00:00Yeah
00:04The IndyCar series is presented in association with champion spark plugs and Valvoline
00:12Al Unser jr. The king of the beach
00:16His mind is filled with memories of four straight checkered flags on these streets
00:21Nothing has been able to stand between little Al and victory lane at Long Beach. He has left many competitors in his wake
00:31And he comes here now in search of his fifth consecutive win
00:41Michael Andretti last year he drank from the PPG Cup as the IndyCar champion
00:46But this season has begun with only one pole and six PPG points
00:51Michael has pushed himself and his car and captured his third straight pole through the concrete canyons of Long Beach
00:58He has memories of a terrifying pit crash that ended last year's run
01:03But now he has a new Ford engine and needs to get his season back on track
01:10Eddie Cheever is walking tall after a career-best second-place finish last week at Phoenix
01:15He too is one of the Ford few and hopes to ride the momentum of his Phoenix performance
01:22Looking now for his first ever IndyCar win
01:29It's Ford versus Chevy power and
01:32Unser versus the field
01:34As the IndyCars are ready to challenge these mean streets in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach
01:58IndyCar is set and ready to go racing already rolling on the circuit heading for the final corner on now
02:27What is a shortened circuit only seven turns one point five nine miles around?
02:32That's Michael Andretti that has the pole and Danny Sullivan outside the front row with Scott Pruitt and Allenser jr.
02:38In the second row the green flag comes out and we're racing in Southern, California
02:43As they scream down Shoreline Boulevard and head for the very first turn
02:47It's Michael Andretti still in front Scott Pruitt and Allenser jr. Come up to challenge
02:53Already Sullivan drops back already a substantial move by Allenser jr. Who has won the last four races here. He's now running second
03:02Danny Sullivan has started on the front row move backwards on the start and now it is little Al that chases Michael Andretti the pole sitter
03:10Incredible the domination by the answers and the Andretti's at this track the rest of the field strings true
03:16You may notice there are four turns missing there as they come up to battle for the lead
03:20It's a straight shot down seaside now and one car ran straight off on seaside
03:26One car straight off the end of the circuit yellow flags fly in that corner
03:31And it's Mario Andretti Mario Andretti into the tire barrier. It looks as if he is. All right, though
03:37The rest of the field now answering yellow flags all around the circuit boy
03:42You can see what a job those tires do Paul. It's just like going into a balloon
03:45Let's take another look at it here
03:47Here it is as they came into the corner and Mario brushes the inside wall
03:52Rush the inside wall shot him out straight
03:54He couldn't turn back then and Eddie Cheever is on board camera view looking backwards as Mario touched him coming to the inside
04:04Boy, that was close. It's wondered what the worst net but follows tired barriers
04:08They're just like running into a balloon that really Steve Mario a lot of problem
04:11He has damaged Jeevers car, so that's going to be at least two men out of the race Mario had qualified seventh
04:17You see his crew there a most remarkable set of circumstances here on the first lap at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach
04:24Let's go back now and take a look at how they qualified in two days of qualifying here
04:32On the pole, it's Michael Andretti his 22nd career poll for the 1986 Long Beach winner and Danny Sullivan is outside
04:39He's twice finished third in this event in the second row
04:42It's Scott Pruitt who began his IndyCar career here in 1988 and Alan sir, jr
04:46Is outside going for his fifth straight win here in Long Beach in the third row Emerson Fittipaldi twice a runner-up here
04:53And Eddie Cheever who ran an impressive second last week at Phoenix the fourth row on the inside is Mario Andretti a three-time winner of this
05:00Event and Bobby Rahal is outside who led wire-to-wire last week in the Phoenix 200 in the fifth row
05:06It's Rick Mears looking for his first win on these streets and John Andretti who is currently sixth in the point standings in the sixth
05:12Row the inside is Scott Brayton
05:14He has two top-gen efforts in the last two years on this track and Gregor Boyd tech making his second start for AJ Boyd's team
05:21The seventh row is Jimmy Vassar driving a car in which Bobby Rahal finished second here last year and Roberto Guerrero
05:28Driving for drag racer Kenny Bernstein in the eighth row
05:31It's Tony Bettenhaus and a 14-year veteran of the IndyCars and Ted Travis a sophomore driver who finished a strong sixth here a year
05:38Ago, the ninth row is Scott Goodyear who ran seventh in this race last year and Brian Till making his IndyCar debut
05:46in the 10th row
05:47it's Eric Bachelar a graduate from the Indy lights ranks and
05:51Robicio Barbosa in his first start here since 1987 in the 11th row
05:56Hiro Mashusta a third-year driver from Japan and Joby Marcello making his third career IndyCar start in the final row
06:03It's Buddy Lazear a former ski racer from Colorado and Terrell Palmroth of Finland
06:10That was the way they lead it. They lined up leading to the green flag
06:14Now here was a situation in this morning's session as we look at a live shot of Scott Pruitt
06:20He had his problems during the warm-up as he came on to shoreline
06:24Which is the pit straight here everything appeared to be normal
06:28But watch though as he headed down into the very first corner, which is a hard right-hander
06:33Passing under the Texaco bridge just ahead down shifting and suddenly
06:40And
06:41The car head on into the tire barrier at the end now looking at it again
06:46Apparently what happened was the front brakes failed on the car because if you watch that front tire
06:51It never stopped rolling Scott brushed it into the wall
06:56Got it pointed back straight and wisely took the tire barrier right straight on which is the safest way to take it
07:04And of course the important thing is to understand that Scott Pruitt sustained terrible injuries to his legs
07:09Two years ago in an accident where the brakes failed so it was a real nightmare for him what happened
07:14But as you can see, he's third in the lineup now
07:16That's the backup car and we are ready to go racing once again
07:20They have the situation over on the seaside straight cleared up Mario Andretti's car out of the way
07:25And we're back running again as Michael Andretti leads Al Hunter jr. Down into the corner
07:30But allow folks his nose inside Danny Sullivan in the meantime climbs all over the back end of Scott Pruitt's car
07:36It's a battle for first second third and fourth Bobby Rahal comes up to make a move as well
07:41Last year little Al was able to surprise Michael and sneak by him into the lead
07:45He was never headed after that now, obviously Michael has seen him this time. There's going to be no surprise move
07:50That's going to work now
07:51You can watch Michael pull over and try to block a little out going into that turn at the other long straightaway
07:55But the main thing is you look how aggressive little Al is this early on and remember everybody's full of fuel
08:0140 gallons of fuel standing right behind the drivers
08:03Here's where the trouble was before but everybody at the front gets through smoothly as they come to the conclusion now of lap number nine
08:12Nine laps the scheduled distance
08:15105 laps here at Long Beach at ten laps up from in past year
08:20Danny Sullivan begins to challenge Scott Pruitt again
08:22No challenge at the front of the field though Al Hunter jr.
