00:00:30Round 2 of the Grand American Road Racing Championship was run in the dry heat of a desert night in Phoenix, as the Robinson Racing and Foreman, Wiley and Scott Judge ran down the pack from behind to take the surprise win.
00:00:44But, today, the series will run in the tropical heat of the South Florida afternoon, here at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
00:01:00Hi everybody, and welcome to Homestead-Miami Speedway for Grand Am's next L250.
00:01:16I'm Greg Kramer, joining me in the booth is David Hobbs.
00:01:18David, people are talking this week and still about that great performance by Irv here and Jack Baldwin.
00:01:23Well, it was a tremendous run. They were pushed to the back of the grid, and they came through there, hit the big start of Phoenix.
00:01:28Snatched that win away. It was a great run, and it was no fluke, as they're near the front end of the grid today.
00:01:32Matter of fact, qualified in third. A great performance.
00:01:35Joining us in the pits once again, John Bisignano and Sandy Hang, and Biz has caught up with the Informix team. Biz?
00:01:40Well, Greg and David, the story of this team can be summed up by the full-page ad that was taken by their entrance sponsor, Informix Software.
00:01:49It sums up both their Phoenix success and their hard work here in Homestead.
00:01:53Brad Reeds refused to give up, overcome adversity, work harder, weigh harder, win.
00:01:58That's exactly what they did by a great drive through the field, Jack Baldwin, in Phoenix.
00:02:03But here, only two-tenths of a second off pole in third-place qualifying position.
00:02:07A win here should be a little bit easier than it was in Phoenix.
00:02:10Well, it's going to be a little easier because, you know, we're starting up front instead of starting in the back.
00:02:14But it's a testament to the team and the wonderful organization George Robinson has put together here.
00:02:20And, you know, with a little luck, you know, I'm not saying it's going to be easier, but we're looking forward to it.
00:02:27Well, the ad says hard work is what it takes, and they know how to get that done.
00:02:30Again, working with me this weekend is Sandy Hang, who has another fast story from the back of the grid.
00:02:37The fastest car in qualifying was sent to near the back of the pack. Why? An irregular air box.
00:02:43But piloting Phil Crichton's Ford is a new cover to the series.
00:02:46Oliver Gavin, it's his first race in the United States, his first trip to the United States, and we really have some Florida heat.
00:02:54How's a Brit going to deal with that here today?
00:02:56Well, I'm not too sure whether it's going to be too much of a problem, but I suppose us Brits aren't used to necessarily being this hot all of the time.
00:03:04So, other cars reasonably easy to drive, so I think that it won't be too much of a problem, but we'll just have to see.
00:03:11I mean, this is my first sports car race, so like I say, we'll just have to see how it goes.
00:03:15Well, good luck and welcome. His car is one of the three fastest. They are separated by eight hundredths of a point.
00:03:21And we are proud to announce a new award for the pole sitter, the Informix Pole.
00:03:25And collecting that check is with my colleague, John Bisignano.
00:03:29Model Baldy is one of the few drivers who has the bragging rights to winning the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
00:03:39He loves the banking around Homestead here, he loves his Judd V10, and he loves his Doran Ferrari 333 chassis.
00:03:46But one thing they might not love so much is all the competition surrounding you on this grid, Maro.
00:03:52No, on the contrary, I like it very much. It was very close, the qualifying three cars were in one hundredth of a second.
00:04:01And I think the race will be very, very close, and that's what we look for.
00:04:06Very hard races, very close, and we enjoy that.
00:04:10Well, an awful lot of confidence from our pole sitter.
00:04:13And now, Sandy Haying with the fastest sedan on this Homestead grid.
00:04:19The Saleen Mustang was quickest in the GTO class, but they had their share of frustration getting there.
00:04:24Just look at this car. You can see the cosmetic damage.
00:04:28What happened? Well, Ron Johnson was practicing and the throttle stuck.
00:04:32They got that fixed, but owner Steve Saleen is here now. It's kind of a poker game.
00:04:36We had a rain this morning, overcast skies now. Strategy, what are you preparing for?
00:04:42Well, I still have my sunglasses on, so I think we're hoping for a dry and sunny race.
00:04:47But if it does rain on the deal, we're prepared to go to wet tires and a different setup.
00:04:52Have you done testing in the rain?
00:04:54Yes, we actually have a pretty good setup that we're happy with it if it does rain.
00:04:57So I think we're pretty well prepared for whatever happens.
00:05:01Okay, thanks Steve. Best of luck to you.
00:05:03We'll also be following another story here at Greg and David, and that is they've had a brake pedal that's been sticking.
00:05:08A little bit of flex in there. They've been trying to work that out.
00:05:11An intermittent problem, and hopefully that Gremlin won't be back for this team today.
00:05:16Well, Sandy, they continue to develop that brand new car.
00:05:19Those kind of Gremlins are going to be part of the program for a while, but it sure is fast.
00:05:22And some of the other companies right by here at Homestead Airport.
00:05:25We'll be back for our starting line.
00:05:32Grand American Road Racing from Homestead-Miami Speedway is brought to you by BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
00:05:41And by Informix, your new way to wet.
00:05:51You can see the big billowy clouds there, David.
00:05:53It's been heavy rain this morning. One short 30-minute sprint race.
00:05:57This track is pretty green.
00:05:59Exactly. That means the track is green.
00:06:01But, of course, it's pretty hot, so they're soon going to put some temperature into those tires and get that grip back.
00:06:05Very soon, indeed. In fact, the grand marshal for this great event is Hurley Haywood, the all-time leader in endurance wins.
00:06:11He's standing by with those famous words.
00:06:14Gentlemen, start your engines.
00:06:19Famous words, indeed, from a true legend in this type of equipment.
00:06:22It's time for our Informix starting grid, and a great line-up it is.
00:06:26That new Doran Judd on pole off one of Dyson's cars.
00:06:30The winners in Phoenix 3rd, and Dyson Team's Lincoln machine in 4th.
00:06:34Then the RISI Competizione Ferrari, the Intersport Racing, one of the Lolas.
00:06:38Then a Chevy Riley and Scott, and a Mazda Kudzu.
00:06:41Then we look at some of the Sports Racer 2 machines, and that Celine Allen, handling quickest and qualifying in GTO.
00:06:48We're going to show you the rest of the field as well.
00:06:50There's some of the GTU competitors.
00:06:52Lots of different classes, and the American GT Championship as well.
00:06:56Five different classes being contested.
00:06:58It's going to make this race very exciting indeed.
00:07:00And there, one of the faster cars, that hybrid racing machine, the Simmo entry, sits with no time.
00:07:06And one of the American GT cars as well, starting well at the back of the pack.
00:07:10Oh, and that's David Bernard.
00:07:13He's one of the last second drivers here in the Tetford, Riley and Scott Lincoln.
00:07:18And they were not able to roll off of the grid, David.
00:07:20They're going to start dead last.
00:07:21His first big opportunity in one of these big sports cars.
00:07:23So that will be disappointing for David.
00:07:25We've seen him before in Formula 4, 2000, and other classes racing here in the States.
00:07:28He's from Australia.
00:07:29Let's take a look now at the track map there.
00:07:31You see the 11 turns, obviously dead flat, no elevation changes.
00:07:34Going into Turn 1, probably the fastest entry that you've got.
00:07:37You've got to be very careful going through 2 and 3.
00:07:39They're pretty slippery.
00:07:404 and 5, you've got to make a good shot out of 5, because you overtake going into 6.
00:07:44Make a good shot of 7 as well, because another good braking spot is 8.
00:07:48Let's go on board now with Jack Baldwin here.
00:07:51As he goes through Turn 1 and 2.
00:07:53This is Turn 2, tightens up a little bit.
00:07:55Really, 2 and 3 almost turn into a big double apex left-hander.
00:07:59Then you've got this little right-hander.
00:08:01Now, you want to come up well here, because this left flick really is nothing.
00:08:04Because you want to really get some speed up down here.
00:08:07As you come down to Turn 5, where you might be able to do some out-braking on the inside here.
00:08:11But he's not really close enough to get with it.
00:08:13He's just quite there.
00:08:15Turn 6, rather.
00:08:17Now, Turn 7.
00:08:19Another one where you really want to be right under the wing of that car.
00:08:22Because as you come into Turn 8, it's a golden opportunity to get by something
00:08:25before you get up onto the banking.
00:08:27And they're very fast back straight.
00:08:29Of course, unlike the circuit last year, they now go through NASCAR's turn.
00:08:33Our turns 10 and 11 would be NASCAR's turn 3 and 4.
00:08:36So, very fast.
00:08:37By the time they get around to Turn 1, they're really quick.
00:08:40Speaking of quick, let's take a look at the pole-sitters in each of the categories here.
00:08:43What a lap in that Judd-Doran, a Ferrari, that they took the V12 out, put the V10 Judd in.
00:08:48And once the development rolls and cleared up, that car has proven to be awfully fast.
00:08:52The SR2 class there was right behind him.
00:08:55The GTO not very far behind him with Terry Borchner.
00:08:57So, we've got a lot of competition here with a lot of different classes,
00:09:00which, of course, makes it very tough on the drivers in these super-fast sports cars
00:09:04when they come up on the GCU, GTO, and the ACC.
00:09:07You've got to weave your way through traffic. It's not easy.
00:09:10On board momentarily there with the Baldwin-Herb team.
00:09:13That's the car that qualified third we were talking about.
00:09:16And we've got another on board that we'll be showing you as well.
00:09:18It should be a good one. He's deep in the pack.
00:09:20But now, Pace Car is in.
00:09:22And we are under the control of Mauro Baldi.
00:09:24He's going to bring it around for the start of the next TEL 250 here at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
00:09:28We are green!
00:09:30Big move there by John Fields in the Lola.
00:09:33Didn't look like he was going to be able to get it done.
00:09:35We're on board now with number 81 Mike Fitzgerald in the GW Motorsports.
00:09:38And there comes that car that was almost dead last.
00:09:40The number 8 entry who had problems early.
00:09:43And that's got cheap out. But remember Oliver Gavin.
00:09:45He's going to be starting that car.
00:09:47And Oliver already concerned about the heat.
00:09:49Although the sun doesn't seem to be out right at the moment.
00:09:51Mauro Baldi pulling away there.
00:09:53And that's Josh Laurin's car.
00:09:55And a great start by that third car.
00:09:57And you screen the red.
00:09:59The only Ferrari, Ralph Kellner, has qualified in fifth.
00:10:02And on the start, jumping forth.
00:10:04And his team has gone around Jack Baldwin.
00:10:06And that now has put him up into a great third place.
00:10:10There's John Fields in that blue and red Lola.
00:10:13Pushing hard there.
00:10:15Pick up that sixth spot.
00:10:17Already the Baldi.
00:10:19Oh, look at this. Big move there.
00:10:21That's the TRW entry of Bolt.
00:10:24Trying to go down the inside.
00:10:27That's one of those spots I was telling you about.
00:10:29Going into that turn 8.
00:10:31Pull up onto the main straightaway here for the first time.
00:10:34Now, instead of going back into the infield,
00:10:36they've got these very fast left-handers here.
00:10:38Puts a lot of heat in that right-side tire.
00:10:41These cars are really going to be set up for this.
00:10:43Of course, at the same time, they've got to go through those tight infield corners.
00:10:46So it's very difficult to set these cars up.
00:10:49They're very fast.
00:10:50Look at the engine in turn 1.
00:10:52They're doing 190 miles an hour.
00:10:54They go into turn 1 and go on a break.
00:10:56That's incredibly quick.
00:10:57And right now, Mauro Baldi not only maintains the front,
00:11:00he is starting to open it up on the rest of the field.
00:11:02We'll be right back from Homestead, Miami.
00:11:06Welcome back to Homestead, Miami Speedway.
00:11:08Good luck there at James Weaver driving the lead Dyson machine,
00:11:11the Riley & Scott Ford, sponsored by Deptford.
00:11:14And a big move there, Baldwin.
00:11:16He dove down to the inside of Ralph Kellner's in that race.
00:11:19He comes out as the only Ferrari.
00:11:20And, David, I think he surprised Kellner.
00:11:22I think he surprised Kellner.
00:11:24There's a lot who had already passed him once.
00:11:25That was a great move by Jack Baldwin.
00:11:27Absolutely perfectly executed into that turn 8.
00:11:30That's where we're going to see a lot of passing this afternoon,
00:11:32as they now hit those high-banked NASCAR's turn 3 and 4,
00:11:37like I said, putting a lot of heat into those tires.
00:11:42There is a good look at young David Benard from Australia,
00:11:46who, of course, had that problem with his band-acting push-starting car
00:11:49to get him to fire by the time that happened in Dreadnought Way.
00:11:52And he is loggering up from the back, currently, I think,
00:11:54running in the 9th spot.
00:11:55Already up to 9th, and another of his victories coming up here
00:11:58on the SR2 car that qualified 2nd.
00:12:02David is looking to try and make a pass on him sooner or later.
00:12:07Going through turn 2, 3, 4, and 5.
00:12:11A little left-hand flick.
00:12:13Down to 6th.
00:12:15The Lincoln engine should have just a little bit more grunt.
00:12:17He goes down the inside there.
00:12:20Great pass.
00:12:22Right to the SR2 car.
00:12:25Pretty steady on the SR2 car.
00:12:27A little bit of hesitation on braking there.
00:12:30David Benard now up to 8th overall.
