00:00Credit to Ken Holland, didn't he say it takes 10 years?
00:04Put Ken Holland on the poll.
00:0810 years. It's been 10 years since the playoffs. What else? This is why I always say, let it play out.
00:16I mean, does it...
00:19Is there a better example than this?
00:24Scott Harris calculated the Tigers were not a playoff team in this offseason, and every move he's made since
00:30has been done to prove he was right. This run was done in spite of Scott Harris.
00:34He gets no credit and should probably be fired for malfeasance on the ticket text. Okay, nobody's firing Scott Harris.
00:40No. Not even me. Not even you, who's asking to take back one of the strikes within the next six days.
00:46I do think that text though is largely correct that this was not the plan. Scott didn't plan for the playoffs.
00:51He made moves that were not about making the playoffs this season. This was done in spite of the decisions that he made.
00:57But,
01:00they didn't block any of the bats. Yeah. And now the bats are, I wouldn't say
01:07ultra productive, they're very opportunistic. Okay, how about this point?
01:12Scott Harris sets the roster.
01:15Javi Baez was on the roster for the most part of this season, and when Javi disappeared, this team went on a run.
01:21So what if Scott didn't have Javi Baez on the roster for most of the season? Is that a fair critique?
01:27No. No? They had to. Who had to what?
01:32Jim, you're buying out a guy for 98 million before the season? That's unreasonable in sports. Yeah.
01:37That's just, you're being unreasonable. Nobody's gonna do that. Nobody's ever done that in the history of sports.
01:42I think that, I don't, do not think you should be on this team next year.
01:46You're at the halfway point of the contract,
01:47you've given him every chance you can, and I do just think it makes no sense for him to be here.
01:52I'll say this about Javi being gone.
01:55People, nobody in that clubhouse or the manager's gonna throw him under the bus, okay, of his presence, okay?
02:02They got, started getting hot in, what, the 10th or so of August?
02:07Yeah. Then they went to the Little League Classic.
02:10Yeah. And they had that big win, and they have said that this was somewhat of a turning point for us.
02:14Yep. And then they let Javi play in Chicago.
02:19Respect, you know? Right after that, he's gone.
02:23Seems a little fishy to me, and it seems a little coincidental.
02:26Yep. Trey Sweeney's better.
02:28Oh, yeah. We never thought that he would, he was a throw-in in this trade.
02:32It's why I did say the thing you can give Harris credit for, eye for talent.
02:36Sweeney was not a throw-in in that deal, as he was discussed at the time.
02:40He's been an addition that's helped this baseball team.
02:42Yeah. 248-539-9797.
02:46Monday, if they make the playoffs, Monday is gonna be a very special edition of the Costa and Jansen show.
02:52Okay. Why's that?
02:53We might see the removal of strike two.
02:56Yes.
02:57We might have a special guest on the show.
03:01TicketTexture says, beware, you guys are declaring the playoffs already.
03:05Three big games coming up. Tampa's won four in a row, seven of the last ten.
03:10Let's see what happens first before we start planning the playoff rotation.
03:13Yes. I don't disagree with that, but we are allowed to enjoy the moment.
03:19And part of enjoying the moment is the fact that they are, right now, controlling their own destiny.
03:25TicketTexture says, Chris Spielman's hands are clearly all over this roster.
03:29Anyone with eyes can see it. Who deserves credit?
03:31I do like, on Twitch here, I just turned it back on, and I think Chris Filar may have given a nickname.
03:40What did he say?
03:42Jackson Fireballs Jobe.
03:44I don't think it's gonna catch on, but none of this has made sense.
03:49If he's gonna come in as a reliever, you could have, I don't know the name of the song.
03:54Fireball.
03:55Yeah.
03:56That could be his walk-up music.
03:58Sure. We're workshopping this on the fly.
04:01Why not?
04:02Let's do it.
04:03Get back to the phones. Matt in Sterling Heights, good morning. You're on 97.1.
04:08Hey, what's going on, guys?
04:10So, I'm sitting here, and I know you guys are being cheeky with comparing Avila to Mayhew or Millen,
04:19but just a quick one. None of the players that Millen or Mayhew drafted were here when the Lions started winning.
04:26Almost the entire roster is made up of people Avila drafted that are now everyone's cheering for.
04:33So, I know that you can't admit you're wrong when you chase a guy out of town when he was set up to fail from day one,
04:40but hopefully he's sitting somewhere laughing and smiling at what's going on.
04:45The other thing, too, you might want to compare him instead to Iserman, because when Iserman was in Tampa,
04:50he drafted a lot of players, but they never won anything when he was there.
04:54But now everyone gives Iserman the credit for building Tampa, for building up the Lightning.
04:59It's the same thing Avila did here.
05:01Sure, he signed some crummy free agents, whatever, but the group that people are cheering for all came from that guy,
05:08and I hope he's laughing at everybody.
05:10John is shrugging and Tom is saying, hang up on this man, silence him, get him off the radio.
05:16I don't think we're comparing, as cheeky as we're being, we're not comparing Avila to Mayhew, we're comparing him to Bob Quinn.
05:24Right, because that was the whole bit. Bob Quinn drafted the majority of this offensive line,
05:27yet people aren't giving Bob Quinn credit for this, they're giving Holmes and Campbell credit for this.
05:33The guys who took what they were given and got more out of them, right?
05:38That would be the argument for Scott Harris and some player development,
05:40it's certainly the argument for A.J. Hinch and Chris Federer and this pitching staff,
05:44they get the credit.
05:45I guess we don't hold a Justin Verlander trade against this guy anymore.
05:49I mean, that return's so awesome, I love all the guys from that trade that's helping this team.
05:52I mean, that only delayed this three years.
05:55Significantly.
05:56I mean, seriously, the Justin Verlander trade is probably,
05:59is truly probably the worst trade in Detroit sports history when you think about it.
06:03I don't disagree.
06:04But, you know, let's give that guy credit.
06:06The worst free agent signing in the history of Detroit sports.
06:10I would argue that 100% that's Javi Baez.
06:13The worst trade in the worst free agent signing.
06:15But, way to go Al.
06:18I was going to say, it's Javi and it was Jordan Zimmerman, people forget about that deal.
06:21That was terrible.
06:22Both of them were Al Avila signings.
06:24When he was given the chance to spend, he whiffed pretty epically both times.
06:28We got calls to get to, credit to handout.
06:31Tigers in the final week of the regular season, control their own destiny.
06:35Job is here.
06:36We want to get your thoughts on it.