08:25Is in pursuit of Michael as they go under braking and Al Hunter jr.
08:29Comes to the inside as Michael locks him up for just a second
08:32That just shows you how hard Michael is trying Paul and look at Sullivan and Pruitt as Sullivan ducks under Pruitt
08:38Well, they almost got together there
08:40But it shows you how hard and how important passing is early in the race that the guys are really trying hard
08:45It is very important to get your position just as early on as you can
08:49It makes you wonder too if Pruitt was a little conservative coming into that turn because of his brake failure earlier
08:54I don't think that I'd stomp down on him too hard and I'm sure test them plenty early interestingly
09:00He breaks with his left foot
09:02So Scott Pruitt down to position of chasing Danny Sullivan as the rest of the field comes through
09:07There's Emerson Fittipaldi with Bobby Rahal last week's winner at Phoenix right behind him and in single file as they come through the tightest
09:14Turn on the course. That's the hairpin and back on the pit straight, which is shoreline drive
09:19That's probably no more than a 30 miles an hour turn right at the bottom of it. Paul. It's a really a hairpin
09:24You got a glimpse there in the pits the 30 car from VCO Barbossa
09:28They've had some trouble with that machine
09:30The black and yellow car that you're about to see go by the screen right there is Bobby Rahal
09:35He had a bad time in qualifying with some problems with the car
09:38But his crew chief Jim McGee told me that on the lap that his engine blew
09:42He'd run a lap fast enough to be on the front row of the grid. I expect to see him move up
09:46There he is right there. Bobby Rahal who won last week in Phoenix, of course at the beginning of any new season
09:52There's plenty of experimentation going on
09:54That's certainly true in the true in the leader Michael Andretti scar brand-new Ford engine there in the second place car
10:00That's a new chassis the Galmer for Allen's or jr
10:03Danny Sullivan is a Galmer as well and that's a brand new chassis for Scott through it as well
10:07So Bobby Rahal is really well
10:10I shouldn't mention Emerson to the Pauly who sits right behind through it and he is a brand new Chevrolet engine to Bobby Rahal
10:16Is the only one that is really running a tried-and-true combination Bobby?
10:21Yeah, well, that's that thing that's worked good last week at Phoenix
10:24We thought for example that the new Ford we're going to be stronger than any of it at all equal down and Rahal
10:30Good handling out get everything else and the entire history of this race prior to the start today
10:37784 laps have been run by the IndyCars
10:40700 of those have been led by either an Andretti or an answer
10:46Only 84 laps have been led by anybody else and had ready and an answer is in first and second place right now
10:53They are selling t-shirts here, which talk about the picture Michael and Al in
11:00Boxing gloves ready to duke it out for 105 laps
11:03And I think those t-shirts are a real vision of what's going on here
11:07You can watch as they came off that hairpin corner
11:09You wonder why Michael gets that much of a jump like a little out if they were so close coming out of turn
11:14And that's because whichever turbo charging lights the first they can't jump out about 10 15 yards on the other car
11:20You get a great view from high above the circuit here through the first and second turn now
11:25Making the right-hand turn for turn number three
11:29As they continue to work on one another now, here's that new section normally right here
11:35They would make a right instead they continue straight on underneath the promenade
11:40Underneath the garage area and right down all the way down seaside before they make this right hand turn
11:47That's a turn six Paul and that straightaway is so fast because it's wide open from clear back in turn four
11:53That's a lot of speed maybe even faster than the front straightaway, which we're coming on to right now
11:59The the changes in the course are because they're going to expand the convention center
12:06So there's the way they line up with now 12 laps complete in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach a
12:12Tremendous run already and as suggested it's answer and and ready battling once again
12:23You
12:28Can see Danny Sullivan is now closing down on the back end of Allender jr. And little Al
12:35Runs well behind Michael Andretti, you know a couple of weeks ago the London Sun an English paper with an enormous circulation
12:42You see Danny Sullivan there at the top of the screen
12:45Feature Danny as one of the guys that could make Fergie happy and other choices were John Kennedy jr
12:51George Hamilton Bob Carrey, you know, I believe Danny might go Roberto Guerrero comes into the pits
12:57This is lap 37. So we should see the start of all the scheduled pit stops here shortly
13:03So this one would seem to be a little bit early given the long yellow period that we saw early on
13:09Nevertheless, the stop looks to be fairly routine. Well, it does it looks to be totally routine
13:14But here's some more coming in here's Rick Mears and there's gonna be a whole bunch of them coming in
13:18That's off the first bit let's go to Gary Gerald and we get our first look at the Andretti team in action
13:24This is Michael's Newman Haas team. He of course won his first ever IndyCar race here six years ago
13:301986 on the streets of Long Beach
13:31He's been dominant in the early going everything appears to be smooth as they have him off the jacks and he's underway already nice stop
13:40The Michael Andretti screams back in the action Jack a rude
13:43Well, the action is taking place down here and in the Al Unser jr
13:46Pit and they were fading back Paul because they had a problem with the right rear tire