00:12:32A little bit loose.
00:12:33A little bit loose, yeah, on the SR2 car.
00:12:35Now, you mentioned how key it is to get out of turn 4 and 5 well
00:12:39to be able to get a run.
00:12:40And, obviously, with the engine, that's going to make it a lot easier.
00:12:43But if we take a look at that pass, that was executed spectacularly.
00:12:46Absolutely tremendously.
00:12:47That's the Nissan engine below there that he's overtaking.
00:12:50It looks just a little bit light going through there,
00:12:52because the SR2 car, with these long straights,
00:12:54they want to run them pretty feathered out.
00:12:56So, they may give up some downforce so they get some straightaway speed.
00:13:00Go back to the front and take a look at Baldy.
00:13:02First overall and first in the sports racing category.
00:13:05You're watching Benard.
00:13:06A couple of years ago, we watched David Benard in the USF 2000 car,
00:13:09when he broke his rear wing.
00:13:11He went on an unbelievable drive and actually held on to the wind
00:13:16after getting hit in that car.
00:13:18At which point, some of his defenders protested because he'd lost his wing.
00:13:21So, I thought this was pretty tight.
00:13:24Look at this now.
00:13:25He's really closing in on Mauro Baldy.
00:13:28Mauro Baldy, another excellent one-to-one driver.
00:13:31He's starting to appear now.
00:13:33You guys are going to get that for rank 200 miles.
00:13:35Well, that's 230, I find.
00:13:38There's the blue and yellow number 8 of Oliver Gavin,
00:13:41the young Englishman who is putting a lot of pressure now on Helmers.
00:13:44They started almost dead last, David.
00:13:46And what a drive by Gavin.
00:13:48Absolutely tremendous.
00:13:50And he did say at the beginning of the race
00:13:52that the heat might get to him, being a Brit,
00:13:54not used to this tremendous Florida heat.
00:13:56But he's certainly doing a good job in his early stage of the race.
00:13:59He's right behind Ralph Kellner now in the Ferrari.
00:14:01Losing a little bit of ground there to the last turn 11.
00:14:05Today's maybe not quite as good.
00:14:11Oh, boy.
00:14:12That's up as they weave through there.
00:14:14Well, he closes up big time under braking though.
00:14:17They say that Lola, with that sort of unique-looking bubble on the nose,
00:14:21as he develops, he cancels the air much more effectively,
00:14:24gives a better downforce, and that means better braking.
00:14:27Oh, he's got a run going.
00:14:29A lot of down to those tight corners.
00:14:31This is again down to that turn 6.
00:14:33Terrific.
00:14:35Great pass there down the inside of Kellner.
00:14:37Only Kellner's got a problem.
00:14:39He's dropping back to the field just a little bit here.
00:14:42So Oliver Gavin picks up another spot.
00:14:45Now he's off in hot pursuit of the judge in front of him.
00:14:50Right there, though, Gavin took the run.
00:14:52I think that lap car slowed up Gavin just a little bit.
00:14:56Kellner took a definite run, but now Gavin hits the hammer down.
00:14:59We were talking about the downforce.
00:15:01That allows you to brake deeper and allows you to get to the throttle a little sooner
00:15:04and enter the throttle.
00:15:05All right, side-by-side battle for the lead, though.
00:15:08Weaver down to the inside of Baldi.
00:15:10David, they're heading down into that high-speed turn 1.
00:15:13Still side-by-side.
00:15:15Mauro Baldi, I'm ashamed Weaver had the line there,
00:15:17but Mauro Baldi went to the outside.
00:15:19Always a bit of a risky move, though,
00:15:21because that's where the rolled-up rubber starts to accumulate,
00:15:23although it is pretty early in the race.
00:15:25But Weaver still really pounding Mauro Baldi to the lead.
00:15:29You talked there about getting through this series of corners,
00:15:32and it looked like Weaver had a much better line into it.
00:15:36Trying to, no, going to go down the inside at 6.
00:15:39That didn't work out.
00:15:40Down through this 7.
00:15:41Can he come up here really well and launch himself down
00:15:44and make it a go at turn 8 there?
00:15:47This last left-hander.
00:15:49A great battle for the lead here at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
00:15:52Traffic going to play a role, and nobody.
00:15:54Wide traffic late game for Weaver.
00:16:00We are back at Homestead-Miami Speedway,
00:16:02and the battle for third continues to rage.
00:16:04And right there again, the move.
00:16:06Oliver Gavin looks to the inside of Baldwin.
00:16:08They may have even touched.
00:16:10Boy, that was close as they went through that tight turn 3,
00:16:13this little 5, the sweeper here.
00:16:15Traffic in the way again.
00:16:16Traffic is going to play a big part in this afternoon's proceedings.
00:16:19It always does.
00:16:20Down the inside of 6 there.
00:16:21Great move there by Oliver Gavin.
00:16:24And traffic involved as well as they go past Michael Cohen
00:16:27in that ADT car.
00:16:32Coming after here, Gavin.
00:16:33And, oh, the number 84 tried to move out of the way,
00:16:36give him a little room to run.
00:16:38That was the Koma Racing entry, and he did so,
00:16:41but I think it messed up Baldwin a little bit.
00:16:43He was thinking perhaps about a run.
00:16:45Let's go back and take a look at that pass.
00:16:46Talk about decisiveness.
00:16:47Boy, it was decisive, wasn't it?
00:16:49It came off 5.
00:16:50It was significantly behind as it came down to the 6.
00:16:52I think Baldwin actually got slightly unsighted by the 18 car there.
00:16:56Wasn't quite sure, but Oliver Gavin just comes right down the inside
00:17:00into 6.
00:17:01A great pass.
00:17:02It just blew by him.
00:17:03Gavin now working some lap traffic, and there is Baldwin.
00:17:07And, you know, down in pit lane is somebody who is intensely interested
00:17:10in this battle, wishing probably more than anything
00:17:12that he could be a part of it.
00:17:13It's the owner of the Informix, Riley and Scott Judd.
00:17:16That's George Robinson, and Sandy Hank has found him in pit lane.
00:17:20Sandy?
00:17:21I see you're not in the cockpit.
00:17:22How are you feeling?
00:17:23I'm feeling a lot better right now.
00:17:26Last week was a little rough,
00:17:28and I'll be back for the next race in Lime Rock.
00:17:32David, he must have had some mixed feelings at Phoenix.
00:17:34To see his car win had to be great, but to not be able to drive,
00:17:37that didn't fare well.
00:17:38Well, of course, he must have had some mixed feelings too,
00:17:40because Irv Herr didn't even arrive there until the Saturday morning
00:17:43of race day and just had a few laps on that Saturday morning
00:17:46before the race.
00:17:47And, obviously, he's doing pretty well here.
00:17:49Jack Baldwin at the moment fighting really well against Oliver Gavin,
00:17:52although that wasn't a great move.
00:17:54Traffic there, slowing car.
00:17:56Nice point by, though, by the driver of that Sports Racer 2 category machine.
00:18:00And, you know, you're watching Oliver Gavin.
00:18:02If you're not real familiar with the game in Europe,
00:18:05especially in Britain, of course, in Formula 3000,
00:18:08and I think it's Formula 2 in Britain,
00:18:10he has been an absolute standout.
00:18:12And, I mean, that's one step below Formula 1.
00:18:14The guy can drive.
00:18:15He certainly can drive.
00:18:16Formula 1 was his target, but he hasn't quite made it yet.
00:18:19He's doing a good job this afternoon there.
00:18:21We see that battle for the lead still between Mauro Bolli and James Weaver.
00:18:25Weaver got trapped a little bit behind that lap car,
00:18:27but that car did an awesome job of moving out of the way.
00:18:30Now, Weaver's going to try and duck down underneath one of these cars.
00:18:33No!
00:18:34The door got slammed rather firmly by the number 52 Safina Racing BMW.
00:18:39That hurt Weaver a lot.
00:18:40Alberto at the wheel of that car.
00:18:42Now he's moved over now and given him plenty of racing room.
00:18:45But Weaver still has to get by.
00:18:47And here is a look at our 13th overall driver, comfortably first in the GTO category,
00:18:52Terry Burscheler.
00:18:53He had a pretty comfortable win in Phoenix.
00:18:55This is the new variant of the Saleem Mustang, much wider.
00:18:58It's a wide-body car.
00:19:00We heard earlier when owner Steve Saleem was talking to Sandy Hinknader,
00:19:03he talked about the fact that they're having some teething problems,
00:19:06but this is a brand-new car.
00:19:08I mean, that's going to happen.
00:19:10Well, it may be a brand-new car, but A, it's an extremely good-looking car,
00:19:13and B, it's a very, very fast car.
00:19:16We are leading the GTO category at the moment,
00:19:18and a clear on the pole, and a clear pole-sitter and winner in Phoenix
00:19:22just a couple of weeks ago.
00:19:23So this is a car to take seriously.
00:19:25And, of course, Terry Burscheler, very used to driving this type of machine,
00:19:28and does it very, very well.
00:19:31And he is one of the quicker, perhaps more underrated drivers in the circuit.
00:19:34Great to see him riding it, giving him all the motorbikes he deserves.
00:19:38We'll be back.
00:19:42Welcome back, everybody.
00:19:43And the battle for the lead continues to be very intense.
00:19:46There's number 27, Baldy, in the Ferrari Doran Judd,
00:19:50chased by James Weaver.
00:19:52Very close.
00:19:53Weaver staying with him in track.
00:19:54Oh, and a big lurid slide by Chris Bingham
00:19:56in the number 17 hybrid racing, Ford, Riley, and Scott.
00:20:00Yeah, that was a lurid slide going around that turn 6.
00:20:03So he's obviously got a bit of trouble with his aerodynamics
00:20:06or his tires going down.
00:20:08He's now about to be passed by Jack Baldwin.
00:20:11But this is a tremendous race for the lead here
00:20:13between two very, very, very experienced drivers.
00:20:17That's number 84 in the KOMA Racing entry,
00:20:20and big problems at the front.
00:20:22Looks like they have made contact with something.
00:20:25Big-time contact, too.
00:20:27Big damage to the car.
00:20:28McNeil, the starting driver.
00:20:30Meanwhile, there's Weaver down to the inside.
00:20:32Now, we saw this earlier.
00:20:33It looks like Baldy's got the nose to hit again.
00:20:35Baldy's good on the high side.
00:20:37Now, is it going to work again?
00:20:39Down to that turn 2, and he still holds on.
00:20:41That is a difficult thing to do,
00:20:43but Weaver is still there on the inside.
00:20:45They're coming to 2 and 3.
00:20:47Now, last time, Weaver went wide here,
00:20:50and he's doing it again.
00:20:51This might help him on the exit of 4 and 5.
00:20:53Now, that 4 is not a good place to be on the outside,
00:20:55but I wouldn't have thought it was a great place
00:20:57to be on the outside going through 1 and 2.
00:20:59But, boy, he seems to make it up.
00:21:01Weaver weaving around there behind.
00:21:03Oh, Baldy, but he can't make it happen
00:21:05as they go into that turn 6.
00:21:07Then, wow, there's the 84 car.
00:21:09Very dangerous place there right on the exit
00:21:11as they come swooping through out of 6 and 7.
00:21:14McNeil obviously trying to do the right thing,
00:21:17Now, Weaver showed the nose,
00:21:19but, you know, the Ferrari,
00:21:21if there was a weak point,
00:21:22there was always a little light on downforce.
00:21:24His number 12, Kellner,
00:21:26has brought the really competitive Pioni Ferrari in.
00:21:28They say the Ferrari was still light on downforce,
00:21:30but this Doran car, they modified the bodywork, too.
00:21:32But this time, Weaver's got the nose in front.
00:21:36Boy, just, they were harsh with the traffic
00:21:38as they went in.
00:21:39Wow, look at this, more traffic.
00:21:40Oh!
00:21:43Wow!
00:22:01Kellner's in.
00:22:04Oh, that's what happened.
00:22:06Double contact.
00:22:13They tried to help.
00:22:26So the battle continues,
00:22:28and Weaver speaking of hearts,
00:22:29his is hitting the throat with that.
00:22:31But as I said, very few people
00:22:33are as aggressive in traffic as James Weaver,
00:22:35although Baldi is showing that he's willing to go
00:22:38and hammering it home right with Weaver.
00:22:40Again, when Weaver getting out of the turns,
00:22:42incredibly well, runs right up on Baldi,
00:22:44has good momentum and drops down to third side.
00:22:47Well, the Ford engine with a bit more capacity
00:22:49probably got more grunt coming off those slow turns,
00:22:51but when it gets to high speed,
00:22:53the Doran car, which was a Ferrari,
00:22:56now it's just the V10 engine,
00:22:58seems to have a little bit of an edge,
00:23:00doesn't it, coming to that turn one?
00:23:02It looks like Weaver's finally managed
00:23:04to get enough daylight to make
00:23:06a sticky transition to that off-road race.
00:23:11Well, it wasn't as if James Weaver was going to give up,
00:23:13you can always count on that,
00:23:15but we were talking about the fact that
00:23:17Riley and Scott have always gone with a great downforce.
