The Boston Celtics have finished their training camp and kicked off their 2024-25 NBA preseason with a pair of wins over the Denver Nuggets in Abu Dhabi. And around the rest of the league, preseasons are kicking off with the last of the trades and signings we are likely to see until the month of December having been finalized.

With these data points, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast took a last look at which teams we think will find success in the 2024-24 regular season, which teams are likely to capture the (Cooper) Flagg, and what we learned from Boston's wins in the United Arab Republic about how the Celtics will play this coming campaign.

We gamified the "Lab" portion of our programming into a friendly wager among the cohosts, so if you have an idea of what the winner (or the losers) should do, be sure to let us know with a comment on the social media network formerly known as Twitter.

00:00Alrighty, welcome to the Celtics Hub podcast brought to you by Bryce Bix, the exclusive
00:12fantasy basketball partner of the CNS Media Network.
00:15And by Game Time Tickets, last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed.
00:18I'm your host Cameron Tubbs, I'm joined by Dr. Justin Quinn and Alex Goldberg.
00:23He's back from off tour.
00:25And in today's program, as you probably know from the show title or the thumbnail or whatever,
00:29we're going to try our first ever Celtics Lab Wins Pool.
00:32I'm going to be honest, this is something they do on the Hoop Collective, one of my
00:34favorite basketball podcasts.
00:36I know other people do it too.
00:38Basically, we are going to have a little draft.
00:41We'll each get 10 teams in the NBA and at the end of the season, whichever person has
00:47the group of 10 teams with the most wins in the regular season wins our little pool.
00:52We haven't yet decided on a prize, but regardless of the lab portion of the programming, we're
00:58going to be doing all of that.
01:00Before that, we'll do the news.
01:01But before that, if you guys are, yeah, if you have a suggestion for what we should be
01:07wagering on, I don't know, shoot us a Twitter message or something.
01:13If you are down for the cause of listening to us do our wins pool, you must be a fan
01:16of the podcast.
01:17So you must be a fan of us, which means I'm just going to take some time to get updates
01:20from my friends, Justin and Alex, because Justin went on a business trip to Cancun that
01:25is literally a Mad Lib come to life and Alex is on tour.
01:28So Justin, how was Cancun?
01:30How was your Mad Lib?
01:32Well, you know, speaking right now from Mexico City, where we are currently still being rained
01:37on by the hurricane that is barreling towards my family in Florida, it was a similar scene
01:42at the end of the trip of Helene passing right by Cancun for the last day that I was there.
01:48But before that, I got to see Katie Ledecky speak, got to talk to her a little bit, didn't
01:54really get enough to put into the interview or the interviews that I created a story about
01:58why, you may have wondered this as well, raising canes has been so interesting.
02:03Athletes Al Horford, Drew Holley are just a few from the Boston area.
02:07And this is something they've been doing across the country.
02:10So I took a look into that across the continent, apparently.
02:13Yeah.
02:14Yeah.
02:15Good point.
02:16Good point.
02:17Yeah.
02:18So Justin, I write for Celtics Wire, which is part of a suite of sites.
02:20So the story he did about his business trip to Cancun with Katie Ledecky and Snoop Dogg
02:24lives on Rookie Wire.
02:25If you search Justin Quinn Rookie Wire, I'm sure you'll find it.
02:28Alex, who plays bass in a band called Divine Sweater, who does our intro music.
02:32I think you know that at this point, dear listener, Alex, you were like on tour throughout
02:37the Midwest.
02:38And I got a show coming up in Boston, right?
02:40Yes, that is correct.
02:42So we just wrapped up our run, both in the Midwest, and then also a little bit up the
02:46East Coast, including North Carolina and DC.
02:50Very fun.
02:51A lot of good crowds, a lot of good energy.
02:52But the headline story is Boston.
02:56For those of you who are Celtics Lab listeners who reside in the city of Boston, in which
03:02the Celtics are based, we're going to be opening for the California Honey Drops at House of
03:06Blues on Wednesday.
03:08So if you want to come to that this coming Wednesday, next Wednesday, I'm glad to clarify.
03:14If you want to come to that, get tickets on our website and then come through and come
03:19through for the early part, because that's what we're going to be on.
03:22And then yeah, this is going to be the show where Alex finally gets the crowd to, to record
03:28a buffer where the crowd says, already welcome to the Celtics Up podcast, right, Alex?
03:32Correct.
03:33Yes.
03:34But you have to get there.
03:36And because we're the opener, we have a really tight timeline.
03:38So we have we have to get there and you have to get there quickly, we have to fill in quickly.
03:43So dear listener, please feel free to come through.
03:47We'd love to have you.
03:48I would love to talk Celtics with you, as well as many other things.
03:52And if you're in the greater Massachusetts area, we'll also be playing a festival in
03:57Hingham, Massachusetts on Sunday.
04:00So you got two shots in the Massachusetts area.
04:04Feel free to come through.
04:05Love to talk.
04:06Would love to meet you and would love to play some songs for you.
04:11For the YouTube crowd, they know this, but Justin just dropped from the call.
04:14So we have all the time in the world.
04:16What's been the best song to play off the new album?
04:18I don't like it's just the most fun or like the crowd seems to connect with it.
04:22Probably the eponymous A Time For Everything, the title track for our album, which you can
04:28find on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, etc.
04:31It's named A Time For Everything and the song for which the album is named is extremely
04:35good and very fun to play live.
04:37So I would go with that personally.
04:39What song has the best bass solo?
04:43None of this album really has bass solo.
04:45There are prominent bass lines throughout, but I wouldn't necessarily call them solos.
04:51We're trying to really tighten the sound as much as possible.
04:54That sounds like you're getting the squeeze.
04:58All right.
04:59I guess we're going to do the news that Justin I wonder where it went.
05:03Hopefully we this is still usable.
05:06All right.
05:07Well, the news.
05:09Oh, here it comes.
05:10He's back.
05:11Probably the biggest basketball news of consequences happened today.
05:15In fact, Shams Charania, formerly of the Athletic, is now the not the heir apparent, but the
05:22heir to the Adrian Wojnarowski throne.