13:50They made a change in tire pressures and he is off and away but that accounted for his fading there in the last couple of laps
13:57Remember last year when Emerson Fittipaldi and Michael got together
14:00These pits are still very very tight and that was Danny Sullivan
14:05But with the pit stop was able to get out ahead of Al Unser jr
14:09So Sullivan moves up to second place as a result of the pit crew just to reiterate
14:14These are teammates and it'll be interesting to see whether Al Unser jr
14:18Who had been running stronger than Sullivan earlier will be let by by Sullivan. Sullivan is having a
14:24Serious problem two cars one Marcello the other Eric Bachelar both in a runoff area
14:30There is some debris there
14:32So one would have to assume contact
14:34But we'll wait for an official report that looks like a lot of paper laying on the ground
14:38Paul they probably had some contact because it's too strange for both of them to be there at the same time
14:42Oh my car is totally empty. Don't look. Well, I think that's there from before and I think
14:49Ike Bachelor got there just now
14:51So now emergency vehicles out on the course the double yellow flags at the start finish line
14:56They should send the pace car out very shortly and that will come at a most opportune time for the leaders to have completed their stops
15:08Oh
15:15Look at this Scott Goodyear, he's picked something up there on the back wing
15:23Bobby any idea what that might be looks like a piece of paper hanging up on there because it's too far forward to be a
15:28Piece of aluminum or carbon fiber Paul shouldn't affect anything
15:31Of course, you consider the the Rick mere situation as the pace car comes off. They're gonna leave him right there
15:37Problem possibly passing under the yellow in the first race pace car placement questionable at Phoenix last week
15:43here it is again as they come back to the green flag and
15:47Rick Mears will have a full mile and a half to try to make up because those are the leaders right behind him
15:53Michael and ready followed by Danny Sullivan and Alan's or jr
15:56This is the Scott stop-and-go penalty because Scott Goodyear ran over his tire
16:01During that yellow flag on the exit of the pits
16:03That's a bad thing to have happen at a track like the Long Beach with all these turns and a straight course
16:08It's rough for these stop-and-go penalties. And of course what they do is they hold the stop-and-go penalty
16:13Until they go green again
16:18Let's go to Gary Jarrell and Paul there was more than that stop-and-go they adjusted the front wings
16:23But there was damage on the side panel of the rear wing on the right side. They had to rip it away
16:29He's now back on course whether that'll affect the downforce of the handling
16:32He's about to find out we saw that flapping in the breeze. So that was part of the side panel
16:37That was part of the side panel and they ripped it off
16:39They've got it down here underneath the toolbox now on the near side of the pit wall
16:42There you see it as they made the stop-and-go indeed
16:44They had to rip a whole section of the side panel off the car
16:48That was a piece of carbon fiber and it really isn't gonna bother the handling at all
16:51Danny Sullivan charges alongside of Michael and ready. It's a fight for the lead Alan's or jr
16:57Is right there you could throw a blanket over the front three cars
17:00Just so everybody knows when these guys come in for the pit stop. They always get minor Jeff
17:04Oh, look at Danny's Danny darts down inside of Michael had some problem and now Alan's or jr
17:10Comes around Michael is suddenly back rolling at speed. What could it be a misgear?
17:14He definitely has some problems and he probably has a mini engine getting started problem
17:19No, and the fight continues for the lead is Alan's or jr
17:22Now comes inside of Danny Sullivan and Alan's or jr
17:25Will be the leader of the race so just in the space of one lap
17:28The lead has changed twice looks like a vulture finding fresh meat as soon as something happened to Michael, right?
17:34Whatever happened to Michael might still be affecting him as he appears to fall back just a little bit as they come out of the
17:39Pit straight again there comes Danny Sullivan through
17:42Alan's or jr. Is back in front for straight wins. Can he do it again this year?
17:47Well, he's in the key position Michael's either lost a gear in the transmission
17:50Which is quite possible fall or he's having fuel injection problem. Most likely he's lost a gear in his transmission
17:56Well Emerson Fittipaldi has also moved around Michael now
17:58Scott Pruitt is right there trying as they come off the second turn and head for turn three Michael slows completely and the rest of
18:05The field cycles pass. He's trying to get out of the way
18:07He's really being a good sport about this because he realizes he's a lame duck and he doesn't want to miss all the other guys
18:12Up about had a wreck up in the front just a little bit ago
18:16Be a lot of radio communication with this pit as Carl Haas and his crew are watching what's happening Gary Gerald indeed
18:22They are and it is gearbox problem. So another and ready first. It was John with a gearbox now
18:27It's Michael and a tough luck that plagued him in the season opener, Australia. Then a Phoenix has caught him again at Long Beach
18:33He rolled back into the pit area problem in the gearbox taking him out of the race
18:39Don't forget though last year after three races Michael Andretti
18:43Trailed in the PPG standings by 34 points and still came back to his great championship
18:48Let's go down to the pits and Gary
18:50Yeah, he stayed in the cockpit as they rolled it all the way back into the paddock area
18:53We've seen three cars come out of this race with gearbox problems Michael
18:57What is it about these street circuits that make it so tough on the gearbox?
