00:00And in this occasion, we will talk about the first professional pool league in the Philippines
00:07that is far-reaching and will raise the billiards in the country, the Sharks Billiards Association.
00:13This brings a new opportunity for players from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
00:20And to give us more details about this, we will meet the founder of Naturang Liga, Mr. Handy Mariano.
00:27Good morning, and welcome to Rise and Shine, Pilipinas.
00:29Good morning.
00:30Good morning.
00:31Good morning.
00:32Alright, Mr. Handy, as the founder of the first pool league, billiards, here in the Philippines,
00:39what is your motivation, what inspired you to form this organization?
00:45I used to be a player when I was young.
00:50Back then, the image of billiards was of gambling, alcohol, and bars.
00:57I didn't see a clear career path in billiards.
01:02In short, there was no future.
01:06It's sad to say, but that's the truth.
01:09Actually, even in schools, when you play billiards, it's like you're given a major offense right away.
01:14Yes, because some people cut classes to play billiards.
01:18If you think about it, basketball players do the same thing.
01:23They cut classes because they have to practice or play a game.
01:27The only thing about billiards is that it's not sanctioned by the school.
01:31Athletes who play billiards go to school and play outside.
01:36So maybe if the school has a program of billiards or varsity billiards,
01:43the kids don't have to cut classes.
01:46Let's break the stigma.
01:49Let's go to the Indian Sharks Billiards Association.
01:53What's the format and how does it enhance the experience of both the players and the fans?
02:00We started four years ago.
02:04We did the regular stuff like tournaments, exhibition games for the players.
02:12I observed why billiards players, even though we already have a tournament,
02:17they still gamble outside.
02:20They still play money games.
02:22So I studied other sports like basketball, soccer.
02:27They have leagues.
02:29Players get a salary and they have contracts.
02:32So I thought, why don't we make a league in billiards with teams?
02:36Because there are a lot of players here in the Philippines, unlike in other countries.
02:40The format is actually a season-long tournament or a season-long league.
02:47In this case, in our first season, we have four teams.
02:50And then three months, they will play.
02:52All over the Philippines?
02:54Four teams are Quezon City, Manila, Taguig, and Negros Occidental.
03:00But for the second season next year, we're hoping to get an additional two more teams.
03:06So I want to expand slowly but surely.
03:09Yes.
03:10This is a good opportunity to give attention to the talent of Filipinos all over the Philippines.
03:19So in your opinion, how can this league help in its impact in sports,
03:26and even in our countrymen,
03:28those who we just nourish to be an athlete?
03:36As I said earlier, when I was young, I didn't have a clear career path.
03:40So I hope that one day, billiards will be like basketball.
03:44When I was young, I saw Michael Jordan in basketball.
03:48I knew how to play varsity and then play PBA or NBA.
03:54In billiards, I hope it will be like that too.
03:56When it comes to billiards, Sir Efren Bata-Reyes, right?
04:02Yes, the one and only.
04:03So there's no one to follow, right?
04:05Actually, there are those who will follow,
04:07but since the stigma of gambling is still there,
04:11we can't really break through in mainstream sports.
04:16And also, there needs to be support,
04:18not only from an organization, but also from government agencies,
04:22our private partners,
04:24to help and support our athlete players when it comes to billiards.
04:29Okay, how is the support here from PSC?
04:33Actually, we're under GAB since it is a professional league.
04:37Yesterday, I was just there at GAB.
04:39They're helping me find new team owners.
04:42Okay, GAB is?
04:43Games and Amusement Board.
04:45Oh, okay.
04:46So they regulate professional sports.
04:49Oh, on that part.
04:50Well, we want to know how your association is doing
04:53when it comes to the trainings and the support to our players.
04:58Maybe the future players who want to join this.
05:02The training is handled by the team owners.
05:04Like in basketball, the teams have a training session.
05:08It's similar to billiards.
05:10So that's how it is.
05:11We are trying to put an existing system that already works with another sport,
05:19just putting it in billiards.
05:22All right.
05:23Hadley, I'm curious.
