00:00The Senate is looking at the repeated trafficking of Filipinos in Cambodia to become surrogate mothers.
00:06According to the law, those who are involved should be held accountable.
00:10This is what Daniel Manalastas reported.
00:15The Senate has already signed a resolution to investigate what happened to the Filipinos
00:20who were involved in the creation of surrogate mothers in Cambodia.
00:24Sen. Risa Hondeveros of the Philippine Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality
00:31reported that there were 20 Filipinos who were involved and 13 of them were surrogates.
00:37The Senate Committee on Migrant Workers Chairperson Sen. Raffy Tulfo said
00:41that when they learned of the incident, they were instructed by the DFA
00:46to monitor the situation and provide assistance to the distressed Filipinos.
00:51They asked the victims to talk to them so that they would know what assistance they needed.
00:56The Senator said that all parties should be held accountable for this illegal act.
01:01The Department of Justice and the Interagency Council Against Trafficking
01:06also want to investigate again.
01:08The DOJ is encouraging the government's efforts to protect our countrymen from exploitation and abuse.
01:16The DOJ also called on our countrymen to be alert and be careful of the illegal activities abroad.
01:23The DOJ also asked for assistance from their foreign counterparts and international organizations
01:28in the ongoing campaign against any form of exploitation.
01:33The Department of Foreign Affairs and other government agencies
01:37were the first to promise to talk to them.
01:39But the DFA has a reminder.
01:41All throughout Southeast Asia, there is a lot of traffic.
01:44Scammers, surrogates, and others.
01:48Please, before you go to our countrymen to work,
01:55you will go through the DMW-POA, the official process.
01:59Of course, there is a fine, there is a hassle, but it is important to have protection.
02:03But in a sad situation, we believe most knew.
02:08They knew what they were getting into.
02:10But some, most,
02:12it is impossible for one or two to think that others will do it.
02:17Because usually, what they are told is that there is work in Thailand,
02:22in Cambodia, computer work, tourism work.
02:27That's when they think that others are doing it.
02:29We just heard about surrogates.
02:31Actually, yes.
02:33It's possible, it's happening in other countries.
02:35Daniel Mananastas for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