19:01Well, you're always in the low gear putting a lot of torque through
19:05You know the whole drivetrain and when you do that
19:08You know, you put a lot of strain and things break but you know
19:12The biggest problem was we didn't have enough miles of testing on this
19:15It may have broke testing if we would have had more miles with this new car, but we didn't three consecutive races with bitter disappointment now
19:22But then I remember last year that's the way that season started and you won a championship
19:26Yeah, but at least we had a fourth place going in the end. We don't have anything going into Indy
19:31So this one this one hurt big time. Well the month of May we hope will be more promising. Thank you Mike. Thank you
19:38Well, it's a simple solution. He just comes back with an Indy win and everything will be fine Tony Benton housing
19:43Breaches down into the cockpit of his car
19:45He was running 16 prior to pulling the car off the edge of the circuit and it appears that Tony's day is done as well
19:53That's kind of rare to have this many cars falling out and all but transmissions have always been a problem here in Long Beach
20:00Talk about those tight gears
20:01They run this whole part of the track in second gear then accelerate on the back straight with their starting on to that
20:08After one more turn here
20:10He's in second now
20:11He's in going into third and fourth and fifth and sixth down the back and then on the other end which he's approaching at about
20:18175 miles an hour
20:19He will go down actually in the first gear
20:22Which is really tough on a transmission in the cars out of the race thus far of course Mario and Greti and Eddie Cheever on
20:29The very first lap with contact from Rizzo Barbosa had his brakes go Jody Marcello John and ready
20:37Michael and ready and Scott Brayton all out with gearbox problems and Gregor Poytek had a hole in his headers and so
20:45Had to retire and that we don't yet have an official reason for Tony Benton housing to retire for all that
20:50We've had better racing closer racing and more action than we've had for several years here at Long Beach
20:55Change in the circuit certainly have kept the cars together as we watch Danny Sullivan now with Emerson Fittipaldi just behind him and this of
21:03Course is a battle for second place. Allens or jr. Is just ahead with the lead
21:07You know, we have a we have in the first two places kind of interesting Galmer chassis the first year
21:13It is brand new cars designed and built by the Rick Dallas people
21:17Well, that's something kind of new and different to have those cars going fast and leading the races this early in the season
21:23Saturday on ABC Sports
21:25the pressure is on as we've got a car off and then Scott Goodyear quick little spin kick the clutch in kept the engine going and
21:32Stays in the fight Scott Goodyear was running in sixth and it looked like he may have been able to hold on to that position
21:38It's a break. You know, that's at the end of the long front straightaway and brakes get awfully hot here in Long Beach
21:45God he went in it too much rear brake on the car. He just locked out and spun around
21:50He did a nice job
21:52Yes, he did Sam and very similar to maybe what happened to Scott front
21:56Of course Scott didn't have any front brakes as we saw here
21:59He puts the clutch in because these cars don't have starters and if you stall them you're done
22:03Well, it takes a smart driver not to kill the engine
22:16Stay tuned for World League action from New York

24:05only on goodyear eagle radials
24:09You
24:12Why because the mercedes engineers wanted that way and goodyear makes it that way
24:29And here comes Bobby ray hall as he moves inside scott pruitt and picks up fourth place
24:34So bobby ray hall now beginning to move up through the field and scott pruitt
24:39Well that backup car is looking very strong
24:41You know, I started mentioned on the transmissions if one of those teeth gets caught in between the gears
24:46Sometimes it splits the entire case of the transmission apart. That's thousands of dollars
24:51Maybe twenty five thousand dollars where the damage fell
24:54Ray hall incidentally cooled his tires for a lap or two when he was behind scott pruitt and you notice that once he made his
25:00Move ahead of he's really put the hammer down
25:02He's going to try to pull away two or three tenths of a second and convince scott pruitt that he can't counter-attack
25:0856 laps are complete the 105 lap scheduled distance and now danny sullivan closing in
25:15At the end of shoreline on the leader allancer jr. He darts out to take a look pitapaldi closes in from third place
25:23Let's go down now jack. What about danny sullivan?
