00:00Today has been all about Mark Randy's emotions. It's been very wobbly. Yeah, it's been very wobbly the Debo thing
00:07Really fired a lot of people up and that one I get
00:11It doesn't offend me, but I understand it's hard to hear the Ocho one
00:15And if you're just joining us to play it again
00:18Randy and and anybody who doesn't dig this I I got to push back here
00:23when we're not Joe says
00:26They don't even need all of these stars
00:29First of all, I
00:31Stopped my brain from going too far. It doesn't I don't think he means like they don't need any good players
00:38Kyle Shanahan's that wonderful stick any old guy out there, but here's why
00:45He's absolutely, right, and I'm gonna use two specific pieces of information to prove it
00:52first of all, I
00:54Have all the scars and the L's on my forehead
01:01for years of
01:03Supporting Jimmy Garoppolo when much of this town thought he stunk or at best was as the kids say
01:12mid
01:13Okay
01:15The second he left here. He couldn't even hold
01:19Couldn't even hold quite frankly a backup job in the NFL
01:25He made Devante Adams go to Netflix to get his frustrations out
01:31That's how bad he was
01:33But Kyle Shanahan system took him to a 10-point lead in the Super Bowl
01:39So couldn't I use that as evidence that?
01:42Kyle is largely the straw that stirs the drink and yes
01:46He has got a resume of
01:49Elevating players within his system and this can apply to Brock too if you want to a degree
01:56I think it's just a wonderful fit
01:58But that he's the straw that stirs the drink and and here's the point he can win with multiple groups of
02:06players
02:08some more
02:09physically impressive than others
02:12Here's the second piece of data that I'm going to use which is
02:16going into this weekend the San Francisco 49ers are
02:22missing their two best
02:25offensive options
02:27Can I get away with that statement?
02:29There are two best offensive options. Yeah, they're missing both of them
02:35Yet on the road in the division. I understand the injuries on the other team, too
02:41But on the road in the division and missing their two top offensive options
02:45They are the single biggest Vegas favorite of the entire weekend
02:52How about that right doesn't that?
02:56Back up what Acho is saying, which I think essentially is take some stars away
03:02Niners are still good. Yeah, and I think about
03:062019 more than I do
03:072024 when I hear Acho's comments because I think about that team that Kyle Shanahan
03:13Quote-unquote took to the Super Bowl and you mentioned Jimmy Garoppolo as the quarterback and Acho
03:19Had it close talking about the running backs when he said Rita mostert and Wilson
03:25It actually was Tevin Coleman as well. None of them are
03:28Stars and if you want to look at who they had on their team
03:31You had Fred Warner in his second year not yet a star now Fred Warner's a star and he's probably going to the Hall of Fame
03:38Dre Greenlaw was a rookie not yet a star George Kittle had had one really good year
03:44He was on his way to being a star. You had Emanuel Sanders not a star
03:49Defensively you had D Ford who was never a star. He was former. Very good player fine
03:56Richard Sherman at the tail end of his career and he's probably going to the Hall of Fame
04:01You had Nick Bosa very young player. I believe he was a rookie as well
04:05so these were people that were not yet stars and what I hear Acho saying is
04:10When Brock Purdy gets that big big contract that Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have the ability to draft the next group of
04:19Warner Greenlaw Bosa
04:22Kittle Debo who is a also in his I think rookie year or second year on that Super Bowl team
04:28So it doesn't mean that you can't do it if you have stars
04:32But it also means you can do it if you don't have stars
04:35Let's listen to it again Emanuel Acho on the facility on
04:39FS1 want to dismantle the myth that the Niners are gonna be without talent once Brock pretty gets paid as he still do not like
04:45For those that don't realize tell Noah who funga was a fifth-round pick all pro Fred Warner third-round pick future Hall of Famer
04:51George Kittle was a fifth-round pick all pro the Niners know how to draft particularly late in the draft
04:57To say that the Niners will be without talent once Brock Purdy gets paid is is ignorant. It's uneducated
05:03It's uninformed and it has a lack of research as it pertains to the San Francisco 49ers
05:08Not only will they have talent even when Brock Purdy gets paid Kyle Shanahan is the machine
05:14Y'all realize Jordan Mason Christian McCaffrey's backup running back undrafted Jordan Mason is on pace for 2,100 yards
05:20No, he won't get there. But if he started offseason, he'd probably get to 15 1600
05:25So it's not even like the Niners need all of these stars
05:29They went to the Super Bowl without Christian McCaffrey with Fred with Matt Brita, Jeff Wilson and Raheem. Oh, yeah
05:35I just think all he's saying is that without a lot of these stars without this one without that one
05:40The Niners are a hell of a program and they're always gonna be good. I
05:44Don't and I agree
05:47Wholeheartedly, I've been like this is a different form of what I said to you a week and a half ago
05:52When I get knocked off when people go windows closing
05:57Windows about to close right open the damn window. You're about to sign a 24 year old quarterback who you love
06:04That's not the end of the window. That's not the end of the road boys the men. Thank you. That's the that's the beginning
06:12We're at the launching point and I firmly believe that Kyle Shanahan John Lynch
06:19Parag the rest of that group
06:21they will continue to by the way miss on some of their draft picks and
06:26hit on a lot of their draft picks and acquisitions in a way that will allow them to
06:33Construct a very good roster around a quarterback even one who's paid
06:37Certainly, and I know that Mike Florio had a similar comment and I hope we play that a little bit later in the show about the