00:23:19Kevin Doran, you can see, really worked hard
00:23:21in what they took to get on that car,
00:23:23and also did some work on the body work,
00:23:25trying to generate a little more downforce
00:23:27without affecting the drag too much,
00:23:29and it seems to at least be better,
00:23:31but obviously Weaver, coming out of those turns,
00:23:35absolutely tremendous work,
00:23:37the way he slides through there too,
00:23:39a lot of downforce on these Riley and Scott chassis,
00:23:41which James Weaver's been driving for,
00:23:43Rob Dyson now for many years,
00:23:45it must be ten years now that he's been driving for Dyson,
00:23:48great combination, they obviously get on well with each other.
00:23:51The number eight car now,
00:23:53coming up in the pack,
00:23:55looking now to get around Jack Baldwin
00:23:57for that third spot overall.
00:23:59Baldwin now really bottled up in some traffic there,
00:24:02as they come up onto the back straightaway here.
00:24:04That meat in the sandwich trick
00:24:06only works every now and then,
00:24:08you can't expect to pull it off every time.
00:24:11And number 20, David Bernard,
00:24:13brings the team, Riley and Scott,
00:24:15Lincoln down onto pit lane,
00:24:17and seems to be coming in rather slowly.
00:24:20Rather slowly.
00:24:24Nothing too over the wall,
00:24:26car getting up on the air jack,
00:24:28going after tires,
00:24:31so pit stop, at least for the team car,
00:24:34to your new race leader
00:24:36here at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
00:24:38Be right back.
00:24:42Welcome back everybody,
00:24:44good battle unfolding right now
00:24:46in the GTU division for first place,
00:24:48number 66, Kevin Buckler,
00:24:50in the racer's group Porsche,
00:24:52right there, hangs on,
00:24:54but he's definitely got some pressure
00:24:56from Mike Fitzgerald driving the pure image
00:24:58right behind, good battle there,
00:25:00as they head up back onto the bank,
00:25:02and you can see some of the quicker cars coming on.
00:25:04Speaking of quicker cars,
00:25:06we saw David Bernard down the pit,
00:25:08Vince, what's happening?
00:25:10The mechanics have pushed David Bernard's number 20
00:25:12behind the wall, and you can see
00:25:14the evidence of what the problem is,
00:25:16the car was absolutely full of rocks and debris,
00:25:18they have to clean everything out of here,
00:25:20especially around those all-important radiators
00:25:22and brakes before the car is safe to run.
00:25:24Tough break for the young Australian.
00:25:28Tough break indeed, there's another good look
00:25:30at Kevin Buckler in that racer's group Porsche,
00:25:32and David can run off here, you can see,
00:25:34it's South Florida, it's dry,
00:25:36there's a lot of gravel offline,
00:25:38and boy, it can definitely do some damage.
00:25:52Now Lincoln, Riley, and Scott
00:25:54in the hands of Weaver has been very quick
00:25:56and fairly effective in traffic,
00:25:58as you see, he's gone around now
00:26:00the list of Doran Judd,
00:26:02of 27 Baldi, and that puts him
00:26:04now into the lead,
00:26:06so James Weaver out front,
00:26:08Baldi in second, and they're continuing
00:26:10to work some of that traffic,
00:26:12you're going to see them catch it up here fairly quickly,
00:26:14heading into turns 10 and 11, or NASCAR 3 and 4.
00:26:16These two cars, incredibly evenly matched,
00:26:18we saw that incredible dice
00:26:20for the lead just a few laps back
00:26:22when they took it and re-took it.
00:26:24Now this corner,
00:26:26the last corner, number 11,
00:26:28it looked like Mauro Baldi had the high line
00:26:30a little bit quicker, and James Weaver
00:26:32kept trying to go underneath him into turns 1 and 2,
00:26:34finally managed to pull it off,
00:26:36he's got just a little bit of a lead now, but boy,
00:26:38it's not much.
00:26:40You can see Weaver throwing that car around
00:26:42quite handily as well, good look there,
00:26:44that's your leader in the A-GT, the American GT
00:26:46category, the Daytona Mitsubishi
00:26:48Cat Country Camaro, Craig Conway
00:26:50starting that car, he'll be turning it over to Doug Goad,
00:26:52the pit stop's coming up,
00:26:54but great run indeed for that car,
00:26:56they've been fast all season long.
00:26:58They have had a good run a couple of weeks ago
00:27:00in Philly,
00:27:02very good run in fact.
00:27:04There you see him swooping through the infield
00:27:06turn, so there's a car slowing down,
00:27:08it looks like the Ferrari number 12 of Ralph Kellner's
00:27:10obviously got some sort of
00:27:12problem.
00:27:14Came back up to speed, oh, number 74
00:27:16in the pit, pit stop starting
00:27:18to happen right now, Baldwin has brought
00:27:20the car in from eccentricity, down into
00:27:22pit lane, and Kellner's slowing again,
00:27:24looks like he got him motivated, David, but he is not
00:27:26running at speed. Running right around the bottom
00:27:28of the track there, obviously going to be coming in the
00:27:30pit shortly.
00:27:32At my first thought was perhaps fuel,
00:27:34but then he was able to get it going again,
00:27:36so you wouldn't think it'd be fuel, but
00:27:38there's Baldwin, in the pits, quick
00:27:40tire change, fuel,
00:27:42and he'll be heading out right as Kellner
00:27:44is about to bring that car in. Baldwin
00:27:46apparently, yep, he stays on board.
00:27:48There goes a tear-off,
00:27:50off right there,
00:27:52boy, that was a great invention to come along
00:27:54for all the cockpit cars.
00:27:56They certainly were a great invention, there's no doubt about it,
00:27:58so Jack Baldwin's side can make us
00:28:00at least two points
00:28:02on this hot day,
00:28:04down here in Huntsman, here comes Ralph Kellner's
00:28:06into the pits slowly,
00:28:08could be anyone, out of fuel,
00:28:10out of gears, out of engine.
00:28:12Now they're going
00:28:14after it, the mechanic taking a look,
00:28:16oh, he may have a little off-course
00:28:18discussion, the way they're looking at the spoilers.
00:28:20Well, of course, earlier on he had that run-in
00:28:22with the 84 car,
00:28:24did quite a bit of damage to the other car, not so much
00:28:26to his at the time, but maybe it's coming back now.
00:28:28Okay, he's got
00:28:30some problem at the rear of the car,
00:28:32certainly, as they, uh, I don't know that
00:28:34they had the right tires ready.
00:28:36They didn't put much fuel
00:28:38did they?
00:28:40That was not a pit stop
00:28:42of precision, certainly, apparently
00:28:44Frost's ideas
00:28:46happening as he brought that car in, and then
00:28:48spending a long time on pit lane, meanwhile,
00:28:50Maro Baldi, second overall, second in
00:28:52the sports racer category,
00:28:54continues to try and chase
00:28:56down Weaver.
00:28:58Well, Weaver pulled it away a little bit, but he
00:29:00certainly hasn't pulled away much, they come into that
00:29:02tight turn, three and four
00:29:04sections, long, long left-hander.
00:29:06It seems like Weaver's car's gone a little
00:29:08loose, there's a lot more slide out of his car
00:29:10than Baldi's right now. Because his track
00:29:12gets hot and wears his tires down.
00:29:14As you get off-line, of course, you can start to find
00:29:16rubber, rolled up rubber, there you see some of it
00:29:18flying around in the top of the screen there.
00:29:20So it gets more and more difficult to overtake
00:29:22the slower cars as you go off-line.
00:29:24And Weaver just flips a little bit
00:29:26of debris on the track, no problem there.
00:29:28Kelmers continues to stay in pit lane
00:29:30as they take a look at the front end and the spoiler
00:29:32of that machine. Here at
00:29:34Homestead-Miami Speedway, pit stops
00:29:36are coming, Gavin's bringing the number 8 in.
00:29:42Grand American Road Racing continues
00:29:44at Homestead, and there is
00:29:46the number 8, that is the
00:29:48Berkeley Consulting-Philip Creighton Motorsports
00:29:50entry, Oliver Gavin, the starting driver
00:29:52of that car, and they made the stop, and
00:29:54still were able to come out with
00:29:56Jack Baldwin, and that is still the battle for fourth.
00:29:58These two even with stops, David, and they're
00:30:00going incredibly quickly. Absolutely, incredibly
00:30:02quickly, of course, going quicker than ever now, they've got some nice
00:30:04new tires on, and of course, all set for another
00:30:06whole stint of gas here, so
00:30:08a very close battle here for that fourth spot.
00:30:10Jack Baldwin put on a great display.
00:30:12Jack Baldwin, of course, a
00:30:14GTU winner in Interracial,
00:30:16way back, you know, when I was still a young
00:30:18guy. And here he is, still battling
00:30:20it out with the best of them. Former Trans-Am
00:30:22champion as well, and
00:30:24oh, that's the number 5, VASF
00:30:26home improvement, Celine
00:30:28Allen Speed Lab Mustang, and it looks like
00:30:30Borchler just got it wrong, looped it
00:30:32in the infield. Well, boy, and he's got
00:30:34a huge lead in his class, so
00:30:36I don't know what happened. Something may have gone wrong, may have got
00:30:38involved in traffic, and of course
00:30:40getting off line, there's that rolled up rubber, telling
00:30:42you about it, starting to collect now, so once you get
00:30:44off line, you're in big trouble.
00:30:46Here's that battle of the fourth, still going on, hot
00:30:48and furious between Oliver Gavin,
00:30:50number 8 car,
00:30:52and Jack Baldwin.
00:30:54We talked about that Celine Mustang, and it's an ongoing
00:30:56development program for a brand new car,
00:30:58and so you've got to keep running hard, I would
00:31:00suspect, to really figure that car out.
00:31:02Maybe that caught him off. There's Weaver,
00:31:04who continues to lead,
00:31:06and it looks like he's opened it up
00:31:08just a little bit. He does, weaving his way through
00:31:10some traffic on the back straight,
00:31:12coming into these very fast 10-11
00:31:14around some more traffic. There comes
00:31:16Morrowbolt, and Morrowbolt is just about
00:31:18to go low under one of those cars.
00:31:20Boy, this is a tough decision
00:31:22right there, and here's the battle for second
00:31:24now in GTU,
00:31:26that again is the 66, the racers
00:31:28group, Kevin Buckler driven Porsche,
00:31:30and the 81, the Pure Image California
00:31:32Entertainment entry of Mike Fitzgerald.
00:31:34So look there at Butler, and you just saw
00:31:36in front of them both was the leader, I think,
00:31:38within GTU, the number 80
00:31:40team GW Motorsports Breckenridge Racing
00:31:42Corp entry, John Morton
00:31:44getting it all wrong and getting off track.
00:31:46Well, so John Morton now lost
00:31:48the lead in that GTU class, giving it
00:31:50to Kevin Buckler in the 66 car.
00:31:52On board now
00:31:54in the 81 car, the third car of the line
00:31:56up the front there is John Morton going to turn
00:31:58one and two, and whoops!
00:32:00Starts to get away from him here as he goes into turn two,
00:32:02slides up onto that infield,
00:32:04so now our number 81 car
00:32:06has jumped third to second.
00:32:08Right in front of him is the 66 car, so those three
00:32:10cars are very, very close together.
00:32:12Great battle in GTU, and what you
00:32:14had commented on earlier apparently coming
00:32:16true is they got a little wide on those
00:32:18marbles, the track started to crease up a little bit
00:32:20and caught Morton out. Driver, pretty vast
00:32:22experience, so you know this is a tough
00:32:24track race. Very vast experience.
00:32:26So Buckler
00:32:28leads it, chased hard now by Fitzgerald
00:32:30and up and around them both
00:32:32comes one of the sports racer
00:32:34category, the overall lead car
00:32:36and running very quickly
00:32:38indeed. Here comes
00:32:40Terry Borchler, too, in the number five
00:32:42GTO car, making up some time after his
00:32:44spin. He goes past the two
00:32:46GTU leaders.
00:32:48Boy, those two GTU cars are
00:32:50real close together. Fitzgerald now
00:32:52right behind Buckler.
00:32:54Very close indeed.
00:32:56That number 95 sports racer entry
00:32:58was the TRV Motorsports Extreme Exhaust
00:33:00with Ross Bentley behind the wheel.
00:33:02But this is the battle on the track
00:33:04right now. Closest battle in class
00:33:06and it is for the class lead.
00:33:08Buckler continuing to fend off
00:33:10Fitzgerald. And for Kevin Buckler
00:33:12this series is absolutely what
00:33:14the doctor ordered. He's always been very
00:33:16fast, they've got a great team, been a little
00:33:18short on budget sometimes
00:33:20and this is an opportunity he is
00:33:22able to shine. Show what that team is really capable
00:33:24of. As is the pursuing
00:33:26G&W Motorsports entry and they're putting
00:33:28on an awesome performance. Terrific.
00:33:30Looking closely followed by
00:33:32one of the sports racer two cars, which is
00:33:34having a job getting around them.
00:33:38Looking in, looking out, that's the
00:33:40number 62, Rich Grupp starting
00:33:42the Team Spencer Motorsports Sprint Shoring Services
00:33:44Mazda Kudzu.
00:33:46Now he gets a nose down inside
00:33:48the 81. This is
00:33:50just what those two GTU cars don't need
00:33:52is a potentially much
00:33:54faster car muddying the water
00:33:56there.
00:33:58He just got around.
00:34:02Very quick indeed.
00:34:04Meanwhile, rocketing by everybody
00:34:06comes Oliver Gavin, a certainly
00:34:08consulting entry. Chased there by
00:34:10Baldwin. Right behind him is going to be Jack
00:34:12Baldwin.
00:34:14Getting mixed up in some traffic there.
