00:01:34Well, if there is a dominant driver in the sports racer category at the moment, it's
00:01:37James Weaver.
00:01:38He leads the points.
00:01:39He's had four poles out of five, with the one included here today, and he also comes
00:01:40fresh off a victory at Lime Rock Park with his teammate, Butch Lightsinger.
00:01:41But James, in qualifying, it was an old teammate of yours who nearly pulled a surprise on you.
00:01:42I know.
00:01:43He's a bit rude of him because he keeps his kit in Dyson's truck, and Scotch Dubo asked
00:01:44him to drive his car.
00:01:45And before we know it, he's trying to grab pole from us.
00:01:46It's going to be Andy Wallace, who starts alongside James on the front row.
00:01:47No surprise to see James on the pole here today, but there was a bit of a surprise.
00:01:48It's the U.S. Road Racing Classic next on Speed Vision.
00:01:50In the GTO class, they just secured pole position by a huge eight-tenths of a second.
00:01:51Tommy, congratulations on that.
00:01:52Well, it's a bit of a surprise to see James on the front row.
00:01:53I know.

00:03:54him to drive his car.
00:03:55And before we know it, he's trying to grab pole from us.
00:03:56Well, Ron, you've got your wish.
00:03:58What are you going to do about it?
00:03:59Well, we're going to go out there and we're going to run a good, solid race and just prove
00:04:02that we're in endurance racing and consistency is the key.
00:04:04And we're going to have the car going pretty strong the whole time.
00:04:07We've got two good drivers.
00:04:08We've got a great crew, great sponsors and everything, and we're going to go out there
00:04:11and just give them hell.
00:04:12This is going to be one great battle, guys.
00:04:13I think you've got that right, John Dorsey.
00:04:14This looks like a much better fight in GTO with the arrival of the Archer McCann Viper.
00:04:15Yeah, it'll be a good fight.
00:04:16We'll start all the way to the end.
00:04:17We're going to get fucking out.
00:04:18We're going to get fucking out.
00:04:19We're going to get fucking out.
00:04:26We'll have five classes of cars on track, 41 in all.
00:04:29The green flag is coming up.
00:04:31Join us again in a moment from MidOhio.
00:04:36Grand American Road Racing from MidOhio is being brought to you by BMW, the ultimate
00:04:41driving machine, and by Informix Software, your new way to web.
00:04:48Welcome back to Central Ohio and one of America's greatest road racing facilities, MidOhio Sports
00:04:55Car Course.
00:04:56As the drivers are now being strapped into their cars, there's Elliott Forbes Robinson
00:05:00who has started one of Rob Dyson's beautiful Lincoln-powered Riley and Scott chassis.
00:05:07Now it's time for the command that will fire the engines and send us on our way.
00:05:13Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines.
00:05:16Up and down the pit lane, the engines come to life.
00:05:21It's time for a last minute tap on the top of the driver's helmet and a handshake there
00:05:26from the Dyson crew to Elliott Forbes Robinson.
00:05:29The neat things about endurance racing is the wide variety of chassis and engine combinations.
00:05:34We have 41 cars representing virtually every facet of the automotive industry as well as
00:05:40race car engineering.
00:05:41Garcia, I know you've got a lot of sleep time here at MidOhio.
00:05:45Tell us about it.
00:05:46Well, 13 corners, 2 1⁄4 miles, and it's a good mix, Bob, of a long, fast straightaway.
00:05:50Back there in the back, the afterburner and so forth, David Hobbs calls that the twisty bit.
00:05:54You better have a good handling car.
00:05:57There's also lots of elevation changes, which means some of these corners will be blind
00:06:01to the drivers, and with a field of 41 and lots of speed differentials between the different
00:06:05classes, you better be careful.
00:06:07On board with the Judd, Riley, and Scott, Jack Baldwin at the keyboard.
00:06:10Take us around, Percy.
00:06:11Well, here we are actually in the twisty bits right now.
00:06:14Take a look at all the pavement changes.
00:06:16It's very hard to set up a car.
00:06:17Here's an off-camber corner.
00:06:18Watch as we climb this little hill.
00:06:19It's a quick left-hander, flat-out.
00:06:21Car gets almost airborne right here.
00:06:23Hear the motor squeal as it goes up in the air.
00:06:27Now, this corner, big jump again.
00:06:29It'll lift the front wheels off the ground, and you're going to head up this very, very
00:06:32fast twisty bit.
00:06:34Left-hander here.
00:06:35Then you're going to get an accident.
00:06:43Carousel, they call that.
00:06:45Straight away, we're looking for checkered flag, but not the green flag.
00:06:48Now, here's a look at our Informix starting lineup.
00:06:51On the pole, James Weaver and his Ford-powered Riley, and Scott alongside his former teammate,
00:06:55Andy Wallace.
00:06:56Row two, Jack Baldwin.
00:06:58Team one at Phoenix in round two.
00:07:00Back on row number three, Mimos Kiaterella brings some Formula One experience to that
00:07:05Ferrari 333SB.
00:07:07Take a look down the rest of the starting grid.
00:07:10As I mentioned, 41 cars, Sports Racer and Sports Racer 2, the two open cockpit prototype
00:07:16classes, if you will, and then the production-based machinery, heavy metal GTO class, smaller
00:07:22displacement engines in GTU, and then the two-frame American-powered AGT, or American
00:07:28GT class.
00:07:29It's basically an SCCA Trans Am car running here in the Grand American Road Racing Series.
00:07:36Tremendous variety, as I mentioned.
00:07:39Up and down the field.
00:07:41Now, we are almost ready for the green flag, so let's get final thoughts now from our pit
00:07:45reporters, Calvin Fish and John Bisignano.
00:07:48Cal, you first.
00:07:50Fuel mileage in the Sports Racer category today may well be an issue.
00:07:53Both the number 27 Lister machine and the number 74 Informix car running the Judd-powered
00:07:58entries.
00:07:59What those cars do, they get much better fuel mileage than the Dyson Racing Fords, so they'll
00:08:03be able to make a stop under yellow if we get one between the laps 20 and 30, and then
00:08:07only have to make one more stop under green flag racing, whereas the Dyson cars, they'll
00:08:11probably stay out if we get an early caution, because it will not put them in their fuel
00:08:15window today.
00:08:16Every driver I've talked to has mentioned one thing.
00:08:18Traffic.
00:08:19A big problem here with some 40 cars on the track in 2.2 miles.
00:08:24Mostly a turny, twisty 2.2 miles.
00:08:26They all said it's going to take one thing to come home victorious and safe.
00:08:30That's patience.
00:08:33All right, thank you, gentlemen.
00:08:34On board with Jack Baldwin and the Informix Robinson Racing Judd-powered Riley and Scott,
00:08:39one of those cars that Calvin Fish mentioned.
00:08:41The biggest field we've seen in Grand American Racing since the season-opening Rolex 24 Hours
00:08:46at Daytona International Speedway.
00:08:48We'll be back to Daytona in midsummer for the revival of the Mall Revere 250 here on
00:08:53Speed Vision.
00:08:54Right now, the field is set.
00:08:56Coming around to take the green flag on the back straightaway, James Weaver to the left
00:09:00of your screen, and Andy Wallace in the blue and yellow machine to his left.
00:09:07Up the speed they come.
00:09:08The green is out.
00:09:09We're underway.
00:09:10A tight, uphill right-hander coming up.
00:09:14Look at Andy tucking behind him.
00:09:15The smart move to defend the inside because it's really getting to the twisty parts here.
00:09:19Oh!
00:09:20Just had two cars get bumped right there, as a matter of fact.
00:09:23That's one of the Interscope cars having to get out of it and back off as Jack Baldwin
00:09:28slots into third place.
00:09:29You're running behind our pole sitter, James Weaver, and his former teammate, Andy Wallace.
00:09:41Got a look at Didier Thijs in that red, white, and blue Judd-powered Ferrari chassis in the
00:09:46Doran Special, also known as the FUD.
00:09:49Started 21st after the top 20 positions on the grid were locked in at first day qualifying.
00:09:54Didier Thijs vastly experienced Belgium as that car coming forward.
00:09:59He wouldn't stay back there long without that one power.
00:10:01That Judd was great.
00:10:02He was fantastic.
00:10:03The light was great, too.
00:10:05To the front of the field as we pass under the bridge and into turn one.
00:10:11Completing lap one here at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
00:10:14Three hours of racing coming up.
00:10:17We'll take a break and return with more of the U.S. Road Racing Classic.
00:10:20Don't go away.
00:10:23Welcome back to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and the U.S. Road Racing Classic.
00:10:27Bob Farscia, Dorsey Schrader, John Bisignano, and Calvin Fish with you on a beautiful day
00:10:31in central Ohio.
00:10:33Great crowd on hand for round five of the Grand American Road Racing Series.
00:10:37No change up front.
00:10:38James Weaver leads Andy Wallace and Jack Baldwin.
00:10:43Here's the battle for fourth.
00:10:46Number 37, Ford-powered Lola from InterSport Racing for John Field.
00:10:51Qualified sixth, now running fourth, and just behind him, Elliot Forbes Robinson.
00:10:56Lincoln, Riley, and Scott for Dyson Racing.
00:10:59For John Field, very aggressive at the start of these races.
00:11:02When you look at the competition, it doesn't surprise you.
00:11:04He really drives hard.
00:11:10For John Field, this is very much a home race for him.
00:11:12He lives in Dublin, Ohio.
00:11:14Far away from the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington.
00:11:18Here's Mimos Guilletarela, qualified fifth.
00:11:20Number 12, bright red Ferrari 333 SP.
00:11:25Drop back position.
00:11:29The question, I guess, Dorsey, is whether that Ferrari...
00:11:31Whoa!
00:11:32Lightens up the left rear.
00:11:33As John Field, you said he was aggressive.
00:11:35Boy, that's not good.
00:11:36That was...
00:11:37Left rear, and that's...
00:11:38A little lucky he didn't get turned around on that.
00:11:40I think that could be a problem for him further up the road here.
00:11:43Here's that grand, spanking new Dodge Viper,
00:11:46right on the heels of the GTO Saleem Mustang
00:11:49that has dominated that class of Grand American Racing.
00:11:53It looks like here at Mid-Ohio,
00:11:55Tommy Archer and that new Viper
00:11:57may have the measure of the Ford product.
00:11:59Terry Porschella has gotten around Archer
00:12:01somewhere at the beginning of this race,
00:12:03or at least Tommy's right there behind him right now,
00:12:05and that could be something dealing with tire issues.
