00:00So many moments in that game, it was a tense game.
00:03But your ace goes out to the mound and does ace stuff.
00:0512 up, 12 down, 7 strikeouts before he even bat an eye.
00:09Settles in, still goes 7, including facing the heart of the order in that 7th inning.
00:14He was feeling it.
00:15He was taunting the crowd.
00:17He was, he was buzzing.
00:19But there's this dread in the back of your mind going,
00:21they're going to waste this Scooble start.
00:23They turn double plays, they're playing good defense, they're pitching,
00:26they just need one run.
00:29John, they got three.
00:30You just heard it there from Dickerson.
00:32Kerry Carpenter, not only two outs, but two strikes.
00:35Klasse leaves him back-to-back sliders over the heart of the plate,
00:39and he didn't miss the second time.
00:41It's the first home run Klasse has given up to a left-handed batter all season.
00:46It's, it's the only home run he's given off on a slider this season.
00:52It's Kerry Carpenter hitting the hardest ball off of Klasse this year.
00:56And it's the Tigers who have now evened this up one-to-one.
00:59And John, think about what this means.
01:01Klasse, that's their one big bad guy at the end of the bullpen
01:05that nobody can hit.
01:06Well, he's not unhittable anymore.
01:08It takes the wind out of their sails.
01:09They come to Detroit and the pressure's all on them.
01:12They need to win both of these games,
01:15because if they only win one,
01:18Tarek Scooble's coming back,
01:20and he's going to wreck their season on Saturday.
01:23He's going to terrorize them.
01:24They have to win both at a zoo of a ballpark.
01:28Comerica Park is going to be a decade in waiting.
01:31Loud, raucous, and electric.
01:33Good luck, Cleveland.
01:34This is why we said don't panic, John.
01:36That game yesterday was everything.
01:39It's 8-9.
01:41Gritty getting on base.
01:42It's a pinch hitter,
01:44Carpenter, who wasn't in the opening lineup, delivering.
01:46It's everything this team has done,
01:48and it's hard not to get emotional about it.
01:50So we've opened up the phone lines,
01:51248-539-9797.
01:54There's a Carpenter question.
01:56I said it's the biggest home run the Tigers have hit
01:59since Maglio.
02:00In my life, only Maglio hit a bigger home run.
02:04Jeff Rieger last night
02:06said he thought that was bigger.
02:08And Tom, you said Caputo echoed the same thoughts on his show.
02:10He thought Carpenter's home run was bigger.
02:13Yeah, and I was surprised by that.
02:14And you know, look, it's this is an opinion thing, okay?
02:17Yeah, but Pat is pretty studious with baseball.
02:20And I definitely have a massive respect for him
02:23on something like this when he puts his opinion towards it.
02:25And he said, and along with Rieger,
02:28they, you know, saddle this to Class A
02:32being in the pitcher.
02:34You know, the Mags went up against
02:36Houston Street in that moment.
02:38He was a solid reliever, but nothing like Class A.
02:40Class A's been referred to as Mariano Rivera.
02:43By the way, remember that shot I took at him yesterday?
02:46I had to give way.
02:47I was waiting for that one saying nobody's invincible.
02:50You know, but yeah, they both said Carpenter because of the
02:54moment.
02:55You know, the Tigers were scoreless for 17 and two-thirds
02:58innings here, and they, you, when I was sitting there,
03:01I kept looking out at that box score on the scoreboard in
03:03between innings and had all the makings of a team that was
03:07going to blow an ace's awesome outing, especially with the
03:10guys left on base.
03:11I mean, Cleveland didn't have base runners.
03:12They had some threatening moments, you know, and I think
03:17it just changed the series.
03:19And they, I equated this to watching Class A because he
03:23didn't pitch to Vierling and Vierling got on, they kind of
03:27bobbled it and Class A didn't get over in time.
03:29He was rattled maybe a little bit.
03:31Absolutely was. Watching him walk to the dugout in person
03:34reminding me of Patrick Waugh walking off in game seven
03:37against the Wings when they got, when the Wings scored
03:40four in the first and they pulled him.
03:42That's an all-timer.
03:43I mean, this is going to be one that people reference forever.
03:47Sure.
03:47I mean, it's Aizerman's double OT.
