00:00Once upon a time, the king of a great land passed away and left his queen and their daughter behind.
00:09And there was a good fairy too, who was fond of the princess and helped her mother to watch over her.
00:17When she grew up, she was betrothed to a prince who lived a great way off.
00:23And as the time grew near for her to be married,
00:26she got ready to set off on her journey to his country.
00:30The mother packed all the jewels and royal garments for her daughter.
00:35My dear child, now take these jewels and precious stones with you and be happy with your prince.
00:43And she gave her a warm embrace.
00:46My dear child, now take these jewels and precious stones with you and be happy with your prince.
00:52And she gave her a waiting maid to ride with her and gave her into the bridegroom's hands.
00:59And each had a horse for the journey.
01:02Now the princess's horse was the fairy's gift and it was called Falada and could speak.
01:11Oh wait, I have something else for you.
01:15She took a pair of scissors and cut a lock of her hair.
01:19Take care of it dear child, for it is a charm that may be of use to you on the road.
01:26The princess said her goodbyes to her mother and fairy godmother,
01:31and left with her maid and her horse Falada.
01:35After many hours of traveling, the princess was thirsty and said to her maid,
01:42Pray fetch me some water dear maid.
01:45If you are thirsty my dear princess, get off your horse yourself and lie down and drink out the water.
01:51I am not your servant.
01:54The shocked princess got off her horse.
01:57She bent down over the water in the stream and drank.
02:01Suddenly the magical lock of hair said,
02:05Poor princess, if only your mother knew, her heart would break.
02:10But the king's daughter was humble, said nothing, and mounted her horse again.
02:16After more hours of traveling, she was thirsty once more,
02:20and when they came to a stream of water, she said to her maid,
02:25Pray fetch me some water dear maid.
02:29As I said, get it yourself.
02:33Again the princess got off her horse.
02:36She bent down over the water in the stream and drank.
02:40Then the lock of hair said,
02:43If only your mother knew, her heart would break.
02:47The maid is not obedient.
02:50But be careful princess, don't bend so much.
02:54Oh, I am falling into the river.
02:58The lock of hair fell out of her pocket and floated away with the water.
03:03Then the maid said,
03:05Ha ha ha, now you are weak and powerless.
03:09From now on I give the orders and you must obey me.
03:13Now take off your dress and give it to me and you will wear mine.
03:17I am now the princess, and if you tell anybody about this, you will regret it.
03:25The maid wore the princess's dress and mounted her horse Falada.
03:29And the true bride rode the bad horse.
03:33Finally they arrived at the royal palace.
03:36The prince went to meet them and took the maid as his would-be bride.
03:43Welcome to the palace my dear princess.
03:46I am so happy to be here.
03:49Who is this girl?
03:52She is my maid.
03:54She is my companion, but I don't like her.
03:57I was wondering, prince, if you have some work for her.
04:02Well, I don't have any work for her,
04:05but I have a little boy named Kurdkin who could take care of the geese.
04:10She may help him.
04:12Oh, and prince, I need another favor.
04:17Please get rid of the horse on which I rode here.
04:20I almost fell on the road because of him.
04:23In fact, the maid knows that Falada, the horse, can speak,
04:27and it might tell how she behaved with the real princess.
04:31She carried her point, and the faithful Falada was killed.
04:36But when the true princess heard of it, she wept,
04:39and begged the man to nail up Falada's head against a large dark gate of the city,
04:45through which she had to pass every morning and evening.
04:49That there she might still see him sometimes.
04:53As you wish, dear.
04:56And he nailed the head up under the dark gate.
04:59Early the next morning, as she and Kurdkin went out through the gate,
05:04she said sorrowfully,
05:06Falada, Falada, there thou hangest.
05:12Bride, bride, there thou gangest.
05:15Alas, alas, if thy mother knew it, sadly, sadly, she would rue it.
05:22Then they went out of the city, and drove the geese on,
05:26and when she came to the meadow, she sat down upon a bank there,
05:31and let down her waving locks of hair, which were all of pure silver.
