhall
01:18:55another championship right now goes into your pocket what are the thoughts what are the emotions
01:18:59well all i can say is it must be destiny because uh you know the car was the car was good enough
01:19:05but not great today and it was just enough to be in the top three or four and you know it's just a
01:19:11testament to my crew they did a wonderful wonderful job all year long and i'll tell you in your first
01:19:15year of having your own team you win the championship uh you know i can't imagine what
01:19:21you know what could be greater how much doubt how much concern was there when eddie cheever started
01:19:26closing in and he was right behind you and you knew you had to be at least fourth or better well
01:19:32we were kind of playing it easy still on fuel and you know you weren't i mean i tried to i tried to
01:19:37catch uh i caught mario and got ahead and we lost it on the pit stop um you know but uh as i say the
01:19:45car everything ran beautifully so i can't i can't complain it's a great moment carl hogan's got a
01:19:50hat that he wants to put on bobby rayhall's head and i bet you anything it's going to say something
01:19:54about the 92 championship there it is it proudly goes on congratulations again thank you very much
01:20:02let's go to young beacons michael andretti you did absolutely everything today you put it on
01:20:06the pole yesterday you ran flawlessly but not quite enough for the championship yeah it's a
01:20:12mixed emotions for sure i guess uh the only thing that uh we can say is we did everything we could
01:20:17do and uh the guys did a great job in and out of the pits and uh and it's great to have a one two
01:20:23you know with our last time together me and dad you know what a way to end uh and you know an era
01:20:29so uh it was uh i guess bittersweet now you now are looking forward obviously i know that's not
01:20:35on your mind just yet but this was your final indie car race you're moving on to form of the
01:20:39one your thoughts on that it's a bit of a sad moment at the moment you know because it is the
01:20:45last time i'll be driving with dad and driving indie cars uh it was a bit emotional at the start
01:20:51but um you know we have to look forward and uh you know hopefully uh things will work out for us
01:20:56over there we know paul there's tears in his eyes he loves this indie car racing we'll wish him well
01:21:02in formula one paul as many fans will miss him here but we wish him victories in formula one
01:21:08three and readies in the top five michael drives a perfect race weekend takes the pole leads all
01:21:15the laps and takes the win his father comes in right behind him as we look down through the
01:21:20entire order of the final standings as the championship goes to this the very last race
01:21:26of the indy car season and what a race it was a spectacular afternoon and what does all that do
01:21:32to the points well now there is really only one number that matters it's bobby ray hall
01:21:37196 points he is the champion mario andretti finished second here today he's with gary gerald
01:21:44well mario your best finish of the year and i know a lot of emotions because now you have to say
01:21:51goodbye to a son as a fellow competitor as he heads to formula one what's going through your
01:21:56mind right now well uh at this point i think uh on the positive side i hope he goes over there
01:22:02and win some races here over there so he can let me win some here but um he had he did what he had
01:22:09to do i think he went to obviously he got maximum points for the weekend but uh it just wanted what
01:22:15was one of those things where bobby was running so well the whole year and uh he won the championship
01:22:20and i want to be one of the first ones to congratulate him i know that uh you have to
01:22:25be terribly proud thank you mario you bet paul mario andretti finishes in second place here is
01:22:30the schedule for next year starting in australia the championship fight renews all the way down to
01:22:36the last race to be held here in laguna seca california all the same venues as this year we'll
01:22:41have coverage of this race on october 22nd on checkered flag what a great day for both michael
01:22:47andretti and congratulations to the champion bobby ray hall well it takes a tremendous commitment to
01:22:51win a championship some of the unsung heroes of ray hall's team is steve newy his engineer
01:22:56and jim prescott who has been part of ray hall success for all these years michael said it's an
01:23:02end of an era i look forward to beginning of a great new era with michael in formula one it has
01:23:07been a tremendous battle this year it will be even better next year i'm paul page for