05:25He took basically Woj's old job.
05:27I think ESPN would agree with that framework.
05:31I don't think we're that surprised to either of you have a take on that.
05:34It's hugely consequential because that's a big news broker.
05:38Actually, I do have a take, but I'm curious if anyone else here does.
05:41Yeah.
05:42My only take.
05:43Sorry, go ahead.
05:44No, you go first.
05:45The only take that I have is that I never really thought any of those people from other
05:50sports reporting were going to jump in and take over those relationships.
05:53That seemed a bit of a farfetched proposition.
05:57This is the most expected outcome of that very small offseason drama.
06:02Yeah.
06:03My only take on this is that I'm bummed that laying off Zach Lowe was almost certainly
06:07a part of this in order to secure the necessary bank that it probably took to get Shams to
06:14come over to ESPN.
06:16Obviously, Shams is very good at his job.
06:18He's built a pretty serious rep as the primary competitor to Woj and now the successor to
06:24Woj and you don't get that by doing nothing.
06:28That being said, it's another reflection on what is increasingly a scoop and Twitter
06:35scoop driven news economy as opposed to doing interesting and good basketball analysis,
06:41which I think is a bummer because I really, really like Zach Lowe and his podcast, even
06:47if I was disagreeing with some of his assessments more and more in recent years.
06:54good at his job and I guess I'm just a little bummed that increasingly it just seems to
06:59be that ESPN is gearing everything towards TV and Twitter as opposed to long form hoops
07:05analysis.
07:06Yeah, I mean, that's a good read.
07:08I've only met Shams here or there.
07:10He seems like a nice enough guy, but he's not.
07:15He's transactional.
07:16He produces headlines in the news and so it does kind of feel like that's where ESPN is
07:22trending towards.
07:23I guess one of the things that I it occurred to me is I think we've talked about this before.
07:29The Celtics are airtight.
07:31They really like move quietly through the world.
07:35If ever things got out, it was usually through Woj.
07:39So I'm curious how that dynamic plays plays out.
07:41I know that like Jalen Brown has a relationship with the athletic.
07:45Maybe he grew to have a relationship with Shams, but I'm curious if there was that.
07:51The series two years ago in the Celtics were beating the Sixers and right before the game,
07:56like a story about Doc came out by way of Woj and everyone knew that Doc asked Woj to
08:02write that story.
08:04The Celtics don't seem to have a relationship like that with Shams and so it's just like
08:07interesting that some people use Shams as their like mouthpiece in the court of public
08:13opinions and now he has moved teams from the athletic to ESPN.
08:19I don't think it affects the Celtics.
08:21The Celtics are so tight lipped, but we'll see.
08:26Some more news.
08:27I think Justin is having bad Wi-Fi, not me, right, Alex?
08:34Little sketchy from both of you, if I'm being honest, but it's fine.
08:37We'll just keep it real good.
08:38Wait a minute.
08:39I'm never kidding.
08:40Yeah.
08:41I don't know how that's affecting anything, but sure, why not?
08:44Let's get through that.
08:45Yeah, let's get through the news while we still have Wi-Fi.
08:48Tony Snell got traded from Maine to the Heat G League team.
08:52He's still looking for an NBA deal.
08:54He's in his mid thirties at this point, but we wish him all the best, of course.
08:58Sorry, just really quickly on that, Phoenix Suns, come on, you have no excuse to not sign
09:04Tony Snell.
09:05He's a vet.
09:06He can at the very least hit a corner three still.
09:10You guys desperately need any sort of available minimum talent.
09:15Why not?
09:16Yeah, but so does Miami.
09:17Good point.
09:18Yeah, I actually wouldn't be surprised if he ends up seeing a little floor time with
09:21them just so they kick with tires on them.
09:24We'll see.
09:26So the Celtics have been doing some press stuff since we last talked.
09:30I'll just kind of run through it.
09:31I don't think we have to talk about it.
09:33Derek White and Drew Holliday got a slam cover.
09:36That means that in the past, what is it, two and a half years, Jalen Brown played chess
09:39on slam.
09:40Jason Tatum got a slam cover.
09:41We're going to get the whole damn starting lineup soon enough.

10:37Jalen Brown went on the cover of Time Magazine.
10:40Probably the first Celtic since Larry Bird.
10:44As best I could tell, Larry Bird shared his cover with Wayne Gretzky.
10:48That was the most recent one.
10:49That's correct.
10:50So Jalen's the first solo Celtic in a long time, but it was part of the next 100 Time
10:56Magazine looking at the next hundred leaders, but Jalen Brown got a profile out of that
11:00and it's a really, really good one.
11:01I recommend people read that.
11:02Jalen Brown also went on Hot Ones.
11:04Out of nowhere, Jalen Brown is playing footsie with traditional media.
11:08He's also sharing Celtics Lab on Instagram.
11:11At this point, Jalen, just come on the show, man.
11:14Yeah, seriously.
11:16Yeah, we don't really need to talk about it.
11:19I am curious.
11:21Jalen will both continue to push like Nike is in the wrong and I'm in the right and I'm
11:27willing to talk about it.
11:28And he's slowly playing the role as like traditional athlete and like doing traditional press hits
11:35a little more, which is fascinating.
11:37I think just to briefly touch on that, you know, in Hot Ones, I think one of the things
11:42that jumped out to me is that he really appreciated the interview style of Hot Ones.
11:46He really liked Sean Evans.
11:48He really liked Sean and he was pretty openly, you know, he praised him pretty openly.
11:54And it makes me think that to some degree, now that Jalen has won a title, has won finals
12:00MVP, is pretty clearly stamped as like an elite, high level basketball player.
12:06I wonder if his comfort level with kind of more traditional media outlets has grown to
12:12some degree now that he is to some degree stamped, you know, obviously media will try
12:19and spin narratives about all of the Celtics, Jalen Brown included, because that's part
12:23of their job.
12:24But will stamped, locked in, guaranteed Hall of Famer Jalen Brown now be a little bit more
12:33comfortable with media?