03:49It's Taishan's block.
03:51It's St.
03:51Brown clinching a playoff game.
03:53You could put it in the Pantheon, but to me, you want to
03:56talk about what that home run did.
03:58It evened the series.
04:00Maglio ended the series.
04:02This evened the ALDS.
04:04Maglio sent the Tigers to the World Series.
04:07Maglio was at home.
04:08It was a walk-off.
04:09There was no half inning coming up later.
04:10There was no other game in the series.
04:12The Tigers are going to the World Series.
04:14No disrespect to Pat who knows baseball.
04:17No disrespect to Rieger, although, you know, we like to
04:19throw that to him.
04:20Maglio's home run is better.
04:22Bigger, better.
04:24However, you want to phrase it.
04:25It's the best since Maglio.
04:27Yes.
04:27And to me, it was, Maglio's was the best since Kirk Gibson.
04:32See, and that was before I was alive.
04:34Right.
04:34So, and I'm cautioning myself not to go full, you know,
04:38stony on this, but I'm not that old.
04:42And there are a lot of people listening that when that
04:45happened, it, I rank them as Gibby's because that was in
04:49the World Series.
04:50He doesn't want to walk you.
04:51And then it was Mag's because it was to go to the World
04:55Series.
04:56And then I put Kerry Carpenter's third and I don't want
04:59to disparage what happened yesterday, but it's, it didn't
05:03seal the series.
05:04It sent it home with the advantage, but the just those
05:09two to me will always remain above what Kerry Carpenter
05:14did because of the situation, because the context of which
05:17they happened.
05:18I remained and this is so lame right now to be determined
05:22on this.
05:22I need to see how this plays out because Mags did send them.
05:26Oh boy.
05:27Here he goes.
05:28He's looking for.
05:29Yeah, I've been doing that a lot lately and what's gotten
05:32into you look because I do think they need to advance for
05:35this to live in a, you know, in infamy.
05:38Yeah, and I kind of equated to the Aizerman double OT goal,
05:42which I was in person for and I spontaneously bought tickets
05:45for much like this and both games were 0-0 and it was coming
05:49down to the line and that was a game-clinching goal by Aizerman.
05:53It's always lost a little luster for me because they've failed
05:56and they didn't win and I think they got to at least win
05:58this series to put this up above Mags.
06:01I what I asked I think what I think an important question
06:04to ask here.
06:05Gibby Mags and Carp.
06:08I think John nailed the order.
06:09What what happens if they don't hit it?
06:15Well, if they don't hit it, it's still 0-0 yesterday and
06:19Klasse is likely leaving the game in short order.
06:22I don't know what happens.
06:24If Maglio doesn't hit the home run.
06:27The Tigers are still tied.
06:30Two on right?
06:32Yeah, maybe they still score the run or maybe ask it.
06:35Well, what if they all got out?
06:36Okay.
06:39I think John nailed the order though because it's not about
06:41what if they didn't it's that they did and what them doing
06:44it accomplished.
06:45It's a home run in the World Series.
06:46I think the only thing that tops Maglio in my lifetime is
06:49if someone wins a World Series game with a home run or wins
06:52the entire World Series with a home run it Carpenter didn't
06:56do those things and it's not to take away from it.
06:58We're all buzzing.
06:59We all love the hit.
07:00It's just if you're going to say it's better than Maglio.
07:03I need more than just well, it kept the series afloat Maglio
07:07ended the series.
07:08There was no coming back.
07:09There was no historic 3-0 comeback for the A's.
07:12It's over the Tigers are going to the World Series as great
07:15as Carpenter's moment was last night as I woke up this morning
07:18John the Tigers are not in the World Series, right?
07:22You know, I think for now I will say Mags, but I think there's
07:26room for this to be come bigger.
07:28You know, we're just this is still soaking in and it happened
07:31what 13 hours ago, right?
07:34And I know this that when Mags hit his I jumped up in euphoria
07:40and I had the similar experience with my kids and my wife
07:42yesterday at the game, you know, that was this the similarity
07:47was it was very even in terms of just pure joy ecstasy hugging
07:51people high-fiving strangers, you know, and I just I believe
07:56for this the Trump Mags.
07:58They've got to win the series.
