00:00Full Immersion Research, Day 1.
00:09Restate my objectives.
00:11I will gain insight into the Gorilla Family Group, not by detached observation, but by
00:17full and active participation.
00:22In order to do so, I must become accepted as a member of the colony.
00:27I must act like a gorilla, think like a gorilla, I must in essence become a gorilla.
00:47I say boys, any chance of stopping for tea soon?
00:51I'm positively pooped.
00:57I've been traveling with the colony for twenty-two minutes now, and I feel powerful, bestial
01:05instincts awakening within me.
01:07I fear I may already be more animal than man.
01:19Would any of you happen to have a needle and thread by chance?
01:22Anyone?
01:23Hurry, dear, hurry.
01:26The colony's juveniles are establishing their social positions, and I have to assert my
01:30dominance.
01:31Oh, honestly, Daddy, at this rate we'll both be running around in loincloths.
01:38Not that there's anything wrong with running around in a loincloth, mind you.
01:42Well, I just wouldn't mind having a fresh change of clothes now and again.
01:46Yes, yes, that would be rather nice.
01:48A dress, maybe?
01:49A sturdy cotton blend certainly suits this climate.
01:51Some decent shoes, and...
01:52Size five and one half, if memory serves me.
01:55Fresh linen soap?
01:57Perfume?
01:58What are the latest hats?
02:06What is that?
02:08It appears we have visitors.
02:18Steady, steady now.
02:21Got it.
02:25They're building something.
02:30That means they're staying.
02:31Who's staying?
02:32Who?
02:33Here.
02:34And why?
02:35We could simply ask them.
02:38Ooh!
02:39Get the gun!
02:49Let's get up.
02:55Come on.
03:02He's trapped.
03:04Nowhere to run, wild man.
03:14Colin, I've got a way!
03:16Surround him, boys.
03:20Give me a hand with these.
03:25Oh, damn!
03:31Get him!
03:32Get him!
03:36Come now.
03:38Shouldn't we all be friends?
03:40We saw movement in the jungle.
03:42Thought they were rhinos.
03:44Rhinos?
03:45Do they look like rhinos to you?
03:47I must apologize for my men.
03:50They are a bit jumpy.
03:52They didn't realize that you were...
03:53So, the stories are true.
03:56You're Tarzan, the savage wild man I've been hearing so much about.
04:01You seem to have us at a disadvantage, sir.
04:03Who are you?
04:05That's easy.
04:07I'm a businessman.
04:09Renard Dumont at your service.
04:13I'm the sole owner and proprietor of Dumont's trading post.
04:17And where, pray tell, is Dumont's trading post?
04:20Why, it's right here.
04:22Or it soon will be.
04:24Here?
04:26But there's no one around for miles.
04:28You're here, aren't you?
04:30And you're certainly not the only people in Africa.
04:32We're not?
04:34Hardly.
04:36Why, cities are popping up all over the coast.
04:38Railroad tracks will soon span the continent.
04:41Hey!
04:43Africa is growing fast.
04:45And I intend to grow along with it.
04:47You mean to say...
04:48I intend to grow along with it.
04:50You mean profit along with it.
04:52But of course!
05:05Cages.
05:07One of the many items I provide.
05:09Do these interest you?
05:16They do.
05:18Tarzan, wait!
05:20You will stay away from the gorillas in this valley.
05:23Some sort of ape lover, is that it?
05:26I am one of them.
05:28My dear Tarzan, I give you my word.
05:31I have no interest in your gorillas.
05:48There.
05:50Now let's put all this unpleasantness behind us, shall we?
05:54Excellent.
05:56Come, Tarzan.
05:58I think it's time we left.
06:00Wait, please.
06:02How about a little something before you go?
06:04My compliments, of course.
06:06No, thank you.
06:08We're doing quite well on our own.
06:10Come now, there must be something you can use.
06:12Canned food, tea, some new clothes, perhaps?
06:15Did you say clothes?
06:16You know, I was suspicious of that Dumont fellow at first,
06:19but I say any man who stocks the latest Paris fashions,
06:22well, he must have a few decent qualities, wouldn't you say?
