‘Julian’ intensifies into super typhoon as it slowly moves away from the Philippines

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said “Julian” (international name “Krathon”) became a super typhoon while moving slowly away from the country on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the super typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 230 kph.

Based on the latest update, the center of Julian was located 205 kilometers west of Itbayat, Batanes.

The highest tropical cyclone wind warning currently in effect due to Julian is Signal No. 2. PAGASA is no longer expecting to raise Signal No. 5.