00:34:16And there is
00:34:18Ross Bentley, the tremendous Canadian
00:34:20driver bringing that number 95
00:34:22entry, the Supreme Exhaust System
00:34:24Racer Parts Wholesale. That's a Chevrolet,
00:34:26Riley Scott. Down in the pits he'll be turning
00:34:28it over to team owner Tom Bolt.
00:34:30See the driver change taking
00:34:32effect right there. And that really is a case
00:34:34of teamwork in the pit lane, isn't it? Not only with
00:34:36the crew but with the two drivers.
00:34:38Ralph Callan is out again in the number 12 car after
00:34:40that long stop. They were obviously fixing some body
00:34:42work. He's going to be very careful here.
00:34:44He's going to derange that body work again.
00:34:46Picking his way through quite a lot
00:34:48of traffic there. You can see he's falling back
00:34:50to 23rd overall. So the job becomes
00:34:52more difficult. The pits are getting busy.
00:34:56Welcome back
00:34:58to Homestead-Miami Speedway. And as you see
00:35:00race leader James Weaver in
00:35:02the pits. Looks routine. Driver change.
00:35:04Not happening. They want to keep
00:35:06James in. But looks like they went up to just tires
00:35:08and fuel. That looks like some pretty good stuff.
00:35:12Weaver has been lapping very quickly indeed.
00:35:14Now as you come out now with new tires
00:35:16with the track restuffed and some of the
00:35:18marble building up. What does the driver, David, have
00:35:20to be working on mentally right now to
00:35:22keep that car underneath some of the open ground?
00:35:24Well it's just that first lap you've really got to be careful
00:35:26because those tires really are cold.
00:35:28But it's a pretty high ambient temperature today
00:35:30so that certainly helps get them up to temperature quick.
00:35:32But unlike Formula 1 and some other
00:35:34types of races you don't have tire warming.
00:35:36So it's just something you've really got to be aware of.
00:35:38And there is our leader
00:35:40right now in the Sports Racer
00:35:422 category. The number 6
00:35:44ACI Source Technologies.
00:35:46That's a Nissan Lola being started
00:35:48by Brent Sherman. He'll be handing over to
00:35:50Gary Tiller. And this is the
00:35:52Sports Racer 2 category. This is its second
00:35:54race. It debuted at Phoenix.
00:35:56And it's smaller engines, smaller tires.
00:35:58They're restricted in terms of power.
00:36:00But much lighter. Right behind the driver's head
00:36:02there is the air restrictor. You can see how
00:36:04small the air intake was for the engine.
00:36:06And number 63
00:36:08the Downing Atlanta team. The
00:36:10Croc-Tile entry in. And Steve Pelkey,
00:36:12Trans Am driver the past couple of years
00:36:14is obviously doing some sports car racing as well.
00:36:16He's going to be stepping up, turning over to Downing.
00:36:18And number 37
00:36:20the Intersport Racing Banana Joe's
00:36:22Lola Ford of John Field
00:36:24has put it into
00:36:26the gravel trap.
00:36:28Well and truly into the gravel trap. Sitting there
00:36:30waiting for help as Oliver Gavin brings the
00:36:32number 8 car
00:36:34back into the pits.
00:36:36And this will be their second stop. I would suspect
00:36:38perhaps we'll see a driver change in this one
00:36:40as he turns over to Scott Schubot.
00:36:42Hits the marks
00:36:44and everybody over the wall.
00:36:46There's a little problem
00:36:48getting the refueling brake unhooked.
00:36:50And indeed the driver change is happening.
00:36:52Schubot will be getting in.
00:36:56Again looking fairly routine.
00:36:58They'd stopped not that long ago
00:37:00and apparently just went with tires and fuel.
00:37:02I guess
00:37:04they decided to take the advantage of this caution
00:37:06that there is to
00:37:08change the drivers for the longest stop
00:37:10while now it's time to do it
00:37:12while the track is going slow.
00:37:14And in fact here comes James Weaver in again.
00:37:16I would suspect for the exact reason you just
00:37:18mentioned with the yellow they can come in
00:37:20get the drivers change completed
00:37:22and not lose anywhere near as much time
00:37:24as they would under green.
00:37:26See if we see Andy Wallace coming out.
00:37:28Oh looks like Weaver's staying on board.
00:37:30That's true
00:37:32and it would be John Paul going on board
00:37:34anyway but Weaver stays in
00:37:36once again. That surprises me.
00:37:39And meanwhile Scott Schubot now on board
00:37:41the number 8 Berkeley Consulting
00:37:43Ford Lola
00:37:45and back on a track and again you can see the wrecker
00:37:47on course is clever for a fellow to get
00:37:49John Field's machine out of the gravel.
00:37:51James Weaver must be practicing for the Ironman here
00:37:53so he's obviously decided to fuel up
00:37:55in this caution period so he's going to do another
00:37:57full stint after having done
00:37:59one full stint.
00:38:01James Weaver's determined to stay
00:38:03as much behind a wheel as possible.
00:38:05John Field's car
00:38:07going up its own steam but it'll be like
00:38:09the 20 car we saw of David Bernard. It'll be
00:38:11absolutely full of that gravel
00:38:13everywhere and now it's all over the track. It'll be
00:38:15great for the first guys arriving.
00:38:17It'll be pouring out from the front wheel arch as it is.
00:38:19It really hits the brakes hard for the first time.
00:38:21They'll all dump out right out of
00:38:23those tires. If they haven't got the caution
00:38:25flag guys aren't working a good job.
00:38:27That's a good advice.
00:38:29Roll the ball.
00:38:31And Baldi going very slowly as well.
00:38:33Of course we're under caution but we wonder if he may not
00:38:35be making a move down toward the pits.
00:38:37In fact that's exactly what he's doing.
00:38:39Tomorrow Baldi with the
00:38:41stop by Weaver back
00:38:43in the lead and Baldi bringing the car in.
00:38:47Watch this stop. See if
00:38:49they go for the driver change. They do. There's
00:38:51Didier Theys helping Baldi
00:38:53step out. Didier
00:38:55Theys also very experienced
00:38:57in this type of racing and
00:38:59in this team too.
00:39:01He's driven with the Duran team
00:39:03in some form or another for a long time
00:39:05and with Freddie Leinhardt's support
00:39:07through the Lista company and Leinhardt doing some
00:39:09driving on occasion in this one he stepped out
00:39:11and they brought Baldi into the pace
00:39:13Didier Theys
00:39:15put me off skiing for life.
00:39:17We went skiing in Courchevel in France
00:39:19in 1985 and I tore
00:39:21all the ligaments in my left leg and
00:39:23hardly been able to walk since. Didier
00:39:25thought it was a huge headache.
00:39:27Oh I'm sure. There's
00:39:29the number 81 GTU Porsche
00:39:313R which has been in that battle for the lead
00:39:33in that category affecting their drivers
00:39:35change. Darren Law who is
00:39:37no slouch at all getting behind the wheel
00:39:39replacing Fitzgerald and Didier Theys
00:39:41takes that car back on the track.
00:39:43You were talking about going out on cold tires. This is when
00:39:45you've got to be real careful and you're the new driver
00:39:47so you have no idea what track conditions are like.
00:39:49That's where the experience of
00:39:51Didier Theys comes good.
00:39:53We'll be back.
00:39:55Welcome back to the infield road course
00:39:57here at Homestead Miami Speedway
00:39:59as we are looking for the green.
00:40:01Lights out on the pace car. It ducks down into pit lane
00:40:03and James Weaver is going to
00:40:05lead the field around for the restart.
00:40:07You see Theys in second
00:40:09then the Celine Alice Speedlamp
00:40:11Mustang leader in GTO right there
00:40:13and we are green.
00:40:15We are green.
00:40:17So Weaver takes the lead
00:40:19and as we watch Weaver at the helm
00:40:21with the Lincoln powered Wiley Sport
00:40:23Let's take a moment
00:40:25and take a break from the action
00:40:27and take a quick glimpse behind the scenes
00:40:29of the Dyson Racing team
00:40:31and talk to some of the team's mainstays
00:40:33including the Patriarch himself.
00:40:41Car number 16 is the Rabbit
00:40:43of the Dyson team but their sister car
00:40:45number 20 gets a lot of TLC as well.
00:40:47And why not? That's when the boss
00:40:49Rob Dyson jumps in from time to time.
00:40:51A hands-on driver, Dyson's racing philosophy
00:40:53centers on stability.
00:40:55We've got a very stable team.
00:40:57I mean all the guys, you know,
00:40:59we're all together. We've been together for a long time.
00:41:01Pat Smith, my crew chief, and I have been racing for 26 years.
00:41:03So when you get that kind of stability
00:41:05I think, I don't think it's stagnation.
00:41:07It's more stability
00:41:09and I think that helps.
00:41:11Plus I think we've got great drivers.
00:41:13I mean James is our number one driver
00:41:15and then we bring Elliot back.
00:41:17He's won a couple of championships in the past
00:41:19couple, three years.
00:41:21And it'd be nice to win a couple more championships
00:41:23and that's what we're looking forward to.
00:41:25Dyson's team thinks championships
00:41:27are a very good reason. Dyson's drivers
00:41:29won last year's Can-Am championship
00:41:31and the 97 and 98 World Sports Car titles.
00:41:33One of the keys to the Dyson success story
00:41:35don't over-manage your drivers.
00:41:37Well I think that
00:41:39it's a different way of working things
00:41:41on the Dyson team because
00:41:43they take an attitude, kind of a laid-back attitude
00:41:45where everybody does their job
00:41:47well and let everybody else do their job
00:41:49well but don't try and put any pressure on anybody.
00:41:51I think that this is the team I've had the least
00:41:53amount of pressure to go fast or do well
00:41:55of any team but you're still inspired to do it
00:41:57because of the way the team works.
00:41:59Dyson's racing hardware is traditionally
00:42:01second to none. He'll be the first to tell you
00:42:03that hardware is just
00:42:05tools of the trade for the people
00:42:07that make the difference. Well I think the whole team
00:42:09is basically one big family.
00:42:11I know Pat's been here longer
00:42:13than anybody but everyone, I've been here 10 years
00:42:15and everyone's been here longer than I have.
00:42:17You always see the same faces.
00:42:19Consistency really pays off in this type of racing.
00:42:21Continuing on that longevity
00:42:23theme, 20-year Dyson vet
00:42:25Pat Smith has been responsible for
00:42:27turning out fast, reliable cars and giving
00:42:29the folks and team managers a lot to think about.
00:42:31For Dyson I would say
00:42:33continuity of the team.
00:42:35Pat Smith's been there for 20
00:42:37years I reckon or maybe longer
00:42:39and same old guys every year
00:42:41so you've got good continuity, good equipment,
00:42:43good drivers.
00:42:45Now normally you'd see the subject of our feature
00:42:47manning his pits a la Roger Penske
00:42:49or Richard Childress but Dyson had to
00:42:51fly back to New York for some rather pressing
00:42:53business. After all when you're a businessman, owner,
00:42:55driver, sometimes something has to
00:42:57give. But with that legendary
00:42:59stability and continuity
00:43:01this team continues to do quite well.
00:43:03As you can see here
00:43:05with a lead although it's a little bit
00:43:07more pressing as Hayes has turned
00:43:09the wick up ahead. I thought to get James
00:43:11he runs a Kevin Doran there, the owner of the
00:43:1327 car. Talk about same old
00:43:15guys.
00:43:17Now once James hears that he'll be
00:43:19excited. Absolutely, there's that
00:43:21battle for
00:43:23the GTU on us now.
00:43:25And that is that number
00:43:2780, one of the Breckenridge Racing Corp
00:43:29GW Motorsports cars. Remember he
00:43:31looped it and has fallen back
00:43:33into second, Buckler right there in the
00:43:35races and third
00:43:37and right there now is the
00:43:39creator of the Pure Image California Entertainment
00:43:41also from GW Motorsports
00:43:43Darren Law now behind the wheel.
00:43:45Quite a change
00:43:47there in those top three GTU cars
00:43:49but awfully close together all three
00:43:51of them in spite of Morton
00:43:53spinning.
00:43:57That's one of the troubles when you're
00:43:59driving something like a GTU car and you've got your own
00:44:01really intense battle. These cars handle
00:44:03pretty well, they go pretty quick down the straight.
00:44:05They're almost as quick as some of the SR2 cars
00:44:07but at the same time as the traffic comes
00:44:09weaving through you're supposed to give them a bit of room
00:44:11and it's very difficult to do when you've got your own
00:44:13very important battle going on.
00:44:15You call those SR2 cars on the
00:44:17infield very agile and fast but
00:44:19when you come up on a battle of the GTU cars
00:44:21you have to give that up
00:44:23and then when you get up onto the straight
00:44:25obviously those GTU cars will be some pretty
00:44:27serious grunt as you can see, able to hold
00:44:29their own. It's going to be a bit frustrating sometimes
00:44:31for the SR2 drivers. It is.
00:44:33It's frustrating for everybody. Then meanwhile James
00:44:35or somebody comes whistling out the heat with
00:44:37130 miles an hour more than you and you've got to sort of try
00:44:39and make room for him.
00:44:41Continue to watch some of that ongoing
00:44:43battling right there, 66, Buckner
00:44:45and there's exactly what we were just talking about.
00:44:47Great case in point there, the SR2 car
00:44:49and the GTU car, almost level
00:44:51pegging it down that back straight.