12:35It seems like that might be the case.
12:37Yeah, he said something like part of why he was so effusive with praise for Sean Evans
12:41was that Sean Evans didn't ask the kind of questions that Jalen is used to.
12:45But part of it is he doesn't step outside his comfort zone that often.
12:48He does a lot of his work through like the press conferences, which is pretty cut and
12:52dry, I'll be honest.
12:54So maybe it's a two way street and the more that he goes on Friendly or like Jason Tatum
12:59goes on Jimmy Fallon and like talks about his kid's book.
13:01So he gets the softball questions.
13:04Jalen Brown usually doesn't do those kind of press hits, so he doesn't get asked the
13:07fun questions.
13:08It's all the regurgitated crap that we have to ask 82 times a year.
13:12Anyways, Jalen Brown, just really quickly, if you're listening and interested in coming
13:16on, we are prepared to run full Jalen Brown propaganda over here at Celtics Lab.
13:21It's going to be softballs.
13:22It's going to be questions that you'll know the answers to.
13:25We will do whatever it takes.
13:27I'm more than willing to sacrifice my journalistic integrity.
13:31Or I mean, I've talked to him about being a teacher.
13:33I mean, I'm sure he'd be interested in that.
13:36He's just, he's busier than we are, if we're being honest.
13:42Speaking of busy, the Celtics were busy kicking the Nuggets ass in Abu Dhabi.
13:45How's that for a segway?
13:48Yeah, the Celtics played twice against Denver and Abu Dhabi as part of the first two preseason
13:54games.
13:55They've got three more before the season opens on October 22nd.
13:58This is the fourth time the Celtics have played abroad or the fifth time they've played abroad.
14:01Something like that.
14:02So it's not brand new.
14:04I think we've talked about the Abu Dhabi of it all.
14:06It's interesting.
14:07It does not portend a sale to a billionaire from that part of the world.
14:11But I'm sure there were a lot of handshakes and palms pressed and whatnot.
14:15Justin, from a basketball perspective, what was your most interesting takeaway from our
14:20two preseason games we saw here?
14:23I think, honestly, it's kind of two on both ends of the minutes distribution, if you will.
14:30The first of which is, I guess Lonnie Walker is probably headed to the main Celtics.
14:36He did that particularly well with the time that he had.
14:39He looked a little confused about what he was doing, what he was supposed to be doing.
14:43Some of that is probably due to the fact that, you know, he hasn't played with this team
14:46before and, you know, maybe he's not a good fit.
14:50I guess we're going to find out.
14:51But then the other big thing is I'm a lot more confident about Luke Cornett starting
14:56center.
14:58And, you know, I've seen enough from Xavier Tillman and Mimi Ishikara that I think both
15:03of them will be more than adequate as backup big men playing four to six minutes, maybe
15:07a little bit more for Tillman, like 10, 12, probably.
15:11But generally speaking, I think the big takeaway is that the lower end of the spectrum of playing
15:20time is probably not going to be falling to any new names unless it's maybe Jason Springer
15:26or maybe Jordan Walsh and the big men are pretty good.
15:30I'm going to touch on both of those points really quickly.
15:33I am actually not sure that Lonnie Walker is even necessarily going to be on the main
15:37Celtics.
15:39My thinking being that Lonnie Walker has been in the league for a decent amount of time
15:44now and has gotten an actual run as both a starter and a utility player.
15:50I would not be surprised if rather than doing a G League stint, Lonnie Walker simply asked
15:55to be released outright so that he can go sign with another team, which I would be pretty
15:59shocked if the Celtics didn't grant him that considering that he's on a 10 day.
16:03I think if it's another team, though, it will probably be abroad with an NBA out in his
16:07contract because there's just a lot of players like him right now.
16:11There's just there's no room for them.
16:12That's fair.
16:13Although injuries do happen.
16:14And I wouldn't be surprised if he's somebody's injury to him.
16:18And then on the other point, I totally agree with regard to Luke Cornett.
16:21I didn't get a chance to watch either of the games while they were happening, but I watched
16:25highlights.
16:26To me, you know, one thing that really jumps out is Cornett looked very confident rolling
16:31to the rim.
16:32He looked very confident in his role and what he was doing.
16:35And it makes me think that in particular, three man units with Peyton Pritchard, Luke
16:41Cornett and Sam Hauser are going to be a pretty significant part of Boston's regular season.
16:47You know, those guys have some now pretty established high level championship chemistry,
16:52and it seems like all of them have made some improvements to their game in ways that complement
16:57each other pretty effectively.
16:59I noticed that Sam Hauser has a little bit more dribble drive game going on where he's,
17:04you know, kind of beating guys off the bounce, get taking pull up twos, things like that.
17:09Peyton Pritchard was outstanding in both of these games.
17:12I mean, he looked completely at home, confident, knew exactly where he wanted to get continues
17:18to bomb away from deep, which Joe Missoula, if he's tipped his hand even slightly, it's
17:23clear that the Celtics are going to get potentially very silly from three this year, 61 free threes
17:30in that first preseason game is a little nuts, but we'll see, you know, but those three guys
17:38now with Cornett, Hauser, Pritchard, they've now been on the team for three years.
17:44They've built chemistry up with each other off of the bench in that whole time.
17:48They have championship experience as well as multiple deep playoff runs.
17:52To me, those three guys really make up what I think is going to be the bulwark of this
17:57year's bench unit.
17:59And I would not be surprised at all if you start to see some pretty strong numbers coming
18:04out of those trio that trio when they're on the floor together.
18:09Yeah, last year you saw that trio play with Jason and then either drew or Al a lot, and
18:14I really like those groups because, first of all, Jason could sometimes play at the
18:18four if it was the drew lineup, but it was also a chance for him to play playmaker.
18:24And if he needed to just like take over offensively, it'll be interesting because Alex, to your
18:28point, it feels like that trio is leveled up a little bit.
18:31I mean, having Jason out there is better than not, but it'll be, I'll be curious to see
18:35if that that three is out there, if they still need Jason as that like obvious stabilizing
18:40factor or if he's just like an additive piece.
