00:00In October you'll be a guest of honor of mine. Yeah. All right. I appreciate that. I appreciate that. Um, Dave Fleming
00:06Dave Fleming, he's a guest of honor every week on the morning roll. He really is
00:10The hostess of Madagascar. I'm supposed to try to tell him I don't need you associated with these clowns. No, I'm kidding
00:16I'm kidding giants get a big win yesterday went 13 to 2
00:19Fitzgerald who's gonna see him back at the top of the lineup for once and then uh
00:23Blake Snell five innings doing his thing. Hayden Burr's on today on the mound against the brew crew flip. What's happening, man
00:29How you feeling man? I did not travel to the planes. How about that?
00:34I love going there. By the way, that is a that everybody who loves football should go there sometime
00:40It is such a cool place to go watch a game good win for the old cowbears. How about that?
00:45That was fun, you know fly by I don't usually
00:49You know, I don't say oh man, they're cheating. They're calling some bad stuff here
00:52But it did feel like a one-stretch cow was holding out for dear life
00:56And it felt like every single flag when he gets them
01:00Oh the roughing to pat the road the targeting call. I thought was a little suspect. It was pretty weak
01:05Oh, but the uniforms were sweet
01:08Those were even a staffer guy like yourself flip could admit that those cow uniforms were pretty sweet
01:12They that that should be their permanent uniform. Maybe it is. I'm not i'm not that up on it
01:18I haven't called over to cal and said let's talk about your uh
01:22Uniform choices, but I bet I agree. Those look really good. Really good
01:26I love the little blue stripe down the side of the pants. That was it's a
01:30It's a good look for the bears and you know what?
01:33They have a pretty good team like they have a chance
01:36To have I saw the computers today
01:40said that like the espn computers said they have like a five percent chance to make a playoff which
01:47you know
01:49I the fact that the computers are even looking at them is like
01:54Wouldn't that be something if they got themselves in the mix? Well, let's ask you real quick
01:57I'll let you get in here san diego state this saturday night game. That's going to be on the espn
02:02I'm, not sure what flint is calling. So we'll get that at the end of the interview
02:05Did it go down to florida state tallahassee? That's a winnable game. We saw florida state
02:09It didn't miami's coming out here october the 5th the hurricanes last time they were out here. They played at pac bell
02:15That's right in the emerald bowl you and I were both there. Yeah, we're at that game
02:19Jabba best went crazy and then before that I don't know if fliming remembers this but early 90s
02:24Miami came out here and played the bruce neiderland cal team and they put it on the cal bear
02:28So go ahead chaske get in here, uh, dave sunday. All right, uh football was going on
02:33So I don't know how many giants fans were tapped in like I was but I had my eye on the giants and a couple
02:39Of days has gone on since then and so the dust has settled and I saw luciano grab
02:44Fitz his hat and glove and bring it out to him and they they clearly like
02:48I feel like everything is fine, but that play it just didn't sit well with me that day later on and both guys
02:54I thought and there's a pop-up on luciano's side. Fitz is coming over. He says he doesn't hear him
03:00It is a loud environment. I like my second baseman or infielders to be a little more demonstrative
03:04It's tough for even an infielder to see another guy's arm movements or hear them in that situation
03:10They kind of collide ball drops
03:13Matos is right there. No one's covering second base
03:17Kanna's falling asleep to run score and i'm listening to the post game and both guys try to take some onus on it
03:23And now that the dust is settled
03:25What are your thoughts on the luciano fitz play and is there any leftover residue because it feels like everyone's moved on
03:32Yeah, it was not a good look it wasn't um, and it happens
03:37It happens a lot and not I mean, maybe not a lot, but it's not just those two
03:41Uh stuff like that does happen
03:44uh, I didn't like my least favorite part of the play was when the ball dropped everybody just stood there like
03:49uh, you know, you gotta
03:51You gotta have some urgency. Okay, you screw it up. You miscommunicate the ball falls. Don't just stand there like that's you know
03:58That was a sign of probably two things immaturity and frustration
04:03um
04:05and you know, I
04:07Look, I think two things can be true number one what I would have loved to have seen from tyler fitzgerald
04:12Who's clearly established himself as a leader on this team?