06:43Same idea about what they've been able to do and as Emanuel Acho was laying that out
06:48I was thinking about the 2019 team Raheem Mostert
06:52undrafted
06:53772 yards that year Matt Brita undrafted
06:57623 yards Tevin Coleman third round pick cast off from Atlanta
07:02544 yards that's nearly 1900 yards on the ground from a couple of undrafted and a 26 year old cast off. So
07:10Does the window close when Purdy gets paid of course not and it stays open
07:15Because of what Acho was talking about with all of these finds and what Kyle Shanahan does as the difference
07:21I mean the bar like at the bottom of all of this what I think he's saying
07:26Is that the Niners are really good outfit and a really good team because of Kyle Shanahan
07:33That's what I think he's saying
07:35He called him the machine I thought that was Pat Burrell, maybe it was Kyle Shanahan under that mask
07:40anyway, I
07:42Like I agree with that
07:44like I
07:45Wonder if all of the oh, do you have a room at Shanahan's house?
07:49I wonder are we doing that to Acho now today because that's what he just said
07:53That's what he just said this team is really good because of Kyle Shanahan
08:00Well, I don't know what more evidence you need than to look at how badly he botched
08:05The draft where he traded two firsts actually three firsts to move up and get Trey Lance
08:10Trey Lance becomes a bust for this team. I think he might be a bust overall and the jury might still be out
08:16I don't think that the jury's out the jury's coming back into the box to deliver the verdict
08:21But the point is you squandered three first-round picks on a quarterback who couldn't play for you and you didn't miss a beat
08:29so if that isn't exhibit a on how Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch were able to
08:35Withstand that overcome that and yes, and I'm looking at you. Mr.
08:40Lone is a principal at a school where my wife works who has been critical of John Lynch
08:44I'm looking at you sir, because Wow, he's critical of John Lynch shaking down principals of schools. No doubt. Okay
08:51I'm here for that. He and I have a little bit of a side beef, which is
08:56playful friendly beef
08:57But all you need to do is look at how badly they blew that and how that didn't affect them when I owed
09:04Like it happened in Carolina and look what's happening. Oh God, people are gonna get fired. People are getting benched. People are getting cut
09:11It's a total mess two games into the year
09:14The 49ers made this colossal error and haven't missed the NFC title game since
09:21Right say that again
09:22The Niners made this colossal error and haven't missed the NFC title game since
09:30Come on, Grandy
09:34Get on the bus Gus, can you agree that the Diners have had the most talented roster in the NFL the last couple of years?
09:40Yes. Yes, and they had fallen short of winning a Super Bowl
09:43I'm my only argument and there's no way you could possibly disagree with this is
09:49They haven't done it with this talent
09:51How can you expect them to do it with even less town because I think that you and him are having different
09:57Conversations, I think there's a different ending standards
10:02Then you're saying you're putting in in in my mind
10:05You're saying that he's saying the 49ers don't need all of these stars to win the Super Bowl
10:11So it sounded like to me
10:12I think he's saying the 49ers don't need all of these stars to be really good and a factor every year and
10:18Obviously, I want to win the Super Bowl, of course, of course, but do you see the little yeah, just a little difference there
10:23That's what that's my read on it. My read is that if you want to go back through the last
10:29I don't even know how far back you want to go
10:31but we could
10:32Look at every roster every year and you could tell me who has the best roster and I would bet
10:37that more times than not the team with the best roster did not win the Super Bowl and
10:42last year is a good example where you just said that the Niners have had the best roster and
10:48They did last year and they didn't win the Super Bowl in Kansas City beat, Philadelphia
10:53Philadelphia might add a better roster than Kansas City
10:55We know that the Rams didn't have the best roster and Tampa Bay
10:58With Tommy when they beat Kansas City was that the best roster and we can go all the way back in time
11:04The team with the best roster
11:06More often than not doesn't win the Super Bowl that's subjective in and of itself
11:10I bet I could find a bunch of people to be like you want to know who's got the best roster
11:14Whoever has Patrick, right? I don't care who the rest of the players are
11:20There are people who think that I don't know that they're terribly wrong by the way
11:25So, you know that in and of itself is subjective. Let's hear from the people eight at eight nine five seven nine five
11:32Seventy what say you are the kind of newer question we can still do the Debo stuff
11:37but the newer question is essentially on the 49ers just good because Kyle Shanahan and
11:45Therefore it will sustain
11:47Or are there other reasons and you have a different outlook Matt and San Rafael here on Willard and Dibbs, I'm at what's up
11:55Hey guys, two quick hits before I talk about what you just mentioned
12:00One is I agree with Debo that the Niners had the best roster last year if you switch quarterbacks
12:06I think the Niners wing going away and this is the Mahomes factor that you just talked about
12:11The second take is I think the Hargrave signing is going to go down as one of the biggest mistakes of this regime
12:19The third thing is I agree with Achoo and that the Niners are always going to be competitive with Kyle
12:25But here's my twist on it Kyle wants his players to play exactly the way he wants them to play
12:31They're like little pawns that he's moving around on a chessboard and I think that's good enough to get you really far
12:37But the question remains
12:39Playing that way making your team that way. Is that enough to win a Super Bowl or does Kyle?