05:24What is your vision or association here
05:28so that this sport can be promoted here in the Philippines
05:31even in the international scene?
05:34The Filipino billiard players,
05:37we're world beaters in the sport.
05:39Meaning, the best in the Philippines can beat the best in the world.
05:44We can be the best right now.
05:46It's just that our country can't do it.
05:49So the vision for SBA is to be the NBA of billiards.
05:54One day, foreign players will see Filipinos playing here.
06:00They want to join because they can see the competition.
06:04You're playing billiards?
06:05I tried when I was in college.
06:07College?
06:08I was the one who cut.
06:09But I enjoyed it.
06:11I enjoyed the billiards.
06:13I like it when there's a pool ball and you put it like...
06:15What do you call that?
06:16Cue stick.
06:17Cue stick.
06:18There's a cue stick.
06:19And there's also a blue shot.
06:21I thought you were very professional.
06:24And your eyes are really...
06:26You don't know what you're doing with your hands.
06:28But when you shoot, you shoot it.
06:31Speaking of which,
06:32what if you have zero knowledge but you're very interested?
06:37Do you have training for beginners?
06:41Right now, we're already planning an amateur league.
06:44So with the amateur league,
06:46of course, there are classes A, B, C, D.
06:48So there are more opportunities for our countrymen?
06:50There are more.
06:52Okay, let's go to your game.
06:54When and where will it be held?
06:55And where will the players come from?
06:58By October 14, we will start Monday to Friday.
07:038 p.m. onwards at 234 Sharks Arena and Sports Bar
07:08along Tomas Moroto, Quezon City.
07:10It's a free entrance.
07:11So anyone who's interested can come.
07:14Maybe you'll go there.
07:16Of course.
07:17I'll teach you how to play.
07:19I'll go there because you're there, my friend.
07:23Yes, let's try something new.
07:25Maybe this is our hidden talent.
07:29Another way of breaking the stigma is
07:31not only boys can play that but even girls.
07:33Of course.
07:34So you can join us there.
07:36Of course.
07:38But of course,
07:39maybe we should instill in our minds,
07:45how can we raise the industry of billiards
07:51in the minds of Filipinos?
07:53I think the best way for us to do that
07:56is to actually have a collegiate league someday.
07:59Okay.
08:00Think of the players of the SBA,
08:03the graduates of Lasal, Ateneo, UP.
08:07So by doing that,
08:08the kids on the streets who play,
08:11who have talent,
08:13they can go to schools and become scholars.
08:15Okay.
08:16So I think this is the best way to uplift the sport.
08:21Is this tournament different from the usual billiards
08:25or the same format?
08:27Yes, it's actually different
08:29in the sense that it is a season
08:31because most tournaments are only 7 days.
08:34This one is longer.
08:36How long is it?
08:37It's 3 months.
08:393 months.
08:40Is it the same players or different?
08:424 teams.
08:434 teams.
08:44We have 5 players per team.
08:46Okay.
08:47We play it on a team basis.
08:49So there's 5 on 5,
08:502 on 2,
08:51and 1 on 1.
08:52So is this the type of billiards
08:54where you shouldn't hit the 8
08:56and there are stripes?
08:58You're talking about 8 ball.
09:00Our format is 9 balls.
09:029 balls.
09:03That's a lot.
09:04It's harder.
09:05How do you do 9 balls?
09:079 balls is less.
09:098 balls is 15 balls.
09:11There are stripes.
09:12You hit the stripes first before the 8.
09:14For 9 balls,
09:15you have to shoot it in order.
09:171, 2, 3, up to 9.
09:19So the last ball is 9.
09:20We need to go to the tournament
09:22so we can try it.
09:23There's 8 ball and 9 ball.
09:25Yes.
09:26What I'll do is I'll add the ball.
09:29That's a different game.
09:32On that note,
09:33thank you very much
09:34for being a part of our program.
09:36We learned a lot
09:38and shared important details
09:40about the Sharks Billiards Association.
09:43Mr. Hadley Mariana Molin,
09:45thank you very much.