18:44It's the preseason.
18:45Yeah, the statistical ability for data from preseason to code for the regular season is
18:53pretty limited.
18:54But if you're concerned about the older players or the players who have a lot of miles underneath
19:00their belt having to step in and play a big role, it's so far feels good that to see the
19:06bench play like this.
19:07The theory that I tried on for size the past few weeks is that like maybe they would trade
19:11Pritchard for Walker to step in and be a cheaper facsimile of like a guard off the bench.
19:18That's just not going to happen.
19:20Walker didn't look like he's up for the task and Pritchard is too good.
19:24I last year eight crow on Pritchard and I guess I'm going to eat again because Pritchard
19:28is too damn good to, I mean, like maybe two first round picks at this point.
19:33Like he is a bona fide spark plug.
19:37He knows what he's doing out there, even if he still has, you know, defensive liabilities.
19:41All righty.
19:43So the Celtics have back to back this coming weekend.
19:48They have an eight o'clock.
19:49How's this?
19:50They have a Saturday night eight o'clock home game against the 76 years and then the next
19:55night seven o'clock home game, a Sunday night, but it is a holiday weekend against the Raptors.
20:01And then two or three days later, they're in Toronto for their third and final preseason
20:04game.
20:05So by the time we talk again, we'll see at least two preseason games.
20:09I think I'll be at both of them and we will take the same approach with just to say it's
20:14fun to watch basketball.
20:15I don't know if we learned anything.
20:17I think for that first Philly game, just Jaden Springer, 42 minutes.
20:22Let's get it.
20:23Why not?
20:24I love that.
20:25I love that for Springer.
20:27I told him happy birthday.
20:28I practiced the other day and he seemed genuinely very surprised.
20:31So happy birthday, Jaden Springer, belated happy birthday.
20:35Check out our friends over at Game Time.
20:39Football is back and there's nothing better than being there live.
20:41But let's be honest, finding the right tickets can be a hassle.
20:43That's where Game Time comes in.
20:44And I want to tell you about an awesome new feature called Game Time Picks that makes
20:48it super easy to find the best deals on tickets.
20:51I recently used Game Time to find tickets to go to the Red Sox and I was blown away
20:54by the selection.
20:55There were tons of great seats available.
20:56I was able to find a deal that was way better than anything else I found on any of the other

21:47What time is it?
21:48Game Time.
21:50We're going to transition to the lab portion of the programming.
21:52That's when we take a deeper dive.
21:54That's when we dust off something new.
21:56That's when we play a game.
21:58And what we're going to do is we're going to do a wins pool draft.
22:01So again, we'll go through the entire league, we'll each end up with 10 teams.
22:06And those are going to be our 10 little teams.
22:09And whatever total regular season wins those 10 teams produce will be our scores.
22:16And whoever's group of 10 teams has the biggest score at the end of the season is the big,
22:21big winner.
22:23Please help us come up with cash and prizes.
22:25Otherwise, they'll just be bragging rights, I suppose.
22:28But this is a you'll have to check back in in April to see who won the prize pool.
22:33Again, this they do this on the hoop collective, if you're familiar with that, but I think
22:36other people do this, I guess, like fantasy sports and whatnot.
22:40We decided we would rent we're going to do a snake draft, and we're gonna do a random
22:43number generator to decide the order.
22:47If you watch How About Them Celtics, which you should because that's an excellent podcast.
22:52Jack uses StreamYard, which we're using, and he knows how to put things on screen and like,
22:57and I don't know how to do any of that clever crap.
22:58So I'm going to age myself as a millennial, not Gen Z.
23:02And I'm just going to hold up my phone that has a random number generator on it.
23:06dibs on number two, Justin, do you want to be number one or three?
23:11I'll be number one.
23:13And Alex, perfect.
23:14I wanted to be three the whole time.
23:16I knew it.
23:17I'm gonna, it's the it's set to one.
23:20So I haven't hit it yet.
23:22It's gonna be first to three.
23:24So that just got like really getting the random sauce.
23:26So if you're listening, sorry, but if you're watching, it's also not very good.
23:32So we'll do it quick.
23:33Ready?
23:34That's a three.
23:35That's a one.
23:39That's another one.
23:42That's another three.
23:44That's a two.
23:47That's a one.
23:48So Justin, you can choose what you want.
23:51That's a two.
23:53Another one for good measure and a three.
23:55So Justin, it's going to be a snake draft.
23:57Do you want first pick?
24:00You can have second pick or third and fourth pick.
24:03And then we'll snake from there.
24:05I'll take first pick.
24:06Okay, Alex, do you get second?
24:09Do you get to choose at this point?
24:11I don't know.
24:12I mean, we're making it up.
24:14If I can.
24:15I mean, it was a big, big win for you as number three.
24:19So I'll let you choose.
24:20I would rather have the the back to back give me three and four.
24:25Okay, so he's occasionally listener, you're gonna hear me typing as I bookkeep.
24:31So that means Justin, you are going to get the first pick and our 2024-2025 NBA regular
24:39season wins pool.
24:41So can you please, Justin, tell us what team you think you'd like to add to your pool?
24:48What team do we cover on this podcast?
24:51I'm going to take the Celtics.
24:53I think there's a good argument that they might take their foot off the gas a little
24:58bit psychologically.
24:59But everything that we are hearing, well, the sirens, this is so important to know it's
25:07okay.
25:08It's always fun in Brooklyn here.
25:10No, but seriously, everything we've been hearing from camp, everything we've been hearing from
25:14the players, everything we've heard from Joe is they're treating this season as its own
25:18discrete entity, which to my mind means a very similar approach, which means they're
25:23probably going to be number one in the league in terms of wins.
25:27They may not be 64 wins, maybe 60, 59, something like that, but I'm taking them first for that
25:33reason.
25:34They're going to have the most wins.
25:35It's a good thing.
25:36Yeah.
25:37It's a unanimous.
25:38That was the right pick.
25:39Let's clip this for our friends at CLNS to put on social media.
