00:15Area is something we can discover about shapes.
00:19The area of a shape refers to how much space is inside of it.
00:26Area is very different from perimeter.
00:29If you'll remember, perimeter is the space around a shape.
00:33Area is the space inside of a shape.
00:39Alright so area is the space inside of a shape and perimeter is the space around a shape.
00:48So they're very different, aren't they?
00:49In this video it's all about area.
00:52We're going to learn how to find the space inside of a shape.

01:00Let's play a game called What's the Area?
01:03We want to find the area of this shape.
01:07What kind of shape is this?
01:08Yeah, a square.
01:11Remember the area of a shape is the space inside of the shape.
01:16We are going to measure the area of the shape using square units.
01:24So the area of the shape is how much space is inside of it.
01:29So how many square units are inside of this square?
01:34Do you know?
01:36If you don't, just count them up.
01:38Yeah, four.
01:41There are four square units in this square.
01:44Four square units is the area of this square.
01:51Okay that was cool, right?
01:53Let's try figuring out the area of this rectangle.
01:56Just like last time, we are going to measure the area of this rectangle using square units.
02:03Remember the area of a shape is the space inside of the shape.
02:08So how many square units are in this rectangle?

02:18Yeah, there are five square units in this rectangle.

02:32Now we are going to look at an irregular shape.

02:39Just like we did with the others, we are going to measure the area of this shape using

03:15There are twelve square units in this irregular shape.
03:22So far, finding the area has been very easy because we've shown you the inside of the
03:27shape so all you have to do is count how many units are inside.
03:32But what if you can't see the units inside the shape?
03:36What if there are just numbers that you know and you have to come up with the area another
03:41way?
03:45Here is the fun part.
03:46To find the area of a shape, you have to use multiplication.
03:50Yeah, multiplication!
03:56So how do you find the area of a square or a rectangle using multiplication?
04:02All you have to do is multiply the length times the width to get the area.
04:08Here we'll show you.
04:12Let's say we want to find the area of this rectangle.
04:16It is six feet long and one foot wide.
04:20Remember, to find the area of a square or a rectangle, all we have to do is multiply
04:26the length times the width.
04:29The length times the width is the area.
04:32It's just simple multiplication.
04:34So we would write six times one.
04:38Six times one will give us the area of this rectangle.
04:45What is six times one?
04:47Do you know?
04:48Yeah, six times one is six.
04:51Whenever you multiply a number times one, it stays the same.
04:56So our answer is six feet squared.
05:00That little two next to feet means squared.
05:04It tells us that the rectangle has six square feet of space inside.
05:11The area is six feet squared.
05:18Why don't we try another one?
05:20Let's say we want to find the area of this square.
05:24It is three centimeters long on each side.
05:27Remember, to find the area of a square or a rectangle, all we have to do is multiply
05:34the length times the width.
05:37For a square, the length and the width are the same size, aren't they?
05:41Well, the length times the width is the area.
05:45So we just have to multiply.
05:48We would write three times three.
05:51Three times three will give us the area of this square.
05:58What is three times three?

06:02Yeah, three times three is nine.
06:07The area of this square is nine centimeters squared.
06:11That little two next to centimeters means squared.
06:15It tells us that the square has nine square centimeters of space inside.

06:25What about this rectangle?
06:27What is the area of this rectangle?
06:30As you can see, it is four meters long and two meters wide.
06:35Remember, to find the area of a square or a rectangle, all we have to do is multiply
06:41the length times the width.
06:44The length times the width is the area.
06:47It's just simple multiplication.
06:49So we would write four times two.
06:52Four times two will give us the area of this rectangle.

07:06So the area of this rectangle is eight meters squared.

07:15It tells us that the rectangle has eight square meters of space inside.
07:24As we are wrapping up, we want to share two quick tips about area.
07:28As you saw from our examples, when you find the area of a shape, the answer is always
07:34squared.
07:35If we discovered the area of a shape was measured in feet and the answer was 50, our answer
07:41could be written 50 square feet or 50 feet squared.
07:46The answer is always squared because area tells us how much space is inside a shape.
07:53The little two means squared.
07:58The second thing we want to mention is that you have to use a different multiplication
08:03equation to find the area of circles and triangles.
08:07In this video, we just learned the basics of area and how to find the area of rectangles
08:13and squares.
08:15But this is just the beginning and the start of an exciting math world.
08:19There is so much more about area to learn.

08:35The warehouse is shaped like a rectangle so I can just multiply the length times the
08:42width and figure out how many square feet are in this warehouse.
