Week Ahead – Not much rain and further frosts

Another largely dry week ahead for the UK and most places will see fairly sunny skies too. A warmer feel to start the week, but temperatures will drop off and the threat of night frosts persists all week.

00:00Thanks for joining me for this Met Office look at the weather for the week ahead.
00:04April so far has been dry and cold, and both of those themes will continue for much of
00:10the week ahead.
00:11It's a bit warmer by day with sunny spells, but a continued likelihood of overnight frosts
00:17and very little in the way of rainfall.
00:19Now, it won't be completely dry, certainly this weather front will bring some rain across
00:23Scotland and Northern Ireland on Tuesday, but high pressure will continue to dominate
00:28throughout this week, and that will bring much of the UK a largely dry week.
00:34But as I said, this weather front will bring a different day to Scotland and Northern Ireland
00:37after some wet weather in the far north-west on Monday.
00:40It will brighten up here during Tuesday, but for a good part of Scotland, Northern Ireland
00:44dull and damp, and some of that patchy rain will trickle into the far north of England.
00:49The odd shower elsewhere over England and Wales, but generally here dry, fine and sunny,
00:53although it could be quite misty and murky on some of those North Sea coasts.
00:58Temperatures will respond to the sunshine.
01:00The sun is pretty strong at this time of year, moderate or even high UV levels this week,
01:05so take note of that.
01:06And that sun will lift the temperatures up to 18, 19, maybe 20 Celsius, but cooler with
01:11the cloudier conditions across Scotland and Northern Ireland, and even with some sunny
01:15spells in the afternoon across the far north, a much fresher feel here with the colder air
01:19in place behind this cold front.
01:22So much so that the showers across Shetland could be quite wintry for a time on Wednesday
01:26morning early on.
01:28Through the day, though, that cold front continues to track southwards, so more cloud on Wednesday
01:32for the Midlands, Wales and eastern England, a little bit of showery rain here and there,
01:36one or two showers possible in the far southwest also.
01:39Brighter skies will follow that weather front, so much of Northern Britain seeing sunny spells,
01:42but lower temperatures and feeling really quite fresh on some of those North Sea coast
01:47once more with the wind off the sea, 8, 9, 10 Celsius, maybe into the mid-teens across
01:52the south.
01:54There's the high pressure continuing to move in across the country during Wednesday and
01:59into Thursday, by which time it's pretty much sitting right across the country.
02:03So clear skies at night means a frosty start for many on Thursday.
02:08Some patchy cloud here and there and a bit more of a breeze picking up across the far
02:12south and especially in the southwest.
02:14It could really be quite windy, not just through Thursday, but Friday and Saturday as well.
02:19A bit of a breeze in the Northern Isles, small chance of a shower, but most places dry and
02:24fine and yes, a colder feel.
02:27Temperatures in the afternoon, sunshine with light winds, not too bad, 13, 14, 15 degrees.
02:32It will be colder on many coasts, however.
02:34High pressure holding on into the weekend.
02:36This low is threatening to get closer and as it pushes in, the isobars squeeze together.
02:41So again, those winds will be quite a feature of the weather over the southwest, getting
02:46quite gusty at times here.
02:48Altiweather winds will be light and again, a chilly start with a touch of frost, but
02:52mostly dry and bright.
02:53Some cloud will develop through the day, but overall, it's fine with temperatures just
02:58starting to creep up once more.
02:59So 15, 16, possibly again, many coasts will be cooler than that and feeling chilly with
03:04that wind across the southwest, which could continue as we head into the weekend.
03:08Just the threat of this area of low pressure getting a little bit closer.
03:12But the main feature will continue to be high pressure.
03:15So even into the weekend, it looks like staying largely dry with a continued risk of
03:21nighttime frosts, but could be quite windy at times across the south, particularly the
03:26southwest. As always, keep up to date with the latest from the Met Office by following
03:30us on social media.
03:32And as I mentioned earlier, UV levels are moderate or high across the UK.
03:35Pollen levels, tree pollen levels are also high as well.
03:39More information on that, as always, if you follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
03:44Bye for now.