25:42Let's go around the horn.
25:43Justin, how many wins will the Celtics win next year?
25:4662.
25:47Alex, how many wins will the Celtics win next year?
25:5159, but they'll still have the number one record.
25:54Cameron, how many wins will the Celtics win next year?
25:5860.
26:01A nice even 60.
26:03I don't know if they can use that on social.
26:06We weren't funny enough.
26:09Okay.
26:10Anyways, Cameron has the second pick.
26:12Crap, Ola.
26:18It feels obvious to pick OKC because they're going to be really damn good.
26:23They're going to be young.
26:24They have no reason to not go all out.
26:26They're really deep, but the West is so hard and the tax for playing in the West has got
26:33to be worth a few games, whereas the East, there's so many crappy teams that just by
26:37default you're going to back your ass into a bunch of wins.
26:45With respect to the Oklahoma City Thunder, I'm going to take the New York Knickerbockers
26:52with the number two pick and our wins pool.
26:55I think they're going to be a good team.
26:57I don't think they're as good as the Celtics at all, but they play in the Eastern Conference
27:01and the Eastern Conference is hot garbage this year, at least part of it.
27:07I think the Knicks, by virtue of that, are going to rack up some wins.
27:10Cat, welcome to the Big Apple, buddy.
27:14Alex, you get picks three and four of our draft, so you get the last pick in the first
27:19round and the first pick in the second round.
27:20Take it away.
27:21I'm pretty thrilled with your choice because I am certainly taking the Oklahoma City Thunder
27:26at three.
27:27I just think that they are going into this season as clearly the most talented team in
27:33the Western Conference.
27:34The additions of Hartenstein and of Alex Caruso are hand-in-glove fits.
27:40Mark Dagnold is an excellent coach.
27:41I think Jett Holmgren is going to be a monster this year, and I think that SGA might actually
27:49win MVP outright.
27:51So for me, it's a no-brainer pick.
27:52I understand that the West is hard, but this roster is absolutely stacked to the gills.
27:57I think they're the one seed in the West, and I think they're going to win a whole lot
28:00of regular season games.
28:03My second pick...
28:04Wait, do we think they'll win more wins than the Celtics?
28:07Win more wins?
28:08What kind of garbage is that?
28:10I am inclined to give the Celtics the East advantage there.
28:14I think that the Celtics are just better than their competition in the Eastern Conference
28:18for the most part.
28:19I do think that OKC is going to have the second-best record in the league, and I think they're
28:23going to be a bit to play every night.
28:26Their roster depth is astonishing.
28:29Justin, will the Thunder have more wins than the Celtics, or no?
28:33The Thunder will have less wins than the Celtics by, like, two or three, and considering it's
28:39the Western Conference, that's pretty impressive.
28:41I do think that the Knicks have a path to get to the second-most as well, but I'm going
28:48to go with the Thunder for the second-most as well.
28:50All right.
28:51OK, Alex, you have the first pick of the second round.
28:53Take it away.
28:54So there's a bunch of different ways that we could go here.
28:57Obviously, you know, in the Eastern Conference, there's a couple of heavy hitters.
29:00Philadelphia is going to be very good, I think, if Embiid stays healthy.
29:05The problem is that he will probably miss 20 games.
29:08I really like the Orlando Magic this year.
29:11I think I like the Bucs potentially more than the current commentariat does, but I am still
29:16sticking in the Western Conference for my second pick.
29:20And I'm going to take somebody that, a team that might surprise some people, given kind
29:25of what the offseason trend has been about.
29:27I'm going with the Denver Nuggets at four, and my rationale is pretty simple.
29:33Jokic churns out 50 wins basically every year.
29:36It's a safe pick, but that guy just does nothing more than win basketball games.
29:42I think that there are other teams in the Western Conference that, in my opinion, got
29:48worse this offseason, looking at you, Minnesota Timberwolves.
29:54And I think that that will potentially soften the blow of Denver losing some depth pieces.
30:00I actually do not hate Russell Westbrook as a bench guard for this team.
30:04I think that their bench last year was severely lacking for any sort of playmaking or any
30:11sort of rim pressure whatsoever.
30:13I think to some degree Westbrook will alleviate that.
30:15Obviously, he's going to have his bad shots, he's going to have his bad decisions.
30:19He's not a good defender anymore.
30:21I do think he has a role on this team.
30:22And again, the thing that I just come back to is that if you have Jokic and any healthy
30:27players around him, you're going to win 50 games pretty much like clockwork.
30:32It's a safe pick, but I think it's the right pick.
30:34Well, yeah, I think Westbrook's one of my favorite players.
30:39I would never want him to play in the playoffs for a team I root for.
30:43But as a regular season dog, I mean, he just tries harder than everyone else.
30:49I'm going to also maybe think outside the box.
30:52I'm going to go back to the East because I stand by just you're going to beat up on Detroit
30:56and Brooklyn in April so easy.
31:00I'm low on some of the teams that might go further in the postseason.
31:05I'm going to give a tip of my hat to a team that played harder and faster than most other
31:09teams most of the year.
31:10And I'm going to take the Pacers for my second pick.
31:15So that means Boston's off the board, New York's off the board, OKC's off the board,
31:19Denver's off the board, Indy's off the board with the sixth pick.
31:24And then you get the seventh pick, Justin, who are you taking in your wins pool?
31:27What is your sixth pick, your second pick on your team?
31:29I'm going to pick two teams that I am not super confident are going to do particularly
31:34well in the postseason because of health.
31:37Just because I've never really seen either of these players really manage their health
31:42the way they say, at least one of them, indeed, this season that he's going to.
31:49I'm going to pick the 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks, both in the East, because, again, weaker
31:54conference.
31:55I don't think these are not the teams I would pick, again, to go past the second round very
32:00likely in the East, you know, Boston being one of the barriers to that, obviously.
32:07But I do think that both of them are going to, as they tend to do, rank up close to or
32:11about 50 wins, maybe even a little bit more in Philly's case in the regular season.
32:15I just don't have too much faith in them in the postseason, which is not the point of
32:18this exercise.