00:12:10Hopefully, we'll watch that battle in the GTO class all day long
00:12:13as they come down the high-speed backstretch,
00:12:15slight right-hand kink, and then hard on the brakes.
00:12:19I like these cars.
00:12:20These are real factory hot rods you're looking at.
00:12:22A lot of horsepower, not a lot of tire.
00:12:25That Mustang, by the way, the number five car,
00:12:28black and white,
00:12:29had an absolutely tortured weekend
00:12:31in the most recent round of the Grand Am at Lime Rock.
00:12:34They managed to take pole and win their class,
00:12:36but along the way, they had a sticking throttle,
00:12:39not something that you might want
00:12:40on a 1.5-mile loop like Lime Rock.
00:12:43Then the car caught fire,
00:12:44and finally, the car suffered an accident
00:12:47that completely rearranged the front end
00:12:49before Ron Johnson and teammate Terry Porschella
00:12:51were able to bring it home to victory lane.
00:12:59A V8 in the Ford.
00:13:02Of course, an even bigger V10 in the Viper.
00:13:05Seven liters, look at that.
00:13:07Of course, we all know what that Daimler Chrysler Viper product
00:13:10has been able to do in sports car racing
00:13:12in the hands of the French Orica team,
00:13:13and right now, down the inside,
00:13:14goes Tommy Archer to take over the lead in the GTO class
00:13:18from Terry Porschella
00:13:19on a track that Archer knows well.
00:13:21First race here at Mid-Ohio in 1981,
00:13:25and took pole, did Tommy.
00:13:27He knows the twists and turns of the Mid-Ohio Hills.
00:13:30I think that took Terry totally by surprise.
00:13:32Under the bridge there at turn one,
00:13:34it's not a place where you can get past,
00:13:36and he made that decision.
00:13:37He just tucked the Viper into the arch.
00:13:39As you see, 15th overall,
00:13:40but I'll make you a promise that they are going to move up.
00:13:44They won't be 15th in GTO class leaders,
00:13:46whether it's the Viper or perhaps the Mustang
00:13:49or some other member of the class
00:13:51before this one is over.
00:13:52These cars are quick.
00:13:53Look at that.
00:13:54He just stuffs it right down the inside.
00:13:55There's not hardly room for two cars right there.
00:13:57There's a curve to the inside that you have to miss,
00:13:59and that was a very gutsy move.
00:14:02It's a very good race driving for both men.
00:14:06One of the slower GTU cars,
00:14:07and, oh, he got a car stopped on the start-finish straightaway.
00:14:11John Field's car, 37th.
00:14:14He's pulled it off to the side.
00:14:17That was the Lola we saw being driven so aggressively by Field
00:14:20just a few minutes ago.
00:14:23He's in the car gesturing at officials at the trackside wall.
00:14:28He should be able to get a restart at the working traffic.
00:14:31Tommy Archer with the McCann Plastics Dodge Viper.
00:14:34Oh, there goes Field.
00:14:35He got it running.
00:14:37Yeah, the rubber broke.
00:14:38I guess he's been electrical or something.
00:14:40Oh, he's pulling back in.
00:14:42That's the pit out right there.
00:14:43He's just right.
00:14:44He knows he's slow.
00:14:45He's getting out of everybody's way.
00:14:46Now he's going to have to try to make it all the way around the track.
00:14:49Looks like he's got some pretty good speed.
00:14:51Yeah, he got out of there all right.
00:14:52I think he just moved over to make sure that he was clear of anybody behind him.
00:14:57It'll be a two-mile run to the pits if, in fact,
00:14:59John Field needs to pit that car.
00:15:01He's losing all kinds of track position.
00:15:03We go to the race leader working track on his own.
00:15:06This is James Weaver.
00:15:08Let's see if we can get a look at where Andy Wallace might be.
00:15:11Now there he is, two cars back.
00:15:12Is that Wallace?
00:15:13I can't say if that was Wallace or not.
00:15:15He's opened up quite a bit of lead there, James has, which surprised me.
00:15:18Andy, you know, they're real good friends.
00:15:24Great friends, former teammates.
00:15:27As you heard James say at the top of the show,
00:15:29Andy Wallace keeps his gear or his kit in the Dyson trailer, as you say, John Field.
00:15:33He's off again somewhere.
00:15:35Now this time he's out in the grass, so he's pulled off the racetrack.
00:15:38Maybe his day is done now.
00:15:41Tough break for the Dublin, Ohio driver.
00:15:43You can see the aerodynamic treatment.
00:15:45A radical-looking profile on that car.
00:15:49And he's not alone out there.
00:15:51Number 48 GTO Chevy Corvette.
00:15:55Well, James Moyer and David Barnard have got a yellow flag.
00:15:58Full course caution, our first of the day here at Mid-Ohio.
00:16:02So cars will pull in behind the safety car.
00:16:05All that hard work James Weaver did to get away from Andy Wallace is for naught.
00:16:11Here's a look from onboard Jack Baldwin's machine.
00:16:14We'll take a break and return with more coverage.
00:16:16Round 5, Grand Am season.
00:16:18Stay with us.
00:16:22Welcome back.
00:16:23Still early in round 5 of the Grand American Road Racing Championship.
00:16:27We are under caution.
00:16:28We've got a quick pit stop here for the Ferrari down to Calvin Fish.
00:16:32The number 12 Risi Competizione Ferrari comes into his pit stall.
00:16:36Mimmo Schiadarella behind the wheel.
00:16:38They're taking advantage of this yellow flag to just do a quick splash of fuel.
00:16:41He's going to be peeling out of here momentarily.
00:16:43No tire change.
00:16:44They're just topping up.
00:16:45Surprised that they're really giving up the track position.
00:16:47We expected the Duran car in shortly.
00:16:49But surprised that the 12 car has given up that valuable track position.
00:16:54Well, Dorsey, are you surprised to see the Ferrari in this early?
00:16:57Yeah, I think that's awfully early.
00:16:59But that Ferrari motor wouldn't have a beautiful time.
00:17:01Now he's held up in the lane.
00:17:02Now they're going to let him go again.
00:17:03Yeah, I don't think they're far enough in that the fuel window would be open.
00:17:06Not that.
00:17:07Only 15 or so laps into the race.
00:17:09So that's an awful early start.
00:17:11They choose to go off sequence.
00:17:13Great driving lineup here.
00:17:14Mimmo Schiadarella with Formula 1 and car champ car experience
00:17:18paired with Ralph Kellner's German all sorts of sports car experience.
00:17:23You see a bunch of modifications aerodynamically in front of that Ferrari
00:17:26from where it came stock.
00:17:27That's a 333.
00:17:28And they're suffering some motor problems.
00:17:30They don't have quite the horsepower they need.
00:17:32But they've been working on aero.
00:17:33You see that in the front end of it.
00:17:35Ferrari now well along in its design evolution.
00:17:38The car came into sports car racing about eight years ago, if I'm not mistaken.
00:17:42Four-liter Formula 1-derived V12 engine.
00:17:46Five valves per cylinder.
00:17:50Of course, these Judges we're talking about, they're also four-liters and V10s.
00:17:54And they're quite fuel efficient.
00:17:58Let's check in now with the Sports Racer 2 class.
00:18:00Now in its fourth race of existence, there's the car that has dominated this class,
00:18:04Nissan Lola, in the hands of Larry Alberto and Ryan Hampton.
00:18:08Let's take a closer look at this team.
00:18:11The entry list reads Archangel Motorsports Services.
00:18:14The number 22 car, one only has to see the team in action
00:18:18to realize their success is not a result of divine intervention.
00:18:21The man in charge, Michael Johnson, represents a new younger generation of racers,
00:18:26alumnus of MTV's Real World Show, as well as a veteran of European open-wheel racing.
00:18:31When I first got there, I was way out of my league.
00:18:34I mean, I'd gone from spec racers to a really difficult Formula Renault championship.
00:18:38But by the second race, I was running in the top ten and having a great time.
00:18:42And my experience over there taught me a lot about not only driving,
00:18:45but running competitive teams and really seeing all types of aspects
00:18:48that I never saw over here just doing amateur racing.
00:18:51The drivers of the Nissan-powered Lola are Larry Alberto and Ryan Hampton.
00:18:55Sharp-eyed Speed Vision marine viewers will put together that beef jerky sponsorship on the car
00:19:00and the name Alberto.
00:19:02Larry is a part of the Alberto Beef Jerky Empire that has been so prominent in boat racing.
00:19:07Yeah, we're a northwest beef jerky company,
00:19:11and oh boy, Alberto did hydroplane racing for 15 years,
00:19:15and that kind of put us on the map.
00:19:17So I'm trying to get the company more and more into car racing.
00:19:20It's a great opportunity for the company and for me as a driver.
00:19:24So I look forward to the following years.
00:19:26One reason why Alberto and company are looking forward to the next few years
00:19:30is their goal to move up to the featured sports racer class.
00:19:34Team manager Johnson found two young drivers that he knew from racing in the lower divisions
00:19:38and hopes to bring them along to the premier class of Grand Am competition.
00:19:42The transition shouldn't be that much, and working on them is very similar between the two.
00:19:47So it shouldn't be, I think Mike's really wanting to go to the SR category within the next two years.
00:19:53I think he wants to run a two-car program next year.
00:19:55Our long-term goalers are, you know, just keep doing well.
00:19:58As long as we're, I want to be the best in our class, whatever class we're going.
00:20:02And if we can move up to maybe the bigger SR cars, that might be good.
00:20:06One year at a time, though.
00:20:09Good luck in the future to a good-looking young team.
00:20:11Now here's another reason for our current yellow flag.
00:20:13That's Chris Gleason helping to push his BMW M3 out of harm's way.
00:20:19Meanwhile, down in the pit lane, John Bisignano has more on this yellow flag.
00:20:23Intersport Racing, Banana Joe.
00:20:26Stopped with gearbox problems.
00:20:28John Field was battling for right in fourth and fifth place.
00:20:31Day's over for them.
00:20:33Thanks, John. Tough break.
00:20:34And I think you can see it, the body language and the facial expressions of the crew.
00:20:38They thought they had a shot today.
00:20:39There is James Weaver, our pole sitter, looking for his second straight sweep of pole and race victory.
00:20:45We are a long way from that point.
00:20:48We continue under a full course caution.
00:20:50James Weaver in the Ford-powered Riley and Scott.