00:44:53Nice wide shot as the group
00:44:55and that is Weaver continuing
00:44:57on point with Hayes now in
00:44:59second as we
00:45:01continue to run hard here at
00:45:03Homestead Miami Speedway. Weaver leads
00:45:05with Hayes like mad.
00:45:11Back at Homestead Miami Speedway
00:45:13good look right there at the car currently running
00:45:15third in the new Sports Racer
00:45:172 category.
00:45:19That's the Snow Schumacher Racing Nissan
00:45:21Lola and again this is only the
00:45:23second weekend, the second race for
00:45:25this class of car but everybody's
00:45:27very excited about it. You can buy one of these cars for
00:45:29just a little over $200,000
00:45:31and it's turnkey, it is ready to go racing
00:45:33and with the growth possibilities
00:45:35of this class at that kind of a price
00:45:37that's a heck of a deal. Absolutely, I'm going to go out
00:45:39right now as soon as we finish here, I'm off to buy one.
00:45:41And you would excel David
00:45:43I saw you drive the Simon & Scholl
00:45:45at Road America a couple years ago at the big
00:45:47Can-Am reunion and you were having way too much
00:45:49fun then. Absolutely
00:45:51I was having way too much fun which is why I haven't
00:45:53driven it since. Good look there
00:45:55at Ron Johnson who's taken over the
00:45:57controls of the Celine Allen
00:45:59Speedlab BASF entry from
00:46:01starter Terry Borchler who had that
00:46:03quick spin earlier on but that car
00:46:05is running pretty much uncontested right now
00:46:07in GTO, very strong run
00:46:09up to 11th overall, that means he's racing
00:46:11with some of the sports racers. Having a
00:46:13very good run in spite of the spin, they're leading
00:46:15their class by miles so this car
00:46:17looking like a real race car and
00:46:19apparently driving like one too, I mean it
00:46:21looks very good going through this class
00:46:23turns 10 and 11 here
00:46:25down at Homestead Speedway.
00:46:27Well when they started the
00:46:29Celine Allen Speedlab project, the car
00:46:31was basically one of the street
00:46:33Celine Allen cars that they
00:46:35were working on. This is a full out
00:46:37GT category car and
00:46:39you can see it's a much wider track
00:46:41it's much lower to the ground and it
00:46:43is a purebred race car and it
00:46:45is definitely showing that that development
00:46:47coming along nicely.
00:46:49There you see the class summary for the
00:46:51GTO dash.
00:46:53Ron Johnson driving now, he
00:46:55started with the team a few years ago
00:46:57in fact won a world challenge championship
00:46:59for the team and has been
00:47:01with it for a long time and of course Terry
00:47:03Borchler came up to the street stock
00:47:05categories and proved to be an absolutely
00:47:07superb talent and as we
00:47:09talked about earlier, that team
00:47:11situation right now with the support of
00:47:13that program will be a great opportunity
00:47:15but Weaver up front
00:47:17continues to just simply fly
00:47:19there's a class summary right
00:47:21now for the sports racing division
00:47:23and Weaver continues to lead
00:47:25but again Robinson racing
00:47:27with the Jack Baldwin and of course
00:47:29Irv Haer will be driving in place of Robinson
00:47:31again this weekend and there's a nice move by
00:47:33Weaver played by one of those
00:47:35GT category cars who apparently waved him by
00:47:37and he gave him a thank you.
00:47:39There you see the number
00:47:4112 car
00:47:43Schiaccarella at the wheel I think now. Still
00:47:45Kellner's, he's got that.
00:47:47It is still Kellner's, yeah well so he's doing
00:47:49a long fit too and a fairly adventurous
00:47:51one too, a big belt into that car
00:47:53earlier on put the other guy out of the race
00:47:55and he came into that long stop.
00:47:57Here's that battle for second
00:47:59and GTU continues to be
00:48:01absolutely fierce
00:48:03number 80 Morton trying
00:48:05to hold off Buckler
00:48:07in those two cars, Morton in the number
00:48:0980 right there, Buckler in the black and white
00:48:1166 and Buckler
00:48:13has shown his nose a few times up on the
00:48:15banking. Neck and neck down
00:48:17to that turn too, that's where
00:48:19John Morton spun off, he missed that gravel
00:48:21trap, he was pretty lucky there, he stayed on the
00:48:23grass when he spun and didn't get stuck in that
00:48:25gravel so allowed him to pull
00:48:27back onto the track real quickly and obviously
00:48:29the great effect he's got around
00:48:31the 66 car.
00:48:33Right behind them is the 98 GTU machine
00:48:35the GT Technologies Porsche
00:48:37of Kevin Wheeler and Randy Pope
00:48:39but a lot of smoke out of the back of that
00:48:41car. It is, Randy Pope's another guy
00:48:43who's very underrated
00:48:45Ooh, that looks like oil
00:48:47Oil! Oil! My goodness
00:48:49me, that car's got a short run to go
00:48:51I'd say.
00:48:53Whatever it is, it's coming out rather
00:48:55frequently. Anybody behind
00:48:57has got to be very concerned to get a tire in that
00:48:59It doesn't seem to affect
00:49:01the speed much. It will do.
00:49:03Of course they say right before
00:49:05it completely lets go it tightens up
00:49:07and builds great horsepower for a few
00:49:09seconds.
00:49:11Is he pulling off lines?
00:49:13I don't think he does. I think he just
00:49:15went down a wide line to let the Ferrari through.
00:49:17Now he seems to be slowing.
00:49:19See the Ferrari even against those GTU cars.
00:49:21It wasn't a real complete blow by, was it?
00:49:25That car obviously struggling
00:49:27right now.
00:49:29Not sure who's at the wheel, whether it's Kevin Wheeler
00:49:31or Randy Pope, but
00:49:33the 98 car
00:49:35unless they just stopped and they overfilled it
00:49:37with something
00:49:39Yeah, Wheeler started the car.
00:49:41But it seemed to have stopped coming out, whatever it was.
00:49:43Now you're
00:49:45right, if it's an overfill situation
00:49:47that's a good sign. If it wasn't an overfill
00:49:49that's a bad sign.
00:49:51Little puffs here and there.
00:49:53And right behind him, yeah.
00:49:55That's Scott Schubach in the 8 car.
00:49:57Quickly worked by.
00:49:59Keep an eye on the 98 GT Technologies
00:50:01Porsche. Ah, there it is.
00:50:03We get official word now. Race Control
00:50:05a black flag as that car
00:50:07was dumping on the track. And of course the track
00:50:09already hot, greasy, marbly.
00:50:11The officials want to bring that car in and see if
00:50:13that is something that can be taken care of
00:50:15or whether it can be done for the day. Up front
00:50:17James Wheeler continues to just
00:50:19hammer around the track
00:50:21and continues to lead overall.
00:50:31Welcome back
00:50:33to the Nextel 250 here at Homestead
00:50:35Miami Speedway. I'm Greg Kramer along with
00:50:37David Hobbs, John Bisignano and Sandy
00:50:39There is a look at the number 52
00:50:41that's the Safina Racing
00:50:43eTravelServe.com BMW
00:50:45and they have made a driver change.
00:50:47Joe Safina started the car. Whoa!
00:50:49Scooter Gable got in, but
00:50:51that's the number 66 entry.
00:50:53Buckler started it, but now
00:50:55Phillip Collin driving in the 37
00:50:57of John Field, the Banana Joe's
00:50:59sports racer machine.
00:51:01And I don't know whether they were both
00:51:03one was off track in avoidance of the other
00:51:05or whether it was a coming together, but both involved.
00:51:07Again going into that tight
00:51:09turn 2 area there on the track.
00:51:11David, I don't
00:51:13see any damage to that racer's group car
00:51:15at this stage. It looks pretty undamaged
00:51:17so Phillip Collin who's only just
00:51:19got into the car, now got his
00:51:21battle, really going to have to
00:51:23battle to get back up to the lead of that
00:51:25GTU class. Tremendous battle going on between
00:51:27that car, the 80 and the 81
00:51:29all through. John Morton spun out of the lead
00:51:31of the 80 earlier on. This car
00:51:33took the lead, then the 80 car took the lead.
00:51:35There is the 80 car, and there is also
00:51:37James Weaver, our current leader.
00:51:39Out for the long stint of the day.
00:51:41Boy he has made 2 stops
00:51:43stayed in both times
00:51:45as they took on fuel and tires
00:51:47and Weaver as you put it earlier
00:51:49going for the Ironman distinction here
00:51:51and I mean he loves nothing better than to
00:51:53just stay out and drive. You got to think
00:51:55they were hoping to build up a big advantage
00:51:57here, but Didier Theys is just simply not
00:51:59allowing that to happen.
00:52:01All these sports racers
00:52:03now with the lights on so that the
00:52:05GTU cars are
00:52:07and the SR2s are aware of them coming up
00:52:09look at that
00:52:11gap, it's just absolutely nothing
00:52:13between Weaver and
00:52:15Didier Theys. Weaver, I would think
00:52:17it's been hot
00:52:19at this stage, might be just starting to feel
00:52:21a little bit rough around the edges
00:52:23and there's the 74 car
00:52:25with hair behind the wheel now I think.
00:52:27I think that's still Jack Baldwin I think.
00:52:29Is it really? Jack Baldwin's still another one
00:52:31to have the Ironman, why did Jack Baldwin
00:52:33get the Ironman?
00:52:35Well of course Baldwin
00:52:37great racing heritage as well
00:52:39and he's really, when he hooked up with
00:52:41George Robinson and his team with this program
00:52:43they have really been
00:52:45a rebirth for them and again you can see those
00:52:47restrictors right in the air box
00:52:49right behind the driver's helmet there
00:52:51that is the magic of
00:52:53current sports car racing
00:52:55restricting horsepower to equal levels.
00:52:57Of course obviously
00:52:59different engine sizes, engine types
00:53:014-valve, 2-valve, 4-throttle
00:53:03all have different air restrictions
00:53:05and of course the air restrictor is adjusted to the
00:53:07size of the engine. Try and keep the horsepower
00:53:09in the various classes roughly
00:53:11equal. Very, very difficult job
00:53:13to do but
00:53:15they're trying. There's the 37 car
00:53:17had that spin
00:53:19Yep, Field
00:53:21making his way down into
00:53:23pits.
00:53:25He's leaving the pits?
00:53:27No
00:53:41I would suspect he did go off track
00:53:43as we saw. He must have at least pit
00:53:45and wanted to get some new tires on
00:53:47and with being off track anyway
00:53:49why not pit, get tires on
00:53:51get that junk on the old tires off
00:53:53and fuel up and go after it.
00:53:55Lost a lot of time however
00:53:57as that all happened under green.
00:53:59Absolutely, if you're going to do that
00:54:01you're going to want to bring a yellow flag out
00:54:03for yourself so you can do
00:54:05some repairs for it.
00:54:07Field's going to get
00:54:09that car back up to speed. The Banana
00:54:11Joe's, that's a Lola with a Ford
00:54:13engine on board. We were talking about
00:54:15those different engines. Meanwhile, Weaver
00:54:17continues to lap. That's the Lincoln
00:54:19powered Riley and Scott Ford so different
00:54:21chassis and you know one thing about the
00:54:23restrictors, it might limit the horsepower
00:54:25to a certain figure but
00:54:27each of the engines have different torque
00:54:29different drivability characteristics
00:54:31so on certain tracks the torquey engine
00:54:33might be more effective on other tracks
00:54:35an engine with a little bit more high revving
00:54:37would still have an advantage
00:54:39it's just the outright horsepower.
