In the morning wind begins to ease for most, however heavy rain continues in the southeast of England. Elsewhere remains relatively dry, with brighter skies for most. Showery conditions in central and western Scotland, as well as parts of Northern Ireland and Wales but these are expected to clear by the afternoon. This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the morning of 19/10/24. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Aidan McGivern.

00:00Hello, good morning. One low clears away, another deeper low arrives and as a result
00:07the Met Office have issued an amber warning for Scotland, for Western Scotland in particular,
00:12for Sunday as Storm Ashley moves in. Ashley during Saturday deepens rapidly as it moves
00:20across the Atlantic as the jet stream picks it up and becomes a very vigorous low by the
00:26time it reaches the UK during Sunday with widespread gales and disruptive winds especially
00:32towards the North West. Having said that, there's another low that's affecting us at
00:37first this weekend and that brought wet and windy weather to the West on Friday but this
00:42morning it's bringing outbreaks of rain to the Midlands and Eastern England. That rain
00:47is slowing down, the winds are easing and there'll be some heavy rain in places. So
00:52certainly a slow start for Eastern England with that rain continuing into the afternoon
00:56in places. But brighter skies follow elsewhere, albeit with a few showers for Central and
01:00Western Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland, Wales and the South West. These showers largely
01:05fade away into the late afternoon and in any sunny spells feeling pleasant enough although
01:10temperatures limited in the far South East because of the rain and its late clearance.
01:15Then into the evening, any showers tend to fade away, a clear and calm start to the night
01:22you wouldn't think a storm was on the way but by midnight the cloud is thickening and
01:27the wind is picking up across Western parts of the UK. Northern Ireland sees heavy rain
01:31move in by dawn, likewise for parts of Wales and the South West, the winds strengthening.
01:37In the East it's clear at first on Sunday but the wind comes in two swathes. The first
01:43swathe associated with heavy rain in Western parts of the UK on Sunday morning, 50, 60
01:48mph wind gusts. Then the next swathe of strong winds, even stronger winds I should say, associated
01:56with Ashley and to the South of the Low Centre, those winds are primarily across Northern
02:01Ireland and Western Scotland by Sunday evening. Wind gusts of 70 and for parts of Western
02:07Scotland 80 mph could cause considerable disruption. We're talking about transport disruption,
02:13power cuts as well as the risk of coastal flooding, particularly coastal flooding because
02:19the winds of course coinciding with a period of high tides. Now for much of the UK it is
02:25a wet and windy start to Sunday, the rain soon pushing eastwards but it takes its time
02:31to clear from the Midlands and East Anglia as well as the South East during the afternoon.
02:35Brighter skies arrive in the West, don't be fooled by those brighter skies, the strongest
02:38winds arrive behind the wet weather and the strongest winds will be associated with lively
02:44showers into the afternoon and evening. So Western Scotland, amber warning. Much of the
02:50rest of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern and North Western England as well as parts
02:56of Wales, yellow warning. Risk of disruption, we'll keep you updated right here at the Met
03:01office and we'll have those updates on our YouTube channel as well as through the website
03:04and app. Bye bye.