00:20:53Andy Wallace in the Ford-powered Lola chassis.
00:20:56And Jack Baldwin, not third in line, but third in the race in his Judd-powered Riley and Scott.
00:21:02Look right behind him. It's Didier Thaise, all the way up from 21st, is now in the fourth spot.
00:21:06He's even got by EFR.
00:21:09Belgium is really humming.
00:21:11Have a little bit of overcast.
00:21:13That'll keep the track temperatures cool, and that's good news for the tires.
00:21:16Here's a look at the top ten.
00:21:17There is Thaise in the number four spot ahead of EFR.
00:21:20All sports racers and sports racer two.
00:21:23Featured categories in the Grand Am competition.
00:21:26As I said earlier, we'll see the GTO and GTU machines moving up more and more.
00:21:32Welcome back to the U.S. road racing classic.
00:21:35Bob Barsha and Dorsey Schrader with you.
00:21:37Round five of the Grand American road racing season.
00:21:39Still under a caution flag.
00:21:41Several teams have taken the opportunity for pit stops.
00:21:44The number 37, InterSport Lola, was brought in on a flatbed.
00:21:48Not tall to the pits behind the tow truck.
00:21:51Maybe a continuing story there, and John Visignano is all over it.
00:21:54As we ride with Jack Baldwin, Dorsey, I would guess at this point,
00:21:57everybody is ready to get racing again.
00:21:59Baldwin gets sideways as the green flag comes out.
00:22:02Boy, did you see him get on that throttle.
00:22:05Right on the front straightaway.
00:22:07That would have been a disaster.
00:22:09As we're going to break, I mentioned that high cloud cover keeps the track cool,
00:22:13so those tires are cold.
00:22:15That's what can happen when you get all that horsepower
00:22:17trying to get onto the pavement at the same time.
00:22:19Baldwin now fully in control, moving through traffic.
00:22:24James Weaver has led from pole.
00:22:27Sandy Wallace at the helm of Ford.
00:22:29Check the mirrors there to see if anybody is sneaking up the inside of him or not.
00:22:33I mentioned earlier, these guys have a great relationship.
00:22:36Both men from England cut their racing teeth in single-seaters, open-wheeled cars.
00:22:42They have been racing in America for quite a long time.
00:22:45Wallace with particular distinction in endurance racing.
00:22:48Winner at Daytona, the Rolex 24, a winner at Le Mans, a winner at Sebring.
00:22:52Good battle going on here now.
00:22:54This is for third.
00:22:55Jack Baldwin still getting the rear end squirrelly in that Riley and Scott
00:23:00with the big Judd V10.
00:23:01And just behind him is the man we talked about earlier, Dorsey,
00:23:05Didier Thaise in the Doran Judd Ferrari.
00:23:09Didier coming from 21st.
00:23:11He's coming all the way up through there.
00:23:12He looks a little faster with those two cars right now.
00:23:14And it could be because of that looseness procedure right here.
00:23:16Jack happened to really muscle this car.
00:23:22Another corkscrew.
00:23:23Arm of the start-finish straight.
00:23:25You see the difference when there were two suspensions.
00:23:27He hit the curb there.
00:23:28Didier got up on the curb.
00:23:29But watch the front end of the two cars.
00:23:31And the Ferrari is working quite well over the bumps.
00:23:34Whereas it looks like the 74 car right there is really bumping out.
00:23:42This is the keyhole turn.
00:23:44You can see this engine, this V10 is wonderful.
00:23:48Get a horsepower out of that Judd.
00:23:50You know, nobody's talking horsepower, but you know it's over 600.
00:23:55Backstretch, they come.
00:23:57While John Bisognano has more on the story of the number 37 Lola.
00:24:01Biz, take it away.
00:24:03John Fields, you had a great battle going in that 4th and 5th place.
00:24:06Very competitive out there.
00:24:07What took you out?
00:24:08We lost 1st and 2nd gear.
00:24:10I pulled off the side.
00:24:11I was able to get in 3rd and it restarted.
00:24:13I thought maybe we could limp around from 3rd to 6th.
00:24:15But obviously a little piece of metal just locked the box up.
00:24:18We were having a lot of fun, but it's racing.
00:24:21We're done for the day.
00:24:24Thanks, John.
00:24:25Tough break for that team.
00:24:27Not the kind of place you want to go around without a completely full gearbox.
00:24:32Here's a look at our Sports Racer 2 category class leader,
00:24:35Larry Alberto and the Archangel team we met earlier.
00:24:38Just ahead of him on the road there,
00:24:40that 00 Mustang is the leader in the American GT category.
00:24:44Bruce Nesbitt and Paul Jenkins in a Ford Mustang.
00:24:50As you can see, the open cockpit Sports Racer 2 car,
00:24:54although it's less powerful than the big sports racers,
00:24:57still able to get around some of the AGT machinery.
00:25:01AGT car's going at it pretty good there.
00:25:03I saw one of the brakes go off.
00:25:05There's a zero right there.
00:25:07The rubber fell out.
00:25:09Oh, man, he almost hit the wall there.
00:25:12I just saw that.
00:25:13I thought he was a little wide there.
00:25:15A big piece of rubber came out of that cover.
00:25:20Got a great battle going on in AGT.
00:25:22That silver 09 car is the spirit of Daytona.
00:25:25Chevy Camaro.
00:25:28Another look at that.
00:25:30Close moment there for the Nesbitt car.
00:25:32Boy, that battle was almost over.
00:25:34You don't want to wreck there.
00:25:35That's what I'm saying.
00:25:36Concrete comes right out to the edge of the track there.
00:25:39It's a good look at that car.
00:25:41Originally built by Jack Roush.
00:25:43So much success, road racing Ford products
00:25:46in the late 80s and early 90s.
00:25:48Old Tommy Kendall car, the GTO car,
00:25:50now it's running a NASCAR motor.
00:25:53That hop on the backstretch at the far reaches of the racetrack.
00:25:57Front wheels coming off the ground.
00:25:59Steering getting light.
00:26:00And over this one, it's dipping down into the valley,
00:26:03heading for the corkscrew.
00:26:04Saw it get light right there when you said that.
00:26:06He came over the top of the back end,
00:26:08twitched out like he did when he almost got to the wall
00:26:10of the lap before.
00:26:12It's a gentle foot on the throttle here at Mid-Ohio.
00:26:16Here comes the battle in GTO.
00:26:19Here comes the battle in GTO.
00:26:21You should take a look at that number 18.
00:26:23That's a GTU Porsche.
00:26:25That's Randy Popes, a class leader in GTU.
00:26:27So all of our class leaders running close together.
00:26:30I guess we might expect what happened
00:26:32on the 2.25 mile reaches of Mid-Ohio.
00:26:36Randy Popes sharing with one of only two female drivers
00:26:39in the field.
00:26:40Kimberly Hiskey from Monroe, Washington,
00:26:42sharing the controls of that Porsche with Randy Popes.
00:26:44The other lady driver in the field,
00:26:46Jennifer Tuminelli from Zimbrick, California,
00:26:49in a Porsche GT3R, the GTU class.
00:26:52One of the funny things about Mid-Ohio is we saw that
00:26:54gang up of different class cars there.
00:26:56These GTU cars are actually going to be faster
00:26:59in the twisty bits in the back than that GT car
00:27:02that we saw before.
00:27:04Racing continues here at Mid-Ohio.
00:27:06We'll be back in a moment.
00:27:07Don't go away.
00:27:10Back at Mid-Ohio, there's a good look at Andy Wallace
00:27:13in that, well, frankly, kind of bizarre-looking
00:27:16new Lola V2K chassis.
00:27:20An amazing aerodynamic treatment on that car.
00:27:22Looks like an old Chevy business coupe
00:27:24with that bulbous nose right in the middle of that car.
00:27:28Tell you what, that thing makes some mega downforce
00:27:30with the same chassis that I'm driving.
00:27:32It's a good development, I find.
00:27:34It's a good car.
00:27:36Well, the battles have cooled.
00:27:37Let's take a moment to meet one of the key people
00:27:39behind the Grand American Road Racing Series
00:27:41and he's been around endurance racing for a long time.
00:27:44Here's John Bisignano with Mark Rappoff.
00:27:47Thank you very much, Bob.
00:27:48As you said, Mark Rappoff has been around this game
00:27:50for a very long period of time.
00:27:52But Grand American Racing, this is their fifth weekend,
00:27:55and Mark, congratulations on a great entry here
00:27:57in Mid-Ohio, over 40 cars.
00:27:59You must be very surprised with that.
00:28:02Surprised, yes, but pleased because it's the path
00:28:04that we chose to try and get the competition
00:28:06to the point where people with different kinds
00:28:08of equipment could come out and race
00:28:10and put on a good show, and I think we're there.
00:28:12So summarize the first part of this season.
00:28:14Well, obviously when you start with a 24-hour race,
00:28:16it's tough, but every event since then,
00:28:18we've had a lot of different winners
00:28:20with different kinds of equipment.
00:28:21The competition has been really good,
00:28:23and we're very pleased with where we are
00:28:24after five events.
00:28:25Well, that competition, it's difficult to find parity
00:28:27in so many different classes.
00:28:29Now, some people are saying they need a little bit of help.
00:28:31Are you going to be tweaking the rule book yet this year?
00:28:34Well, that's always an option, John,
00:28:36but you have to watch and see what the equipment
00:28:38that people do and what the circumstances are
00:28:40over a course of events, and we're doing that,
00:28:42and again, after just four races actually complete,
00:28:45and we're at the fifth one,
00:28:46it's probably a little too early to make abrupt changes,
00:28:48but we always keep an eye on everybody,
00:28:50and we try and keep that parity there.
00:28:52There are so many Ferrari fans watching on TV,
00:28:54coming to the tracks.
00:28:55Now, they want to see that Ferrari running up front.
00:28:57Can you help them with their power situation?
00:29:00Well, that's always an option,
00:29:01but if you look at the time so far this weekend,
00:29:03they've been here, they're at the front,
00:29:05they're very close, as are other people
00:29:07and the competition at the front is so close
00:29:09that we're really talking fractions of a second here,
00:29:12and that's good to see,
00:29:13but we'll always keep an eye on all the packages
00:29:15to make sure they're in the hunt.
00:29:16Well, Mark Raffoff, congratulations again.
00:29:18He is going to be keeping an eye on this entire grid
00:29:21all season long.