12:44I said this yesterday when I called this Kyle have to change
12:47There's not have to adapt because I think there has to be some of that Matt. Can I ask you a question?
12:53Do you feel like there are other coaches around the league and and I'm gonna admit
13:00This is a little unfair the way I'm gonna characterize it
13:02But because you said that Kyle's got his players as if they're like game pieces on a little pawns
13:08Pawns and he's moving them around. Are you under the impression that let's take a
13:12Sirianni or a Dan Campbell guys who have that different sort of like blue-collar feel about them
13:19Are you under the impression that they're just like, all right guys
13:24Go play go do it how you like and I hope it's gonna work out. We'll see at the post game party
13:31What do you think Matt?
13:33So I'll say that those coaches are much more like that
13:37They have coordinators that they rely on I'll just not have an offensive coordinator that he relies on it
13:44I'm not talking about the defense
13:45I'm only talking about the offense right you talk about
13:47Perfume in the way he plays at parties like I know what Kyle wants me to do and I do it
13:52That's one of the issues that people have calling the system quarterback, which is crap in my mind
13:56I mean playing quarterback in the NFL I think is the hardest position in any sport that there is it is shocking
14:02I can't imagine what it's like that said Kyle tries to make it easier on the quarterback to not have to make
14:09Secondary decisions to say if this happens I go here and I get it because it works almost all the time
14:14But it doesn't work all the time
14:16And he saw it on Sunday because pretty wanted to go places and those places weren't there
14:21And that's the sort of the nuance that I'm trying to create. I like a show kind of a great coach
14:28I
14:31Get it I get it Matt Matt. It's another good call. Thank you for calling
14:34I'd say this about the whole idea of like Kyle doesn't rely on coordinators sure he does
14:40He relies on a coordinator on the other side of the ball than his own expertise
14:44Which is what almost every coach in the NFL does bill Belichick you think bill Belichick had a defensive coordinator that he gave a ripabout
14:52No Nick Sirianni has two coordinators
14:54And why does he have two coordinators because he's probably not great at either thing because he's a defensive guy and
15:02Last year that defense in the second half of the year in particular
15:07Starting with the Niners going on six consecutive touchdown drives that defense got
15:13Torched and so they went you know what Nick tell you what you're gonna keep your job
15:19Introduce yourself to Vic Fangio
15:22That's calling the defense now. How's that working out for you? Not a great start Bob not great
15:28Not great in money for sure, but that's my point like most NFL head coaches
15:33Even if they've got someone that has that that label if you're a defensive guy
15:39You're in charge of the defense and you hire an OC if you're an offensive guy
15:44You're in charge of the offense and you hire a DC, and that's what we got in San Francisco
15:49Right and many people are critical of Kyle Shanahan for his game management
15:54And if he gets to a point where they start to lose more than they win
15:58Then there'll be pressure for him to actually bring in an offensive coordinator to unburdened him from that duty so that he can focus
16:06On areas where maybe he falls short you think that would ever happen if they struggle absolutely
16:11I got a hard time believe I Kyle Shanahan is in position to where he's like you want
16:16Someone else to call plays about it's not so much that you want someone else to call plays as much as it is you want
16:23Somebody to help with game management because if you want to criticize Kyle
16:27During a game of anything game management is the one area you could look at whether it's knowing the overtime rules or
16:34Using your timeouts correctly at the end of the half clock management
16:38There are things that he doesn't do in some people's eyes that are worthy of criticism
16:45And that's where you might get to a spot where you know you bring in somebody else
16:49And you know you already have Brandon Staley on the staff who was on the defensive side of the ball
16:53But somebody with head coaching experience who I'm not saying that he's gonna be put in that spot
16:59But if if this season doesn't go great
17:02You might hear a little bit more of a clamor for him to get some help in some areas
17:06I'm looking for a guy who knows
17:09Football he knows how to run an offense doesn't need to call plays
17:15And I want him to be a large person
17:17Bigger than average person and I want his first name to be Tom
17:20and then Kyle could have big Tom and
17:23Big Tom could just follow him around on the sideline and intimidate other people and help him with clock man
17:29Are you talking about big Dom no big Tom? They've got big Dom. I want big Tom Tom Brady
17:35That's right, just some random guy named Tom anyone named Tom, but Brady's good
17:40Brady's fine if broadcasting for 40 million dollars a year doesn't work out sure he's already a part owner of the Raiders
17:46So that's gonna be something that might be preventative. How about dog trainer in Milpitas? Hi dog trainer?
