00:00The Prince and the Pauper
00:09Long, long ago when King Henry VIII ruled over London, a strange incident took place.
00:17Two boys were born on the same day at the same time.
00:22One was born in the palace and thus became a prince,
00:26while the other was born to a very poor family and thus became a pauper.
00:33The pauper's family was only a few miles away from the palace.
00:38This was the sad state of affairs in those times.
00:42Where Prince Edward was given the best food and clothing,
00:46the pauper who was named Tom had to beg for a single bite and wore nothing but rags.
00:54As they both grew up, another coincidence was waiting to be revealed.
00:59The uncanny similarity between the two boys.
01:03Ugh! Tom, you useless boy! You brought me nothing today!
01:10Father, I don't want to beg.
01:13You think anybody wants to beg, you fool?
01:16If you don't beg, then what are we going to eat?
01:20And with that attitude, you should have been born in a palace!
01:24Why were you born in a pauper's house?
01:28But how can I decide where to be born?
01:31Oh, shut up, you ungrateful boy! Get out and bring me some money!
01:37The only good thing in Tom's life was Professor Andrews who taught in a school nearby.
01:44He used to bring different books with him every week and encourage Tom to read.
01:50Books are a man's best friend, Tom.
01:53They will guide you through any situation.
01:56I know life is difficult for you.
01:59No, you don't know. Nobody knows.
02:03Tell me, Professor, why wasn't I born in a palace?
02:06I don't want to be a pauper all my life.
02:09It isn't fair.
02:11Who said you have to be a pauper just because you were born in a pauper's house?
02:18But isn't that how it works?
02:20A pauper's child is a pauper, and a king's child is a prince or a princess.
02:26But as we grow, we can choose to be someone else.
02:31In fact, we can choose to be anybody we want to be.
02:35Answer me this. If I only give you two options to be a pauper or a greedy, dishonest man, who would you rather be?
02:45If the only other option is to be a dishonest man, then I would rather stay a pauper and be honest.
02:52Exactly. You see now, you can always choose.
02:57Doesn't matter if you were born in a palace or a small hut.
03:01Being honest and noble takes courage, Tom, and I know you have that courage. I believe in you.
03:11One fine day, Tom wandered off looking for food.
03:16After walking a few miles, he reached the palace.
03:20He was amazed to see tall and huge structures before him.
03:25He went around and sneaked through the bushes to get a closer look.
03:30He saw Prince Edward playing with his toys.
03:34I must be the prince. I wish I could have a royal life.
03:41Hey, you dirty boy! How dare you enter these premises?
03:46Let's throw him out of the palace.
03:48Just as the soldiers picked Tom up to throw him out, Prince Edward came out running.
03:54What is all the commotion about?
03:57This boy was trying to enter the palace.
04:00What is your name?
04:02My name is Tom Canty. My apologies, your highness. I didn't mean any harm.
04:07I was only peeping through your window.
04:10Though he wore very dirty clothes, Tom spoke with respect.
04:15The prince was curious about the boy.
04:18He took Tom to his chamber and offered him food and sweets.
04:23Tom couldn't believe that he was standing in a real palace.
04:28You were very lucky. I wish I were a prince too.
04:32Don't you find something strange here, Tom?
04:35There are a lot of similarities in our physical appearance.
04:39The same round nose, curly hair, big eyes.
04:45I did notice it. But there is one very important thing.
04:49The places we come from.
04:51What matters in this kingdom is that you wear these expensive robes and I wear rags.
04:57Didn't you see how your guards treated me?
04:59They didn't care that you and I look similar. Nobody does.
05:03I don't believe that.
05:05Wait. Why don't we exchange our clothes and test everyone?
05:10It will be fun.
05:12Um, I am not sure.
05:14Come on, Tom. We are friends now.
05:18And so they did.
05:20Tom and Edward were shocked to see themselves in the mirror.
05:24Wow, we look alike.
05:26Ah, but it's all a dream.
05:29We must exchange our clothes now.
05:31What's the hurry?
05:33Let me test my guards.
05:35I shall walk out of this room dressed like a pauper and you stay here and pretend to be Prince Edward.
05:43But what if…
05:45Don't worry, Tom. Everything will be fine.
05:49I will leave now.
05:51On his way out, the prince picked something up from his locker and hid it in his dirty clothes.
05:58He then walked to the main gate of the palace.
06:01The guards didn't even notice him.
06:04Tom was right.
06:06All they care about is what I wear.
06:09They don't recognize me.
06:12Edward went out of the gate and turned around to go in.
06:16But the guards stopped him.
06:18Wait! Enough!
06:20We will not let you around our prince anymore.
06:23Get out!
06:24Calm down.
06:26I am Prince Edward.
06:28And I am the king.
06:31What?
06:32No, you're not.
06:34No matter how much he pleaded, the guards were not convinced.
