00:00President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. bewailed the helplessness and efforts the Philippine government exerted over the last five to six years
00:08to save a Filipino migrant worker who unintentionally took the life of a Saudi Arab over money matters.
00:15Our Kenneth Pachenta tells us more on the Philippine government to repatriate and afford full benefits to the family of the executed OFW moving forward.
00:26President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. expressed sadness over the fate of a Filipino in Saudi Arabia who was sentenced to death after killing a Saudi national.
00:36According to the President, despite the government's best efforts to save the Filipino's life, the family of the Saudi national refused to accept the offers from the Philippine government, including the blood money.
00:47We had very few options left. We tried everything and for many, many years.
00:52And the Saudi government really tried to look and to be sure that the judgment of hanging was actually deserved.
01:10Nonetheless, we appealed to the better natures against of our friends in Saudi Arabia to perhaps have another look and they did.
01:24And unfortunately, the law there is very strict and apparently the conviction has stood and one of ours has been taken away.
01:39But yes, very unfortunate.
01:43The president also shared that the government has been addressing this issue for several years and there has been uninterrupted coordination between the Philippine government and the Saudi authorities.
01:52It's been going on for how many years?
01:54It's around five, six years.
01:57I remember five, six years ago. I came upon it when I came into office and they told me it's an old gun.
02:05And as I said, I guess Saudi tried to exhaust all possibilities. So did we. But to no avail.
02:15The chief executive extended his condolences to the family of the Filipino who requested their identities remain undisclosed.
02:22He also assured that the government will provide all the needs of the family.
02:25We'll see what they need. We'll see what they need. But for someone who dies abroad, we have many procedures for that, to bring them back home. So I don't think that will be a problem.
02:40Meanwhile, the Department of Migrant Workers is coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs for the repatriation of the Filipinos' remains.
02:47They are also providing assistance to the family.
02:50We're working closely with the DFA on that matter. And we're assuring that we're assisting the family. The DMW has visited the family and assured them of our support and assistance.
03:07The Philippine was sentenced to death after killing a Saudi national allegedly over a money-related dispute.
03:13Kenneth Paciente, from the National TV Network, for a new and better Philippine.