00:29:23All right, thank you, John,
00:29:24and thank you to series race director Mark Raffoff
00:29:27on board with Jack Baldwin,
00:29:28third overall in the sports racer class.
00:29:32Give a wave right there to Archer.
00:29:34That was Tommy Archer who moved aside there
00:29:36and turned one level off the inside.
00:29:39Down the keyhole, slightly off camber,
00:29:41a little dip in the middle of it,
00:29:43changes of pavement from asphalt to concrete.
00:29:47A whole world worth of racetrack
00:29:48right there in one corner.
00:29:52This is second place, Andy Wallace.
00:29:54The orange number eight car has it.
00:29:56Jack Baldwin closing in now, wants it.
00:30:00Over to our AGT class leader, Bruce Nesbitt.
00:30:03That Ford Mustang.
00:30:05Front end getting light as it came over there.
00:30:07The back end gets light right there.
00:30:08That's where he almost got into the wall.
00:30:10Back.
00:30:11I'm sure that scare is over now.
00:30:13Craig Conway right behind him.
00:30:14That's first and second in class.
00:30:16Nose to tail on the racetrack here at mid-oh.
00:30:20I imagine by this point,
00:30:21Craig Conway is just watching Bruce Nesbitt
00:30:23logging that Ford around the tracks.
00:30:26I'd like to stay right here for a minute
00:30:28and see if Bruce takes himself out of my way.
00:30:31Power down loose off both those corners.
00:30:34Straight right there.
00:30:35His rear tires are starting to give up a little bit.
00:30:38Great first corner right there.
00:30:40Very, very quick.
00:30:42That's what racing drivers love.
00:30:43Fast corners.
00:30:47Nesbitt hard on the brakes now.
00:30:48Flames from the exhaust as he downshifts that big V8.
00:30:53There's the number 12 car.
00:30:54We saw this car brought into the pits
00:30:56by Mimmo Schiatorella early on.
00:30:58Out of sequence on its pit stops.
00:31:00On board now with Mike Fitzgerald,
00:31:0220th overall and 2nd in class
00:31:05as the Ferrari comes screaming by.
00:31:10Pretty good view of what it's like to be in a GTU car
00:31:12and look in the rear of your mirror
00:31:13and get blown completely off
00:31:15by one of these fast sports racers.
00:31:17Good example of why those drivers have to be so careful
00:31:20with faster cars around them.
00:31:22There's one of the GTU cars off the road completely.
00:31:26It's crazy.
00:31:31Mimmo Schiatorella.
00:31:34There's our leader in the GTO class,
00:31:36Tommy Archer in that brand new Dodge Viper.
00:31:40I'm sure the saline Mustang, though.
00:31:42There it is just behind him.
00:31:43I was going to say, I'm sure he's not far away.
00:31:48Between those two, one of our sports two category cars
00:31:51right in the middle of that fight.
00:31:53Of course, it should be quicker right up here
00:31:55until they get around that corner on the straightaway
00:31:57in that V10 there.
00:31:59Nothing like the inter and intra class battles
00:32:02in endurance sports car racing.
00:32:03Keep in mind, 82 is not only trying to hold position
00:32:06ahead of the number five Mustang,
00:32:08it's also trying to hold off that number six sports two racer
00:32:11because that's for overall position on the track
00:32:13as they come down the backside.
00:32:15Catching a slower car, which just ran over something.
00:32:17The tractor threw it up in front.
00:32:20I don't know what that was, but that Porsche hit something.
00:32:23Same color as that GTU Porsche up ahead,
00:32:25but it's hard to say.
00:32:26Now we've got pit stop action.
00:32:28Andy Wallace coming in a little slowly there
00:32:30in that second place.
00:32:31Lola and the race leader is in as well.
00:32:34Driver change.
00:32:35Here's Calvin Fish.
00:32:37The leader, James Weaver, is in the pits.
00:32:39Kind of caught the team by surprise.
00:32:40A sudden yellow, and James just blasted down pit lane.
00:32:43Butch Leisinger was not ready.
00:32:45He was still pulling his gloves on
00:32:46as he actually came into the car.
00:32:48James helps him into the car.
00:32:50Team are completing a four-tire change.
00:32:52Fuel is in.
00:32:53They're just waiting on the drive change.
00:32:54Actually a problem with the right front,
00:32:55but that's OK now.
00:32:56Car is on the ground.
00:32:57Some damage to the right side.
00:32:59Looks like James may have got into someone.
00:33:02From the extreme end of the pit lane,
00:33:03it's a straight shot back on track.
00:33:05Now, as Calvin mentioned, we have a yellow flag.
00:33:08Our second full course caution of the day
00:33:09as Andy Wallace leads.
00:33:10There's the reason.
00:33:15Welcome back to Mid-Ohio
00:33:16in the U.S. Road Racing Classic.
00:33:18Bob Marshall along with Dorsey Schrader,
00:33:20Calvin Fish, and John Bisognano
00:33:21with you for round five
00:33:22of the inaugural Grand American Road Racing season.
00:33:26We have a new race leader.
00:33:27There it is, Jack Baldwin,
00:33:29having taken over with the two cars ahead of him
00:33:31pitted under this caution flag.
00:33:34James Weaver climbed out,
00:33:35made way for Butch Leisinger,
00:33:37while Andy Wallace stayed in the cockpit
00:33:40of his Ford-powered Lola.
00:33:43Talked about the judge being fuel-efficient,
00:33:45so he didn't come in right then.
00:33:46Watch his turn one,
00:33:47a blindingly fast corner,
00:33:49and as he comes off this,
00:33:50listen to this judge go to work here.
00:34:02Ooh, in there a little hot.
00:34:03Gets very wide of the apex there.
00:34:05Couldn't save.
00:34:22Great-sounding V10 engine.
00:34:24Once again, I think Ford tires
00:34:26maybe want to jack out just that little bit.
00:34:30Couldn't save there.
00:34:31Got in way too hot.
00:34:32Saw the car skate across the racetrack.
00:34:34Headed out toward the field.
00:34:35Gathered it up.
00:34:36Look at the lead.
00:34:37Whoo!
00:34:38Got my cold tires.
00:34:40Butch Leisinger takes over.
00:34:42Second in the class.
00:34:45Tyson crew able to get Leisinger out there
00:34:47and lose just one position on the racetrack
00:34:49thanks to the caution.
00:34:50But great battle now
00:34:51as they've got the Ferrari right behind Leisinger.
00:34:54Ooh, here comes Wallace in the Lola.
00:34:58Boy, oh boy.
00:34:59That's quite surprising.
00:35:03Mintarella in that red number 12 Ferrari.
00:35:06We go back to Leisinger.
00:35:08This is second, third, and fourth overall.
00:35:14Look there at Wallace.
00:35:17Did not get out of the Lola.
00:35:19Turn one.
00:35:21Ooh, and smoke off the back of the Dyson racing car
00:35:24with Leisinger.
00:35:27James, once again, a great opening stint there.
00:35:29Pulled a bit of a lead on Andy.
00:35:30Then the caution.
00:35:31He came in all of a sudden, though.
00:35:32Almost caught Butch on the hop.
00:35:34Yeah, I was just coming into the final corner.
00:35:36They said pit now.
00:35:38So I was there.
00:35:39And I saw Butch wasn't ready.
00:35:40So I started to stay in the car.
00:35:42And then he had gloves and hats going everywhere.
00:35:44But he got himself organized.
00:35:45It didn't cost us any time.
00:35:48Apparently, it did not
00:35:49as we pick up the battle for first in GTU.
00:35:51Randy Popes in the number 18 car
00:35:54leading Mike Fitzgerald in the 81.
00:35:57It's an all-Porsche battle, as you see.
00:35:59Oh!
00:36:00I lose control.
00:36:04Popes keeps pushing hard.
00:36:06Porsche ahead of him.
00:36:08He's about to be lapped.
00:36:09It's the 18 and the 81 that we're concerned about right now.
00:36:12There's your class summary.
00:36:13Popes running in 15th overall with Fitzgerald just behind him.
00:36:20We pointed out earlier, Dorsey, that these cars,
00:36:22the GTU machinery, in many ways,
00:36:25work better than the bigger, more powerful GTO cars
00:36:28around mid-Ohio.
00:36:29Yeah, half the track is so windy and twisty.
00:36:31The little cars are very agile.
00:36:33They can get around it really well.
00:36:34The big cars have trouble getting the power down.
00:36:36Of course, they're going to be quick on the straightaway.
00:36:38Look here.
00:36:39Got a good battle going on.
00:36:41Couple of generations of the classic Porsche 911 there.
00:36:44On the right is the GT3R,
00:36:46the latest iteration of the 911 for GTU racing.
00:36:50That's the point of dividing these cars into class
00:36:52by engine displacement and weight,
00:36:54is to allow more drivers to compete among themselves
00:36:59rather than just watching the very fastest cars
00:37:02disappear over the horizon.
00:37:09Perhaps the greatest name in endurance sports car racing,
00:37:12Porsche, for so many years,
00:37:14victories at Le Mans, at Sebring, at Daytona,
00:37:17at the great endurance races around the world.
00:37:20I look forward to seeing Porsche come back
00:37:22to the very front rank of endurance racing
00:37:24in front of the sports racer class.
00:37:26Well, there's our pole-sitting GTO car.
00:37:29Michael McCann, the team owner,
00:37:31has taken over from the man who put it on pole,
00:37:33Tommy Archer.
00:37:34He's had a problem early in his stint.
00:37:37Got himself out in the gravel trap,
00:37:38and he's probably stuck.
00:37:39Now we look at Ron Johnson,
00:37:41who's relieved Terry Borcheller in the saloon.
00:37:44Now he's going to have a great big lead
00:37:45because the viper is quite stuck.
00:37:49And that will bring out
00:37:50our third full-course caution of the day.
00:37:53There's McCann stuck in the gravel,
00:37:55and this will be a great benefit
00:37:57to Jack Baldwin up front.
00:37:58He did not stop under the previous yellow.
00:38:02And sure enough, here comes the race leader.
00:38:04Here's Calvin.
00:38:06Number 74 car is in.
00:38:0765 mile an hour speed limit,
00:38:09and Jack Baldwin brings it in.
00:38:10He's going to switch it over.
00:38:11Rather a strange strategy here
00:38:13because I do not believe
00:38:14that this car can make it without another stop.
00:38:16George Robinson caught on the hop a little bit.
00:38:18He's trying to get in.
00:38:19They're fighting over the side of the car there.
00:38:21George didn't have his gloves ready.