04:17As somebody who the giants believe can be a part of the future
04:21I would have loved to have seen tyler after the game. Just say my bad. I I I
04:26I just take even if you don't believe that just you know, be the bigger person there
04:31Yeah, there's clearly, you know, there's clearly some underlying frustration with not just tyler everybody
04:38With marco and the way he's played defensively this year
04:42and I think my guess would be is there was like a cumulative effect of
04:46Not again, you know sort of like that feeling like man
04:50Just making it hard on everybody out there
04:52but you know, but but marco is still so young and doesn't speak english the way that uh,
04:59tyler does and most of these giants do and it's harder for him to
05:03Like all that stuff makes it a little unfair in these scenarios where you're going after the game and sticking a microphone in two players
05:10One is more equipped to to explain himself and defend himself than the other is
05:15uh
05:16I would have loved to have seen tyler. Just just just take it, you know
05:20And I think I think next time he will I think he probably believes the same thing. Um
05:25So
05:26Move on and and hope it doesn't happen again
05:28Yeah, when in doubt take the high road talk to dave fleming here on the river islands guest line
05:32I don't think we've talked to you since matt chapman re-upped with the giants a six-year
05:37151 million dollar deal. I know chaski loves chapman
05:40I've been very impressed with his professionalism without hardy plays and you know what the years we could nitpick and say, yeah six years
05:46No trade calls, uh, you know 151 mil, but you know what?
05:50He's been a really good giant and you have to start somewhere you have to start building pillars here
05:55And that's not a bad guy to have in his dugout for the next five to six years flim
05:59Congrats to matt chapman. But what were your thoughts on the contract decision that he signed last week?
06:04Yeah, I think championship caliber teams don't nitpick and look at I don't look at it that way
06:09They look at this guy's a really good player. He wants to be here. He makes our team better period
06:13he's on our team like make it happen and I think that was what the giants did in this instance as opposed to
06:20Obsessing over maybe the marginal value of every aspect of the deal. Just say this guy
06:28Loves being here. He's had a great year
06:30uh, and we want him here to be an anchor on this team and so i'm thrilled I I
06:35I I haven't told this to matt
06:37But I feel like he owes me a little something because I have spent the whole year just pumping him up
06:44You have the willie beck award winner
06:48Oh my gosh, probably running away with that one
06:50he's so impressed me like I really uh,
06:54you know, and I think I said it to you guys a few weeks ago that I
06:58Thought or maybe I don't know how maybe it was kawakami joe's friend
07:02uh that I was talking to that I said, I thought he was the best giant defensive player that i'd seen and uh,
07:08And I got asked about that a lot like wow, you really think that and I was like, well
07:12I gotta call brandon cropper now and you know, we'll walk him off the ledge
07:17I love brah
07:18Uh, but I just I I just been all that's a rambling way to say. I think mad chapman has been fantastic
07:26And i'm so happy. He's gonna be a part of this team. It's really important to have him around, you know, joe
07:31I was wondering why tim kawakami stiffed me the other night at levi stadium for mother day football
07:35He just walked right past me didn't say a word to me. I thought you guys were buddies. Oh my god
07:40Hey, you know
07:43Thanks for the shot. No, that was great. Hey, you know what though i'm with you on chap i'm
07:47Look, we can nitpick all these different things. He's a good player. He makes them better
07:52I want him leading the charge for a lot of these young players who you reference fitz and luciano
07:58Whether these guys are in the cards long term or not
08:00You gotta have like a david lee type to kind of just set the tone
08:04You need those people in the building and you need those guys on the field and he's one of those guys
08:09To me this is a lot about bob melvin and maybe i'm reading too deep into this
08:13But I I know bob loves matt chapman and I feel like bob's got a lot of influence right now
08:18And he said something that I found to be really interesting
08:21He's talking about the outfield and man
08:23We got a lot of things to to consider and at some point they asked him about you know
08:27The year as a whole and he's like this has been one of the hardest years of my career
08:30i'm thinking wow, like I I know you want to win and
08:34What what do you think he meant by saying it's the hardest part of his career or why do you think it's been the hardest
08:40part of his career
08:41I think because he puts so much like
08:44It's hard to overstate how much it means to bob to be the giants manager
08:49you know for the kid he and he always describes it and he makes me smile when he says it like
08:54Like he got on his bike when he was 12 years old
08:58And just rode up and down the street thinking he might see willie mays coming back from the game in his neighborhood
09:04like
09:05For for bob this job is the culmination of his whole career
09:09So I think you know when the giants went out and they signed all these players and you bring bob in
09:13He his expectation 100 was this is a playoff team
09:18And the fact that it's not going to be a playoff team has really eaten at him
09:21so I think that's what he means as opposed to
09:24Internal strife or other stuff
09:26I think it's more just like the expectation of this job and what it means to him
09:31And how he feels like they come up short and I think he's very determined to help
09:37Make sure that doesn't happen again. What do you think has been the biggest development?
09:42Positively this year for the samsung giants because i've got a few on my head
09:45But you're with the team every day and you know, people aren't happy whatever but there are some positives like what's the most positive thing?
