00:00Once upon a time, in the busy city of London, there was a little girl named Rosamund.
00:16She loved all things pretty and never cared to think about her rash decisions.
00:22One day, while she was out shopping with her mother,
00:25she marveled at all the lovely things being sold in the windows.
00:29Oh, mother, I wish I could buy very pretty things. Wouldn't that be nice?
00:36Hmm, yes, it would be very...
00:39What?
00:40Oh, no, what would you do with all of it?
00:43Oh, I'd think of that later.
00:47Rosamund's mother shook her head, and as they continued, they came to a milliner's shop.
00:54Where Rosamund stared at all the long ribbons that hung,
00:58the bright and colorful hats, and the beautiful flowers displayed at the window.
01:03Oh, mother, isn't it all so pretty?
01:08You should buy them.
01:11Them? What would I do with all of them?
01:15Oh, I'm sure we would find a use for it.
01:20Rosamund? I'd rather know the use before buying it.
01:25Well, let's move on.
01:28Rosamund sulked as they went by the milliner's shop.
01:32Walking, they soon reached the jeweler's.
01:36There, she looked with awe at all the sparkly necklaces and trinkets that were laid out.
01:42Mother, look, aren't they just, just lovely?
01:48Yes, they are.
01:51I love all of them. Can we buy it? Can we?
01:55But, Rosamund, we already have enough jewelry, and I don't feel we should buy more.
02:04But, mother, the colors are so beautiful, and it sparkles.
02:12Isn't that enough reason to buy it?
02:15Do you really feel that way?
02:18Well, then, I must disagree with you, darling.
02:22Now, we must get our groceries.
02:26And so, Rosamund was dragged away from the shop, and grumpily followed her mother into a chemist's store.
02:35There, she saw many bottles of different shapes, sizes, and glistening colors.
02:42But her eyes fell on a single purple jar.
02:46Mother, mother, doesn't that jar look super pretty?
02:50Hmm? Can I have it?
02:53What would you do with it?
02:56I'll use it to put flowers in. That'll look nice.
03:01But you already have enough flower pots. Come on, let's go.
03:06But even as they walked out, Rosamund's mind was still on the purple jar.
03:12Mother, I don't think you have any money.
03:16Oh, I have money, sweetheart.
03:21Well, then, I don't understand you.
03:24If I had money, I'd buy all the ribbons and jars and trinkets I would find.
03:30Is that so? Well, I don't think you should buy just anything.
03:36Otherwise, we wouldn't have any money, and only pretty things in our life.
03:41Wow! That would be amazing!
03:46You know, I think that if you checked that jar more carefully, you wouldn't like it very much.
03:54No, I definitely like it. Pretty things don't need to be checked, you see.
04:00Just as they were walking, Rosamund felt something hurting her foot.
04:05Ow, ow! Mother, wait! There's something in my shoe.
04:10She removed it, only to find a huge hole.
04:14Oh, no! And these were my best shoes! How could this have happened?
04:22Why did you wear them?
04:25Because they look so pretty! But now they're ruined, and I'll need more shoes.
04:33So, the two of them went to find the cobbler's shop.
04:37Poor Rosamund had to walk very carefully, lest she hurt her foot on anything sharp.
04:45Soon, they entered the cobbler's shop.
04:48Hello there! Two beautiful pairs of shoes for two lovely ladies?
04:54Oh, just a pair for my young one.
04:57That will be easy. See that pair over there? They'll fit her perfectly.
05:05Excuse me!
05:07Ah, excuse me for a minute.
05:10Well, don't you think this shop is pretty as well?
05:14I don't! The shoes are all bland and dull, and it smells terrible in here!
05:23Well, that's the smell of new leather. You'll have to see whether that pair will fit you.
05:30It looks just about my size.
05:33You can't be sure until you try them, the same way you won't know if you like the jar until examining it properly.
05:42I won't have to check that! I know I'll like it! Can you buy me both the shoes and the jar, Mother?
05:49Well, I don't have the money to buy both of them. You'll have to choose any one.
05:55Why don't you decide for yourself? In that way, you will be responsible for your own actions.