06:38They threw the prince out.
06:41Boy, this is not going to be easy.
06:46Where do I go now?
06:48The prince walked away from the palace and unfortunately was found by Tom's father.
06:55You useless boy.
06:57Where have you been?
06:59I am very hungry.
07:00Go, get me some food.
07:02Nobody had ever talked to Edward like that.
07:06Afraid and confused, he left to look for some food.
07:11As he walked down the street, Prince Edward was shocked to see what lay in front of him.
07:18People in my kingdom are so poor.
07:21This is unbelievable.
07:24We waste food every day in the palace.
07:27And here, they don't have enough to feed even a family of two.
07:32Meanwhile, Tom tried his best to convince everyone around that he was not Prince Edward.
07:38But nobody was ready to listen.
07:41Everybody around him looked confused.
07:44Is he all right?
07:46Something seems wrong with him.
07:49I don't know.
07:50I asked him about the Great Seal of England and he replied saying that he doesn't know about it.
07:57He is the prince.
07:58It's his duty to keep the seal safe.
08:01How can he not know?
08:03Forgive me, but is it possible that he's forgotten?
08:08The same way he seems to have forgotten that he's Prince Edward and not some Tom the pauper.
08:14Oh, Lord, that would be terrible.
08:17King's health worsens with each passing day and his son loses his memory.
08:22Lord saves this kingdom.
08:25Tom wanted Edward to get back to the palace soon.
08:29But at the same time, he realized that he had to take care of his kingdom till the real prince returns.
08:36After all, Prince Edward was his friend and he would not let him down.
08:41Tom was wise and intelligent.
08:44He strongly took over his duties and learned quickly.
08:48Everybody in the palace slowly began to trust him and grew fond of their prince.
08:54He was a well-read boy.
08:56The knowledge he gathered while reading the books given by Professor Andrew was used well.
09:01His wisdom was appreciated.
09:03He was humble and generous to all.
09:07Everything was going fine until one day a sad thing happened.
09:12King Henry VIII passed away.
09:16The palace mourned for their king.
09:20I am sorry for your loss.
09:24But it is now time to crown you as our king.
09:29What? But what's the hurry?
09:33People of this kingdom need you, Prince.
09:36And you have learned enough.
09:38This has to be done.
09:40I will arrange for the coronation ceremony.
09:43Tom liked it in the palace.
09:45But he very well knew that it was not his life to live.
09:49He didn't want to be crowned the king.
09:52He sent his men out in the streets to look for Prince Edward.
09:57But since the guards didn't know which poor boy to look for,
10:01they always returned with no news.
10:04Tom was getting worried for the prince.
10:07While every night Tom wished with all his heart for the prince to return,
10:11Edward found himself in yet another trouble.
10:15Once walking down the streets,
10:17Edward was captured by two crooks who forced him to steal.
10:21Although Edward didn't really steal and put in the prison.
10:27That day he was to be taken to the court.
10:31Edward was ready for worse.
10:33But unexpectedly...
10:36Your Honor, there has been a mistake.
10:39One of my guards picked this boy up thinking him to be a thief.
10:43But he didn't steal anything.
10:46I request you to let him go, Your Honor.
10:51Edward was set free.
10:53He thanked the merciful man and made a small request.
10:58I have a very important message to be taken to the palace.
11:02Prince Edward is being crowned king tomorrow.
11:06Please take me to the palace immediately.
11:09The man didn't believe Edward.
11:11But since he too wished to attend the coronation ceremony,
11:15he agreed to take Edward along.
11:18The next day, inside the palace,
11:21everybody had assembled to cheer for their new king.
11:25It is a historic day for all of us.
11:30Today we crown our new king, King Edward.
11:35Yay! King Edward! Way to go, Butler!
11:38King Edward!
11:40Everybody was very excited,
11:42just as the crown was about to be placed upon Tom's head.
11:47No! Wait!
11:50I am the real Prince Edward!
11:52What? How dare you!
11:54Look at your clothes!
11:56Guards, arrest him!
11:58No! Let me go!
12:01Guards, stand down.
12:03He is telling the truth, Lord St. John.
12:06He is Prince Edward, and I am Tom Canty.
12:09I tried to tell you all, but you didn't believe me.
12:12How is that possible?
12:14If you still don't believe us, then here!
12:17Isn't anybody worried about the great seal of England?
12:21I took it with me when I left the palace.
12:24Prince Edward and Tom narrated the whole incident.
12:28Everybody was shocked to hear that their real prince
12:31was wandering out on the streets.
12:34My apologies, Prince. I tried to look for you.
12:37Please take your rightful place as the king.
12:40Tom, you are my true friend.
12:44You diligently took care of my duties while I was away.
12:48I am very impressed with your honesty.
12:51You could have easily lied to prove me wrong and taken away my throne.