17:53What's going on?
17:55How you doing? Hey like the show today like the conversation?
18:00Quickly the Debo thing
18:03The gold standard I think
18:06Would be the Patriots when both Belichick and Brady were there. I can't imagine
18:13Belichick not firing a player or not
18:17What is it not?
18:19Finding a player. I mean Belichick had rules. You don't pop off on media like that
18:24You don't talk about the team like that
18:26It just seems some of the things that 49ers do just seem to be what Brady what would Brady and Belichick would see as immature
18:32number two
18:34I heard a story once the Belichick gave all the photos to a few Bellman at a hotel and paid them to stay up
18:40all night on their shift and
18:42Keep an eye on all the doors in the rooms of all the players and if anybody went in or out after curfew on the
18:47Road that they were to report to Belichick and he had them do it. So all his assistant coaches could sleep
18:53I don't know if that story is true or not. But but the last thing is just like the guy hinted earlier
18:59Los Gatos High School second-string quarterback
19:04San Jose State third-string quarterback
19:06Bill Walsh hardly ever played but you know what he knew he wanted to coach and
19:12He always was a great offensive mind and look at the tree that came behind him from his training and teaching and yet
19:20He always had an offensive coordinator
19:22So, I don't know why Kyle doesn't doesn't do the same thing
19:26But he never had an offensive coordinator that had the same role as an as other offensive coordinators
19:32Do you know what I mean? Doug trainer? Like that's just like that's kind of the way the tree in the NFL
19:38Thanks for calling that that's the way the tree in the NFL works a lot of guys
19:43You know what? I mean? Like how about Mike McDaniel?
19:45This is an example Kyle is not like never had someone on offense that's allowed to talk to him
19:51I feel like we we we pitch it this way sometimes like Kyle is over there. He's a mad scientist
19:57There's steam coming out of his ears
19:59And if you're an offensive coach and you talk to him you're fired like that's I don't think that's what's going on
20:04I know what the perception is, but Mike McDaniel I think was his run game coordinator at the time
20:11But that's another offensive voice who by the way has turned into
20:15Like a very very smart some would say brilliant young coach in the league and the new hot name is another guy from the tree
20:23And that's the Saints offensive coordinator Clint Kubiak
20:26So you tell me that Clint Kubiak was told to sit quietly in the corner and not
20:30Offer up his insights and his thoughts and his opinions. I don't think that that's the case with Kyle Shanahan
20:36I would imagine he sits down in offensive meetings and invites all kinds of opinions and schemes and thoughts and when it comes time to
20:44Make the decisions he makes them because he's the head coach, and he's the offensive coordinator, but you're right mark
20:50You can't look at the lineage of coaches who've gone on from the Shanahan tree to do big things head coach
20:57Coordinator etc and think that they were just what just dummies here who is like on the coattails
21:03Yeah, I like I actually can't speak to this
21:06I don't know if Kyle Shanahan like when it's time to call a play obviously Kyle's in charge
21:13But are we under the impression that if anybody has another idea Kyle's just like you shut up
21:20I don't think that I
21:23Know the way I don't know and obviously I'm being right theatrical. Yeah, but like are you allowed to be like hey, hey, buddy
21:32What about this and Kyle might be like oh, I was good idea. I don't know I really don't
21:39Mike McDaniel would be the one to ask yeah, and I'm I'm most interested by this season and his newfound
21:47Desire to go for it on fourth down
21:49You've added mr.. Go for it on fourth down Brandon Staley to the coaching staff. I'll be it on the defensive side is
21:56Brandon Staley influencing Kyle Shanahan's newfound aggressiveness
22:01That's something that I'd love to find out
22:03I don't know if we ever will you think it's daily it seems like they're going for it now more often than they have
22:08In previous years what if it's Brock and Brock saying Brock's like I met Dan Campbell in the NFC title game last only and he really
22:16He really I thought was inspirational. I think we should start doing things like him, so when it's fourth down
22:21We go for it every time
22:23Every time coach. What do you think I?
22:26Like it and stuff