00:54:41Absolutely, I mean that's the way these restrictors
00:54:43are designed to try and make
00:54:45the horsepower and the torque comparable
00:54:47it's a difficult thing to pull off
00:54:49but they seem to be fairly successful here
00:54:51Judd powered V10 engine car
00:54:53of Doranair driven by
00:54:55Didier Tej
00:54:57just inches behind at this stage
00:54:59in the race so obviously these power outputs
00:55:01are very comparable
00:55:03the aerodynamics are very different
00:55:05Riley and Scott as we mentioned earlier has a lot of
00:55:07downforce, supposedly not great
00:55:09in a straight line but obviously not bad here either
00:55:11and the number 18, one of our
00:55:13American GT category cars
00:55:15the Levy Racing Enterprises Camaro
00:55:17started by Mike Cohen is making
00:55:19a pit stop and
00:55:21routine pit stop one would assume
00:55:23they've been chasing the
00:55:25lead 0-9 in the spirit of Daytona
00:55:27entry for much of the race
00:55:29and there's what we were talking about there with Weaver
00:55:31and Tej
00:55:33giving chase once again and that
00:55:35car in second, a punched out
00:55:37Formula 1 engine but with the
00:55:39magic of the restrictors
00:55:41an incredibly close race
00:55:45Welcome back everybody to Home Fit Miami
00:55:47Speedway and there is Weaver
00:55:49there is the lap car and right behind
00:55:51that car is Didier Tej
00:55:53that is the gap between first and
00:55:55second and these two teams
00:55:57continue to put on not only a great race
00:55:59but add a very quick win
00:56:01Very good slip right through this field
00:56:03going past that lap traffic
00:56:05David Weaver just a momentary advantage there
00:56:07the lights now start to reflect
00:56:09off the wall, the crowd covers up
00:56:11a little bit, temperatures down
00:56:13James Weaver must be starting to get pretty tired
00:56:15Didier Tej continues to exert that
00:56:17terrific pressure
00:56:19in the second place there
00:56:21Mr. Judd V. Tejenga
00:56:23Oh and Tej
00:56:25gets caught out by traffic
00:56:27right there, that's going to hurt
00:56:29you can get by him on the straight, that's nice
00:56:31but he got held up even a second or two and that's
00:56:33exactly what Weaver would like to see
00:56:35there's a good look at our
00:56:37class summary as we look down through the field
00:56:39and we understand the number
00:56:4174 in Foremax entries in the pit sandy
00:56:43This will be a routine stop here
00:56:45for the number 74 cars, we see the driver
00:56:47change, Jack Baldwin getting out
00:56:49Irv Haer getting ready to get
00:56:51in, they'll be changing tires and taking on
00:56:53fuel, no other problems
00:56:55according to the team manager Jim
00:56:57Frazier, he says it's all about fuel economy
00:56:59at this point, the strategy was
00:57:01keep them out there as long as possible
00:57:03Oh with Baldwin behind the wheel
00:57:05that's pretty easy, I don't think anybody loves
00:57:07their racing with Jack Baldwin
00:57:09look at the number 80 machine in the pits as well
00:57:11as John Horton is going to turn over to Mike
00:57:13Trump, routine stop as well
00:57:15talking about that car right there
00:57:17the Informax team, Informax has really
00:57:19jumped on board Grand American Road Racing
00:57:21they're now sponsoring the Informax
00:57:23Way Fast Award for the
00:57:25pole qualifier for Carl Balding
00:57:27claiming it in this race
00:57:29so Informax really taking Grand American
00:57:31Road Racing to heart at this stage
00:57:33of the season and that's a win-win
00:57:35for everybody
00:57:37Absolutely, it's great to see more and more sponsors
00:57:39on the board, road racing in particular
00:57:41So, Irv Haer now
00:57:43behind the controls of that beautiful
00:57:45number 74 Informax
00:57:47of the 74 Huntington Ranch entry
00:57:49as he heads back out onto the track
00:57:51again, running well into the top 5
00:57:53for most of the race
00:57:55and of course Jack Baldwin who's been that iron man
00:57:57long stint at the beginning
00:57:59taking a bit of a breather down in pit lane
00:58:01as Haer heads out onto the track and Sandy Hengis
00:58:03found Jack, Sandy?
00:58:05It looks like you barely broke a sweat out there, action
00:58:07Jack Baldwin here
00:58:09Hey, you know there's nothing I like more than racing
00:58:11except for my two daughters, Eric and Allison
00:58:13way to go in that third place in gymnastics Allison
00:58:15super job
00:58:17Looks like the car was handling very well for you, no other changes
00:58:19than fuel and tires for Irv Haer
00:58:21getting in the car, how is the track out there?
00:58:23Well, the track seems like it's actually getting
00:58:25a little better
00:58:27we need to be a little faster on full tanks
00:58:29we need to work on it a little bit more
00:58:31but the car's pretty solid
00:58:33we're just running hard
00:58:35you know, traffic's traffic
00:58:39Ah, ever the diplomat, Jack Baldwin
00:58:43That's not what he meant at all
00:58:45and of course, you know
00:58:47I have to mention that Baldwin lives in Atlanta, Georgia
00:58:49there's plenty of the southern heat there
00:58:51so I suppose it's a little more comfortable for him
00:58:53to be able to stay in that car for a little bit longer
00:58:55you made an interesting comment
00:58:57about the track getting better
00:58:59well that rain this morning is the reason
00:59:01to cream the track up
00:59:03even more tire rubber getting down the car
00:59:05is working better
00:59:07Into the pits comes James Weaver
00:59:09so Didier Chase takes the lead
00:59:11there on the outside
00:59:13and this is the most frustrating thing
00:59:15look at that speed
00:59:17so slow down the pit
00:59:19Weaver is obviously ready for the stop
00:59:21already loosening up the harnesses
00:59:23to be ready
00:59:25for John Paul Jr. to jump in
00:59:27the car making its way down into pit lane
00:59:29John Visignano is standing by
00:59:31and there's John Paul Jr.
00:59:33coming at you
00:59:35James Weaver comes into the stopping area
00:59:37John Paul Jr. up into the cockpit
00:59:39very quick the car up in the air
00:59:41the Dyson team practiced this for hours
00:59:43and hours and hours to get everything right
00:59:45he came into the pits with only
00:59:478 tenths of a second lead
00:59:49every second in this pit stop
00:59:51is absolutely crucial
00:59:53all four tires have been changed
00:59:55the fuel right now is the slowest thing flowing
00:59:57and it looks like they might be having
00:59:59a little bit of a problem
01:00:01a little bit of struggle with the belts
01:00:03John Paul Jr. in the car
01:00:05they are ready to get out of here guys
01:00:07cars down off the jacks
01:00:09little slow getting away from John Paul
01:00:11there he goes
01:00:13and even with a little problem with the belts
01:00:15they've been a fairly quick driver
01:00:17previous stop for all the engines
01:00:19that was what gave them a lot of help
01:00:21these guys have been able to pull out a big lead
01:00:23with James staying in
01:00:25that pit stop they made
01:00:27John Paul Jr. has entered in our Dyson team
01:00:29they've been with this team a while
01:00:31knows these cars, he'll be up to speed
01:00:33very quickly
01:00:35but it was James Weaver who did that long
01:00:37double opening stint
01:00:39and after a quick drink he's caught up
01:00:41with John Bisignano
01:00:43James Weaver what a terrific run in the Dyson
01:00:45but that Ferrari is flying
01:00:47it is, I mean it's a great race
01:00:49I think they've got a little bit more horsepower than us
01:00:51but the Goodyear tires
01:00:53put down the power a lot better
01:00:55so I can get off the slow corners quicker
01:00:57so I was on a lap
01:00:59we're pretty evenly matched
01:01:01are there any problems with your car whatsoever
01:01:03in these closing stages?
01:01:05oh don't say that, no it's going like a train, flying
01:01:07race your superstition
01:01:09coming to play
01:01:11do not jinx the run we're having
01:01:15so John Paul Jr. now has his work cut out
01:01:17to catch the flying Giddey Hays
01:01:19the flying Giddey Hays here at home
01:01:23and welcome back
01:01:25to the Nextel 250 round 3 of the
01:01:27Grand American Road Racing Championship
01:01:29we had a full course caution while we were in break
01:01:31the number 66 GTU Porsche
01:01:33being driven by Phillip Collin got into the wall
01:01:35a little bit, some debris got onto the track
01:01:37fairly quick clean up and as you can see
01:01:39lights already out on the pace car
01:01:41Giddey Hays and the Duran Jud
01:01:43sponsored by Malista is going to bring
01:01:45him around and you can see
01:01:47right there is John Paul Jr.
01:01:49so it's that close, we're green
01:01:51and John Paul along with
01:01:53I think that's
01:01:55Irv Haer wasting no time David
01:01:57getting around all the traffic in front
01:01:59we've got a great battle for the lead
01:02:01that of course is a bad break for Giddey Hays
01:02:03because when they changed and put John Paul
01:02:05in the lead car earlier on
01:02:07they had a longish, well not a longish, but a long stop
01:02:09under green and John Paul
01:02:11has almost a lap lead of course
01:02:13now all the back races still
01:02:15racing in there right behind them both is Irv Haer
01:02:17traffic jam down here
01:02:19turn 6. Big traffic jam and there's
01:02:21your battle of the American GT category
01:02:23the 0-9 Daytona Mitsubishi
01:02:25Cat Country Camaro
01:02:27Doug Goat now driving and getting
01:02:29a lot of pressure from the number 18
01:02:31Levy Racing Enterprises Chevy Camaro
01:02:33Mike Cohen started that car, John
01:02:35Levy scheduled to get on board
01:02:37and it is very close
01:02:39indeed, traffic has
01:02:41hurt the Levy car. Right in the middle
01:02:43of that too is the 66 and the 80 car
01:02:45backing it out for the honors
01:02:47in the GTU class, the 66 car having
01:02:49got back on the track after that wall-banging
01:02:51issue there
01:02:53Well, very close indeed, there's number
01:02:5581 Darren Law and there's the 66
01:02:57you can see the damage to the right
01:02:59rear corner of that car
01:03:01fortunately for them it didn't get into any of the
01:03:03internals inside, David, and I think that
01:03:05was why they were able to do such a quick stop
01:03:07but there comes the number 18
01:03:09Levy Racing Enterprises Camaro
01:03:11there's the leader, 09
01:03:13it's that close
01:03:15there he is, there's
01:03:17the margin, the white car and then the yellow Camaro
01:03:19sits in second
01:03:21getting mixed up there with sports racers
01:03:23and sports racer 2
01:03:25class cars, look at this
01:03:27tremendous battle for the
01:03:29All-American GT lead, the 09 and the 18
01:03:31absolutely tied together there
01:03:33by a short piece of spring as they
01:03:35whistle into that turn 2, 3 and 4 complex
01:03:37Goat and Levy very close
01:03:39there's your leader in GTU
01:03:41they're all very close, and look at this move down
01:03:43to the inside, and
01:03:45Levy just found the opportunity
01:03:47wasted no time, but look at Goat fight
01:03:49back, and
01:03:51it looks like Levy's got a trap behind this lower
01:03:53car, and Levy's got the line as they come into
01:03:556, that was not only
01:03:57an opportunistic pass, but a smart one
01:03:59but Levy now being slightly held
01:04:01up by the 52 car as they came
01:04:03off that corner, 52 car lying
01:04:05third in GTU at the moment
01:04:07and Goat tries to counter pass, but David
01:04:09here's the original pass
01:04:11down the inside here to turn 4
01:04:13so Levy gets the pass
01:04:15there on Goat, but as they come up to 5
01:04:17which is a left-hander, Goat is now
01:04:19on line, so
01:04:21but it looks as though Levy was able to maintain
01:04:23the advantage, and in fact
01:04:25stretch it out a little bit, there's the class summary in that category
01:04:27number 84 Comber Racing
01:04:29and Orion Motorsports, third and fourth
01:04:31back up front, there is Taze
01:04:33there is John Paul Jr.
01:04:35and not too far adrift of them
01:04:37in the Berkeley Consulting, Lola Ford
01:04:39now is Scott Schubach
01:04:41having a pretty solid run, good look at John Paul Jr.
01:04:43spent
01:04:45quite a bit of time as he mentioned with Dyson Racing
01:04:47he really found a home there
01:04:49well look he said he's been there for 10 years
01:04:51and a lot of people have been there longer than him
01:04:53James Weaver I would have said has been driving there
01:04:55at least 10 years
01:04:57yeah he and Dyson have had a great relationship
01:04:59for a number of years, and one thing when you
01:05:01talk to Weaver, oh
01:05:03Taze sweeping around a clump of
01:05:05three GTU category cars
01:05:07and I think those are the cars that are
01:05:09in the battle, they're all dicing for the lead themselves
01:05:11so they aren't going to give him a lot of track work
01:05:13we continue to watch
01:05:15Taze, but we were talking about Weaver
01:05:17and the fact that Weaver says he loved it
01:05:19when he was racing the McLaren
01:05:21GT1 GT cars
01:05:23over in Europe, he loved
01:05:25to come over here and race these cars, he said
01:05:27these were proper race cars, and he said
01:05:29there was no feel in a race car like a
01:05:31sports car, or a sports racer
01:05:33if you will, he said they are really
01:05:35fun to drive. There is
01:05:37that battle, Darren Law, number 81
01:05:39now has gone to the front, that's how close this has been
01:05:41in the Pure Image California
01:05:43entertainment Porsche, there is the number
01:05:4552 BMW, the Safina racing
01:05:47e-travel serve entry, and
01:05:49that's 1, 2, 3 in class, and
01:05:51look at Irv Haer
01:05:53running the needle, weaving his way through
01:05:55coming up to that turn 8 now
01:05:57and they're not going to give him any room you see, because that
01:05:59number 52 car is breathing right down the neck
01:06:01running Irv's 66 car
01:06:03looks like Irv sensed that too, didn't he
01:06:05that did allow
01:06:07the 81 car just a little
01:06:09bit of leeway there, as they all got jumbled up
01:06:11there, coming out onto the
01:06:13high speed zone, now what's that damage
01:06:15to the right rear corner of the 66 car
01:06:17going to do to aerodynamics, is that going to affect it
01:06:19well, it's not going to help it, but
01:06:21at this stage of the game, it probably won't
01:06:23one of those things if you're practicing and
01:06:25qualifying, you're looking for every tenth of a
01:06:27second when it comes to that right position
01:06:29on the track, a lot of things
01:06:31come into play. The GTU battle
01:06:33at the front, one of the best, we'll be right
01:06:35back
01:06:37Welcome back everybody
01:06:39and the problematic day continues for the number
01:06:4120 Norco Tetford Goodyear Dyson
01:06:43car of David
01:06:45Bernard, he got back in after turning
01:06:47it over to EFR and a lot of smoke from the
01:06:49back of that machine. Yeah, I wonder if that's
01:06:51residue of that off he had earlier on
01:06:53where all that gravel got in there, it could be
01:06:55maybe not, maybe just had some
01:06:57sort of engine expiration
01:06:59or an oil line off or something, but
01:07:01putting it in alongside the lake there, so their day
01:07:03is done. That is a
01:07:05huge pass right there, number
01:07:0781 Darren Law in that
01:07:09yellow and white portion
01:07:11was up by a full lap on the number
01:07:1366 racers group entry and the number
01:07:1552 entry, that's the
01:07:17Suprena racing entry, currently driven
01:07:19by Scooter Gable
01:07:21and if he's able to get by, that puts
01:07:23the second and third place machines in the
01:07:25GTU division back on the lead
01:07:27lap and then of course the praying
01:07:29the rosary beads fondling for the
01:07:31caution comes up. Yeah, absolutely
01:07:33like I say, they're a lap behind
01:07:35and time's running out now, but still
01:07:37in all, the 81 Darren Law has obviously
01:07:39decided that discretion is the better part
01:07:41of valor here and no good getting involved in a
01:07:43huge battle for the lead with those
01:07:45other two guys when he's already a lap up
01:07:47but he's just pretty cool
01:07:49I'd say, he'll just follow them around.
