00:00So, as we mentioned, today we are going to learn about subtraction.
00:07Oh, you know where I am?
00:11Yeah, you know I'm waiting patiently in this waiting room.
00:17Oh man, it has been a while.
00:20Have you ever been in a waiting room before?
00:26Cool!
00:27Yeah, they can be fun, but you do have to be patient, and it's a good time to think.
00:32You know, you can think about all kinds of things.
00:36Like, okay, I have eight cowboy hats.
00:40I know, it's crazy, it's weird. Eight cowboy hats, and they're all the exact same.
00:46The exact same hat. I've got eight of them.
00:50Eight brown cowboy hats.
00:54I mean, what's a guy going to do with eight brown cowboy hats that look the exact same?
01:01What could I possibly do with eight brown cowboy hats that are all the same?
01:07I mean, I should probably give some of them away.
01:12You know, I could give away one of my hats to Bob.
01:15And Cookie might want one. Yeah, she might like a brown cowboy hat, you know.
01:21I could give one to Nancy, you know, just in case she ever got invited to a western party.
01:25And Chomsky, he'd take a hat.
01:29So, as I'm sitting here thinking about my eight hats,
01:33I need to figure out how many hats I'll have left if I give some of them away.
01:40To figure that out, we need to use subtraction.
01:44You see, subtraction is when you take numbers away.
01:48Yeah, very simple. Subtraction is when you take numbers away.
01:54So, I begin with eight hats, and I decide to give one away.
02:00We're going to need to subtract one from eight.
02:04The way we would write this is eight minus one.
02:10Now remember, when we subtract, we're just taking numbers away.
02:15So, eight minus one, we're going to just take one away.
02:20There we go. How many hats do I have left?
02:23What is eight minus one?
02:26If it helps, you can just count how many hats I have left.
02:31What is eight minus one?
02:36Yeah, seven. Eight minus one is seven.
02:41Now I have seven hats.
02:45Remember, subtraction is when you take numbers away.
02:51And, as you might have noticed, we use the minus sign when we write a subtraction problem.
02:57You can see it right there in the middle.
02:59It's just like a dash. That's the minus sign.
03:04So now I have seven hats, but two of my friends stop by,
03:08and I decide, you know what, I know I just have seven hats now,
03:11but I want to give two of them away.
03:15Now, I'm going to be subtracting two hats from my collection.
03:20We would write this by saying seven minus two.
03:27Now let's take away two hats. We'll find out how many we have left.
03:31What a wonderful subtraction problem.
03:35What is seven minus two?
03:37If you need help, you can just count how many hats are left.
03:41What is seven minus two?
03:44Seven minus two equals five. Yeah!
03:48Five hats, and you can even count them.
03:50One, two, three, four, five. There are five hats left.
03:55Seven minus two equals five.
04:00Do you see how fun and simple subtraction is?
04:04Subtraction is when you take numbers away.
04:08So now I have five hats in my collection.
04:12Only five hats left.
04:14But then I meet up with my cousins,
04:16Hooey, Dewey, and Stewie, who want to have hats too,
04:20and I'd love to give them hats.
04:22So I'm going to give three more hats away.
04:26So I have five hats, and we're going to subtract three hats.
04:30We would write that five minus three.
04:36Oh, I love subtraction so much!
04:40Alright, bada bing! There we go.
04:44The three hats are gone.
04:46So, five minus three, how many hats are left?
04:52It's pretty simple, isn't it?
04:58Yeah, five minus three equals two.
05:02Good job! Subtraction is just taking numbers away,
05:06and five minus three leaves you with two.
05:10Now I have just two hats.
05:13We love subtraction.
05:15I mean, subtraction is when you take numbers away.
05:20And why am I in the middle of the road with a shopping cart?
05:28So I have my two hats, and that's fun,
05:31because then the hat has a friend,
05:34and they're like buddies,
05:36and they're like a pair of friends,
05:39and then...
05:42Chomsky came by,
05:44and I said, oh, I'm going to have to do subtraction again.
05:49I'm going to have to subtract again.
05:51Old Chomsky, you know, that Chomsky came by.
05:55I said, I'm going to have to subtract again.
06:00I'm going to have to subtract one more time.
06:06So I have two hats, minus one.
06:11Two minus one.
06:15So we subtract that one, we take that one away,
06:19and how many hats are left?
06:22What is two minus one?
06:29Yep, two minus one equals one.
06:34There's only one hat left.
06:36Which is fine, I mean, you know,
06:38I can only wear one hat at a time,
06:40and it was the same exact hat.
06:43I think about it, subtraction's been good to me.
06:46It's good.
06:47Subtraction is taking numbers away.
06:53Sometimes I do wonder what would have happened
06:56if I didn't give that hat away.
07:00If Hattie still had his friend,
07:03they could have gone to the beach together.
07:06They could have gone to birthday parties together.
07:11But actually, the hat had a better purpose.
07:14To make a friend happy.
07:18So, in this waiting room, all I gotta say is,
07:22thanks, subtraction.
07:24You are pretty awesome.