00:38:22Didn't expect Jack to be in quite so soon.
00:38:24So this is happening under caution.
00:38:26It shouldn't be too much of a problem,
00:38:28but it isn't the cleanest pit stop
00:38:29driver change-wise.
00:38:30Meanwhile, the team goes to work.
00:38:32Four new good years going on.
00:38:34The fueling looks like it's about complete,
00:38:35and Jack Baldwin stays in the cockpit
00:38:37to assist George Robinson there
00:38:38with the driver change.
00:38:39And that is going to hang things up a bit
00:38:41as we speak.
00:38:42The No. 12 Ferrari is in right behind them.
00:38:44It looks like Mibuschia Torella
00:38:46is going to stay in that car.
00:38:47He does, in fact.
00:38:48It'll be Ralph Kennell
00:38:49as he'll eventually turn it over, too.
00:38:51So I'd suggest that certainly the Ferrari
00:38:52will need to make another stop
00:38:53and split the rest of this race distance.
00:38:55Meanwhile, the driver change still goes on
00:38:57with George Robinson and Jack Baldwin.
00:38:59A lengthy stop,
00:39:00and they lose track position to the Ferrari.
00:39:02Well, there's a classic example
00:39:04of what can happen to you
00:39:06when your pit stops are not well tuned.
00:39:10You need to do a little practice there.
00:39:11You saw George go all the way across the car
00:39:13from the inside out to the other side
00:39:15and have to get back in again.
00:39:16That's not good.
00:39:17And they lose a position on the racetrack as a result.
00:39:20Heard Calvin Fish say it.
00:39:22Mibuschia Torella stays in the Ferrari.
00:39:24On board now with car owner George Robinson.
00:39:27Was to have driven this car
00:39:28when it was debuted at Phoenix, Arizona,
00:39:31but he took sick, could not get in it.
00:39:33Went on to win the race anyway.
00:39:34We'll be back.
00:39:37Welcome back to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
00:39:40in the U.S. Road Racing Classic.
00:39:42Grand American Road Racing Trail,
00:39:44Bob Varsha along with Dorsey Schrader.
00:39:46We are under a full course caution
00:39:48for the third time today.
00:39:49You see the field making its way around,
00:39:51bunching up for a restart.
00:39:53Not much mechanical attrition here today,
00:39:55but that's not unusual at Mid-Ohio
00:39:57where there's lots of runoff at the corners.
00:39:59Drivers can make mistakes and not suffer for it.
00:40:01On board with Darren Law,
00:40:02who has taken over this GTU class-leading Porsche
00:40:05from his teammate,
00:40:06and he just bumps Paul Jenkins in that Mustang.
00:40:09Yeah, look what he's doing.
00:40:10He's trying to get Jenkins to go
00:40:11because Jenkins hasn't caught up to the field.
00:40:13Look, he's pumping him all the way through the carousel.
00:40:15He wants him to get up there and catch this other guy.
00:40:17Look how much it's held him back.
00:40:19Oh, my.
00:40:20And immediately he goes to the inside
00:40:22to try to get around that American GT Mustang.
00:40:25I'm not sure he was going to be able to do it.
00:40:26And now we've got the Ferrari in the pits
00:40:29for what looks like a 10-second stop-and-go penalty.
00:40:32Word from the pit lane is that Mimo Schiattarello
00:40:35was a little too enthusiastic on his pit entry
00:40:39on the previous stop
00:40:40and came in above the 65-mile-an-hour pit lane speed limit.
00:40:45A critical mistake for the Italian,
00:40:47and there's more from the pits as well.
00:40:49Here's John Bisignano.
00:40:51Jack, you look like you're having more fun out there
00:40:53than I've ever seen you have.
00:40:54You know, that was really fun
00:40:56driving that Informic software rallying Scott.
00:40:58It was a blast.
00:41:00It was a blast.
00:41:01Why'd you stay out so long?
00:41:02Because Jimmy told me to.
00:41:04And because you could. Fuel wise.
00:41:06Oh, I could.
00:41:07And, you know, when they dropped in,
00:41:08I was behind that eight car,
00:41:09and they dropped in, and I said,
00:41:10should I follow him, should I follow him?
00:41:11He said, no, stay out.
00:41:12At first I went, oh, man.
00:41:14Maybe that's the wrong thing,
00:41:15but, you know, Jim Frazier's in charge of this stuff.
00:41:18I just do what he says.
00:41:19That's the easiest way.
00:41:20A little bit longer of a stop than you wanted, though.
00:41:22Yeah, I don't know what happened to George.
00:41:24George was supposed to come in from the other side of the car.
00:41:26So I don't know why he was this side.
00:41:29I guess some malfunction,
00:41:31or he couldn't get there, whatever.
00:41:33But, hey, at least he was under caution.
00:41:35Nobody enjoys their racing more than Jack Baldwin.
00:41:38No question about that.
00:41:40Many championships running the production-based machinery
00:41:43of the old International Motorsports Association.
00:41:46Baldwin from Marietta, Georgia,
00:41:48has seen his share of racing miles here in mid-Ohio.
00:41:51These two guys can't get apart.
00:41:53Look at this.
00:41:54Three wide now going up this door turn one.
00:41:57I don't have to put that through.
00:41:59This is for GTU class leadership.
00:42:02Aaron Law driving aggressively.
00:42:04Goes by Randy Bogues.
00:42:06Now there's Law's teammate up ahead,
00:42:08and he's gesturing at him.
00:42:10Get out of my way!
00:42:13Meanwhile, here is John Paul Jr.,
00:42:15the number 20 Ford Riley in Scott for Dyson Racing,
00:42:18having taken over from Elliot Ford Robinson.
00:42:20He's got a battle on his hands as well.
00:42:24Goes up into 11th overall,
00:42:26and he's ninth in the sports racer category,
00:42:29so he has some ground to make up.
00:42:32Going by the number 29 Ford Riley in Scott,
00:42:36shared by John Field and his Intersport Racing teammates.
00:42:41Now we've got another yellow flag,
00:42:43our fourth full-course caution.
00:42:45That's a shame.
00:42:46We've been getting some green flag laps in.
00:42:48There's the reason the number 50
00:42:50Genesis Racing BMW M3 Rick Fairbank started it.
00:42:54It appears that he has fairly comprehensively finished it.
00:42:57Yeah.
00:42:58You saw that right rear axle sticking out
00:43:00from where the fender used to be.
00:43:02He's backed into something.
00:43:04That'll end his day.
00:43:06That's a shame.
00:43:07Will Oberlin was to have gotten in that car.
00:43:09He is quick, but he will not.
00:43:11We'll be back.
00:43:16Welcome back to mid-Ohio,
00:43:17once again getting set for a restart
00:43:19here at the U.S. Road Racing Classic.
00:43:22Bob Varsha, Dorsey Schrader, Calvin Fish,
00:43:24and John Visignano with you.
00:43:26Once again, we go on board Darren Law's Porsche,
00:43:29beating the GTU category.
00:43:31Once again, one of the AGT cars ahead of him.
00:43:34It's the spirit of Daytona, Chevy Camaro.
00:43:40Once again, Darren Law gets right up there,
00:43:44the bumper, if not further forward.
00:43:48He wanted to get a good run.
00:43:49There's the start coming out right here.
00:43:54He has a gap as they head down toward one.
00:43:5709 car, shared by Doug Goad and Craig Conway,
00:44:01moving away smartly.
00:44:02And in fact, Iver comes right up the inside too.
00:44:04That's the power difference.
00:44:05Of course, those are the fast cars, the GTO cars.
00:44:08Maybe Law was a little caught out by that green flag,
00:44:12but now he's back up to speed.
00:44:15Meanwhile, up toward the front,
00:44:17Butch Leitzinger leads away.
00:44:19Andy Wallace in second place, number eight.
00:44:21And all over the back of him is Didier Teys.
00:44:23Recall that this Ferrari with the Judd engine
00:44:26started back in 21st position
00:44:28after they changed the engine following the first round of qualifying.
00:44:32Didier Teys, who has not yet gotten out of the car,
00:44:35has moved it all the way up to battle for second place.
00:44:39Well, at least he did until right there,
00:44:41and all of a sudden we don't see him.
00:44:42It's smoke. I saw smoke coming out of it.
00:44:44I think he might have lost the motor or something back there.
00:44:47I don't see the car there coming.
00:44:49There he is.
00:44:51Lots of smoke.
00:44:52That's out of the front.
00:44:55It's a wheel or something.
00:44:56It's from the right front wheel.
00:44:57It looks like the front of the car is dragging on the ground.
00:45:00Is he lost? Yes!
00:45:01Problems at the right front
00:45:03as the wheel comes completely adrift.
00:45:06Well, the whole wheel is gone now.
00:45:08He's driving on three,
00:45:09and luckily this is the pit entrance that he's at.
00:45:11That is very fortunate.
00:45:13Now, it wouldn't be a surprise
00:45:14if something like this happened right after a pit stop,
00:45:16and perhaps they wouldn't get the right front wheel on completely.
00:45:19This car has been on the track for some time.
00:45:23As you mentioned,
00:45:24fortunate that Teys was right there at the pit in
00:45:26and able to get to his pit stall.
00:45:28Let's see if he comes out.
00:45:29Here's Calvin.
00:45:30Number 27, Didier Teys, brings it in.
00:45:33The Duran Lister Special.
00:45:34They're going to obviously try and replace that right front wheel.
00:45:37Hopefully no damage has been done.
00:45:39It's going to be Mauro Baldi jumping in here.
00:45:41Again, the team caught unawares.
00:45:43Kevin Duran is actually down in the Competizione Risi team
00:45:47and having a chat down there.
00:45:49When suddenly he got the call on the radio
00:45:50there was a problem with the 27 car.
00:45:52They come back around here.
00:45:53The team is inspecting this right front spindle.
00:45:56It looks like it's been beat up pretty bad,
00:45:58so there may be some concern here.
00:45:59They're actually going to have to put the wheel on.
00:46:01They're going to try and re-thread this,
00:46:02but this is a little bit of a concern for the team
00:46:04to put a wheel on under these conditions.
00:46:07Looks like the nut is definitely not wanting to thread onto the spindle.
00:46:10This could be a big problem.
00:46:11They go to another type nut, another style nut.
00:46:14This one looks like it may want to go on,
00:46:15but it's cross-threading as we speak.
00:46:17This is dangerous stuff, guys.
00:46:20And I think this is going to be a very lengthy pit stop
00:46:23for the Duran team.