01:07:51Speaking of the lead, we go back to our overall leader
01:07:53Didier Thijs and that
01:07:55listed Duran Judd
01:07:57and we heard James Weaver comment that he thought that car
01:07:59was making a little bit more power
01:08:01but he was getting, Weaver was getting
01:08:03out of the corners better and
01:08:05of course with the restrictors everything's supposed to be
01:08:07fairly equal but that gets back again
01:08:09to the nature of the torque
01:08:11characteristics in the engine. The nature and the size
01:08:13of the engine, this is a 4 litre V10
01:08:15the obviously the
01:08:17car of Weaver's 5.5 litre
01:08:19V8, very different torque
01:08:21curve, very different car curve, very different everything
01:08:23but of course the other point that James
01:08:25made out, he's got his Goodyear tyres on this
01:08:27the number 16 car which he felt had better grip
01:08:29on the low speed corners
01:08:31it gave him better room to pop the corner
01:08:33the Duran car here is on
01:08:35Yokohama's tremendous tyre battle
01:08:37in this whole series, you've got Yokohama
01:08:39Pirelli, Michelin, Dunlop, Goodyear
01:08:41I mean everybody
01:08:43in the tyre world is out there and everybody's
01:08:45looking for bragging rights. Well and currently
01:08:47that's got to go with Yokohama and that team
01:08:49and a problem, that's Oliver Gavin
01:08:51who was back in the car after Schumacher's
01:08:53middle stint and the nose
01:08:55has come off and
01:08:57I don't know exactly how it came off
01:08:59but it probably stopped.
01:09:01Yes and look at that gravel and tyre pickup
01:09:03that he's picked up there, wow
01:09:05it must be still attached because when he backs up there
01:09:07it followed him up the road so it must be hanging
01:09:09up by the headlight table so he's going to push it back
01:09:11to the pits now. Oh and there's
01:09:13Martin Snow in the Snow-Schumacher racing
01:09:15sports racer 2 category
01:09:17that's one of those Nissan Lolas that
01:09:19you wonder if the two of them maybe had a brief
01:09:21coming together or some sort. Neat looking
01:09:23car that little Lola I think. Really?
01:09:25Very neat looking.
01:09:27Up front again Didier Theys and it's
01:09:29remarkable how quickly this car has
01:09:31come good when they first put that car together
01:09:33as you go back and watch Gavin, here's some of the
01:09:35debris left on the track
01:09:37from the side of that car when we suspect
01:09:39and he's widening the racing
01:09:41line just a little bit with that sweeping motion
01:09:43right there you saw the indication we are full course
01:09:45caution for this incident and John
01:09:47Bisignano is down in the number 20
01:09:49pit, John? David Benard in the
01:09:5120 car again more bad
01:09:53luck here in Homestead
01:09:55the gearbox has finally given up
01:09:57it had trouble with it from the very
01:09:59very start, David Benard will not
01:10:01make it back to the pits, he's parked it out
01:10:03on the circuit.
01:10:05So Pat Smith who we just saw there
01:10:07is going to be focusing entirely on
01:10:09John Paul's attempts at the front
01:10:11meanwhile we continue to watch Gavin
01:10:13trying to bring that car with the
01:10:15nose back into the pits
01:10:17but there's some of the debris that's why we're under
01:10:19full course yellow and
01:10:21some of the cars cycling through that portion of the track
01:10:23and Gavin's pretty good pace although he's not doing
01:10:25any good to that tire
01:10:27Well the tire's
01:10:29pretty expendable, it's probably not doing much damage
01:10:31good to the body work either way
01:10:33the tire is rubbing on it
01:10:35but whether it will attach again without those
01:10:37bits that were missing you saw at the side of the track
01:10:39I'm not sure, but anyway he's coming to pit lane now
01:10:41so he's made almost a full
01:10:43lap with that nose just hanging out
01:10:45extremely lucky, the thing
01:10:47flicked over his head
01:10:49Well up until this incident that team and
01:10:51the driver combination of Schubot and Gavin
01:10:53had really put on a very impressive run
01:10:55Well Oliver Gavin is a
01:10:57driver to be taken seriously
01:10:59very very fast young driver
01:11:01you know the good case
01:11:03in point he could be in Formula 1 now
01:11:05things have just gone a little bit better for him
01:11:07David there's the battle for second
01:11:09at GTU but should they be battling
01:11:11this is a full course yellow and they're looking mighty
01:11:13racy
01:11:15these guys are looking incredibly racy
01:11:17considering they are under full course caution
01:11:19obviously there's no question of having a position change
01:11:21here
01:11:2352 car can hang on there but they should
01:11:25be obviously
01:11:27driving perfectly
01:11:29I can understand their urgency in the sense that
01:11:31this is that yellow that we talked about them
01:11:33praying for earlier to get them up and close to
01:11:3581 but I mean
01:11:37you know they're getting loose coming off
01:11:39corners and showing the nose inside
01:11:41that's racy
01:11:43and I don't know the stewards might
01:11:45have a few thoughts on this but they are
01:11:47flying
01:11:49they certainly are flying for being under full course
01:11:51caution and here's the reason for the full course caution
01:11:53Oliver Gavin in the
01:11:55number 8 car, the nose off
01:11:57it looks like they might be attempting to put him out now
01:11:59without the nose
01:12:02well they dropped the rear
01:12:04off the jacks and indeed there goes
01:12:06Oliver Gavin sans nose
01:12:08trying to get this finished here at
01:12:12Welcome back everybody
01:12:14to the Nextel 250 as we're
01:12:16winding this one down and it has
01:12:18been a great race up at the
01:12:20front overall in a number of the classes
01:12:22and in fact one of the
01:12:24great battles of course we've had the overall battle
01:12:26we've had the GTU battle but coming up right there
01:12:28the yellow Camaro number 18 the
01:12:30TV Racing Enterprises entry
01:12:32right behind it is the 09 Spirit of
01:12:34Daytona entry those two cars
01:12:36same lap that is an outright
01:12:38battle for that class lead and
01:12:40with the yellow of course those two GTU cars
01:12:42that were running second and third the 66
01:12:44entry and the
01:12:46number 52 Safina Racing BMW
01:12:48have now been able to catch up to the back of the field
01:12:50it's been good for them but
01:12:52one has to suspect for the overall
01:12:54leader of the race Kevin Doran
01:12:56not a good time for this yellow
01:12:58Doran a full course yellow just one
01:13:00lap after you come in this has got to be frustrating
01:13:02and a disappointment for your team
01:13:04yeah it's pretty bad
01:13:06we haven't hit a yellow right now for
01:13:08three races so
01:13:10with the green
01:13:12we're in good shape I mean we were 22 seconds
01:13:14ahead of Dyson could have kind of
01:13:16cruised to the end you know a little bit
01:13:18it's not like you could park it but
01:13:20now with the yellow we're going to have a
01:13:22seriously tough race
01:13:24to the end and as it was
01:13:26if we had pitted a lap later after
01:13:28the yellow or during the yellow
01:13:30we could have held Dyson a lap down
01:13:32and it could have just
01:13:34been a walk in the park but that's the way
01:13:36it goes. There you have it
01:13:38the race can be won and lost
01:13:40in the pits
01:13:42I can see lights out in the pace car and behind
01:13:44Kevin Doran in the interview you saw Weaver and
01:13:46Baldy David and they were reliving the early part
01:13:48of this race and you love to drive like they do
01:13:50that's all it's about. And it was a pretty
01:13:52spectacular driving put up by both those guys
01:13:54particularly around here turns
01:13:5610 and 11 early on they just had a tremendous
01:13:58dice here for lap after lap.
01:14:00Pace car is in we are coming up to start
01:14:02lap 100 of 104 so we're
01:14:04near the end it's crucial
01:14:06and Didier Tej drops the hammer there's
01:14:08John Paul
01:14:10couple of the sports racer twos
01:14:12there is Herve Hare
01:14:14sits in third the rest of the pack
01:14:16Tej knows
01:14:18now he's got company much closer than they were
01:14:20earlier. Absolutely he knows that
01:14:22company is going to be pressing him very hard
01:14:24with just a few laps left he swoops
01:14:26through that turn. Paul there
01:14:28that downhill right hander there
01:14:30Oliver Gavin noseless still
01:14:32hanging on there pretty good really holding
01:14:34off Herve Hare in the 74
01:14:36car. And oh!
01:14:38Big moment there number 18
01:14:40the Levy Enterprises
01:14:42entry ran a little wide and
01:14:44wasting no time going right by was
01:14:46Doug Goad. The Levy car coming up
01:14:48again now as they come down to turn 6
01:14:50that's a crucial area
01:14:52some slower traffic now. Oh!
01:14:54They touch the 0-9 car
01:14:56looks a bit like it the 18
01:14:58That was very close I think that was the hybrid racing
01:15:00Riley and Scott
01:15:02Suddenly those cars feel
01:15:04awfully little right alongside one of those
01:15:06great big cars.
01:15:08That was a huge moment in the
01:15:10American GT category
01:15:12this time Goad gets forced wide
01:15:14and looks like the Levy machine
01:15:16is coming at it let's take a look at the replay
01:15:18A little push
01:15:20There's certainly a push
01:15:22but a little push. It's quite a push
01:15:24Oh!
01:15:26Mounts it off the 99 car does the 18
01:15:28car. Oh that's what slowed the 18 car up
01:15:30the 99 car pushed him off the road
01:15:32a bit. Yeah they bump pretty
01:15:34pretty hard forced him wide
01:15:36and of course the driver of Doug Goad's
01:15:38ability is not going to waste any time with that
01:15:40opportunity. Knifed
01:15:42underneath taking over the spot but
01:15:44it's not as though he's checking out
01:15:46although this is going to help if he can get by
01:15:48but so does, well does he the 18
01:15:50Watch for it
01:15:52Doug Goad there both of them
01:15:54in very heavy traffic here
01:15:56the 18 car just right
01:15:58behind Goad
01:16:00Goad belching tons of
01:16:02unburnt fuel out there on the overrun into turn 4
01:16:04Goad and
01:16:06Levy the battle
01:16:08for the American GT category
01:16:10and Levy closing right back
01:16:12up again doing a nice job
01:16:14not to let that bump rattle him too much
01:16:16and really mess up his rhythm
01:16:18and his concentration he's just focusing on getting back
01:16:20into it. Doug Goad's car too
01:16:22that engine doesn't look like it's belching out
01:16:24far too much smoke and flame on the overrun
01:16:26on gear shifts and braking like that
01:16:28it just doesn't seem to me like the pickup's probably
01:16:30real good on that car at the moment
01:16:32And behind you see the number 62
01:16:34Mazda Kudzu from Team Spencer Motorsports
01:16:36I don't know if that's engine or
01:16:38it's brake lock up but that car's smoking
01:16:40into the corners very frequently as well
01:16:44But up front right here see the tail
01:16:46of the engine and it doesn't look like Goad's missing
01:16:48too much on power. No I guess at the top
01:16:50end it's going pretty good which is what
01:16:52counts for a lot here
01:16:54Ooh a GTU car slipping between them there
01:16:56as they come off turn 11
01:16:58Levy's going to be able to. Just slow Levy up just a little bit
01:17:00not much
01:17:02This turn 1 has been
01:17:04the cause of a lot of moments here
01:17:06as the battle in HGT
01:17:08continues
01:17:10It's still Doug Goad out front
01:17:12A couple laps to go. Be right back
01:17:16Back at Homestead Miami
01:17:18the battle in American GT
01:17:20is heating up once again
01:17:22Levy taking a big run at Goad
01:17:24as they continue to work
01:17:26each other over here for the
01:17:28AGT lead. Two laps to go
01:17:30up front. It is still GDAT
01:17:32leading and here comes Levy down
01:17:34to the inside side by side
01:17:36through that corner
01:17:38still side by side through turn
01:17:407 down that long
01:17:42shoot down to that very tight turn
01:17:448 Dave. And Doug Goad
01:17:46on the right there has got the inside
01:17:48line for turn 8
01:17:50as they come up to that tight hairpin turn
01:17:52side by side and they touch going in
01:17:54there. The Levy car has gone off into
01:17:56the dirt. Just missed the gravel trap
01:17:58locked them all up there so Doug
01:18:00Goad with just a couple of laps left
01:18:02has left the 18 car floundering
01:18:04in the dirt. Can he catch it up?
