00:00Startin' to sense a little bit of trepidation from some, some 49er fans.
00:07Okay, Justin Herbert.
00:10Justin Herbert, Goo.
00:12Came into the league...
00:14kinda gangbusters.
00:17Do you think he's getting better?
00:19Or do you think...
00:21maybe it's leveled off?
00:24He's getting better now that he has Jim Harbaugh at his disposal.
00:28Okay, he's throwing...
00:29Okay, now he's throwing less than he's ever thrown.
00:31That's fine.
00:32But if you needed him to throw more,
00:34he's not having a physical stand.
00:36I don't feel like...
00:37From a physical standpoint, he's a dream.
00:40Everything that you want.
00:41So when I look at Purdy and his stature,
00:43that concerns me.
00:45And Justin Herbert's had batted balls,
00:47but I'm watching this thing moving forward, Stony,
00:50if this is going to be an ailment to Brock Purdy.
00:52So when you talk to me about,
00:54or you say, Justin Herbert,
00:55I'm all in, okay?
00:57Hey, they feel like right now they need to run the ball
01:00or keep him at 25 passes,
01:03but if you needed to say,
01:04take that away,
01:05we need to throw at 50,
01:07he could be your guy.
01:08And that's why I would say to him,
01:11I think he's getting better,
01:12especially now with Jim Harbaugh.
01:14What about Josh Allen?
01:17I think he hit the ground like LeBron James
01:21and shown everybody on any given Sunday
01:24he can look like Hercules,
01:26but now he puts himself in harm's way
01:29too much for my liking.
01:32He can make every throw on the football field.
01:34He's got legs.
01:35So your question is,
01:37do I think he's getting better?
01:38I think we've seen the best of Josh Allen.
01:42And I would take that.
01:43He's leveling off.
01:44Yes, sir.
01:45Or he's reached his ceiling.
01:47I believe so.
01:48What about this guy?
01:49And I know he's hurt and he's been hurt,
01:51but to me, this is an interesting one.
01:53And I'm just throwing these out to start a conversation.
01:55What about Tua?
01:58I've been, even before the injury, Stani,
02:00I never liked his lack...
02:02I thought he had a lot of lack of arm strength.
02:04He was a product of a system in Bama.
02:07I don't think he's the guy.
02:09And that's just me.
02:11So, you know, I was never high on him.
02:14Okay.
02:15And I'm not...
02:16Yeah, I got you.
02:17I didn't ask you to disagree with me.
02:18I asked you because, you know,
02:20I think there are a lot of quarterbacks
02:22who start out pretty well
02:24and then it's just kind of who they are.
02:27Like Jalen Hurts.
02:29Jalen Hurts is a player who...
02:33I think he's...
02:34Everybody...
02:35Fans in Philly loved him a lot more
02:37two, three years ago.
02:39And I'm just...
02:41And they would tell you that he hasn't
02:43gotten better enough.
02:45Yeah.
02:46And so...
02:49What I'm sensing,
02:51and I know it's going to invite
02:54people to rip me a little bit.
02:56But it's reality.
02:57We're not hating.
02:58But...
02:59Are people worried that Brock Purdy
03:01could start to level off?
03:04Or do you think Brock Purdy's a quarterback
03:06that's still improving
03:07and there's just no doubt about it?
03:09Or do you think Brock Purdy's a quarterback
03:11who...
03:12You know what?
03:13He's quarterbacked 25, 30 games
03:15and the book's getting out on him a little more
03:18and you want to keep him in the pocket
03:20and you want to contest his passes
03:22and you don't want him to scramble right.
03:25All those things.
03:27That's what I think.
03:28Can it be all of that, though?
03:30And that's the beauty of it
03:31and that's why we get another shot to watch him
03:33another four quarters this week
03:34and the rest of the season.
03:35That's why I'm looking forward to these next two games
03:38in particular.
03:39But it sounds...
03:40I'm not speaking for you, Stony,
03:41but I want to dare
03:43and I'm not going to tell that person or persons
03:45they're wrong.