00:46:25All right, thank you, Calvin.
00:46:26You saw the wheel come back off.
00:46:28Mechanics reaching into that wheel well
00:46:30and going for the heat-resistant gloves.
00:46:32Very hot there in that well.
00:46:35Those threads have got to be really messed up
00:46:36because that wheel was on there.
00:46:39The lug nut is missing,
00:46:41and I'm sure they're all really messed up.
00:46:45This guy isn't.
00:46:46Absolutely not.
00:46:47Butch Leitzinger from State College, Pennsylvania,
00:46:50having taken over from James Weaver,
00:46:52who put this car on pole.
00:46:54It's going very well for Dyson Racing right now.
00:46:57And here comes the Ferrari back out now
00:47:00as the Duran team apparently has affected the fix,
00:47:03and we've had a driver change.
00:47:05Mauro Baldi from Monte Carlo
00:47:07has taken over for Didier Thaes.
00:47:11And as we speak, here comes Mauro Baldi
00:47:14rocketing up past our GTU leader.
00:47:17He has any questions about the efficacy
00:47:19of that repair to the right front.
00:47:20Doesn't appear to show it.
00:47:22You'd think he'd be a little bit nervous and tenuous
00:47:24at this other end of the straightaway pit.
00:47:26It was a big accident.
00:47:28Here's Ball, Jr., up to third overall.
00:47:30Earlier, we saw him running ninth in the class,
00:47:33ninth overall.
00:47:34But with all the pit stop action
00:47:36and drivers going off course,
00:47:39Ball, Jr. has been able to haul that car forward.
00:47:42A little left front wing
00:47:44after he let the action loose on that car.
00:47:46So that leaned over twice now in the corner
00:47:48and it's still attached,
00:47:49so it shouldn't make much difference.
00:47:51On board with George Robinson in fourth
00:47:53after that lengthy pit stop
00:47:55and the driver exchange with his partner, Jack Baldwin.
00:47:58As we look at our running order,
00:48:00we'll take a break and return to mid-Ohio
00:48:02for more road racing.
00:48:05Welcome back to mid-Ohio.
00:48:06Now, this was the scene a few moments ago
00:48:09as Didier Thies lost the right front wheel.
00:48:12You saw the lug nut holding the wheel on fly off.
00:48:15Finally, the wheel flies off itself.
00:48:17Calvin Fish is with Thies.
00:48:20Didier, it looked like you had a great run going.
00:48:22You're right at the front of the field
00:48:24and suddenly you lose a wheel.
00:48:25That's typical after a pit stop.
00:48:27You had many laps on the car.
00:48:29Yeah, many laps after the pit stop.
00:48:30I don't understand why the car was running fine.
00:48:32I was very conservative with my tires
00:48:34because I know James and Andy had to pit more than us.
00:48:38I think one pit stop for us was enough
00:48:40and I think they had to do a splash
00:48:42because I was just waiting and see what's going on.
00:48:45All of a sudden, I had some vibration
00:48:47on the braking in the hand of the straightaway
00:48:49and I saw the smokes.
00:48:50I thought to myself it was maybe a puncture
00:48:52because I had a lot of vibration on the right-hand side
00:48:54and then when I show up on the king on the back there,
00:48:56I saw the right wheel leaving the car
00:48:59and I had to stop during the green
00:49:02and look what the problem was, put a new wheel.
00:49:05I think we lost maybe one lap there.
00:49:07Yeah, it's going to be tough going for the 27 car.
00:49:09They had such a strong car this afternoon
00:49:11and it looked like the strategy was going their way
00:49:13until that scheduled stop.
00:49:16That definitely sums it up, Calvin,
00:49:18as we pick up John Paul Jr.
00:49:20continuing to fly along,
00:49:22now up to third overall
00:49:24and third in the sports racer category
00:49:27for Riley and Scott for Dyson Racing.
00:49:34Former champion in these cars,
00:49:35going back to the early 80s.
00:49:37John Paul Jr. has grown up around racing.
00:49:40Here's one of our GTO contenders.
00:49:42This is the Saleem Mustang
00:49:44for Borcheller and Johnson.
00:49:46We've got a driver change here.
00:49:49Coming off three victories
00:49:51in the first four races of the season.
00:49:54This car is really coming into its own
00:49:56in Grand Am Racing.
00:49:58I believe that's Terry Borcheller
00:49:59getting back in the car now.
00:50:00This will be a double stint for him
00:50:02as we'll see Ron Johnson
00:50:03helping him get the win on that.
00:50:05Borcheller will take control
00:50:07of that car to the finish now.
00:50:11We talked about the problems
00:50:12they had two weeks ago at Lime Rock.
00:50:14The sticking throttle,
00:50:16which Ron Johnson handled
00:50:17by actually flicking off the ignition switch
00:50:20to help slow the car.
00:50:22The car then caught fire
00:50:23during a driver change.
00:50:24Johnson tried to come out.
00:50:25The crew forced him back into the car
00:50:27and said, don't worry,
00:50:28we'll put the fire out.
00:50:29You're not in any danger.
00:50:30I'm not sure he saw it quite that way.
00:50:32And they used up all the fire extinguisher powder
00:50:34and so forth to put the fire out.
00:50:39Working at the back of the car,
00:50:40word has it, they're having a problem
00:50:42getting the tail lights on.
00:50:44As we pick up Stu Hainer
00:50:45and the other Dodge Viper in the field.
00:50:48That one from EMI Racing.
00:50:51Hainer sharing with Eric Messley.
00:50:53Now they're pushing the five car.
00:50:56So there may be more problems there.
00:50:58We've got a car off.
00:50:59This is the Sports Racer 2 category machine
00:51:01from Martin Snow and Larry Schumacher.
00:51:04Now we've got something going on in the pit lane.
00:51:07That's former Le Mans 24 Hours winner Stanley Dickens
00:51:10in the Ferrari owned and driven by
00:51:12Bobby Brown.
00:51:13Hails from right here in Lexington, Ohio.
00:51:15Appears to have lost the fire in that car.
00:51:17He may have stalled it
00:51:18trying to get around the Mustang.
00:51:20When they go to the left,
00:51:21their tires are looking around underneath there.
00:51:23I don't know.
00:51:24Looks like maybe the car locked up on him.
00:51:26He just can't get it to roll or do anything.
00:51:28Bobby Brown.
00:51:29He's getting out.
00:51:30Looks like he's got smoke or some sort of fire.
00:51:32Now the saline car is finally getting out of the way.
00:51:36Bobby Brown hails from right here in Lexington, Ohio.
00:51:39Bobby Brown hails from right here in Lexington, Ohio.
00:51:42Sharing with Stanley Dickens,
00:51:43a former 24 Hours of Le Mans winner.
00:51:46So while that goes on,
00:51:47the saline team deals with their problems.
00:51:50I think the Ferrari's actually was on fire
00:51:52burning back there.
00:51:53You can see a lot of smoke.
00:51:55Finally they get the saline up
00:51:57and I think it's out of the way now.
00:51:59While safety crews continue to work
00:52:01on Bobby Brown's Ferrari,
00:52:03John Bisognano has caught up with Michael McCann.
00:52:06Michael McCann,
00:52:07what a great afternoon for your Viper,
00:52:09but it ended in the sand trap.
00:52:11Yeah, it did.
00:52:12The car was running great.
00:52:13Tommy started out very well.
00:52:14I felt real good in the car when we got in.
00:52:16I felt like I had a lot for the saline.
00:52:19I was having some trouble with the traffic.
00:52:21I couldn't get through in some areas
00:52:22that I thought I should.
00:52:23I think I got a little frustrated
00:52:25and I really don't know.
00:52:26I don't know what happened on seven.
00:52:27The next thing I know I'm in the sand trap.
00:52:29So I'm going to find a way as a learning experience
00:52:32and look forward to next time and just go on.
00:52:36Well, that's all you do.
00:52:37Chalk it up to experience.
00:52:38Now with the problems to the saline Mustang
00:52:40and McCann's Viper,
00:52:42the Stu Hayner Viper is now the race leader in GTO.
00:52:46Once again, we are under a yellow flag.
00:52:48We'll be back.
00:52:54Back at mid-Ohio, still under caution.
00:52:56Bob Barsch along with Dorsey Schrader with you
00:52:59for the U.S. Road Racing Classic.
00:53:00The number 20 Dyson Racing Ford Rally in Scott
00:53:04is in the pits.
00:53:05John Paul Jr. climbs out for a good stint worth of work
00:53:08and Elliott Forbes Robinson climbs in.
00:53:11It's all looking pretty routine.
00:53:13You see, they didn't have the driver change problem
00:53:15that the Robinson crew had earlier on.
00:53:17The guy's putting four new tires on.
00:53:19Good years.
00:53:20Wiping out the radiator inlets right there.
00:53:22Just, I think, no panic in this pit stop.
00:53:26Interesting that the Dyson team,
00:53:27with the same Ford engines in both cars,
00:53:30badges one as a Ford Rally in Scott,
00:53:32that car, the number 20,
00:53:33and the other, the number 16 car,
00:53:35leading the race at the moment,
00:53:36badged as a Lincoln Rally in Scott.
00:53:39And, of course, they're exactly the same car.
00:53:41In fact, I won this race in that car two years ago,
00:53:44so those cars have been around a long time.
00:53:46Here's a brand-new Renard of the S2 class.
00:53:49This is the Schumacher snow machine
00:53:51that we saw spin off earlier,
00:53:52and there's the reason, I think.
00:53:53You see the left rear is flat.
00:53:55Quite flat.
00:53:58So he is trying to limp that car around.
00:54:00Now we've got a pit stop.
00:54:01Here's Biz.
00:54:03Butch Leisinger darts into his stopping area.
00:54:05James Weaver over the side of the car.
00:54:08The number 16 has been in the lead
00:54:10of the sports racing class virtually the entire time.
00:54:13A little bit of damage here
00:54:15on the right-hand side of the car.
00:54:16Part of the carbon fiber has been pulled away,
00:54:19and it definitely hit right in the midsection,
00:54:22just behind the radiator.
00:54:23Very lucky that that hit did not happen.
00:54:26Only a couple feet forward,
00:54:28there would definitely be some liquids
00:54:29leaking from the lead car.
00:54:31Again, traffic, traffic, traffic.
00:54:33But I'll tell you, James Weaver thinks
00:54:35that this Riley and Scott is the best car to have out there
00:54:39in serious traffic situations.