01:18:06It's going to be unlikely. Very very tight
01:18:08indeed. Here is number
01:18:1027 your overall race leader
01:18:12that's Didier Thijs heading
01:18:14into that same complex of corners
01:18:16as through turn 7
01:18:18coming up to take
01:18:20the white flag once he gets around the track
01:18:22and Thijs as a matter of fact
01:18:24now on the final lap
01:18:26and amazingly he is now
01:18:28alone on the lead lap
01:18:30a report of a problem for John
01:18:32Paul Jr. And there's
01:18:34the 0-9 Goad in that incident
01:18:36he went to the lead David but he obviously cut a
01:18:38tire down. Wow yes he
01:18:40sure did cut that down when he banged
01:18:42into the Levy car going into
01:18:44turn 8. Meanwhile
01:18:46Thijs continues on around
01:18:48and it's the Robinson entry that
01:18:50has moved up into second although they were a lap
01:18:52down to Thijs
01:18:54and John Paul. Here comes Thijs
01:18:56celebrating big time
01:18:58with a huge win
01:19:00and David that comes in a car that
01:19:02just a couple months ago was not
01:19:04anything like that. There is John Paul
01:19:06stuck out on the track. We don't know what's wrong
01:19:08with the car but obviously some
01:19:10system has malfunctioned leaving
01:19:12boy oh boy John Paul
01:19:14in a bad luck. He wouldn't have any luck at all.
01:19:16It's unbelievable. Meanwhile
01:19:18Thijs continues on his cool down
01:19:20lap and as I was saying this car
01:19:22not long ago was a very different
01:19:24machine and when they
01:19:26first started it out huge development problems
01:19:28but under the guidance of Kevin Doran
01:19:30it's a very experienced driver as this car has
01:19:32come good in a hurry. Well it was a major
01:19:34change when they decided to take the Ferrari out
01:19:36and put the Judd V10 engine. They had to work
01:19:38on day and night on that car and they did it
01:19:40incredibly quickly before the
01:19:42C-Ring 12 hour it was and the car
01:19:44really after some developmental problems
01:19:46has really come good here at Homestead. Running
01:19:48very very competitively all weekend.
01:19:50And a big surprise second place
01:19:52in a matter of speaking
01:19:54for the Robinson racing in for mixed entry
01:19:56now in the hands of Irv Haer as they
01:19:58get second place with John Paul's problems
01:20:00lap down but none the less that's got
01:20:02to be huge in terms of points. Well I'll tell you
01:20:04two weeks ago Irv Haer was sitting at home gets a phone
01:20:06call comes down the very next day
01:20:08wins the race second in the next one
01:20:10that's not bad is it? Some old codger sitting at home.
01:20:12Pretty remarkable performance and
01:20:14look at Thijs as he gets a big wave from
01:20:16John Paul Jr. side of the track.
01:20:18Here's the TRP Racing
01:20:20Nissan Lowell ended up second in the new
01:20:22Sports Racer 2 category.
01:20:24Very strong run for this new program.
01:20:26Gary Tiller finishing up
01:20:28in the car. The Solutions team
01:20:30sponsorship on that machine.
01:20:32And a good look at that car.
01:20:34Great future in that category.
01:20:36And here Ron Johnson steps in
01:20:38for Terry Borchler at the driver change and brings
01:20:40that Celine Allen machine home with a huge win.
01:20:42And there's
01:20:44some great looking race cars out there.
01:20:46The GTO class and of course this one the Doran
01:20:48Lister with the V10 Judd
01:20:50engine looking absolutely beautiful on the track.
01:20:52A real race car. Very fast
01:20:54Diva to give you a look at the full field
01:20:56run down for the Grand Am Nextel 250.
01:20:58Final standings and top
01:21:00six all of the Sports Racer category.
01:21:02There's the Archangel Motorsports number
01:21:0422. Another win
01:21:06for that team Larry Oberto and Ryan Hampton
01:21:08doing a superb job. And there's
01:21:10number 81 the G&W Motorsports
01:21:12entry in GTU taking the win.
01:21:14Darren Law and Mike Fitzgerald having a
01:21:16superb day. And with the damage
01:21:18and stop for the 09 Spirit of Daytona
01:21:20Camaro number 18 the Levy Racing Camaro
01:21:22wins American GT. But overall
01:21:24it was a great run by the Doran Judd
01:21:26and John Bisigliano was with Didier Thijs.
01:21:28Didier Thijs one of your best
01:21:30drives ever. One of the most exciting wins
01:21:32you've had for some time now.
01:21:34Especially for two hours
01:21:36and 30 minutes
01:21:38we had a lot of pressure every lap
01:21:40but we managed to control
01:21:42the race at the end and
01:21:44I was very pleased with the setup the last
01:21:4645 minutes and
01:21:48what I have to do is make sure
01:21:50my tires doesn't
01:21:52dissipate on me and stay a good balance
01:21:54and they work fine and I could
01:21:56I could cover John behind me.
01:21:58Congratulations on a great win and keeping all that
01:22:00competition behind you. Thank you.
01:22:02Let's take a look at our
01:22:04drivers point standing. James Weaver continues
01:22:06to lead of course you got the bonus points for
01:22:08Daytona. Baldwin and Hare
01:22:10tied for second with their strong runs.
01:22:12Kellners and Scatarella tied
01:22:14for 6th spot. Bingham and Simo
01:22:16and John Fields still in the mix in
01:22:1810th. There's a look at the
01:22:20performance software 74 Hunting Ranch entry
01:22:22and with the win at Phoenix
01:22:24and 2nd place here at Homestead
01:22:26as we take a look at the owner's point standing
01:22:28they find themselves in the lead.
01:22:30Good run there for that
01:22:32Robertson Informant car.
01:22:34There you see the rest of the line 6th, 7th, 6th, 4th
01:22:36hybrid racing and Dyson racing teams out there.
01:22:38And when we come back
01:22:40Homestead Miami Speedway will visit with more
01:22:42of our class winners. Don't go away.
01:22:46The third round of the Grand American
01:22:48Road Racing Championship from Homestead Miami
01:22:50Speedway has been brought to you by Acura.
01:22:52Cars are our passion.
01:22:54Engineering is our art.
01:22:56And by Informix
01:22:58Software. Your new way to web.
01:23:08In the GTO division even with this
01:23:10spin Terry Borchler and Ron Johnson
01:23:12were able to bring that new Celine Allen
01:23:14BASF home improvement Mustang
01:23:16into victory circle first.
01:23:18A great accomplishment and with
01:23:20Terry Borchler, John Bisignano.
01:23:22Terry Borchler you almost, almost
01:23:24made it look easy.
01:23:26Well I don't know about that. It was pretty hot in the first run.
01:23:28I started the car and then got in
01:23:30at the end. The plan was to
01:23:32do a double at the beginning and with the yellows
01:23:34and that we kind of changed the strategy. But the track
01:23:36was really hard at the beginning. With the rain
01:23:38early this morning it really changed the
01:23:40track. But the guys did a great job
01:23:42because the car came to us at the end of the race
01:23:44and the track came to us and it was a good finish
01:23:46for the Celine Ford.
01:23:48That Celine Mustang can just about adapt
01:23:50to anything.
01:23:52As has been proven in these last two rounds
01:23:54undefeated and Borchler and Johnson
01:23:56as a result the team may lead the points.
01:23:58Montgomery third and then
01:24:00Roddenroth and Simon Gregg tied
01:24:02for fourth in the point standings
01:24:04in the GTO division.
01:24:06In a division that is coming along handily.
01:24:08There is a look at the winner in GTO
01:24:10Darren Law of course co-driving
01:24:12with Mike Fitzgerald. Darren Law
01:24:14who made his name in super touring racing
01:24:16adapting well to GTO
01:24:18and he is now down in the circle.
01:24:20Darren Law you definitely found the setup
01:24:22on this beautiful Porsche. Yeah we did.
01:24:24I need to thank G&W Motorsports for all the
01:24:26work they've done. They've done a lot of
01:24:28work. Cars great. Dunlops they lasted the
01:24:30whole race which is what we needed to get by
01:24:32with this. And I need to thank my co-driver Mike Fitzgerald
01:24:34did a great start. I just had to hold it
01:24:36together in the end. What about that start Mike?
01:24:38It went real well.
01:24:40Everything pretty much went according to plan all day.
01:24:42We had no problems. One
01:24:44clean pit stop under yellow.
01:24:46The G&W guys did great and the Dunlop tires
01:24:48were spectacular the whole day.
01:24:50Well the car 81 came out on top of maybe the most
01:24:52competitive class here, GTU.
01:24:54Absolutely great
01:24:56drive and as a result Fitzgerald
01:24:58now finds himself in a handy lead
01:25:00with points over Buckler and Collin.
01:25:02Then Darren Law his teammate here
01:25:04in the Porsche spot Rick Fairbanks
01:25:06in fifth.
01:25:08One of the great battles in this race was in American
01:25:10GT between the 0-9
01:25:12Spirit of Daytona and the eventual winner
01:25:14the number 18 entry and the two
01:25:16winning drivers are in victory circle
01:25:18and Sandy Heng is there. Sandy?
01:25:20John Levy and Michael Cohn
01:25:22John what a fantastic race
01:25:24trying to keep that 0-9 car behind
01:25:26you and Doug Goad.
01:25:28Incredible moments. What a battle.
01:25:30Well thank you very much. We both drove in real hard
01:25:32to the hairpin and we tried to outbrake
01:25:34him and I think he locked him up and kind of skid into my
01:25:36car and I had a little bit more tire. These
01:25:38BFGoodrich tires really hold up well under heat
01:25:40and it was hot out there today. So the crew
01:25:42last night we changed the transmission in the rear end
01:25:44and to come to victory lane is what it's all about.
01:25:46And Michael you kept it in there ready
01:25:48for an opportunity and then your partner was able
01:25:50to take it. That's what it's all about.
01:25:52I did what I had to do and he did what he had to do.
01:25:54We had a lot of grief this weekend.
01:25:56Two cars, rear end, transmission,
01:25:58motor. Our crew, we just
01:26:00owe a lot to our crew. They were there for the
01:26:02whole thing for us. They rebuilt
01:26:04everything in the cars. Two cars we went through.
01:26:06And we pulled it off. We did a great job.
01:26:08First time that we did it together.
01:26:10Michael Kona and John Levy.
01:26:12Thank you very much.
01:26:14Kudos and a reminder once again it's a team
01:26:16sport. Conway and Goad now
01:26:18leading the points. However you see
01:26:20Kona and Levy starting to chip away at it with a
01:26:22big win here at Homestead
01:26:24Miami. They're now fifth in the
01:26:26American GT driver point standing
01:26:28at this stage.
01:26:30Take a look at the owner's points. It's G&W
01:26:32Motorsports in the GT division leading
01:26:34over Genesis Racing, the Celine Allen Speed
01:26:36Lab, the racers group tied there.
01:26:38Six through ten, G&W Motorsports
01:26:40are the bookending things here with their 0-7
01:26:42entry. Back in the pack just
01:26:44a little bit. There's a look at 37
01:26:46John Field but behind him is the winner
01:26:48in the Archangel Motorsports
01:26:50SR2 category.
01:26:52Two very talented young drivers
01:26:54Ryan Hampton and Larry Oberto and they
01:26:56two are now with Sandy. We're here now with the
01:26:58winners of the Sports Racer 2 category. Larry
01:27:00Oberto, Ryan Hampton. What a drive there at the
01:27:02end. The stop and go penalty, you didn't let it
01:27:04get in your way. No, it's just a matter of
01:27:06you know, if you get a little bit over the revs and you
01:27:08miss it, you know, these
01:27:10things happen and it's unfortunate but
01:27:12I made the mistake. I did it myself
01:27:14so I had to come in but I wasn't going to let it. I wasn't going to
01:27:16get angry at it. It's a matter of really
01:27:18just staying calm, making sure
01:27:20you just keep your head down, keep driving
01:27:22around. You don't want to make a mistake out there.
01:27:24And Larry, put it on the pole.
01:27:26You were able to finish in the first in your class.
01:27:28It's got to be a great feeling. I feel
01:27:30great and Ryan did one heck of a
01:27:32job. He's a great teammate. I love having
01:27:34him and the Archangel crew is
01:27:36great and we have a crew guy
01:27:38that didn't make it. His mom
01:27:40is sick in the hospital and
01:27:42so this is a good way
01:27:44to bring it home for him.
01:27:46A great run. Both Oberto and Hampton showing their
01:27:48stuff in F2000 and making their
01:27:50name there. Boy, I'll tell you, two consecutive
01:27:52wins. Having a great season so far.
01:27:54Snow, Hainer and Sherman Tiller
01:27:56round out the top five
01:27:58in points. And David, once again,
01:28:00another superb race
01:28:02at the Grand American Road Racing Championship here at
01:28:04Nelson Lane. Absolutely, right through the class
01:28:06of GTU is a battle from beginning to end.
01:28:08GTO is a bit of a breeze for the number
01:28:10five car. Terrific battle for the lead there
01:28:12between that Doran car and of course
01:28:14the Weaver in the number 16 car.
01:28:16And in GTU, I mean,
01:28:18throughout the field, the racing was absolutely
01:28:20spectacular. Now you can watch more
01:28:22of this type of racing.
01:28:24For the Grand Am Championship, we'll be live
01:28:26Memorial Day Monday from Lime Rock.
01:28:28For David Hobbs, John Bisignano
01:28:30and Sandy Heng, I'm Greg Kramer. Thanks
01:28:32so much for joining us here at Homestead Miami.
01:28:34See you next time.
01:28:54.
01:28:56.