03:46But who's at a point to where we've seen
03:48so much of Brock Purdy
03:49you'll stick your chest out and say
03:51he's a finished product
03:53regardless if it's good or bad.
03:55Well, he's not a finished product.
03:56That's what I'm saying.
03:57So they can make an adjustment to him
03:59and then he's got to make the adjustment.
04:01But what if he can't?
04:02But then, again, it's what if he can?
04:05But let's put that right on the table
04:06brought to you by Atco, Stony.
04:07Before we got this McCaffrey news
04:10and Debo news
04:11he was riding in a limousine of wealth
04:14of things around him.
04:16Right.
04:18To where an average...
04:19I'm not calling them average.
04:20An average quarterback would lick its best
04:23in the Niner system.
04:25Right.
04:26But now that's gone away a little bit.
04:27Right.
04:28A lot of it.
04:29So we will get a more expansive view
04:33of the player.
04:34You know, it's like Draymond Green to me.
04:36Draymond.
04:37Well, Draymond, you know,
04:38Draymond playing with Steph,
04:40Klay, Durant.
04:42Oh, my God.
04:43Oh, that's a great...
04:44Oh, my God.
04:45The guy's unbelievable.
04:46But we all know...
04:48That's a good point.
04:49If we took him off the Warriors,
04:51he probably couldn't do
04:53more things for another team.
04:56Oh, man.
04:57And that's the question
04:58I'm wondering about Brock Purdy.
05:00That's a great one.
05:01Jeffson Moran wants to talk Niners.
05:04Hey, Jeff, what's up, buddy?
05:06Hey, guys.
05:07Thanks for taking my call.
05:08So a couple points about Purdy.
05:10Look, I think Purdy has improved
05:12over the time he's been here.
05:14He's growing up.
05:15He's getting thicker.
05:16He's getting physically stronger.
05:17True.
05:18His arm strength is certainly,
05:20I think, equivalent to Joe Montana.
05:22Not comparing them as quarterbacks,
05:24but Joe didn't have a big arm either,
05:26but Brock has demonstrated
05:28he can make all the throws.
05:29He's demonstrated an incredible
05:31presence in the pocket, right?
05:33Everybody's crapping on him
05:35about this last game.
05:36You remember the throw that he made
05:38in the fourth quarter
05:40where he, like, does a figure eight
05:42ducking under pass rushers?
05:44Comes back up and throws out
05:45to the sideline
05:46for an incredible catch by Devo.
05:48That's pretty good pocket presence.
05:50That's pretty good mobility.
05:51I'd stack that up against anybody
05:54in terms of that escapability issue.
05:56What I'm concerned about, though,
05:58is, you know, he dropped back
06:00several times in this game,
06:02and he had time,
06:03but nobody was apparently open.
06:05And I think that's a little bit
06:07of rust on IU.
06:08Can people say he takes, what,
06:10four games to get that, you know,
06:12get back into football shape?
06:14Devo demonstrated last year
06:16in the Super Bowl.
06:17He's not great against man coverage.
06:19What we need to do is get some speed
06:22back into the game,
06:23and you've got Correndo
06:24who runs a 4-3.
06:26You got Cowling that runs a 4-3.
06:28Get these players out there,
06:30especially now you got Devo out
06:32and you got CMC out.
06:34Put some speed out there.
06:35Put Correndo out in the slot.
06:37You know, get Cowling out there
06:39as a wide receiver
06:40and try throwing the ball deep sometimes
06:42to stretch those defenses.
06:44That zero-blitz defense
06:46that Minnesota ran
06:48was hurting us clearly,
06:49and that's what I think other teams
06:51are going to be looking to do.
06:52We've got to be able to score quickly
06:54and spread that
06:55and stretch that defense.
06:56That's what I think.
06:57Hey, can I ask you a quick question
06:59about speed?
07:00Stouty and I go back and forth
07:02on Brandon Ayuk.