00:54:41All right, thanks, Biz.
00:54:42And I think maybe that car has seen impacts more than once.
00:54:45Earlier, Didier Thijs said the jet-powered cars
00:54:48could go on one stop in a splash.
00:54:50The Dyson team has been through two full stops
00:54:52with its Ford-powered cars.
00:54:54Meanwhile, there's Scott Schubot
00:54:55having taken over from Andy Wallace.
00:54:57Here's Calvin Fish.
00:54:58While Schubot was making his change,
00:55:00the number 74 car has been brought in.
00:55:02George Robson has now handed over to Jack Baldwin
00:55:04to try and take it to the finish.
00:55:06Again, the driver changed it in a little bit of time.
00:55:08The crews have been leading their way.
00:55:10Jack is on his way.
00:55:12All right, thank you, Calvin.
00:55:13Now let's get back to the subject of impact.
00:55:15With more than 40 cars in five classes on track at one time,
00:55:19getting around slower cars safely
00:55:20is one of the prerequisites of Grand American road racing.
00:55:23Most of the time, it's second nature to these drivers,
00:55:26but sometimes things can go very wrong.
00:55:29Case in point, the last round at Lime Rock Park,
00:55:31where two sports racers came up on a slower SR2 car,
00:55:34and a Spencer in the slower car tried to stay out of the way,
00:55:37but John Field touched him and sent him into a violent spin.
00:55:41John got what we call tunnel vision.
00:55:43He was just so intent on the back of the car in front of him,
00:55:45he just forgot about checking the side,
00:55:47and that's a big wreck right there.
00:55:49You can see in replay that Field was doing exactly that,
00:55:53following the car ahead of him,
00:55:54and the contact was inadvertent,
00:55:57but in the end, it was Spencer who paid the penalty.
00:56:01Fortunately, no one was hurt in the accident,
00:56:04and for his part, John Field was remorseful.
00:56:08It probably is my fault,
00:56:10because I was focused on staying with DDA phase
00:56:14and really lost concentration of who was beside me at that point,
00:56:18and so I think it's a really eye-opening experience for me
00:56:22to realize that you've got a very slow group of cars,
00:56:26a lot of transition speed,
00:56:28so you've got to be maintaining your peripheral vision
00:56:30a little better than I was at that instance.
00:56:32It's a learning experience for me, for sure.
00:56:34But yeah, you've got to really pay attention to slower cars
00:56:37and keep out of the way as well.
00:56:39There was a full range of sensations
00:56:41that I hadn't experienced before,
00:56:43because most jumps I'd had have been just backing into a wall or so on.
00:56:48My right foot, as the car was spinning,
00:56:52my right foot stuck on the accelerator
00:56:54with the left foot on top of it caught under the brake,
00:56:57so I could not reach the brake,
00:56:59and I could not turn the accelerator off,
00:57:01and every time I swung around,
00:57:03your head was just violently jerking,
00:57:05and it's just around and around and around,
00:57:08wondering when's it going to stop.
00:57:10Finally, I hit the ignition switch, and it slowed down.
00:57:14Dennis Spencer was lucky to escape from the crash
00:57:16without serious injury, thanks in part to HANS.
00:57:20HANS.
00:57:21It stands for Head and Neck Restraint System,
00:57:23developed by racer Jim Downey and Dr. Bob Hubbard.
00:57:27Now, getting back to the issue of overtaking
00:57:29in a race with five different classes on a crowded track,
00:57:32we sampled some driver opinions on the subject
00:57:34and how it might pertain to mid-Ohio.
00:57:36We felt Jack Baldwin summed it up best.
00:57:39You've got to be patient.
00:57:41You've got to get the run.
00:57:42You've got to plan ahead.
00:57:44You've got to see it coming.
00:57:46You've got to really plan the move
00:57:48and get your timing just right.
00:57:50The door opens and closes very quickly here.
00:57:52The door, only on the straightaway is the door open,
00:57:55and you can drive by.
00:57:56Every place else, it's sort of like the open,
00:57:58the door opens, the door shuts.
00:58:00If you can get through it, that one split,
00:58:02you're ready, and you can set it up,
00:58:04and then you're ready to go.
00:58:06You've got to be patient.
00:58:08Every place else, it's a split, you're ready,
00:58:10and you can set it up, and then you can make the pass.
00:58:13Otherwise, you have to wait.
00:58:15And this is where the patience comes in
00:58:17because when you race another car,
00:58:20and he gets by and you don't,
00:58:22and you force the issue, that's when the wreck happens.
00:58:26Fortunately, nothing like that Lime Rock accident
00:58:28thus far today in mid-Ohio.
00:58:30More mid-action taking place.
00:58:31There's a number two Ferrari.
00:58:33Car owner Bobby Brown has taken over for Stanley Dickens
00:58:36with a strange fire in the pit lane.
00:58:38The number 12 has made a change.
00:58:40Mimoskia Torella out.
00:58:41Ralph Kellner's in.
00:58:42There's the 09 Spirited Daytona Chevy Camaro
00:58:45in the American GT category.
00:58:47The crew having a little discussion
00:58:49about whether to refuel the car.
00:58:50There's our leader in Sports Racer 2,
00:58:52Larry Oberto out, Ryan Hanson in.
00:58:54We'll be back.
00:58:57Back at mid-Ohio, under caution
00:58:59in the later stages of the U.S. Road Racing Classic.
00:59:02Here on the Grand American Road Racing Trail,
00:59:05Darren Long.
00:59:10As we get set to go green once again.
00:59:12These GTU cars, by the way,
00:59:14only need to stop once during the race.
00:59:16There's one of our American GT cars.
00:59:18That's the 004 Mustang stopped by the side of the road.
00:59:22Paul Jenkins on the controls.
00:59:24We go back to green flag racing.
00:59:26It's not back to green anyway.
00:59:28That car's sitting right at the front corner
00:59:30right before the carousel.
00:59:32Take a look right there.
00:59:3427.
00:59:35But, as they call it, Ferrari with a Judd motor.
00:59:39Curious decision to go ahead with that car there.
00:59:42Nevertheless, we are racing once again.
00:59:44And here come the Sports Racer leading players.
00:59:48You've got to get quite racing now.
00:59:50Way late in the race, like it is.
00:59:51All the A drivers are back in again
00:59:53to have a change of fresh tires.
00:59:55So this could be a good run.
00:59:57This is the second overall behind the Ferrari Judd.
01:00:02Number 20 Dyson Racing Machine
01:00:04in the hands of Elliott Ford Robinson.
01:00:07Scott Schubot in the number 8 car.
01:00:10Ooh, getting tail happy there
01:00:12is the other Dyson Racing car.
01:00:14And there is where that Ford Mustang is parked.
01:00:17Boy, that is not a good place.
01:00:18That's a really high-speed corner.
01:00:19You see all the guys have to go around
01:00:21the outside of the racetrack to miss that.
01:00:24To see if they allow him to stay in that position.
01:00:26Meanwhile, the race goes on.
01:00:27Headlights on here at Mid-Ohio.
01:00:29A track built by the late Jim Truman.
01:00:31Named as a car owner for Bobby Rahal.
01:00:33He won the Indianapolis 500.
01:00:35Since Jim Truman's passing,
01:00:37the track has been run by his daughter,
01:00:39Michelle Truman.
01:00:40The track is now in its 39th year.
01:00:42Here's Calvin Fish with more.
01:00:45That's right, Bob.
01:00:46Michelle Truman is the president
01:00:47of this wonderful facility here at Mid-Ohio.
01:00:49And Michelle, it must make you very proud
01:00:51to be now in your 39th season of racing
01:00:53here at this racetrack
01:00:54and have another classic sports car weekend.
01:00:57No, we're very excited about this weekend.
01:00:59Mid-Ohio sports car course was
01:01:01built on sports car racing
01:01:03and it has a rich heritage here.
01:01:05And we've got a record field this weekend
01:01:07and it's a perfect way to start the season.
01:01:09You have an exciting summer ahead
01:01:11with the IndyCar weekend
01:01:12and of course the Valvoline run-offs
01:01:13coming here in October once again.
01:01:15But I know as chief instructor,
01:01:16your pride and joy is that driving school.
01:01:18Tell us about that.
01:01:19No, absolutely.
01:01:20The driving school is a very important
01:01:22part of our business
01:01:23and what goes on here behind the scenes
01:01:25on non-race weekends.
01:01:27One final question.
01:01:28We need to talk about that contract
01:01:29for next year.
01:01:30So if we come over here and discuss this.
01:01:33Oh, Calvin.
01:01:34That was very, very rude.
01:01:37Calvin working the DOS, my boy.
01:01:41Oh, dear.
01:01:42I thought she was awfully polite to him
01:01:43considering she's the boss.
01:01:46And he did get off awfully unscathed
01:01:48on that whole conversation, actually.
01:01:50Meanwhile, the battle continues.
01:01:53Having the headlights on
01:01:54is not to help the drivers
01:01:56see the track in front of them
01:01:57as we go yellow once again
01:01:59here in the U.S. road racing classic.
01:02:03I'm not sure exactly what this is for,
01:02:05but I suspect it has something to do
01:02:06with Paul Jenkins and the double zero car
01:02:08still parked out there on the back track,
01:02:11not far from where these cars are right now.
01:02:14So while they get that Ford Mustang
01:02:15pulled off course,
01:02:16we'll take a break.
01:02:23Back at mid-Ohio
01:02:24under the yellow flag once again
01:02:26due to a car stop on the racetrack.
01:02:28It's now clear,
01:02:29and we expect to go back to racing again
01:02:31very shortly
01:02:32as the shadows continue to grow
01:02:34here in mid-Ohio.
01:02:36What has been a beautiful day for racing.
01:02:39Pace car pulling off.
01:02:40James Weaver back in control
01:02:42of the Dyson Racing.
01:02:44Lincoln, Riley, and Scott
01:02:45that he put on hold for this race
01:02:47leads the field away.
01:02:48This car has not been out of the race lead
01:02:51except for pit stop exchanges of position
01:02:53since the race began.
01:02:56And his teammate,
01:02:57that would have forced Robinson
01:02:58to the cushion.
01:02:59If it is a cushion,
01:03:00he's right there behind him.
01:03:01The Dyson cars now are one and two.
01:03:06The field makes its way through
01:03:08on the back stretch.
01:03:09This is the battle for third place,
01:03:11the number eight Scott Schubach.
