Weekend weather – Could snow return by Monday?

After a very warm spell for some earlier in the week it’s turned cooler for Easter. For most of the long weekend the weather will be fine and dry but much colder weather will arrive by Monday and bring with it snow showers.

00:00Hello, welcome to your Easter weekend forecast from the Met Office. For much of this long
00:06weekend, the weather will be set fair, dry and bright. Now, it's not going to be as warm
00:10as it has been, but we have seen some exceptional warmth. Temperatures will just be closer to
00:15average. So when the sun is shining, it'll feel quite pleasant. But gardeners take note,
00:19the mornings could be a little bit frosty. However, we are going to see a change during
00:24the weekend. Across the north, that will happen on Sunday. But by Monday, all parts of the
00:29UK will be significantly colder as Arctic air arrives, bringing hail and snow showers
00:36and a significant wind chill. For the time being, though, it's high pressure that's dominating.
00:42It's sitting to the northeast and around the high pressure, the winds certainly down the
00:45eastern side of England coming in from the North Sea, bringing a much cooler feel here
00:50compared to recent days. Those winds will also bring in a bit more moisture. So across
00:55eastern parts of England especially, but also northern Scotland, it will be predominantly
00:59cloudy through Good Friday. But for many central and western parts, it will be a fine day of
01:05spring sunshine. A chilly start, yes, with a touch of frost by the afternoon in the sunshine.
01:11If you can get out of the breeze, it'll feel pretty pleasant with temperatures climbing
01:15into the low teens. Yes, nowhere near as high as it was earlier in the week, but still pleasant
01:20enough. However, it will feel pretty cold, I suspect, on some of these North Sea coasts
01:24with that brisk breeze and without as much sunshine here. As we go into Saturday, not
01:31a great deal of change. Again, we'll continue to see quite a bit of cloud across central
01:35and eastern parts, it looks like, but it should break up at times. It'll be across Scotland,
01:39Northern Ireland, Wales and western parts of England where we have another day with
01:44quite a lot of sunshine. And again, that's where we'll see the top temperatures. And
01:48again, though, it will be cold first thing. So it'll take a while for things to warm up.
01:53It'll certainly feel fresher again than it did earlier in the week with temperatures
01:56mostly 10, 11, maybe 12 or 13 in a few places. And again, it will feel colder if you've got
02:01the breeze coming in from the sea and if it stays quite cloudy across parts of eastern
02:06England. But for most dry and fine through Friday and Saturday and even into Sunday,
02:12high pressure will hold on across the south. However, look further north. This weather
02:17front will start to change things. The ice above squeezing together. So the breeze will
02:21pick up at first and then this weather front will bring a band of rain on Sunday across
02:27parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland might be dry early on through central and southern
02:32Scotland. But the rain will be sinking its way southwards to arrive probably by around
02:37lunchtime. Now, notice again, for most of England and Wales, it's by and large a fine
02:41day, if anything, probably brighter across parts of the east. And for many, it will be
02:46a touch warmer by the end of the day. Some of that rain will be pushing its way down
02:49towards parts of northern England. But we'll see a change in temperatures as that wet weather
02:55arrives across Scotland. Much colder air will follow on behind it. But ahead of it again
03:00on Sunday for large parts of England, Wales, dry and bright and probably temperatures a
03:05little bit higher again on Sunday, back up into the teens in some places. However, that
03:11weather front isn't sticking around across northern Scotland. It is going to shift its
03:14way southwards through Sunday and then into Monday and follow the ice bars. They point
03:18all the way up to the Arctic. It will be much colder air flooding its way southwards
03:23through especially Sunday night so that by Monday, we're all in that colder air. The
03:28weather front's scooting away and that colder air in place. Strong cold winds. Look at the
03:34ice bars really close together, bringing a significant wind chill. Temperatures six,
03:39seven degrees. Average values for January. Add on the strength of the wind and it will
03:44feel much closer to freezing, feeling sub zero for many. Add on to that, there will
03:49be lots of wintry showers around as well. Snow and hail showers almost anywhere and
03:54down to low levels as well. That probably won't stick around for very long, but it could
03:58stick around on some hills, particularly as we go into Monday night and into Tuesday.
04:03So this is a big change through Monday. A cold wind with snow and hail showers for many.
04:10Make sure you stay up to date with the forecast throughout the Easter weekend. Best way to
04:13do that, of course, is to follow us across social media.
