00:00Patterns, they are all around us.
00:03You can see patterns in buildings.
00:06Patterns are used in clothing and design.
00:08And patterns are everywhere in math.
00:12Just look at the numbers on this ruler, the lines on this ruler, the lines on the paper.
00:19You might be wondering, what do patterns do?
00:22Well, patterns do the same things over and over again.
00:26Patterns repeat.
00:29Now this is super cool.
00:31Every pattern follows a special rule.
00:34The rule is how the pattern works.
00:37We'll give you an example.
00:41Look at this pattern.
00:42It begins with a red rectangle followed by a yellow rectangle.
00:47Next is a red rectangle and another yellow rectangle.
00:50Next is a red rectangle followed by another yellow rectangle.
00:55It's doing the same thing over and over again.
00:58So it is definitely a pattern.
01:01What special rule does this pattern follow?
01:04Well, rectangles alternate between red and yellow.
01:09Do you see that?
01:10The rule tells us how the pattern works.
01:12In this pattern, rectangles alternate between red and yellow.
01:20So remember, every pattern follows a special rule.
01:23The rule is how the pattern works.
01:26If you figure out the rule, you've cracked the pattern's code.
01:31Even if there is a part of the pattern missing, you will be able to find it because you cracked
01:36the code.
01:38Here is the pattern we just showed you.
01:40Imagine this spot missing.
01:42What belongs in this spot?
01:44Well, let's think of this pattern's rule.
01:47Rectangles alternate between red and yellow.
01:50So what color rectangle goes here?
01:55Yeah, a red rectangle.
01:58By figuring out the rule, we were able to fill this spot in the pattern.
02:04Alright, we have another pattern here.
02:08Instead of shapes, we have numbers in this pattern.
02:11The first thing we need to do is find out what makes this a pattern.
02:15Look at each of the numbers and see if you can see a pattern.
02:21What rule does this pattern follow, do you know?
02:25Yeah, you always add one to get the next number.
02:30Every number goes up by one each time.
02:33That's the pattern.
02:34Great job!
02:35Okay, now we are going to play a game called Complete the Pattern.
02:41We'll show you a pattern and then you can try to crack the code and complete it.
02:48Here's the first one.
02:49You'll notice there are a lot of shapes here, so we should probably just look at this pattern
02:54line by line and see what we discover.
02:59On this first line, we see a green circle, a blue square, and a green circle.
03:06It's almost like a blue square sandwich.
03:10The second line is similar to the first, except there are two squares in between the green
03:16circles instead of just one.
03:21This third line is just like the second line, except there are three blue squares in between
03:27the green circles instead of two.
03:30Notice a pattern?
03:33So let's complete this pattern.
03:35How many blue squares are in this fourth line?
03:40Yeah, four.
03:44The fourth line has four blue squares in between the green circles.
03:49How can we know that?
03:51Well, the blue squares increase by one each line.
03:55The blue squares in between the green circles keep growing by one every line.
04:01That's how this pattern works.
04:03Great job!
04:04All right, Andy, really?
04:08He does this every afternoon?
04:09It's a pattern for him?
04:11Every afternoon he dances near the woods?
04:14We are playing complete the pattern, Andy.
04:16We don't have time for these super cool dance moves.
04:20They are pretty cool.
04:21Okay, they are.
04:22Oh, goodness.
04:23Kevin, I know you dance every afternoon as well.
04:27That's a pattern for you too, but Kevin, we really do have to get back to our game, okay?
04:35Come on.
04:36All right, if there are no more interruptions, all right, let's look at this next pattern.
04:42Oh, goodness.
04:43Let's look at this series of creatures, these animals.
04:47The first is an interesting looking hamster followed by two birds, then there's a hamster,
04:55and then there's a mystery spot that we have to complete, and a bird, and then the hamster,
05:02and then two birds.
05:04That's pretty cool.
05:07Let's complete this pattern.
05:08Just by looking at this pattern, what do you think goes in this spot?
05:13Yeah, a bird.
05:17A bird goes here.
05:19Now, how do we know that a bird goes here?
05:22Well, to crack the code and figure out the pattern, we have to look at the clues.
05:27We see a hamster first, followed by two birds, then another hamster, and two birds, and it
05:34goes on and on.
05:36The rule for this pattern, then, is that a hamster is followed by two birds, and then
05:42the pattern repeats.
05:47Patterns repeat.
05:48Andy, please.
05:49Okay.
05:50The kids are learning.
05:53Please.
05:54All right.
05:55Patterns repeat.
05:56I was kind of waiting for Kevin.
05:57Okay.
05:58I guess he isn't going to interrupt him.
06:01Kind of impressed.
06:03Oh, never mind.
06:06Apparently, I spoke too soon.
06:08All right, Kevin, we really do have a final pattern to look at, okay?
06:14I think we're ready.
06:16Here is the final pattern for us to complete.
06:19Is this a pattern with shapes or numbers?
06:22Yeah, numbers.
06:24We need to figure out what the final number is in this pattern.
06:31Look at the different numbers and see what pattern you notice.
06:35Once you figure out what rule these numbers are following, you'll be able to figure out
06:40this last number.
06:42What is this missing number in the pattern?
06:46Yep, four.
06:50Great job.
06:53How do we know that this missing number is the number four?
06:56Well, what rule did you notice the pattern was following?
07:01Yes.
07:03You subtract one to get the next number.
07:05So the first number is nine and the next number is one less than nine, eight.
07:10Then you subtract one to get seven.
07:13You subtract one to get six.
07:15You subtract one to get five.
07:17And finally, you subtract one from five to get our answer, four.
07:22Okay, it's official.
07:24You are awesome at patterns.
07:26It's true.
07:27It's true.
07:29Patterns are so much fun.
07:30When you see a pattern, you can try to figure out what rule it is following.
07:35Patterns are all around us, just waiting to be discovered.
