00:00The 79th United Nations General Assembly opens in New York amid global crisis, wars and criticisms
00:08of the United Nations crisis.
00:13The Venezuelan Prosecutor's Office requested Interpol to activate a red alert against the
00:17President of Argentina, Javier Milet.
00:23And Hurricane John dissipated over Mexico on Tuesday after barreling into the country's
00:27southern Pacific coast overnight, leaving two dead and a trail of destruction in its
00:32path.
00:38Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:42We begin with the news.
00:58On Tuesday, September 24th, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly started,
01:06where leaders will debate on the role played by the United Nations and its member states
01:11in the face of current global challenges.
01:13Held at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, in the United States, hundreds
01:18of world heads are meeting until Monday, September 30th, to present their perspectives on global
01:23conflicts and issues related to the global climate crisis, health emergencies, among
01:28others.
01:29Member states will further share their views to advance peace, sustainable development
01:33and human dignity for present and future generations.
01:49And as the United Nations General Assembly is underway, we welcome a special envoy, Jorge
01:55Nestorso, to bring us more details and analysis for the first day of the general debate.
02:01Let's listen.
02:07In this very first day of the debate here at the UN, the most relevant comments in the
02:13morning has been from the first orator, we're talking about Lula da Silva, the president
02:20of Brazil, that he was saying that it's a shame and inexplicable and intolerable the
02:27fact that after so many years at the United Nations, there is none member of Latin America
02:34or Africa in the Security Council.
02:37And he says that definitely, that is the confirmation, there are still some remnants
02:42of colonialism.
02:44On the other hand, almost at the end of the morning was a turn for the president of Turkey,
02:51we're talking President Erdogan, he was extremely tough regarding Israel.
02:56He said that definitely there is a genocide going on between the armed forces of Israel
03:04in Gaza.
03:05He said that is the largest cemetery of the world, Gaza, because of that genocide of Israel
03:13and compared Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with Hitler and say that the humanity should
03:20stop this kind of atrocities implemented by the president and the Prime Minister Netanyahu.
03:31In the afternoon, we are seeing that in the schedule to be talked from Latin America,
03:37we see Argentina, we see El Salvador, it's going to be Chile, it's going to be Paraguay.
03:44And definitely, there are a lot of challenges, the word, the subject that is recurrent along
03:52the morning and also in this afternoon is the Middle East, Gaza, talking about the genocide,
04:01almost 45,000 Palestinians being killed by that almost a year of attacks of Israel.
04:08So this is so far the key issue that is the concern of the world.
04:15The permanent killing of Palestinians around the world, seen by around the world these
04:22different leaders and asking for peace and asking for the end of that war.
04:28We get back to you now.
04:32Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic sentenced that the situation in the world today seemed
04:37more difficult and darker than a year and cited the words of former U.S. President John
04:42F. Kennedy when he said that mankind must put an end to war or war would put an end to mankind.
04:50When we talk about the current moment this year again, to my immense regret, I have to
04:55state that the situation in the world seems even more difficult and dark than a year ago.
05:01The tensions are growing and challenges are becoming more numerous and complex.
05:06What worries me the most is that despite our declaratory efforts for peace, development
05:11and prosperity of humanity, there is no end in sight to this geopolitical nightmare.
05:18I would not like to see the wise words of the former President John Fitzgerald Kennedy
05:22becoming the words of a prophet.
05:25Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind.
05:30Today, mankind relies more on technology than it relies on mankind.
05:39For his part, the President of Angola, João Lourenço, emphasised that multilateralism
05:44is imperative to safeguard the common interests of all humanity while pointing out his country's
05:50commitment to seek solutions to the conflicts of the African continent.
05:55The imperative of multilateralism must prevail as the only framework truly capable of safeguarding
06:04the common interests of all humanity, within which we must reaffirm our resolute commitment
06:12to diplomacy, inclusive dialogue and the use of peaceful means to resolving conflicts.
06:21It is within this spirit that the Republic of Angola is deeply committed to the process
06:27of seeking solutions to conflicts in Africa, notably the great efforts this moment is focused
06:36on the conflict prevailing in East Democratic Republic of the Congo, without neglecting
06:43those occurring in Sudan and in the Sahel region.
06:49The President of Iran, Massoud Pashinyan, strongly condemned the Israeli genocide in
06:54Palestine and urged the international community to put a definitive ceasefire on the Israeli siege.