06:02So Mother left Rosamund to ponder about the jar and shoes while she went to talk to the cobbler.
06:10Rosamund looked disdainfully at the shoes.
06:13But as she thought about the sparkly purple jar, she immediately brightened up.
06:19When her mother returned, she spoke without any hesitation.
06:25Mother, I've decided on the purple jar.
06:30The shoes aren't so bad. I'm sure they can last a month.
06:35Oh, very well then. But you must promise me that until a month passes, you won't ask for any shoes.
06:44Rosamund nodded and happily skipped out of the cobbler's shop, which was very foolish as her foot soon started to hurt.
06:53Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow!
06:56And so, at the chemist's, Rosamund smiled gleefully as she was handed the bright purple jar.
07:03As they walked back home, she hugged the bottle tightly.
07:07But walking wasn't easy as every now and then, a stone would find its way into the shoe.
07:15Oh, Mother, my foot hurts!
07:18It was your choice, remember? Do you want to give the bottle back?
07:23What? No! I can walk fine. It doesn't hurt that bad.
07:30And so she continued to limp until they reached home.
07:35She took off her shoe, only to find it completely ruined.
07:40Well, I can just use my normal shoes now for this beauty.
07:46Rosamund picked some pretty flowers they had bought and went to put them into the jar.
07:52But as she opened it, a horrible stench came out.
07:56Eww! What is this?
08:00What's wrong, darling?
08:02Mother, this jar contains some stinky liquid. I need to put the flowers in it.
08:09Well then, why don't you fill it with water? You'll have to throw that other liquid out.
08:14She went to the sink and poured all the dark liquid out of the jar.
08:22Oh no! It's just a normal glass jar!
08:29Indeed it was. The purple liquid inside had been what had made the jar so attractive.
08:36And now little Rosamund was completely heartbroken.
08:40Oh mother! What do I do? I don't want this jar anymore.
08:46Why not? You can still put the flowers in it.
08:50No! I wanted the jar only because it was purple.
08:55Well, I told you to check it more carefully.
08:59If you had, then maybe you would have bought the shoes instead.
09:04Shoes! Mother, if I give you back the jar, then can you buy the shoes for me?
09:11I'm sorry, my dear, but as I said, no shoes until the month ends.
09:17You'll have to do without them.
09:20Rosamund wasn't happy, but she stuck to her promise and didn't grumble.
09:26That is, until the next day.
09:30My dear, we have been invited to a dance this evening at the next town.
09:35My, we will have such a great time, won't we children?
09:39Wow! A dance!
09:41Yay!
09:48And so, when evening came and everyone got ready to dance,
09:54And so, when evening came and everyone got ready,
09:58Rosamund went to find her shoes.
10:01Oh dear, the only good shoes I have are ruined.
10:05Maybe father won't see them and he'll let me come.
10:10But as they were all leaving, her father caught sight of them.
10:15Rosamund, what are you wearing?
10:18Those shoes are disgraceful.
10:20Those shoes are disgraceful. Change them at once.
10:24But father, I don't have any other shoes.
10:29Well, then you cannot come to the dance wearing those.
10:32You'll have to stay at home tonight.
10:36Poor Rosamund begged her father to take her.
10:39But he was a stern man, and in the end, they left without her.
10:44Oh, what have I done?
10:47If only I'd been smarter and more careful with my choices.
10:51The next day, Rosamund was thoroughly sad and gloomy.
10:56What's wrong, Rosamund?
10:59Oh mother, today is Alice's birthday and I can't even attend the party.
11:05I made such a silly decision, but in the end it was my own fault.
11:12I'm glad that you've realized your own fault.
11:15And it is a very brave thing to do too.
11:18So, as a reward, here.
11:22Mother gave Rosamund to open the box she was carrying.
11:26And in it, she saw a lovely little pair of shoes just for her.
11:33Oh mother, these are simply beautiful.
11:37But what about my promise to you?
11:41Well dear, you made that promise.
11:44I never promise you anything.
11:47And so little Rosamund had learned a very important lesson.
11:52One must never want something just because it is pretty.
11:56As you may either be very happy with it or extremely disappointed.
12:02So always choose well.
