00:00Hey kids, welcome to shape practice.
00:15Today we are going to learn about shapes.
00:18Let's take a look at some of these shapes.
00:23You may recognize some of these shapes, but others you may not know.
00:27Each shape has attributes that set them apart from other shapes.
00:31Learning these can help us know which shape is which.
00:35So let's take a closer look.
00:42Here we have a triangle.
00:43But what makes this shape a triangle?
00:48For a shape to be a triangle, it must have three sides and three angles.
00:53This shape has one, two, three sides.
00:59Okay it has three sides, but does it have three angles?
01:03Well the angle is where two straight sides join together.
01:08Sometimes the angles are called corners.
01:11We can see that this triangle has one, two, three angles.
01:16So this shape is a triangle because it has three sides and three angles.
01:20Now how about this shape?
01:25It looks a lot like the other shape, but it's more squished.
01:29Is this still a triangle?
01:33Well let's count the sides and angles and see what it is.
01:37Okay we have one, two, three sides, and one, two, three angles.
01:43Three sides and three angles.
01:45That means that it IS a triangle.
01:48Great job guys!
01:49Okay let's look at some more shapes.
01:55Now we're going to look at quadrilaterals.
01:57A quadrilateral is any shape that has four sides and four angles.
02:03Many shapes can fit the attributes of a quadrilateral.
02:07Here are a couple quadrilaterals.
02:10Let's learn the names of these shapes.
02:12The first shape is called a square.
02:15The next shape is called a rectangle.
02:18What is this next shape?
02:22Great job!
02:23This is a square just like the other one.
02:25What is this last shape called?
02:29You got it!
02:30This is another rectangle.
02:33All of these shapes are quadrilaterals because they have four sides and four angles.
02:39Wow!
02:41These shapes have a lot of sides and angles.
02:44Let's count how many sides are on this shape.
02:47There's one, two, three, four, five.
02:52How many angles do you see?
02:55Five!
02:57It has five angles!
02:59A shape that has five sides and five angles is called a pentagon.
03:03There are so many different shapes that can make a pentagon.
03:06It's really awesome guys!
03:07Go home and draw some!
03:11Now let's look at this shape here.
03:13It's another shape with a lot of sides and angles.
03:16How many sides and angles can you see?
03:26Let's count them!
03:27One, two, three, four, five, six sides and one, two, three, four, five, six angles.
03:35Wow!
03:36That's a lot!
03:37A shape with six sides and six angles is called a hexagon.
03:43You can draw all of these shapes by counting sides and angles.
03:48Great job again!
03:49You guys are awesome!
03:50But how are we going to remember all these shape names?
03:53We've learned so many!
03:55Let's make a list to help us remember everything we've learned.
03:58Here we have a triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, and a hexagon.
04:06Tri- means three.
04:08That's why a triangle has three sides and three angles.
04:13The word quad- means four.
04:15That's why a quadrilateral has four sides and four angles.
04:21Pent- means five, which is why a pentagon has five sides and five angles.
04:27And hex- means six, so it has six sides and six angles.
04:33That's a lot to remember!
04:35Thanks for learning shapes with me today guys!
04:37It's been awesome!
04:38We'll see you next time!