25:25Well paul the reason danny sullivan's beginning to pick the pace up a little bit
25:28Do you remember when scott pruitt had his problem? They cut short the practice session by three and a half minutes the team of
25:36Both allancer jr. And also danny sullivan didn't get to scuff in the total number of tires they wanted
25:42So on that last pit stop this team danny sullivan's team elected to put the non-scuff tires on
25:48Knowing that if they could hold on until they got scuffed in that they would come into play and they could resume
25:54A really fast pace and that's what's happening now
25:56Well jack that and the fact that when danny looks in his rearview mirrors
25:59Look what he sees emerson pitapaldi. He is under a lot of pressure
26:03This race is really getting tense at the front here
26:06And one of the reasons for that sam is everybody was a little concerned about fuel
26:10So everybody stayed a little bit out of the throttle
26:12They didn't short shift, but they stayed out of the throttle now. Everyone feels they've got plenty of fuel
26:16They're letting all the stops out danny sullivan trying to move inside in the first turn
26:21Darned it out couldn't get past and so he continues to chase al unser jr in third place
26:27It is still emerson pitapaldi
26:30Good view of the front end of these new galmer cars the wing assembly
26:34Which you see there on danny sullivan's car designed by alan mertens to channel the air up over the tires in a way to reduce
26:42The aerodynamic drag of those front tires when gary gerald and I talked to alan mertens yesterday at some length
26:49Mertens refused to divulge the real secret of this front end and kept him covered up
26:53But you can see it now because it's in a race. Well, they really can't cover him up
26:57I don't know why they do that anyway, but by the same token what it's doing sam is trying to put the air where
27:03Steel goes underneath the tunnel. That's what really holds these cars to the ground the tunnels underneath the car
27:09That's where the ground effects really come in and if the wings are a strong
27:13Uh design the air doesn't go underneath the tunnels good time to time
27:17You can get a good idea of the tunnels not on this shot on some a little lower
27:21They are the open spaces underneath the two sides of the car
27:26And which makes it just like a vacuum cleaner actually sucks the car right to the ground
27:31A little negative pressure under there and the cleaner you can get the air into it. The better it's going to work
27:36That's jim basser the stars and stripes car in the pits
27:39Jim, hey holds that car guy that used to race with us many years ago basser
27:44Of course that came from former atlantic last year and he's really quite good paul
27:48And by the way came up to me and said, you know, that's pretty expensive sports changed a little bit
27:53You bet it is. This is the top of the order 16 and a half seconds for jimmy basser. That's a good stop for a new crew
28:01And there is the 21 car buddy lazer
28:04As he comes in and out of the pits
28:06He's been in and out all day here at the race having a lot of problems
28:10But he needs to get a good break and have a couple of good races buddy
28:13Lazier in second grade won a reading contest. Does that sound like a big deal?
28:17Well, it was because buddy was dyslexic it still is and he had memorized the material, you know
28:23Three-time world champion jackie stewart is also dyslexic
28:27Uh and like stewart buddy has extraordinary drive and determinations never let the dyslexia stand in his way
28:34He's a college graduate savagely good skier. And of course at 24 years old. He's a terrific driver third place emerson
28:41Fittipaldi and jackaroo and paul. This is a critical stop for them
28:45They wanted to come in a little early so they could get the better rubber on
28:48But what is going to take the most time is they need every ounce that is in the fuel tank. They're shaking it
28:54He's down and away
28:5614.8 seconds a very quick stop
28:59Now the thing about him though is coming in early. That's a roger penske design roger thought of that because there's no traffic
29:06Look, he came in with no traffic. He left with no traffic all the fuel
29:10They had could go in the car anyway, so it was good thinking on roger's part emerson
29:14Fittipaldi comes in with 30 laps to go in the end of the race as well within the fuel window that they have already
29:21Responded to so we'll keep an eye on what it will do in terms of positioning on the race course as allens or jr
29:27And danny sullivan continue to battle it out to the lead. It was a good time to stop of course
29:32Unless there's a full course yellow between now and the time that the two leaders have to make their stop
29:37But historically sam, we don't have full course yellows and roger penske's team are gambling people
29:44They go for wins rather than just finishes boy. I agree with you. I think it was a good point
29:48I think in fact what you're thinking is historically they don't have full course yellows toward the end of the race
29:52We've already had two here today and that in fact is a little bit unusual
29:57So they are taking a gamble
29:59Allens or jr still being chased by danny sullivan as rick mears comes into the pits rick running back in seventh place
30:06Uncharacteristically far back even on a road racing course, which he has not excelled at over the last few years since the injury to his feet
30:14Those are the new penske cars also and they
30:16It looks like they're going to be very fast
30:19on the tracks like indianapolis and like michigan and etc
30:23But on the road circus here in long beach, the penske team has always had problems. It seems like
30:28New nigel bennett designed car brand new engine in that car allens or jr
30:33Still in front jackaroo and paul. They are going to gamble. They're making a big change just moments ago
30:39They rolled away the set of tires that they were going to use and they rolled up on the fronts
30:43They broke a set literally the fronts are scuffed. They're worn tires on the back
30:48They're going to put two literally brand new tires on the car. So that's changed their set thinking
30:54As you see scott pruitt come in for his stop
30:57Still having a pretty good day scott pruitt running in fifth. You saw the sign said let's know how your brakes are
31:04That's a question brakes and reset your fuel meter
31:07Yeah, which means reaching up to the dash and pushing a button and it resets the menu in the computer
31:13And that's I think he just did it
31:14Yeah, that's very important because that's what gets the computer going to tell the driver so he can tell the guy
31:20Either by radio what his fuel is doing what's fuel consumption?