05:36And when Kurdkin saw it glitter in the sun, he ran up,
05:40and would have pulled some of her locks out, but she cried.
05:44Blow, breezes, blow, let Kurdkin's hat go.
05:48Blow, breezes, blow, let him after it go.
05:52O'er hills, dales, and rocks, away be it whirled,
05:56till the silvery locks all are combed and curled.
06:00Then there came a wind so strong, that it blew off Kurdkin's hat,
06:05and away it flew over the hills, and he was forced to turn and run after it.
06:11By the time he came back, she had done combing and curling her hair,
06:16and had put it up again safely.
06:19Then he was very angry and sulky, and would not speak to her at all.
06:24They watched the geese until it grew dark in the evening,
06:28and then drove them homewards.
06:33The same thing repeated for two days, and one evening,
06:38Kurdkin went to the old king complaining.
06:41I cannot have that strange girl to help me to keep the geese any longer.
06:46Instead of doing any good, she does nothing but tease me all day long.
06:53Kurdkin, I know you are not telling the entire story.
06:58Yell me what happened, or...
07:01Then the king made him tell him what had happened,
07:05and Kurdkin went on telling the king what had happened.
07:09Hmm, you carry on with your work. I'll look into the matter.
07:15When morning came, the king placed himself behind the dark gate,
07:20and heard how the princess spoke to Falada, and how Falada answered.
07:26Then he went into the field, and hid himself in a bush by the meadow side,
07:32and he soon saw with his own eyes how she let down her hair that glittered in the sun.
07:39And then he heard her say,
07:42Blow breezes blow, let Kurdkin's hat go.
07:46Blow breezes blow, let him after it go.
07:50Over hills, dales, and rocks, away be it whirled,
07:54till the silvery locks are all combed and curled.
07:58And soon came a gale of wind, and carried away Kurdkin's hat,
08:03and away went Kurdkin after it,
08:06while the girl went on combing and curling her hair.
08:10All this time the old king saw, so he went home without being seen.
08:16And when the little goose girl came back in the evening,
08:20the king called her aside, and asked her why she did this so,
08:25but she burst into tears.
08:29That I must not tell you or any man, or I shall lose my life.
08:35But the old king begged so hard,
08:37that she had no peace till she had told him all the tale,
08:41from beginning to end, word for word.
08:44And it was very lucky for her that she did so.
08:49No harm shall come upon you dear princess.
08:52I will right the wrong done to you.
08:54Now I want you to get dressed as the princess would.
08:59When she did, he gazed on her with wonder.
09:02She was so beautiful.
09:04Then he called his son, and told him that he had only a false bride,
09:10for that she was merely a waiting maid, while the true bride stood by.
09:17She is your true bride my son.
09:20Then I must be very lucky father.
09:24And the young prince rejoiced when he saw her beauty,
09:27and heard how meek and patient she had been.
09:30And without saying anything to the false bride,
09:34the king ordered a great feast to be got ready for all his court.
09:40Tonight we celebrate the truth, and punish the lie.
09:46The bridegroom sat at the top,
09:48with the false princess on one side, and the true one on the other.
09:53But nobody knew her again,
09:55for her beauty was quite dazzling to their eyes.
09:59And she did not seem at all like the little goose girl,
10:03now that she had her brilliant dress on.
10:07How dare she!
10:09When they had eaten and drunk, and were very merry,
10:13the old king stood up asking for attention.
10:16Tonight I tell you all a tale.
10:20Listen to me carefully.
10:23So he began, and told all the story of the princess,
10:27as if it was the one that he once heard.
10:31And he asked the true waiting maid,
10:33what she thought ought to be done to anyone who would behave thus.
10:38What would you do with such a liar?
10:42Nothing better.
10:44Nothing better.
10:46She should be thrown in the jail forever.
10:49Thou art she, and as thou hast judged thyself,
10:54so shall it be done to thee.
10:58The maid was punished as per her own words,
11:02and the young king was then married to his true wife.
11:06And they reigned over the kingdom in peace and happiness all their lives.
11:11And the good fairy came to see them,
11:13and restored the faithful Falada to life again.