32:19All righty.
32:21So Justin ends the second round by taking Philly and opens the third round with taking
32:25Milwaukee or vice versa.
32:26It doesn't really matter.
32:27We have an interesting trend.
32:30There's already five teams from the East taken and only two from the West.
32:33I'm up with my pick in the third round.
32:37Now I'm dripping with sirens in the background.
32:44It's honestly, it's fitting because I'm going to pick a team that it seems like it's a real
32:48party when they play and there's a lot of noise and craziness.
32:53I'm going to bet high on the Memphis Grizzlies rebounding and rebounding in a big way.
32:59I'm going to take Memphis.
33:02Honestly, I don't love that pick because it's such an obvious, well, it couldn't be as bad
33:07as last year, but that doesn't mean they're going to be as good as the year before.
33:11I'm riding really high on a lot of nostalgia and hope and broken forward trajectory, but
33:20like Indiana, they're just gonna play harder and faster than most teams, most nights, and
33:24especially in the spring when teams start to tank like mad, they're just going to punch
33:28people in the jaw.
33:29So no pun intended as it were, uh, Alex, so you got the third pick of the third round
33:35and the first pick of the fourth round.
33:38Take it away.
33:39Well, speaking of teams that are going to be playing harder and faster than most teams
33:42on most nights, my next pick is going to be a team that I'm extremely high on heading
33:47into the season.
33:48It's the Orlando magic who I think are, are going to be a nightmare to play on so many
33:55of these awful regular season Wednesday back to back type games.
33:59They're so fast, they're young, they have so much defense guys.
34:04I think a lot of these games are going to be ugly.
34:07I think you're going to be looking at a lot of 89 to 85 type games, but the magic windows
34:13games and I think they're going to win potentially a very surprising and high amount.
34:18Now obviously, you know, Franz Wagner's shot falls off cliff again, that's not going to
34:23help.
34:24I still have questions about their offensive playmaking, but that team's going to suck
34:28to play every night.
34:30And so I'm taking the magic for you get to open the fourth round.
34:34I won't recap everyone, but just so people know where we're in Boston's off the board
34:39and then New York.
34:40Okay.
34:41See Philly, Indiana, Denver, Milwaukee, Memphis, Orlando said this is the 10th pick and the
34:46first pick and the fourth round.
34:47It's Alex's Mr. Goldberg.
34:50You know, well, so thinking about teams that are going to be trying pretty hard teams that
34:55are, you know, really trying to, you know, go after a high level of winning and teams
35:01that really need the regular season to go well for them in order to achieve those goals.
35:08To me, the next pick is pretty clearly the Dallas Mavericks.
35:13To me, it feels like Dallas, if anything, I think I would hope learn their lesson that
35:19being a five seat and trying to tear your way through the playoffs is really, really,
35:23really hard.
35:24I am.
35:25I would imagine that they are going to be going for higher seating this year.
35:29You're going to have a more settled roster.
35:30They have PJ Washington, you know, now with a full training camp, the clay Thompson fit.
35:36I have some questions about, but I think there's going to be a lot of nights where this team
35:40puts up 130, 135 points.
35:44And there's just a barrage of shooting and playmaking from Luca and Kyrie and clay.
35:49I think Dallas is pretty serious about trying to get back to the finals.
35:55And I think they're the right pick here.
35:58So I have the next pick, and I have a problem.
36:01The Cleveland Cavaliers are still on the board.
36:05And that's the last good team in the East, because then you're looking at Miami, Atlanta,
36:09Charlotte, Chicago, which one of those teams will bubble up, but I don't feel great about
36:14that.
36:15So part of me wants to just take Cleveland.
36:16That's good, solid playoff team that intends to win games.
36:19But we still haven't taken Minnesota, which I think people will remember was pretty good
36:24last year.
36:25They did make this massive trade, but they have an Edwards.
36:28I don't know off the top of my head who won more games last year.
36:32So I actually really don't know where to take this.
36:37I'm pretty sure it's Minnesota.
36:38They were second in the West, I think.
36:41Yeah, that sounds probably right.
36:44The question you have to ask him is whether the Cavs are going to be there after you make
36:48this pick.
36:49If they're not.
36:50I already know who I'm picking next round.
36:52It's sick.
36:53I'm going to take the Timberwolves.
36:56I'm betting on Ant Edwards.
37:00This is like Memphis.
37:01This would go so south.
37:02If the ownership thing goes sideways, and Ant is out six weeks, this could be a bad
37:08pick in a hurry.
37:09But the sunny side of the street for Minnesota still looks pretty good.
37:11So I'll take Minnesota.
37:13Justin, that means you have the last pick in the fourth round and the first pick of
37:17the fifth round.
37:18So you get to go back to back here.
37:19Ooh, buddy.
37:20Well, I think I am going to take the team you did not take.
37:24I probably would have taken that out of the two anyway, just because I'm a little less
37:28confident that two players who really need the ball in Ant and Julius Randall are going
37:34to mesh as well as they should early on.
37:37I wouldn't be surprised if they figure it out, particularly if it clicks in Randall's
37:40head that he's got to learn to play with a team that he's on if he really wants to
37:43be successful in this league, like on the level I think he wants to be.
37:46I'm not saying he's not a good player, but to be a championship player, he's got to bend
37:50his game a bit.
37:52So for that, I think I'm going to take the Cavs, just because, as you said, they're probably
37:55the last good team in the East.
37:57I still can't count out the Heat.
38:00We'll see what happens over the course of the season.
38:02Zombie Heat, new Heat culture, blah, blah, blah, blah.
38:05But I think for me, it's going to be Cleveland for sure.
38:09As far as the next round, I'm going to go out on a limb and try the Sacramento Kings
38:15in the West.
38:16Cool.
38:17Say more.
38:18They seem like a good team.
38:21They have some questions around how well they're going to mesh this upcoming season.
38:29But for me, they're always a good team in the last couple of seasons.
38:33Maybe not a great team.
38:35Maybe the West is a little too hard for them to really expect to be a playoff team this
38:39season.