06:25As long as he stays away from the gorillas.
06:27Hey, I got a question for you.
06:29I've got an answer.
06:31That trading post was built in the rhino herding area, was it not?
06:34I guess.
06:36So they had to clear the rhino herd out of there, am I right?
06:38I'm with you so far.
06:40I didn't see a single rhino the whole time he was there.
06:42Did you?
06:44I did not.
06:45Okay, so, here comes my question.
06:47What happened to the rhino herd?
07:07They're headed right for the gorillas!
07:10And Daddy!
07:15Oh, feeding time, is it, sir?
07:18Very well, very well.
07:20I can best ensure my acceptance into the colony
07:23by proving my worth as a food provider.
07:31Prepare to eat well, my gorilla brethren!
07:45Oh, I don't believe I got a bite.
07:54Victory! Victory!
07:56Rejoice, my fellow gorillas! Rejoice!
08:03Rain!
08:05Oh, dear.
08:09Something I should know about.
08:15Oh, dear.
08:27Is everyone okay?
08:29I think so.
08:31I wish I could say the same for our lunch.
08:38Who invited them?
08:41Perhaps they won't mind if I just grab a little bit of water.
08:45Oh, perhaps not.
08:51Not real big on sharing, are they?
08:54What are they doing here?
08:56What we have here is what we in the scientific field
09:00would call a classic ripple effect.
09:03The trading post is being built here,
09:05which, like a large boulder diverting the path of a river,
09:09has displaced the rhinos from their herding area.
09:12So the rhinos, in turn, have moved into the gorilla territory.
09:15Well, I...
09:18Indeed.
09:20What happens to one species in any contained ecosystem
09:24will inevitably affect other species in the same system.
09:28Look, I don't care about your contained eco-whatchamacallit.
09:32I just got one question, all right?
09:34What are the gorillas supposed to do now?
09:41We'll have to leave.
09:43There's no other way.
09:45But this is our home.
09:47There simply isn't enough food and water here
09:49for both the gorillas and the rhinos.
09:52We'll just move on to a new home like we've done before.
09:57What if I can get the rhinos to go back?
10:00Then I'd be very impressed.
10:04Easy, easy.
10:06Bring it down slow now.
10:13Why, if it isn't Tarzan.
10:15My favorite ape man.
10:18Now, boats will arrive at the dock.
10:20Main inventory will be housed in this room over here.
10:23You must leave.
10:25I beg your pardon?
10:27The rhino herd you drove off has moved into gorilla lands.
10:29I see.
10:31Then you will give the rhinos their land back.
10:33No, I won't.
10:35But the gorillas
10:37are your problem, not mine.
10:40As I told you before,
10:42I have no interest in gorillas,
10:43neither in harming them
10:45nor in helping them.
10:49You know you are a dangerous fellow, Tarzan.
10:52I believe you would be more valuable to me as a friend.
10:56If you stay, we will not be friends.
10:59Perhaps.
11:01But we don't have to be enemies, either.
11:04I found that these
11:06were very effective in driving rhinos away.
11:08I could extend you a line of credit.
11:11Very well.
11:13You know where to find me
11:15if you change your mind.
11:19Use explosives on the rhinos?
11:22That's what Dumont suggested?
11:24To just blow them to smithereens?
11:26Well, I mean,
11:28it's the most barbaric thing I've ever heard.
11:30He called it effective.
11:32Yes, well,
11:34if Mr. Dumont is being so unreasonable
11:36about the whole thing,
11:38perhaps you could just go to the rhinos themselves
11:39and persuade them to leave.
11:41Hmm.
11:43Perhaps I could.
12:09What's going on?
12:11What's he saying?
12:13Tarzan just told him
12:15to lead his herd out of the area.
12:17What did he say?
12:19What did he say?
12:21Well,
12:23I'm not sure what the literal translation would be,
12:25but it's something like...
12:27He said no.
12:33Now Tarzan is trying to reason with him.
12:36Oh, good, excellent.
12:37Diplomacy is always the best policy
12:39in dealing with...
12:54All so much for diplomacy.