31:23But remember we've only got about 24 25 laps in the race
31:27So fuel is going to be easy for most of right now that stop ran rather long at 23 seconds for scott pruitt
31:34Bumped him to sixth place scott. Goodyear got around
31:37And allenger jr. There's the crew laid out for bobby. Rahal's car
31:40He's running in third now, and he's only three seconds back going into the stop
31:45He's really been coming up all the crews are ready for the leaders now
31:48Little al is just three tenths of a second ahead of his teammate danny sullivan and bobby
31:54Rahal is three seconds back from that now
31:56This is going to really be something when they come in the pits
31:59We're really going to have to follow that close because same team same general bunch of guys work together and practice their pit stops together
32:06So it's going to be interesting to see how it comes out
32:08This is where the pressure is really on the crewman waiting for their car to arrive at the pits
32:12Incredible and allenger jr. Makes his turn into the pit area and he comes down for his stop
32:18So allenger jr. Is in jack
32:21And paul it's like precision craftsmen as they go to work. Let's listen
32:24Oh
32:28They've changed the rear tires as we said brand new rear tires old
32:32Back tires that clean the radiator area and they're away at 12.4. Let's go to gary. Gerald and bobby
32:38Rahal we had him at 11.7 as he hustles right out behind he was further up toward pit in
32:44So he's got to try to make up that distance, but carl hogan leading the cheers. This is a terrific stop
32:49Danny sullivan stayed out on the course picked up the lead allenger jr. Bobby
32:54Rahal emerson fittipaldi have all made their stops the rules of most teams are the guy that's leading between the two cars
33:01He pits first the guys running second in the team race
33:05Pits next bobby. Rahal goes next little alex and then he got held up a little bit by scott. Goodyear coming in
33:11Because it's so important when this man right here was that close behind him first place danny sullivan in jack
33:17and paul
33:18They have not had any problems whatsoever. Other than that one little tire snap loop. They are taking on fuel. They've finished the exchange
33:26The fuel they still have plenty in the tank
33:30And here comes al answer jr. Off of the last corner as danny sullivan
33:35Kicks the throttle and roars out of the pits. Can danny maintain the lead with little al on the charge little al screaming down?
33:42Toward the first turn now they'll join right down there at the end of the straightaway
33:46Here is sullivan maneuvering into the corner. Here is al answer jr
33:49Coming right in behind him
33:51So the battle is on the pit crews did their job the final stops are complete
33:55And danny sullivan is still in front now that shows you one little hold up by scott goodyear
34:01He just happened to be not his fault. It happened to be coming in the middle out there
34:05That has put little al back this far for sure
34:07They say races are won in the pits and there is a perfect example of it right here
34:12And al answer jr is right there and closing in he looked to the inside
34:16He is going to do everything he can to worry danny sullivan now as they come toward the hairpin now
34:22Danny sullivan is out in front
34:24But little al is still doing everything he can the decision may come at the end of this long straightaway
34:29As they come on to the pit straight al answer jr is set up trying to catch danny sullivan
34:34But danny sullivan pulls a little bit away still al answer jr. Now as they come to peak rpms
34:40Approaching 13 000 rpms closes in and little al comes to the inside and al answer jr
34:46Picks the lead up again from danny sullivan as i've said many times
34:49Paul there is an anybody that could drive in to a turn from high speed as deep as little al can
34:55He knew that I could watch him when he came off the hairpin
34:58How hard he was crouching on behind back of danny and I knew he was going to try a pass right there
35:03And I don't think danny was 100 confident on those new tires to you bobby
35:07He seemed tentative during that lap that he was leading
35:10At the race driver school, they'll tell you you do all your braking before you do all your turning
35:15I guarantee you that didn't happen here and little al was modulating those brakes as he turned in made a little move to the outside
35:21And then swept right down inside of danny sullivan
35:25Now it is little al al answer jr. That has the lead of the race having just taken it away from danny sullivan
35:37So
35:49After battling through the regular season the nhl survivors are through to the playoffs wednesday night at 10 30 on screensport
35:58And
36:03The pit crews have done their jobs the final stops are complete 84 laps of the 105 lap scheduled distance is complete
36:09Thus far it is al answer jr. Now inching away from his teammate. Danny sullivan
36:14You can see bobby ray home with the stop picked up third place emerson pitipaldi dropping to fourth
36:20And scott cruitt in fifth right from the time when renn rooney of toyota gave the call to start engines
36:26We've had a great day in the indy cars, but it's also been a great weekend with the pro celebrity race
36:32One of the great weekend events here is in fact the toyota pro celebrity two years ago
36:37Our colleague jack maroon participated in the race and was on hand to report this year's run
36:45This year's toyota pro celebrity race saw plenty of action the annual affair pits 16 drivers and identical toyota celicas
36:52But fans knew early on that instead of iroc they were witnessing irec first turn first lap
36:59Ian zeering of beverly hills 90210 mike bielmer and joe amato connect with the tire wall
37:04Coach star craig t. Nelson showed early muscle until tim allen of home improvement used more power to park him
37:12Nelson tried to continue but the damage was terminal ending the day for the leader of the screaming eagles
37:18Even the pros weren't spared in this crash fest
37:20Former indy 500 winner parnelli jones collided with bielmer and then allen in desperate need of binford super brakes gets into it
37:28Tim minus his trusty assistant al culminated his day with this incredible pirouette
37:37At the checkered flag pj jones son of parnelli and an imsa regular took the victory
37:41Second place went to off-road racer rod millen and nhra top fuel drag racer
37:46Joe amato won the celebrity portion, by the way allen finished 13th
37:54And like any great race
37:56Eventually becomes chris poop the promoter here has turned this from a single race into a wonderful weekend happening
38:04On the streets of long beach in the toyota grand prix of long beach
38:08The battle now is the indy cars and it indeed is a fight
38:11Allenser jr has picked up the lead of the race in his valvoline car number three
38:16His teammate danny sullivan sits about a second and a half back
38:19You get a glimpse of him from time to time bobby ray hall runs in third place fit of paul d ford scott
38:25Pruitt fifth and scott goodyear in sixth the crowd is reacting tremendously to this race every time the leaders go by
38:33They come to their feet in all the years of racing at long beach we started back in 1975
38:39I think this may be the best race. We've seen the race summary after 85 laps
38:44He's led 38 of the 85 average speed is at 189.9 miles an hour. And of course we've had
38:52Two different full course crossings 11 cars out. Most of those are gearbox problems
38:57Yes, they have paul, but looks like the cars are left back in now
39:01No gearbox problems
39:02I've just been timing little al and he's just slowly pulling away from danny sullivan and mostly by traffic whatever they catch
39:10Let's remember how allenser jr got into this position. He has of course that onboard camera
39:16He was chasing his teammate danny sullivan just a few laps ago
39:21And here was little al's point of view as they came onto the pit straight
39:25Of course the next turn always a critical turn because it's a sharp turn at the end of a long straightaway
39:30We talk about his smoothness as a driver and bobby made the great point about how late he can break watch how deftly he does
39:36This you see he doesn't lock a wheel. He doesn't jerk the car from side to side. It's a perfect move
39:44So allenser jr
39:46Is out in front his teammate runs in second place both of these cars brand new galmers
39:52And jackaroo they were designed by alan merton
39:55Absolutely paul and i'm with him right now and alan you've got to be absolutely ecstatic to see your galmer chassis running
40:02So well here at long beach. Well, naturally, of course I am. I mean, we're all pretty excited
40:06But as usual, it's uh all down to field at the end. We're cutting it pretty fine
40:10We're just keeping our fingers crossed now. Can an engineer do something to assist that fuel situation?