07:03I think they could utilize
07:05his speed more.
07:06Do you look at Ayuk
07:07who got 30 million as a speedster?
07:10Because it sounds like you don't.
07:12No, I think he's got speed,
07:14but I don't think he's back
07:15in football shape yet.
07:16I think that's what we're seeing.
07:18Right?
07:19So give him another game or two.
07:20I think the latter half of the season,
07:22you know, we're going to see Ayuk
07:24like he looked last year.
07:26But right now,
07:27I just don't think he's there.
07:28But again,
07:29why give somebody like Cowling
07:30a speed burner
07:32if you're not going to utilize him?
07:33He looked pretty good in preseason.
07:35He made, you know,
07:36a lot of good catches,
07:37including deep sideline passes.
07:40And Gorendo, 220 in a 4-3?
07:4240?
07:43Come on.
07:44I mean, I'm not saying
07:45replace Mason.
07:46Not at all.
07:47But when you go to spell Mason,
07:49how come you weren't
07:50putting Gorendo in
07:51for more than one play?
07:53Like I said,
07:54put him in motion.
07:55Throw the ball to him.
07:57Get some speed out there.
07:58And I think that's going to make
07:59the offense look much better.
08:01Thanks, Jeff.
08:02Appreciate the call.
08:03And Stouty,
08:04I can hear your voice now
08:05because you said it a couple days ago
08:07when you compared
08:08you were going down this road.
08:11Steve Kerr with the
08:13you just want to talk basketball,
08:14don't you?
08:15Steve Kerr with the younger players
08:17kind of not trusting them
08:18or wanting to play them.
08:20But all we've heard
08:21this offseason
08:22on any Niner podcast
08:23or even on our airwaves
08:25is Gorendo
08:26and these guys with speed
08:28and we haven't seen it.
08:29They haven't even got an opportunity.
08:31So I'm curious to see
08:33one,
08:34how are you going to disperse
08:35the totes in the backfield
08:37and who's going to spell
08:39or change a pace?
08:41Remember that?
08:42Used to have fire
08:43and thunder and lightning.
08:44A guy that is quick,
08:46hit it,
08:47and then a guy that can bruise
08:48and soften the defense.
08:49So,
08:50Kyle's like a one-trick pony
08:52in that sense thus far
08:53two weeks into the season
08:55when you talk about
08:56carries.
08:58Yeah.
08:59I'm fascinated to see.
09:02I'm more fascinated to see
09:04the 49ers play this game Sunday
09:06than the first two games.
09:08Because I'd like to see
09:10how teams handle adversity
09:12and the 49ers have some right now.
09:15They're missing
09:16probably their two biggest playmakers.
09:18So,
09:19I didn't know how to feel
09:20watching that game Sunday,
09:21watching it back,
09:22watching it back
09:23Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
09:24and here we are Thursday.
09:26So,
09:27all of us,
09:28no matter what side of the fence
09:29you are on
09:31in regard to Brock Purdy,
09:32all of us can agree
09:35I'll use the sports version
09:37of intriguing
09:38to see how he's going to
09:39ball out without some weapons.
09:41But, Stony,
09:42I've got to fight you, man.
09:43I don't think this is good
09:45for the Niners.
09:47Because if,
09:48let's just say
09:49he's not the Brock Purdy we've seen,
09:51then where are you at
09:53in the grand scheme of things?
09:54So,
09:55you would rather
09:56never see him in this situation,
09:58pay him,
09:59then get into the situation
10:01and realize he might not be the guy?
10:03Well, I guess
10:04I'm throwing at you
10:05I want to pay him
10:06predicated on when my team is whole
10:09and how he's looked.
10:11So, that's why I know.
10:12And I'm watching,
10:13but are we going to let
10:14whatever transpires,
10:15let's just say it's not
10:16anything to write home about,
10:18supersede what he's done
10:19when they're whole?
10:21Does it supersede?
10:22Not necessarily.
10:24Does it factor in?
10:25It should.
10:26I would think it should.