38:40But I do think that they're probably the last good, good team, unless you believe in the
38:46Warriors, which I have lots of questions about.
38:50I'm so excited about my next pick because I feel really good about it.
38:54This team has a coach who is an offensive genius.
38:58He stinks in the postseason, like Russell Westbrook.
39:00I wouldn't want him to coach my team in the postseason, but I'd be happy to have him in
39:03the regular season.
39:05Kevin Durant and Devin Booker spent the summer around winners and reminding themselves that
39:10they're pretty damn good at basketball.
39:12And even without Bradley Beal, who, let's just pencil him in for an injury.
39:16Those are two of the best players in the world.
39:18We're reminded of that this summer.
39:20And this is another one that could go so sideways so quickly.
39:22But if you are feeling good about the Phoenix Suns, they're still a pretty damn good team.
39:29I also really like some of their depth.
39:32Again, I'm not saying this team is going to win multiple playoff rounds, but I think they're
39:36going to be more competitive on any given night and have every reason to win as many
39:41games as possible.
39:42So give me the Phoenix Suns for my pick in round five.
39:48Alex.
39:49Alex Adelman Pretty clearly the best team remaining, it's a good pick.
39:54Now we start to get a little messy.
39:57So let me talk to people.
40:00So Golden State's still on the board, Miami's still on the board, both L.A. teams are still
40:05on the board, and then the usual suspects of who wants that is still on the board.
40:11All right, so I'm going back to the East on the premise that there's a lot of bad teams
40:18in the East and that the middle class of the East will stop up some easy wins against your
40:23Detroit's, Brooklyn's, etc.
40:29This is an upside pick.
40:31It's betting on the vibes being a little different from last year.
40:35It's betting on another year of a coach being able to kind of implement their system.
40:40And it's betting on their temperamental superstar having a little bit more of a success this
40:46year with the ball now placed firmly in his hands and no one else's.
40:51I can't believe I'm saying it, give me the Atlanta Hawks.
40:55Why not?
40:57We're not picking postseason winners, we're picking regular season winners.
41:00We're not.
41:01And I think, listen, guys, Trae Young, a lot of flaws to his game, a lot of challenges
41:07for him as a postseason player, still puts the ball in the basket over and over and over
41:13again.
41:14He's going to suck to play in the regular season.
41:16I think the Hawks roster makes a little bit more sense.
41:19It's not as talented without DeJounte Murray, but I think it might make a little more sense
41:25in terms of the hierarchy.
41:28Quinn Snyder, I feel like, is a guy who's consistently shown that he can get a good
41:33season out of rosters that are maybe not as well built as they would like.
41:38It's a big upside play.
41:39It could blow up massively in my face, Trae Young could be getting dealt in February.
41:44But for now, I will take the Atlanta Hawks and see where that gets me.
41:48And so now we're in a very interesting place where we have some young teams that are on
41:53the rise, but might be a little early.
41:56We have some old teams that are trending down, but might still have a little bit of fight
42:01left in them.
42:02And we have some really bad teams below all of them.
42:05Oh, yeah.
42:06Yes, we do.
42:09I think I'm going to bet on infrastructure.
42:14So the Hawks are my risky pick.
42:16For this pick, I'm going to bet on infrastructure, I'm going to bet on stability, I'm going to
42:20bet on just being an absolute bear to play on a night-to-night basis.
42:28My most hated team, the team that lights nothing but fire under me and fills me with rage,
42:35the Devil Magic Miami Heat are going to just churn out more wins because that's what they
42:40do.
42:41Ben Adebayo still hasn't won his defensive player of the year, I think he's going to
42:44be trying very hard.
42:45Tyler Hero needs a little bit of a redemption season after last year.
42:49Jimmy Butler, who knows what's happening there.
42:53But I do know when Jimmy Butler is playing, he's very good.
42:56And Spolstra is as well.
42:59I will take Hawks Heat, both East playing guys for my next two picks.
43:05Fantastic.
43:06Alrighty.
43:07Um, yeah, I have the East, the bottom of the East is sitting there.
43:15I have some thoughts.
43:16No one's taken Golden State yet, that feels spicy, but also maybe obvious, like maybe
43:22there's a reason none of us want that.
43:23New Orleans feels like they're not even playing, Brandon Ingram, let's see, he's getting a
43:27coach's DNP in the preseason here, like that feels like a bad situation.
43:32The Lakers aren't good.
43:37I'm going to take the Toronto Raptors.
43:39I think that's a team with talent.
43:44I think that's a team with talent under the radar, going to be going to be better than
43:49the bad teams in the East.
43:50So a lot of free wins there.
43:54Last year, it's like just sometimes you have years where like the chemistry doesn't work
43:56and you're a little snake bitten and it's just like a forgotten season.
43:59And I think they had that last year and the year before that was kind of a transition.
44:03And I just think that Toronto has a lot of talent and in the regular season that matters
44:09perhaps more than high level talent or ambition.
44:12So I'm taking the Raptors with my pick in the sixth round, Dr. Quinn, you get the last
44:18pick in the sixth round, and then to open the seventh round, let's go a little faster.
44:22Agreed.
44:23In the interest of that idea, I think it really comes down to the Warriors and trusting and
44:31trying to squeeze these two timelines back together again, which as we have all learned
44:35as Celtics fans, two timelines, don't do it, not a good idea.
44:40You can't give either one the attention it needs.
44:43That said, the Pelicans, I think are probably the only other team conceivably likely to
44:48make the postseason without going through the play-in tournament.
44:52I don't think they're going to, they could.
44:54So I'm going to pick the Pelicans.
44:57All right.
44:58And for posterity, that's your pick to end the sixth round.
45:01What is your pick to open the seventh round?
45:04Well, considering I had it down to those two, I'll take the Warriors.
45:08Sure.
45:09Those are good picks.
45:12It seems unlikely that both of those are bad picks.
45:18I really don't like the Houston Rockets emotionally, but intellectually, I'm a little curious.
45:23God, for the Clippers' sake, I hope they're good.
45:30I want to take Chicago.