12:55Your Highness, I might be a pauper's son,
12:58but I don't choose to be a dishonest man.
13:00I am so honored to have known you, Tom.
13:04Would you accept to be my personal advisor?
13:07This kingdom needs your wisdom and knowledge.
13:10I would be grateful, Your Highness.
13:13As soon as the real prince was crowned to be the king of England,
13:17he immediately made some major changes in the rules and regulations of his kingdom.
13:23Watching the poverty around had moved him deeply.
13:27He stayed a merciful king throughout his reign.
13:30The kingdom was inspired by Tom Canty and his honesty.
13:35King Edward and Tom Canty stayed close friends for the rest of their lives.
13:41The End
13:46Happy Prince
13:50One day in heaven, God found two of his servants just sitting there doing nothing.
13:55They looked unhappy.
13:58Hey, it's heaven.
14:01You can't just be unhappy here.
14:04What is the reason for your unhappiness?
14:08We have nothing to do.
14:10We're idle, and that's why we're unhappy.
14:15Okay, go fly down to earth.
14:18Find two best things from a city and get them to me.
14:23And thus, the servants of God flew away from heaven to earth.
14:28The statue was located in the heart of the city.
14:31He was covered with gold.
14:34His eyes were made of blue sapphires.
14:37There was a precious ruby on his waist belt.
14:41He set an example for everybody on how to be happy.
14:45Hence, they called him the Happy Prince.
14:50Oh, my baby, why are you crying?
14:54You have to be happy, just like the Happy Prince.
14:59Soon, winter came.
15:01The sun was setting, and a swallow bird was looking for a shelter for the night.
15:06He flew near the statue and thought,
15:09I can stay at the feet of the statue for a night.
15:12I won't feel cold here.
15:15And the bird stayed there under the statue between its two legs.
15:19Soon after, a drop of water fell on the bird.
15:23The bird looked at the sky, but the sky was clear.
15:28Where did this drop of water come from?
15:30It's not raining!
15:33And the second drop fell on the bird.
15:35The bird was surprised.
15:37He decided to find another shelter for himself.
15:41So, it came out, looked at the statue, and what a surprise!
15:45The statue was crying.
15:48Hey, why are you crying?
15:50You are the Happy Prince!
15:53No, not anymore.
15:56Why? What happened?
15:59When I was alive, I was very happy.
16:02I stayed in the palace and never came out.
16:05I used to play in my garden in the daytime and dance in the evenings.
16:10I was like every other human being.
16:13I also had a heart like you all have.
16:16I spent my life happily in my home
16:19and never knew the life outside the walls of the palace.
16:22I was very pleased with my small world
16:25and that's why they called me the Happy Prince.
16:29But now, as I am dead,
16:31and they have put me here, high above the city,
16:33I can see the other side of the coin.
16:36I can see people and their sufferings.
16:39Even though my heart is made of metal now,
16:42I can still feel their sorrows, and so I cry.
16:47Oh! Why are you crying now?
16:50I can see a lady living little away from up the city.
16:54She is too poor to feed her baby.
16:57She is stitching a dress for one of the queen's ladies
17:00for a dance in the palace.
17:02Her little boy is crying as he is hungry and ill,
17:05but the lady has nothing to feed him.
17:08She can only offer him water from the river.
17:11Oh! What a pity!
17:14Could you please take my red jewel to the lady?
17:17She is in need.
17:19But I have to go to Egypt.
17:22All my friends have migrated there as it's winter here,
17:25and it will be warm in Egypt.
17:28Please, do this as a favor to me.
17:33Okay, I'll stay with you tonight,
17:36and go to that lady tomorrow morning.
17:39Thank you, my friend.
17:42In the morning, the bird removed the prince's red jewel
17:47and flew in the direction the prince had indicated.
17:50The bird flew over the city,
17:53and then over the palace.
17:57The bird saw a few girls dancing,
18:00and a beautiful girl standing in a window.
18:04Oh! I wish I could get my dress in a day or two.
18:09Why does that lady take so long to stitch?
18:13The bird flew over the city,
18:15crossed the river, and reached near a village,
18:19where he saw the lady sleeping in her small house.
18:23The bird put the red jewel on the table.
18:26Then, he flew around the bed, over the baby boy.
18:31With the moving air around his face,
18:33the baby boy fell asleep.
18:36The bird flew back to the prince.
18:39On his way back to the city,
18:41the bird went to the river as he was very thirsty.
18:45When the bird was drinking water from the river,
18:48a rider saw him there and thought,
18:51Oh! The bird is still here.
18:54It didn't migrate to any warm climate.
18:57He is fighting with the climate not suitable for him.
19:01I should learn something from him.
19:03Although I'm starving, but I should finish my story soon.
19:09The bird then returned to the prince,
19:12and the rider returned to his house with a story in his mind.