40:15Can you inherently design some things?
40:18Well, I mean obviously at the basic stage of the design of the car
40:21All we can do is get the drag out of it, but right now obviously it's down to the driver
40:25And it's also nail-biting time because he's got one in first and second
40:30So allenser jr. Now, can he hold on 89 laps are complete the 105 lap scheduled distance
40:37Danny sullivan continues to chase him and keep in mind paul what the team managers will call the drivers
40:43Tell them what they think the fuel is doing little al can tell them by radio what his meter says on the day
40:49And they'll figure it out and tell him to short shift for example
40:53Just to stay ahead of danny sullivan wouldn't be the contest if he knew he was going to run out because second better than parking
40:59on the track
41:02Only man to win five straight races at the same track
41:06Aj point at threatened new jersey, but as allenser jr. On his way to matching that beat
41:13So
41:18Allenser jr. With danny sullivan still there keeping track of the leader of the race bobby ray hall still sets in third
41:25The leader is running right together on this sack
41:43Oh
41:51Whoa, look at that
41:53After such a great ride tangled up in some of the flags and banners at the edge of the course
41:58He had a great ride going now follows down through the order. He was running in fifth place
42:04And when scott goodyear comes past this side on the track, then scott goodyear will move into fifth
42:10Well, this was something that pruitt's team really needed a success here
42:14He appears just to have lost it cleanly looks like the corner coming off a seaside was slick for everybody that came through it
42:21This is the onboard camera view bobby. Did you notice that the cars are getting in the air, too?
42:25Are you coming in? He just got loose. He didn't there was no reason nobody was close to him
42:30It's slippery down there. Probably somebody's losing a little bit of oil a little bit of water
42:34Isn't it fantastic that when you have an incident the next thing is we can see it as the driver sees it
42:39Isn't that fabulous unbelievable?
42:40He could not keep the engine going got tangled up
42:43And now the nd car safety team is going to give him a pull and hopefully we'll get him back into the running
42:50And there come the leaders past allen's or jr. Danny sullivan just behind him. Bobby ray hall sits in third place
42:56Fittipaldi runs in fourth
42:5895 laps are complete just to wrap that idea up. One of the whales is now going to be named little al i'm not sure
43:04They shouldn't name the biggest one of all
43:07After so the fight continues 96 laps are now complete. We're in the closing moments
43:13Will allen's or jr. Make it five in a row?