07:02It is Israel that has assassinated our scientists, diplomats and even guests on our soil and
07:09supported both covertly and overtly terrorist groups like ISIS.
07:17Iran in contrast has supported popular liberation movements of people that have been victims
07:23of four generations of the crimes and colonialism of the Israeli regime.
07:28We have been siding with the people across the world who have flooded the streets in
07:33outrage against Israeli atrocities.
07:35We condemn Israeli crimes against humanity.
07:39It is imperative that the international community should immediately stop the violence and bring
07:44about a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and bring an end to the desperate barbarism of Israel.
07:52On his keynote address, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan referred to the challenges
07:58of the United Nations member states to face to bring justice to the Palestinian people.
08:04I would like to express here our pleasure to see the representative of our friend and
08:08brother Palestine in his rightful place among the member states as a result of long struggles.
08:15I hope that this historic step will be the final turning point on the road leading to
08:22Palestine's membership to the United Nations.
08:27International justice cannot be left in the will of five privileged member states of the
08:33Security Council.
08:34And the most dramatic example to that is the war, the massacre that has been going on in
08:40Gaza for the last 350 days.
08:43And since October 7, 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the continuous Israeli
08:49attacks.
08:52On his speech, President of Colombia Gustavo Petro prised awareness of looking after the
08:58environment which has been continuously damaged by irresponsible human actions.
09:04In the last year, 11 million hectares of the Amazon jungle have been burned in only actually
09:11one month as a result of global warming and climate change.
09:15Scientists said that if we were to burn the Amazon rainforest, we would reach a point
09:21of no return in climate terms.
09:24Let us fly the flag of life or our people will fill up mass graves.
09:30This was revealed to us by the epidemic.
09:33The time has come for people to act.
09:36Local action needs to be taken.
09:38We need to come together.
09:42Fossil fuel capital cannot continue.
09:47People must stop the rising tide of capital.
09:50The poison thrown into the atmosphere is lethal.
09:55For his part, the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, warned that what Israel is
10:00perpetrated in Gaza is an upheaval and called to uphold the principles of the United Nations
10:06Charter and hold Israel accountable for its crimes in Palestine.
10:11We must end the suffering that Palestinians are being subjected to.
10:19We are called upon to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and to uphold consistently
10:29and in their entirety the fundamental tenets of international law.
10:37International law cannot be applied selectively.
10:42No one state is more equal than any other.

10:55We'll be right back, stay with us.
10:59Welcome back.
11:07The Venezuelan Prosecutor's Office requested Interpol to active a red alert against the
11:12President of Argentina, Javier Milley, for the crimes of thief, dismantling and damage
11:17to national patrimony.
11:19The head of the Public Prosecutor's Office, Tarek William Saab, explained the measure
11:23agreed by a Venezuelan court against Milley and two of his officials is supported by the
11:27provisions of Venezuelan and international legislations.
11:31The Attorney General pointed out that the petition is based on a violation of conventions
11:35against organized crime and in the specific case of Milley's government for the robbery
11:40and dismantling of an Emtrasur airplane.
11:43Venezuela's Attorney General denounced the double standards of Javier Milley because
11:47he is using human rights as a pretext while his government is massacring Argentina's elderly
11:52people.
11:53I would like to highlight as an important announcement today that we have already requested
12:09the red alert instruction against these subjects to Interpol.
12:16I want to show here the request formally made.
12:19We can see it on the screen ok.
12:25Made by this public ministry on September the 23rd 2024.
12:33Based on all the above mentioned, the request has already been sent let's wait to see how
12:41Interpol will act.
12:46The Attorney General also stressed that the accusations of Argentina's government are
12:50part of the continuous attacks of foreign powers against the sovereignty of Venezuela.
12:58Therefore, we consider that this action is framed in the context of the continuous attacks
13:05orchestrated by the United States and other foreign powers and their satellites in the
13:13continent to aggravate, to stain the national sovereignty and to want to replace the Venezuelan
13:18justice.
13:24So tomorrow they could invent anything else on any other subject, imagine where this is
13:28going to end.
13:32In this context, the Attorney General Tarek William Saab also stressed the following.