45:31Isn't that stupid?
45:32That's so stupid, right?
45:33You can take Chicago, buddy.
45:34I'm going to take the Lakers.
45:45I told Justin earlier today, I'm going off feel.
45:47I feel like they really need to win some games, so I'll take the Lakers there.
45:52Alex, you get your pick in the seventh round and your pick in the eighth round.
45:56All right.
45:57It's dart throat time, folks.
45:59We're getting silly.
46:00We're going for upside.
46:01We're trying crazy stuff.
46:04Give me the alien.
46:05Give me the San Antonio Spurs.
46:07Damn it.
46:08Damn it.
46:09Damn it.
46:10Yeah.
46:11Victor Wembenyama may be a top 15 player already.
46:14The defensive player of the year, Hype Train, is leaving the station.
46:17Chris Paul is probably only going to play about 50 games, if that, but I'm just betting
46:23on the alien taking a massive jump into his next year and the Spurs being in that play-in
46:29zone.
46:30Yeah.
46:31The bottom of the East is, that's so bad.
46:39Jeez.
46:40So I'm torn between two teams, both young, both with aspirations to be in the play-in
46:47zone, both with lots of questions about their guards, about who exactly is going to get
46:55stops, et cetera, et cetera.
46:59I suppose I will take the Houston Rockets here, thinking being just that maybe there's
47:05a world where Jalen Green puts it together for a full season, where the hype that they
47:10got from last year's cupcake schedule towards the end carries over.
47:14Yeah.
47:15We'll take the Spurs and the Rockets with the picks.
47:20So Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Washington, Brooklyn, Clippers, Utah, Portland.
47:26That's what's left.
47:28So we're really intellectualizing some real duty here.
47:36Who's more pathetically trying to win, Chicago or LA?
47:39I'm going to go for the Clippers.
47:41No, they have no...
47:43I'm going for Chicago, damn it.
47:45Let's go.
47:46Go Bull.
47:47Chicago it is.
47:48Let's go.
47:49Okay.
47:50Justin, you're up.
47:51Well, I think here it comes down to, do we believe in Kawhi?
47:56I don't.
47:57Or do we believe in Charles Lee?
48:00I do.
48:01So I think I'll go with the Charlotte Hawks.
48:02Beautiful.
48:03And for your next pick, you're going to take the Clippers, because now you open the ninth
48:06round.
48:07Okay.
48:08They were a playoff game.
48:12Who else is there?
48:13I'll tell you who's there.
48:14The Detroit Pistons.
48:15They're sick of losing.
48:16They kind of looked good in the spring there.
48:17Shout out to Detroit's own Ty Carlin.
48:18I'll take the...
48:19Oh, man.
48:20What?
48:21What was I going to take?
48:22The Wizards?
48:23I mean, I don't know.
48:24All right.
48:25Show us how it's done.
48:26You have two more picks.
48:29I do have two more picks.
48:32This is it, huh?
48:34Okay.
48:36So I will take the team of this remaining squads with the best coach and with the best
48:42player in the lottery, Markanen.
48:44Utah Jazz.
48:45Why not?
48:46You know, I mean, maybe Markanen pops.
48:49Maybe some of their young guys get a little better.
48:52Phil Hardy's good at grinding wins out of bad teams.
48:55So we'll take the Jazz.
48:58And oh, boy, things are quite grim.
49:00Who do we have left here?
49:02Washington, Brooklyn, and Portland.
49:03Oh, man.
49:04It's a preview of the lottery, if I had to guess.
49:07That is going to be really tough.
49:11I guess I will take the Wizards.
49:14I think Jordan Kuhl and Kyle Kuzma and Jonas Valanciunas and Malcolm Brogdon will all be
49:20looking to pump up their trade value a little bit before the deadline.
49:24So they'll sneak out some stupid wins between the beginning of the season and February.
49:30I have no hope for the remaining teams.
49:33I'll take Brooklyn.
49:35Brooklyn has some real players.
49:36I think they're going to have to trade a few of them away for them to really tank the way
49:40they want to.
49:41Net neutral.
49:42It's a bad team with some solid players, and that's a good way to win on a back-to-back
49:46in January.
49:48So they might have a closer to 500 record until the front office tears that thing down
49:55to the studs.
49:56So I'll happily take the Nets, which means, Justin, you take the Portland Donovan Clingons.
50:01I mean, yeah.
50:05So good for you.
50:06So I'll recap our teams.
50:09We'll post it online so you don't have to write all this down, listener.
50:12But check back in if you're so inclined throughout the season, and certainly in the spring when
50:17we add these up.
50:18We're still looking for a prize.
50:23But Justin, these are your 10 teams.
50:25Hopefully their collective wins wins you that undisclosed prize.
50:30You have Boston, Philly, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Sacramento, New Orleans, Golden State, Chicago,
50:36the Los Angeles Clippers, and Portland.
50:39Cameron, I either did a really good job or a really bad job.
50:44We'll see.
50:45We got New York, Indiana, Memphis, Minnesota, Phoenix, Toronto, the Lakers, Chicago, Detroit,
50:53and Brooklyn.
50:54And Alex, we got OKC, Denver, Orlando, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, San Antonio, Houston, Utah,
51:01and Washington.
51:03So whoever has the team with the most wins, wins the wins tournament.
51:11This episode of the Boston Six Flags podcast, my team is so bad, guys.
51:16Yeah, your team is bad.
51:17You were talking big time before we recorded this, and I think you have clearly the worst
51:22buddy.
51:23I'm sorry to say it.
51:24So he's going to win, of course, because that's how the NBA is.
51:28Which, yeah, of course, I am going to win.
51:30Thank you for that.

51:54It's really good.
51:55Justin does a lot of quick writing.
51:59This is thoughtful writing.
52:00It's good to read Justin's thoughtful writing.
52:02I don't get to do that very often.
52:04It was definitely nice to step out of the building the typical articles you don't read
52:12for more than 30 seconds.
52:15They're just designed that way.
52:17Anyways, Alex plays in a band called Divine Sweater.
52:19They're on tour.