43:20And brian till he'd been missing
43:22Had an engine miss for a couple of laps and then suddenly the engine let go he was running in 12th place
43:28And with the attrition in this race despite this situation brian may in fact be able to hold on to 12th position
43:34That's the uh judd engine that scott pruitt rode with last year
43:39These aerial pictures that have been coming to you throughout the day help show you the coverage
43:43They've all been courtesy of this magnificent airship
43:46It is a newly painted and newly renamed airship eagle from nearby carson, california
43:51There are the shots down and of course, they're looking on the lead
43:54Allen's or jr being chased by his teammate danny sullivan and bobby ray hall
44:00Every lap itches just a little bit closer emerson fittipaldi
44:04Is in fourth and now scott goodyear is up in fifth place
44:09And perhaps this will be scott goodyear's best finish ever despite one spin
44:14And one stop and go penalty fifth would be the best he's ever done in the indy car
44:20Just in case anybody knows the father with the safety truck out on the track and they're going after brian till sometimes the fans
44:27Watching tv might just wonder what that extra was on the track going to slope course. Well, they were able to pull brian till back into
44:34A separated area between the wall and out of harm's way
44:37I assume now that they will leave that car there until the end of the race because it is only six laps away
44:4499 laps are now complete and allen's or jr flashes over the start finish line completing the 100th lap
44:52And in the kellis craco pits, they can't believe it. Shelly is worrying herself to death
44:58Wondering can danny sullivan and his crew close in and can bobby ray hall close in there's debbie ray hall
45:04Keeping track of her husband. None of the cars are in contest at this moment. They're lined up nice and single file
45:11Emerson fittipaldi though closing in
45:15On the seaside straight now, it's amazing at the race at this long and at the end of the race
45:20Look at that one, two, three, four cars all in the same lap
45:24And they're definitely going to be racing each other a whole bunch harder in the next few laps
45:28less than two seconds between first place and fourth place and of course any chance the drivers might have to try to
45:36Economize on their fuel is out the window. They've got a race and race hard
45:40Who's going to win it now with just four laps to go about any boy anybody's choice you consider it
45:46You've got the gallmer chassis running one and two last year chevrolet engine
45:50Alola last year's model running with last year's chevrolet engine running in third place brand new penske brand new chevy engine
45:57Running in fourth place. They all perform just a little bit different in some places
46:03One will be stronger and others another will be and now
46:06Allenser jr. And the rest have to deal with traffic and yet only four laps left and look at these cars
46:12They're virtually running just about the same speed paul. Look at that danny sullivan taking advantage of the traffic comes inside little
46:19Al touches it little al spins it
46:22The two teammates get together little al now tries to get the engine back under power
46:26He tries to roll forward the radio report no doubt will be coming to this man
46:31As little al tries to come around but there's very little time left danny sullivan is out in front ray hall is second
46:38Then apalde is third and it's pretty clear that it was danny sullivan who touched little al's rear a wheel there
46:44So this is going to lead to recriminations within the team and a possibility for ray hall at the last minute
46:49Remember the car little al was so long getting going because the turning radius and all these indy cars just isn't very sharp
46:56Not sharp enough for him to gotten out of that little blockage that he was in there
47:00How devastating to come this close to his fifth victory here and have it taken away?
47:05So savagely right at the last minute ray hall on the attack
47:08Sullivan very much back in the indy car racing after a year and here comes ray hall coming to the inside little al by the way
47:15Dropped into fourth place when he finally got it back under power
47:19But now ray hall sees his opportunity for two in a row and he begins to charge at the back of danny sullivan's car
47:26There's no laps left. He's gotta go for it
47:28Time is running out and ray hall is passing has got to be at the end of the long straightaways
47:33One of the two of them the front one to the back one the engines in first and second place are the same
47:38The difference is in the chassis and certainly in the driver's skills, though. They are both wonderfully well-matched competitors
47:45Both of them indianapolis 500 champions both of them ppg indycar champions
47:49Where sullivan to hang on an all new chassis to galmer chassis would win in just its third race an incredible achievement
47:57103 laps into the record book
48:00Al hunter jr's chance at a fifth straight victory go by the wayside when he taps with danny sullivan
48:08But the question one must ask is did in that tap any damage occur to sullivan's car which may manifest it here in the last lap
48:16I doubt it
48:16But I think the sullivan the pressure on sullivan is now incredible because if he loses this race to ray hall
48:22He is going to be a very bad guy around the gallus craco team. Well, he didn't do it intentionally
48:29Racing is very close the white flag comes out. There is just one more circuit to go 1.59
48:35Miles danny sullivan has the lead here. This is one of ray hall's chances
48:40He doesn't take it as they go into the first herd now
48:42They will have to single file maury cranes watches his car
48:46Debbie ray hall keeps track of her husband. Now. They move back heading for seaside
48:51That is the last reasonable chance that bobby ray hall will have
48:55His objective will be to try to move to the inside at the end of this straight at out break
49:00Danny sullivan going into the corner. Here is ray hall. He makes his move darting toward the inside
49:05No, he can't get it done there very little opportunity
49:08Now it would be a remarkable maneuver if ray hall could get past as danny sullivan heads for the final turn
49:14And danny sullivan is now on the pit straight both of them coming up to speed the checkered flag line just ahead
49:21And danny sullivan facing the checkered flag has taken the win for the gallus craco team danny sullivan with his 16th career win
49:29His first win since the finale in 1990 at laguna seca
49:35A very tired man a dirty helmet and a dirty car
49:38But it doesn't matter the way they appear in victory lane
49:41Racing gets hard right at the last the cars are if you feel really light too light for good braking
49:46Tires are all worn down pretty good. Those guys were trying so hard folk
49:51So danny sullivan takes the win
49:54This was the decisive moment as sullivan came down the inside now watch carefully. He's alongside little al
50:01Little al turned right across the front little al still on the racetrack at that point
50:06Tapped the left front wing on danny sullivan's car and little al's car got loose
50:12He spun it fell back to fourth place little al's view the same situation again heading for that sharp right hander at the end of seaside
50:21Now he's on the brakes danny sullivan is coming to the inside little al turns into the corner
50:27and they touch
50:29And the race is effectively over at that point and al answer jr's dream of five consecutive wins at this track
50:37Ends as he slides to a stop just inches from the barrier
50:41Across the line in second bobby ray hall who made a valiant try in the last laps emerson fittipaldi in third
50:48Little al in fourth place scott goodyear came by in fifth and rick nears stayed with it all day and came by in sixth
50:57So al answer jr takes the win in the toyota art that takes fourth in the toyota grand prix as danny sullivan wins it
51:10Oh, we're running overtime here in the toyota grand prix of long beach
51:13We're not going to have a chance to really talk to danny sullivan who wins here
51:17And we set the stage now for the indianapolis 500 mile race as we look at the unofficial final results with a great finish
51:25For both jim basser and eric bachelar. I'm paul page so long from long beach
51:41The indycar series is presented in association with champion spark club