13:41This action orchestrated by Mali's government is nothing but an obviously intended retaliation
13:46revenge against the Venezuelan state for having decided to act against the perpetrator of
13:55the seizure of the plane of the Venezuelan company Entrasur.
13:58Let us not forget that this is where the action of the public ministry that was agreed by
14:07a competent court and publicly announced by the Supreme Court of Justice originates
14:19and that provoked this totally frenetic and insane last-minute reaction by Mali's government.
14:26In Bolivia, on Tuesday, the Foreign Affairs of the country issued a statement to the international
14:33community regarding the actions adopted by former President Evo Morales during a rally
14:38held on Monday, September 23rd, 2024, in the city of La Paz.
14:43The communiqué states that at the event, former President Evo Morales Ayma has threatened
14:48to interrupt the continuity of the democratic order by giving an ultimatum to the constitutional
14:53president Luis Alberto Arce Catacora to change his cabinet of ministers within 24 hours if
14:59he wants to continue governing.
15:01He continues by informing that the Bolivian government rejects these statements made by
15:06former President Evo Morales, as well as any type of extortion or conditioning against
15:11the will of the people expressed in the ballot box.
15:14The communiqué closes by stressing that the government of the British national state of
15:18Bolivia ratifies its commitment to respect democracy and the peaceful solution of conflicts
15:24in favor of the stability, security and well-being of the Bolivian people.

16:24Welcome back to From the South.
16:27Hurricane John dissipated over Mexico on Tuesday after barreling into the country's
16:31southern Pacific coast overnight, leaving two dead and a trail of destruction in its path.
16:36Now, as a tropical depression, John was 115 km northwest of Acapulco and moving northwest
16:43at 60 km per hour as it doddled along the coastal mountains and continued to weaken.
16:50The storm grew into a Category 3 hurricane in a matter of hours Monday and made landfall
16:56about 130 km east of the resort of Acapulco, near the town of Punta Maldonado, with maximum
17:02sustained winds of 190 km per hour before declining to a tropical storm after moving
17:08inland.
17:09According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, John was downgraded on Tuesday to remnant
17:15with maximum sustained wind speeds of 55 km per hour.
17:24The Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service reported that the Brazilian Amazon registered
17:29the highest levels of pollutant emissions in the last 20 years in September.
17:33During the last three months, the drought season has impacted rainfall and, as a consequence,
17:39the presence of forest fires.
17:41The Copernicus report showed that in the first 19 days of September, 60 million tons of carbon
17:47dioxide were emitted from the fire in the world's largest continuous tropical forest.
17:52The resulting emissions have caused a degradation of air quality in a large part of the continent,
17:58extending from Ecuador to Sao Paulo.
18:07Deforestation has destroyed almost 13% of the vegetation of the world's largest tropical
18:12rainforest, the Amazon.
18:15According to a report by a civil organization committed to the sustainability of the Amazon,
18:21deforestation has affected more than 88 million hectares of land between 1985 and 2023.
18:26The report also highlighted that the loss of forest was concentrated in Brazil, Bolivia,
18:32Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
18:37Experts warned that the destruction of the world's largest vegetation long contributes
18:42to the emission of greenhouse gases, alters the water cycle and affects climate regulation.
18:51Meanwhile, in Argentina, fires continue to rage for the sixth consecutive day in different
19:03parts of the mountain ranges of the province of Córdoba.
19:06According to the National Space Activities Commission, the fires have worsened in the
19:10last hours, with new outbreaks in the area of the Champaqui hill in the Punilla Valley
19:16and in the Cala Muxita Valley.
19:18They also warned about the difficulties that the fire department is facing to contain the
19:23flames due to the strong winds which aggravate the situation.
19:33The situation between Lebanon and Israel worsened every hour.
19:38The axis of resistance Hezbollah hit a military base while Israel continues to kill civilians
19:43in southern Lebanon.
19:45Russia confirmed the airstrike on the Ramad-Nadvali military base at the Lebanese health ministry,
19:51reported six civilian deaths and 35 injured in the Al-Aqibieh town.
19:57Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aghashi assured on Tuesday that his country
20:03won't remain indifferent to the crimes of Zionism.
20:06In addition, China and Russia expressed their deep concern about rising tensions in the
20:11region.
20:12The last Xi Jinping administration requested its nationals to leave Israel immediately,
20:17while the spokesperson of Chinese foreign ministry made the following statements on
20:22the matter.