19:17It's strange. I'm feeling warm, although it's cold out there.
19:23It's the warmth of the good deed you've done today.
19:27Yes, you're right. I'll fly to Egypt tomorrow.
19:32Don't go, please. I need one more favor from you.
19:37Oh no! What is it now?
19:41Far away from the city, I can see a writer who is writing a story,
19:45but can't complete it as he is starving.
19:48And there is no fire in his room either.
19:51He stays in a little room on the top of a house.
19:55What do you want me to do then?
19:57You take one of my eyes and give it to him.
20:02Your eye? I can't do that.
20:06Please do it. It's a precious blue stone from India.
20:10It'll help the writer to live a good life.
20:13Okay. I'll stay with you tonight and go to the writer tomorrow morning.
20:18The next morning, the bird took out one of the prince's eyes
20:22and flew away to the writer's house.
20:25He found the house easily and entered through the hole in the roof.
20:30The writer was sitting on his table with his head down.
20:33The bird kept the blue stone on his table and flew away.
20:38The writer looked up at the stone.
20:42Did I say it is a gift from one of my readers?
20:45Thank you, my anonymous friend.
20:48The writer was happy to have the precious blue stone.
20:52As the moon came up, the bird returned to the prince.
20:57I've come to say goodbye to you.
20:59I'm going to Egypt tomorrow morning.
21:03Would you please stay with me for one more night?
21:07Oh, prince! It'll be winter here,
21:10and there will be sun and warmth in Egypt.
21:13I must go there at the earliest.
21:17Please stop, for the sake of a little girl's life.
21:20A little girl's life?
21:23Yes. There is a little girl in the square.
21:26She was selling the eggs, but they have fallen down and they are broken.
21:31Now the girl has no money to take home.
21:34Her father will hit her if she goes home without money.
21:38How do you want me to help her?
21:40Take out my other eye and give it to the girl.
21:43Her father will earn good money by selling it.
21:46Thus, he won't force the little girl to work.
21:49Rather, he'll send her to school.
21:53No. No.
21:55I'll stay with you, but I can't take out your other eye.
21:59You won't be able to see then.
22:02Please do it. Please.
22:05The bird was feeling very sad to take out the prince's second eye.
22:10He took the jewel to the girl and dropped it in her hands.
22:15The girl was very happy to see the jewel.
22:19What a beautiful piece of glass!
22:23And she ran to her home.
22:25The bird returned to the prince.
22:29He felt very bad for the prince as the prince now had no eyes.
22:35You are a good prince. I won't go to Egypt.
22:40No. Now you please go to Egypt.
22:43It'll be difficult for you to survive here in the winter.
22:47No. I won't leave you.
22:50And the bird stayed there.
22:52He told the prince many stories and entertained him.
22:56The prince was happy to hear them.
22:59Oh my friend, please fly over the city and tell me what is going on.
23:04The bird flew over the city and told the prince what all he saw.
23:10The bird then returned to the prince.
23:13Rich people are enjoying eating and drinking in their houses.
23:17On the other hand, the poor people are still starving for food and looking for shelter.
23:24I saw a few small kids suffering in this winter.
23:28They're staying under a bridge, but the guard didn't allow them to stay there either.
23:34I'm covered with fine gold.
23:36Take them and distribute them to the poor ones.
23:40They should not suffer.
23:44The bird sadly took off all the gold from the prince's body
23:50and gave it to the needy people.
23:54They were happy to receive some gold.
23:58I'll have my bread now.
24:01I'll have my bread now.
24:04I'll have my bread now.
24:07I'll have my bread now.
24:09And then came the snow.
24:11The whole city was covered with the snow.
24:15The bird couldn't survive in that freezing cold.
24:18He died one night.
24:20When the prince came to know this next morning,
24:23something cracked inside him.
24:26It was the prince's metal heart, which broke.
24:29When people saw the dead bird at the prince's feet,
24:33they complained about it.
24:35A few officers came to the prince.
24:41Isn't the prince looking ugly?
24:43Yes, he looks more like a beggar than a prince.
24:48And the dead bird at his feet, yuck!
24:50Who will clean this mess?
24:53I think we should remove this statue from this place.
24:56We'll replace it with another one.
24:59They removed the statue and burnt it.
25:02But the broken heart of the statue didn't burn.
25:07So, they threw it away.
25:12After a couple of days,
25:14the servants of God returned to heaven with two things
25:18and offered it to God.
25:21What have you got for me?
25:23There was a bird and a broken metal heart.
25:27God asked them why those were the best things of the city.
25:31The servants told God that the heart belongs to the statue of the happy prince.
25:36You did a good job.
25:38Really, both these things are the best.
25:41I'll keep them in my garden.
25:43The bird will sing beautiful songs
25:45and the happy prince will stand in my city of gold.
