Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones joined the K&C Masterpiece to discuss why he believes in the team they've put together despite continued struggles in stopping the run, when he thinks improvements could come with the defense, why the team won't put their chips all in one season and mortgage future seasons, and more.

00:00We bring you Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President Steven Jones.
00:18Good afternoon, sir.
00:21Good afternoon, guys.
00:23Now, obviously the game was wildly different in the fourth quarter as opposed to the first
00:28three.
00:29Do you get the sense that that's going to be the case for most of the season, or do
00:33you see the fourth quarter as, this is the team we can be versus the first three quarters
00:37is maybe where we're at right now?
00:40Well, hopefully, you know, you obviously believe, we believe that our team can play like we
00:46played in the fourth quarter consistently.
00:48That's what we got to get to.
00:49You know, we've been through, you know, a rough patch there for seven quarters and haven't
00:56played well, and especially, you know, the defensive side of the ball, but some of that
01:01comes with a new scheme, a new coordinator.
01:04And obviously we got off to a good start in Cleveland, but we played two really good football
01:08teams that run the ball really well.
01:11And certainly it's something where we've got to continue to improve if we want to be the
01:17team we want to be.
01:19Jerry said last night he likes the personnel of this team.
01:22I'm guessing you do as well.
01:24How long do you usually go into a season before you might revisit that?
01:29I'm sure three games is too soon, but where would you get in the season where you'd be
01:33like, maybe we're off about this?
01:35Oh, I think the biggest thing is obviously people want to point out and they're right
01:40to it, our running game.
01:42But when you get behind, like we've gotten the last two games, you know, it's hard to
01:47really evaluate our running game when you're down two scores, two plus scores, most of
01:53the game.
01:54And, uh, uh, you know, obviously you get into a mode where you're having to hurry up and,
01:59uh, you know, throw the ball and, uh, you don't really get to evaluate, uh, uh, what
02:04you have.
02:05I think we're, we're blocking it up.
02:07Good.
02:08I think when we do run, uh, you know, I think, uh, yesterday, uh, uh, Rico ran for four yards
02:13of carry.
02:14So, you know, we just got to get, get in our team in situations where, you know, we're,
02:19we're not, you know, fighting from behind, uh, like we have been the last two weeks.
02:24Well, on the other side though, the, that part of trying to, you know, not be behind
02:28the defensive front, the personnel there, do you feel, you feel comfortable with, with
02:33the, that, that personnel is at the moment, your defensive tackles and ends?
02:37I think we can get better, uh, obviously, uh, you know, we brought in, uh, two veteran,
02:44uh, three veteran guys now, uh, you know, to try to shore up the inside part, uh, of
02:50our defense.
02:51And, uh, certainly with Joseph and Phillips and, uh, you know, we're obviously trying
02:57to improve there.
02:58Uh, but I, I do think we'll get better.
03:01McCarthy said that this team is going through growing pains and do you have faith that he
03:06can guide this team through those pains right this season?
03:10Absolutely.
03:11That's why we've hired Mike in the first place.
03:14He's got a, you know, a resume that shows that, uh, he gets the job done, uh, as a head
03:19coach and, uh, Mike's coach, uh, you know, championship caliber teams.
03:24He's won super bowls.
03:25He's been in several championship games and feel like he can get the job done for us.