09:53To come out of this year
09:56Um, there have been positives it's been a you know, it's been a disappointing year with a lot of things that have that have been
10:03uh
10:04positive, but I would say the collection of younger players
10:08And and the guys and i'll say that of like now i'm not putting kyle harrison in that bin
10:14Uh, i'm not even putting like matos had a great run. Uh, we still sort of up in the air what he's going to offer
10:19I'm, not putting patrick bailey. I'm saying ramos fitzgerald and birdsong specifically and then some of the bullpen guys, too
10:27like
10:28I think you said it a minute ago. It doesn't have to be that those guys are future superstars. It doesn't have to be
10:35But like that's almost like those guys were not being counted on at all
10:40and you've found a way to accentuate the positive with them and i'm
10:44What I think the giants haven't done a great job of over the last many years
10:50with their young players is finding what they do well and accentuating that as opposed to maybe like
10:56Trying to change certain things about them or pigeonhole them
11:00And I love the fact that ramos fitzgerald
11:03Uh, especially like they're not the prototype sort of farhan players in terms of their profile
11:10They've let them play and they've let them thrive and I think that's you know
11:14Are those guys going to be your all-stars going forward? I mean ramos has already made an all-star team maybe
11:20But can they be solid parts of the giant's future and help you make a better franchise?
11:25Absolutely, they can and I think that to me that's been the biggest positive
11:30those guys from sort of
11:32Totally off the radar to having really good years
11:35Dave fleming here on the morning ross joins us every single week courtesy of the river islands guest line
11:40Uh farhan zaidi, he's been a hot button topic here in the bay area for quite some time now
11:44And obviously you've heard our show. Uh, we've been very critical of farhan zaidi. He's done some good things
11:49I don't want to say everything's been doom and gloom. He's done some really good things
11:53And there's some things that's been left on the table here
11:56flim you're around this team and I don't want you to speak for farhan or anything like that
12:00But what do you think farhan would say about the job?
12:02He's done this season not in totality because I think the farm could be in a better spot
12:07He's been able to bring premium pitchers pitchers to the bay area
12:10But what do you think farhan would say about this team and the job he's done this season?
12:15Well, I i'll say before I answer i'll say I talked to him the other day and uh
12:21Man, this is worn on him big time. Like I I've walked away going. I I hope he's all right
12:26Like he is wearing it big time
12:29um, and it was a reminder for me that all these things that we you and I talk about and we
12:34Throw around like these people who are involved pour their whole selves into this
12:40And look, they get paid
12:43Extremely well, and they they
12:46you know when they
12:48Accept the challenge. They know what's coming. They they know that that's part of the deal, but it doesn't make it easier and
12:55He is just this year has worn him out. I think he's just super super
13:01super disappointed with how things have gone and uh
13:06So, you know, I that doesn't answer your question. I think he would say
13:11Uh, he's really unhappy and things need to be different and I think the thing that most probably has frustrated him
13:21the the thing that he brought up first when I was chatting with him was like
13:25they're a bunch of the veteran players that they were counting on whether it's you know, wilmer and tyro or
13:33I'm, not that's not finger pointing at them. But like there's they've gotten a lot of underperformance from guys
13:38They were just figuring we're going to be solid solid guys
13:42and I think he felt like that undermined the whole beginning of the year and they've been playing catch up and they've never been able to
13:49Get their footing and that the whole thing sort of got
13:52Torpedoed before it could get going and I think that really disappoints him, you know when you load up
13:58Like you do in the offseason like the giants did
14:01And then you get off with such a poor start it throws everybody out of whack and I don't think the giants ever got their balance
14:07Yeah, you know dave we're gonna have a conversation about just like what an organization
14:13Maybe owes its fans right the consumer and and and you owe it to yourself
14:17Obviously because you're you're trying to win this is a business and these you're trying to win championships and whatnot
14:22but there's a lot of niner fans that are really ticked off about maybe the candor of
14:28shanahan and the niners
14:30Disclosing the mcafree injury and how they waited and I know there's a fantasy element that's baked into this
14:36Bonte has he learns things about the warriors and he doesn't bring all of it to air
14:40And there's you know
14:42like a tug and pull of like how much do I let everyone know that I know and
14:45I don't want to betray trusts flims in that same spot
14:49And that's why I want to ask him like as someone who works for these teams
14:54How difficult is it for the teams to be 100%?
14:57Candid while also not, you know giving up that gamesmanship for the other teams that you're going up against like
15:04Do you get where i'm going with this like I think it's really difficult and I understand why fans get angry
15:08But I also see where the teams fall down on this. So when there's like an injury
15:12How honest can they be?