12:56Hey, in the jungle,
12:58that is diplomacy.
13:07Oh, yeah.
13:09Who's your daddy?
13:11Who's your daddy's daddy?
13:15Take your herd and leave.
13:17Now.
13:25Tarzan, watch out.
13:30Hey, that's hardly fair.
13:32Yeah, rhinos aren't exactly known
13:34for their sportsmanship.
13:35Tarzan,
13:37are you all right?
13:46I guess
13:48this means the rhinos
13:50stay?
13:51Hey,
13:53I don't think so.
13:55I don't think so.
13:57I don't think so.
13:59I don't think so.
14:01I don't think so.
14:03I don't think so.
14:05And the gorillas leave.
14:15Hold still now.
14:17I don't think anything is broken,
14:19thank heaven.
14:21Of course nothing's broken.
14:23My man Tarzan is like a rock.
14:25Right, buddy?
14:27See, it's all good there.
14:29Tarzan,
14:31we can't stay here any longer.
14:33The family has to leave.
14:35I can fix this.
14:39It's over, Tarzan.
14:41We have to move on.
14:43Then I will lead you.
14:45And what about Jane?
14:47Your place is with her.
14:49She could
14:51travel with us.
14:53And her father?
14:55He could come too.
14:57He's all packed and ready to go.
15:01Shall I
15:03take the lead or just...
15:05They're not gorillas, Tarzan.
15:07You know they can't make it out there with us.
15:10I promised Kerchak I would protect this family.
15:13And you have.
15:15But Jane is the one that really needs you now.
15:18We'll make out on our own.
15:20Here we are, just a few more bandages.
15:24Take care of my son.
15:31We leave in the morning.
15:35All right.
15:37Remember to stay warm
15:39and groom yourself properly.
15:41I can't at least hate how I was asleep at night
15:43because you know how cranky you can be.
15:45Right, all right.
15:47Enough already.
15:49You're making a scene here.
15:51Oh, I'm gonna miss you too, you big lug.
15:52I know you feel just awful
15:54about this, darling.
15:56But you must understand.
15:58You've done everything you could.
16:00No.
16:02But I'm going to.
16:06Excellent.
16:08We should open by the end of the week.
16:10Phew.
16:12I'm going to.
16:14I'm going to.
16:16I'm going to.
16:18I'm going to.
16:20I'm going to.
16:22I'm going to.
16:24You and I have business.
16:26What sort of business?
16:29My credit.
16:31It's still good.
16:33Oh, of course.
16:35What did you have in mind?
16:37This.
16:39An excellent choice, my friend.
16:41That should take care of your little rhino problems.
16:43Hmm?
16:45You understand the ways of man better
16:47each time we meet.
16:49Now let me show you how to use these items.
16:50I mean, we can't have
16:52my very first customer
16:54blowing himself to bits now, can we?
17:00Tarzan?
17:02Tarzan?
17:04Hmm.
17:06Have you seen Tarzan?
17:08Not since he got back
17:10from the trading post.
17:12What was he doing there?
17:14Probably still figuring a way
17:16to get rid of those rhinos.
17:18Explosives?
17:20The rhinos?
17:22Oh my goodness, we have to stop him!
17:50Tarzan!
18:20Tarzan, you don't have to do this!
18:22Yes, I do.
18:45This will be your new home.
18:50Tarzan?
19:00I never doubted you for a minute.
19:12So, perhaps you could give me
19:14some pointers on how to become
19:16more gorilla-like?
19:18Of course, for starters.
19:20Why don't you put some clothes on,
19:22would you?
19:24You're not the loincloth type.
19:26Trust me on this.
19:28But gorillas don't wear clothes
19:30of any sort.
19:32Well, yeah, but we look good.
19:34You, on the other hand,
19:36not so much.
19:38You see where I'm coming from?
19:40Right, I've got it.
19:42Aren't you going to join the fun?
19:44Not just yet.
19:46Oh, come on now.
19:48I've got a lot to celebrate.
19:50Maybe.
19:52But with more and more people
19:54coming to the jungle,
19:56I can't help but wonder.
19:58Wonder what?
20:00How long can it last?
