00:05families but also brings pride and improves relations with the nations they are working
00:09with.
00:10While in the case of more than a hundred overseas Filipino workers or OFWs who are facing minor
00:15charges in the United Arab Emirates or UAE, the president has very good news for their
00:21families.
00:22The details of these positive developments, Kenneth Paschenta reveals in this report.
00:28One hundred and forty-three Filipinos were granted pardon in the United Arab Emirates.
00:33This was confirmed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., following his conversation
00:38with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed in a phone call.
00:42The president thanked the Emirati government following this action, stating that it will
00:46provide great relief to the families of the said Filipinos.
00:49The president did not provide additional details regarding the granted pardon.
00:53But according to Foreign Affairs Department Undersecretary Eduardo Teveca, the pardon
00:57was granted during the celebration of Idil Adha last June.
01:01The Philippines was formally notified only this August, something the government welcomed.
01:06Teveca also added, these were not grave or heinous offenses, such as death penalty cases
01:11but only minor offenses.
01:13Some senators expressed delight on hearing this feel-good piece of news.
01:17According to Senator Jingoy Estrada, this move provides relief to the anxieties of the
01:21Filipinos who were pardoned and further strengthens the ties and friendship between the two countries.
01:27He also said this is an early Christmas gift for the 143 Filipinos and their families.
01:32Senator Joel Villanueva, as the principal author and sponsor of the Department of Migrant
01:36Workers Act, said he pushed for better legal support for our fellow Filipinos abroad facing
01:41cases.
01:42But he also added there is a need to expand the system for the use of the Legal Assistance
01:46Fund.
01:47The president also thanked the UAE for its assistance to the country, especially during
01:51times of calamity.
01:53He particularly recognized the humanitarian work done by the UAE for those affected by
01:57recent typhoons and floods.
01:59The two leaders also discussed the condition of Filipinos in the UAE, who continue to make
02:03significant contributions.
02:05The president also said the partnership between the two countries continues to strengthen
02:10for their mutual benefit.
02:11Meanwhile, the Philippines and Malaysia have strengthened cooperation and partnership,
02:15especially in the education and disaster response sectors.
02:19after a meeting between the president and Malaysia Deputy Prime Minister and Minister
02:23for Rural and Regional Development Dr. Ahmad Zahid Bin Hamidi during a courtesy call in
02:29Malacanang.
02:30In the meeting, the president showcased the country's competent workforce, describing
02:34them as hardworking and skilled.
02:36However, he also noted there's still a need for them to undergo training to acquire new
02:40knowledge to keep up with modern times.
02:43He also emphasized the focus in upskilling Filipinos abroad through the adoption of a
02:47skills training system.
02:49The Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister expressed desire to learn from the Philippines, especially
02:53in technical and vocational education and training, or TIVET.
02:57He also mentioned the willingness to send Malaysia's special group, the SMART Team,
03:01to the Philippines to assist during typhoons and calamities.
03:04The president gladly accepted this offer.
03:07Malaysia is the Philippines' ninth-largest trading partner, with the country earning
03:11US$8.15 billion from trading with her.