15:15Yeah, it's uh, it's a hard thing. Uh, and and I actually I think farhan just specifically farhan
15:23Is one of the most when you guys?
15:25Like, you know, I don't know if he maybe only goes on on the other station or whatever
15:29I don't know what his deal is, but like when you listen to him talk
15:34And he doesn't talk that often and I wish he talked more. I think one thing, you know that i've said to farhan is like
15:40You know, I think it would benefit him to be out there a little more just communicate a little more with giants fans
15:47uh, because they are desperate to hear from
15:50Your your leadership like fans care. They want to hear from these guys
15:55But they also like to your point. They want to hear
15:58The truth, uh, and I think farhan is really good at that like farhan speaks the truth when he says something
16:05don't
16:06Don't think he's like dodging you or sending you down the wrong path
16:10He means what he says like as much as any sports executive that i've been around
16:14um
16:15So I think he's actually pretty forthcoming about how he feels and how players are doing
16:20It's always going to be a tricky balance always it's tougher in football
16:24You know, I think football is probably the ultimate one where
16:28You know game planning and things change based on one player being in there and there's so much on every single game
16:34uh
16:36but yeah, that was a bad look for the niners like and and
16:39You know, I I feel terrible for the kid jordan mason who played so well and now i'm sure
16:44You know, i'm sure he's feeling the heat about because his comment is the one that really set it all off
16:50Um, hey, I knew friday or I found out friday I was starting like
16:54you know that like
16:56uh
16:57That that's the whole key to the whole thing
17:00Uh, and I feel terrible for him because he should be celebrated for how great he played
17:04It's a it's a hard part of this whole thing. No, there's no doubt about that. Flynn. Where are you at this week?
17:08Are you going to be doing cal san diego state? You're going to stay local?
17:11What's uh, what's on deck this weekend, uh in terms of college football?
17:15Yep, i'm bringing my fast track and i'm driving across the bay bridge. That's my that's my gig saturday night. I love that
17:21I love that. It's a good game too. And by the way for new teams going to the pack 12
17:25Maybe callous staffer will be back in the pack 12 one day. No, seriously. We got six teams now flip. What's your thoughts on that?
17:32Yeah, I I mean well and the one san diego state that we have this weekend
17:35That's pretty big news like they're they're one of those teams. I mean, I thought it the pack 12
17:41the the old pack 12
17:44It's mind-boggling
17:46how badly they screwed all this up like it's just like
17:50There will be there will be case studies on you want to know how you ruin an organization do what this group did
17:58uh, and
17:59So like if they just done this a while ago
18:03Because these schools those those schools are good programs and I actually personally think for cal and stanford
18:11I know the money might not equal out long term, but short term it probably would
18:16Uh, it's cal and stanford with oregon state and washington state and san diego state and boise state and fresno state
18:23I I think that's better than what they've got going now better for everybody more healthy
18:28Just a better thing. Uh
18:30But I don't think they can unspool now. They've committed to the acc. I don't know how
18:35That happened so who knows but i'm glad for because i'm really pulling for for those programs that are left out here to survive
18:44um
18:45So i'm it's I think it's good news. I don't know what the next step is
18:48But I think it's short term. It's it's a good positive step. Absolutely. Have a good call tonight
18:54Thank you some dirt song. Let's see if he can bounce back man and finish his season strong
18:58Thanks so much flim and have a great call saturday. We'll be listening to cal in san diego state this saturday in the meantime
19:03Of course giant space wall. Thanks flim. We'll talk to you next week
19:06Who who thought that I was going to be the voice of the golden bears their fans are probably just like can we please get?
19:12Please get somebody else over here
19:14No, they love you. You're a good luck charm for them. You went down to the plains got a win in auburn
19:19Come on now somewhere cc what that's bear territory flint somewhere roxy bernstein's going
19:25Please explain
19:27Yeah, yeah, he's got a he's got a dartboard with my face
19:31In the middle of it
19:32See you, buddy
19:34See you guys. All right
19:36Guest slide, uh 95 70 game. Let me ask you the same question. I asked him about that essentially
19:43What do the 49ers owe their fans when it comes to disclosing these injuries
19:48I'm, not outraged. I understand there's a gambling element. I understand there's a fantasy football element
19:53There's a gamesmanship element right of of games planning and all that. Um
19:59I'm, just curious what like what is reasonable to expect?
20:04I don't expect and maybe i'm too deep in the weeds for people at podiums to give me 100
20:09percent of the truth 100 percent of the time
20:11I don't think in terms of injuries disclosing injuries because it's a personal thing and you know
20:16We got the whole hippo laws, right? You got all that
20:20But I understand a football team not disclosing the information
20:24You know because one if you do disclose it you're going to freak the fair base out