01:03:12Jack Baldwin on the attack,
01:03:14taking the inside line
01:03:15as they turn uphill on the right-hander.
01:03:18That was a good job right there.
01:03:19Classic slipstream all the way to the break zone
01:03:22and then dive bomb up the inside.
01:03:24Good pass.
01:03:29Baldwin sharing with his car owner,
01:03:31George Robinson.
01:03:32As you look at our field summary,
01:03:33the upper left,
01:03:34Scott Schubach owns that number eight car,
01:03:37sharing with Andy Wallace.
01:03:39Here's another look.
01:03:40See, he sat right behind him
01:03:42as late as he could
01:03:43and popped hard to the inside
01:03:44so he couldn't be blocked out.
01:03:45And he drove real deep in the break zone
01:03:47and didn't get that best thing.
01:03:48Now, that didn't slow down
01:03:49either of those cars,
01:03:50so it's a perfect pass.
01:03:51It didn't hurt too many
01:03:52as far as flexibility.
01:03:54Scott Schubach, a former champion
01:03:56in the days of the
01:03:57International Motorsports Association
01:03:59in the Camel Lights flag.
01:04:01Basically a version of what is now
01:04:03the Sports Racer 2 category.
01:04:05Schubach racing in the Sports Racer
01:04:07that featured big, more open-top sports cars
01:04:11here in mid-Ohio.
01:04:12Baldwin able to open up
01:04:13a couple of car lengths now.
01:04:15Exactly.
01:04:16I would say, look at Jack now
01:04:17that he's got around there.
01:04:18He's got the big speed.
01:04:19I think he senses it's late in the race
01:04:21and he's got to be on the attack.
01:04:23He would like to run down
01:04:24those Dyson cars if possible.
01:04:2774 car has the Judd V10.
01:04:29Schubach's car, the number 8 right there,
01:04:31is a Ford V8-powered machine,
01:04:33so it looks at least
01:04:34between those two examples
01:04:36that the Judd has the legs
01:04:38on the Ford engine
01:04:40as well as the fuel mileage advantage
01:04:42we've been talking about.
01:04:43It's almost surprising now
01:04:44the top three cars are all Riley cars
01:04:46and they're all of an older design
01:04:48compared to that Lola
01:04:50right there in fourth place,
01:04:51which is a brand-new car this year.
01:04:56Over the brow
01:04:57where the front wheels get light.
01:04:59Steering is an adventure.
01:05:01Big, long, double apex right-hander here.
01:05:03The bottom drops out once again
01:05:05as they flash down
01:05:06the back side of the racetrack
01:05:08toward the carousel.
01:05:09Boy, Jack Baldwin
01:05:10putting the pressure on.
01:05:11He's really closed up
01:05:12on the Dyson cars.
01:05:15He's going to make a goal, Chris.
01:05:20Top two rows
01:05:21qualified for this race.
01:05:22The top four cars.
01:05:23That's the leader.
01:05:24Eight tenths in.
01:05:25The race leader is in.
01:05:26The number 16, James Weaver,
01:05:27looking around,
01:05:28tapping himself on the helmet.
01:05:29A problem here.
01:05:32It looks like he doesn't know
01:05:33what the problem is.
01:05:34After dominating this race
01:05:35to this point,
01:05:36an unscheduled stop.
01:05:37Let's get down to John Bisignano.
01:05:40Sixteen in the pits.
01:05:42Definitely a problem with the tire.
01:05:44One of the tires,
01:05:45the magic goes off.
01:05:46They're changing all four.
01:05:48Again, the damage
01:05:49down the right-hand side
01:05:50of the car.
01:05:51This is just exactly
01:05:52what the team did not want
01:05:54to have this late
01:05:55into the event.
01:05:57Of course, there's a little bit
01:05:58of extra time being taken
01:05:59with the right rear
01:06:00for some reason.
01:06:01Right now, all four tires
01:06:03seem in good shape,
01:06:04but they're taking extra time
01:06:05around the rear end of the car.
01:06:07We've got another
01:06:08mechanical problem
01:06:09back here, guys.
01:06:12Engines still running
01:06:13on the car.
01:06:15Looks like the left rear
01:06:16is the problem.
01:06:17Yeah, they shut it down, too.
01:06:18They've told James
01:06:19to shut the motor off.
01:06:20Taking the tire back off,
01:06:21they have a problem.
01:06:25Rambling around,
01:06:26looking at the suspension.
01:06:28Meanwhile,
01:06:29I guess if your
01:06:30leading car has to drop out,
01:06:32it's a good thing that
01:06:33your second car is running
01:06:34in second place.
01:06:35So, Elliot Forbes Robinson,
01:06:36or EFR,
01:06:37as he is known
01:06:38to racing fans
01:06:39all across America,
01:06:40takes over the race lead
01:06:41with Jack Baldwin
01:06:42just behind him in second.
01:06:44And these two guys
01:06:46have raced each other
01:06:47often over the years.
01:06:49Elliot and I won this race.
01:06:50He was my teammate
01:06:51two years ago
01:06:52in that very same car,
01:06:53so I'm sure
01:06:54he'd like to repeat.
01:06:55But it looks like
01:06:56this man, James Weaver,
01:06:57is not going to be
01:06:58a winner today.
01:06:59Oh, dear.
01:07:00They continue to work
01:07:01on the left rear of that car.
01:07:02You see underneath the car
01:07:03that it's up on its jack stand.
01:07:05Weaver stays in the car.
01:07:07Look at Baldwin
01:07:08putting the pressure on him.
01:07:09He's right there.
01:07:10This is going to be
01:07:11a good race here.
01:07:14Nate Jobs,
01:07:15nearly identical
01:07:16to two different team cars.
01:07:20The difference there
01:07:21is the motor and the judge.
01:07:22He can't do that
01:07:23exactly like us.
01:07:24They're the same kind of car.
01:07:26We see an EFR sport
01:07:27can hold off
01:07:28Baldwin's judge.
01:07:29Stay with us.
01:07:31Back at Mid-Ohio
01:07:32where the battle continues
01:07:33between Elliot Forbes Robinson
01:07:35of Dyson Racing Machine
01:07:36and Jack Baldwin
01:07:37in the Robinson Racing
01:07:39number 74.
01:07:41Meanwhile, down in the pit lane,
01:07:42John Bisignano
01:07:43is with Dyson Racing
01:07:44team owner Rob Dyson.
01:07:46Rob,
01:07:47a perfect weekend
01:07:48for the number 16 car
01:07:49until some safety wire
01:07:50took you out.
01:07:51Your feelings?
01:07:54That's racing.
01:07:58It's disappointing
01:07:59we're not done yet though.
01:08:00Elliot's still in front.
01:08:02Hopefully we can pull out
01:08:03a race win at the end,
01:08:04but it is disappointing.
01:08:06It's racing.
01:08:08He'll be back
01:08:09as a winner.
01:08:11Thanks, John.
01:08:12Rob Dyson has certainly
01:08:13seen his share of racing luck
01:08:14both good and bad.
01:08:16Here's the car ownership.
01:08:18This is the inaugural season
01:08:19of Grand American
01:08:20road racing action
01:08:21and as a new series,
01:08:23the Grand Am is always
01:08:24looking for new ways
01:08:25for fans to enjoy
01:08:26their weekend
01:08:27racing experience.
01:08:28Earlier, Calvin Fish
01:08:29took a look
01:08:30at the situation
01:08:31at Mid-Ohio.
01:08:35The Mid-Ohio
01:08:36sports car course
01:08:37is great for the fans.
01:08:38There are so many
01:08:39marvelous viewing areas
01:08:40for all of the fans
01:08:41throughout the weekend
01:08:42to watch the race from,
01:08:43but you can also
01:08:44go to great lengths
01:08:45to ensure there's
01:08:46good interaction
01:08:47between the drivers
01:08:48and the fans
01:08:49throughout the course
01:08:50of the weekend.
01:08:51One example of this
01:08:52is the driver form
01:08:53which is going on
01:08:54right now as we speak.
01:08:55Let's listen in
01:08:56and hear some
01:08:57of the responses.
01:08:58That's why we're
01:08:59supporting this series
01:09:00because it allows us
01:09:01to come here
01:09:02and be competitive.
01:09:03I think that
01:09:04qualifying yesterday,
01:09:05the first three cars
01:09:06qualified within
01:09:07a half a second
01:09:08and, you know,
01:09:09this is,
01:09:10and it's not based on
01:09:11who got the tires
01:09:12and who didn't
01:09:13have the tires.
01:09:14If we can't,
01:09:15if we can't buy
01:09:16the competitive tire
01:09:17or the competitive car
01:09:18or the competitive engine,
01:09:19then how can we
01:09:20be competitive?
01:09:21And that's the,
01:09:22that's the,
01:09:23that's the question
01:09:24we have to ask ourselves
01:09:25when we go
01:09:26into this thing.
01:09:27Yeah, the,
01:09:28I think the driver
01:09:29forms are great.
01:09:30It gives people
01:09:31a chance to talk
01:09:32to drivers
01:09:33out of the cars
01:09:34and a lot of
01:09:35sports car fans
01:09:36are interested
01:09:37in the technical
01:09:38aspects of the sport
01:09:39and it's,
01:09:40it's unparalleled
01:09:41and I think
01:09:42it's a great
01:09:43opportunity
01:09:44for drivers
01:09:45to get
01:09:46a chance
01:09:47to get
01:09:48a chance
01:09:49to get
01:09:50a chance
01:09:51to get
01:09:52a chance
01:09:53to get
01:09:54a chance
01:09:55to get
01:09:56a chance
01:09:57to get
01:09:58a chance
01:09:59to get
01:10:00a chance
01:10:01to get
01:10:02a chance
01:10:03to get
01:10:04a chance
01:10:05to get
01:10:06a chance
01:10:07to get
01:10:08a chance
01:10:09to get
01:10:10a chance
01:10:11to get
01:10:12a chance
01:10:13to get
01:10:14a chance
01:10:15to get
01:10:16a chance
01:10:17to get
01:10:18a chance
01:10:19to get
01:10:20a chance
01:10:21to get
01:10:22a chance
01:10:23to get
01:10:24a chance
01:10:25to get
01:10:26a chance
01:10:27to get
01:10:28a chance
01:10:29to get
01:10:30a chance
01:10:31to get
01:10:32a chance
01:10:33to get
01:10:34a chance
01:10:35to get
01:10:36a chance
01:10:37to get
01:10:38a chance
01:10:39to get
01:10:40a chance
