00:02Joining us on the River Islands guest line.
00:04He's going to be out in town this Saturday.
00:06We'll explain in just a second.
00:08Jake Peavy joining us on the River Islands guest line.
00:10All guests on 95.7 The Game appear on the River Islands guest line.
00:13This is the time for you to discover the islands.
00:15River Islands in Lathrop.
00:17Jake, what is happening, my man?
00:192014 World Series champ.
00:21What's going on, Jake? Good morning.
00:23Hey, good morning, baby. The champs in the building, baby.
00:25The champs in the building.
00:27We're headed to town. Coming in hot.
00:29You're coming in hot, man.
00:31Yes, I've been doing some TV work.
00:33Still in the game, getting a call and being an analyst.
00:35So I've been doing some of that.
00:37But I've got a huge smile on my face coming west.
00:40Don't care about the travel in front of me.
00:43Because some good times are to come this weekend.
00:46A lot of familiar faces.
00:48Look, when you get to remember the special times, man,
00:51and get to do that in the same room together, it's going to be fun.
00:55No, it's going to be fun.
00:57We're going to be in town.
00:58And we know why.
00:59August Hall, San Francisco, it's going down.
01:01And it's going to benefit the Giants Community Fund and Foundation.
01:05And Flanders is going to be in the building.
01:07Tim Flannery, Jackie Green, John Mullow.
01:09You're going down, man.
01:10You guys are going to be performing Saturday night
01:12after being celebrated at the yard at Oracle Park,
01:15remember, in the 2014 team.
01:17That's right.
01:18I'm dragging all my teammates over, too.
01:20And before the music goes down, I'm going to have all those guys.
01:25I can call their name and say something.
01:28I've been digging in the 14 runs just trying to remember everybody's moment.
01:32Because it takes an army.
01:34And so, I'm going to kind of one-by-one bring the 14 members that make it over,
01:39which I believe a good amount are.
01:43And then I'm going to bring them out on stage.
01:45And we're going to banter and BS around.
01:47I'm going to have the clubhouse guys on stage.
01:49I'm going to have the trainers.
01:50And so, with microphones to try to get some stories out
01:53that will be worth the Giants fans' memories.
01:55And then you just mentioned the music.
01:57The music.
01:58With Jackie and Jennifer and, like you said, Mullow and Kevin Scott.
02:04Kevin Scott.
02:05$35, too.
02:07Hey, Jake, $35 gets you in the door, Saski.
02:10They'll see Jake out there performing.
02:12Well, that's right.
02:13Look, we wanted to make it accessible.
02:17There's some VIP stuff that you can get a little bit more access in that.
02:20But $35, you're going to feel like a VIP the August haul.
02:24I wasn't crazy familiar with the venue until just recently.
02:27But what a beautiful room and people.
02:29And they're excited.
02:30The one thing I love, too, is coming to San Francisco and getting to play music.
02:34I do get to do this in other towns.
02:36And we do it for charity.
02:38And we just do it in the name of fun and bringing people together.
02:43But coming to San Francisco, the people appreciate the music in a different way.
02:47They listen.
02:48They dance.
02:49They come for the fun of it and the smiles.
02:52And, man, I can't wait.
02:54All this Bama talk.
02:55I'm just curious.
02:58You a little worried?
02:59Are you a Bama fan?
03:00You a little worried with no Saban?
03:02I am worried.
03:03I am worried.
03:04Yes.
03:05Look, well, I would just say this.
03:08I'm proud to be from Alabama.
03:10So much of what I grew into being who I am today represents some of this place.
03:17It's been a hard place to call home being a Californian for most of my career and most of my life.
03:23I haven't always linked up with some of the people in charge or some of our decision makers.
03:28And that's been a very tough thing.
03:30But, you know, I think that's with everywhere.
03:32I say I am from Alabama proudly and would never run from that.
03:37But also, like I said, I've lived most of my adult life in California.
03:41Spending time now back up on the East Coast in New York with the MLB offices and network.
03:46And so I'm a very open-minded and inclusive person.
03:52And I'll tell you what, San Francisco brought the best out in me in those ways.
03:56Well, look, I am obviously a lifelong Giants fan.
03:59And when you were with the Padres, everyone recognized, like, you were a stud.
04:03Like, you just were.
04:04You were an absolute stud.
04:06I remember you going to the Sox and you win the World Series.
04:09You and Johnny Lesta.
04:11And you end up being, like, a deadline deal to the Giants.
04:15But here's the thing I want to know about because I'm superstitious.
04:17Some pitchers are very superstitious, a lot of baseball players in general.
04:21You made the switch from 43, which was Kane's old number, to 22 that year.
04:26Because I know 44 was your number with the Padres for the longest time.
04:29Wow, that's attention to detail.
04:31I like it.
04:32Well, because 22 is Will Clark's number, right?
04:34When you got it, it felt appropriate because you were a great ball player.
04:38And so, did that honestly, like, was that something that you were thinking about
04:42or is that something stupid that the fans think about?
04:44Oh, no, man.
04:46It's so deep.
04:47You know, we don't have time for it all.
04:49But here's the gist of it.
04:50I wore 22 because it was my father's number.
04:53All the way up through youth sports and in high school, 22 was kind of our family number.
04:58My brother, who played behind me in college and a great high school player too,
05:02he wore 22.
05:03Family number, right?
05:04We loved it and respected it.
05:06All the way through the minor leagues.
05:08I'm from Mobile, Alabama.
05:10We have five Hall of Famers.
05:12Two of them are named Willie McCovey, number 44, retired in San Francisco,
05:18and Hank Aarons from Mobile, Alabama, also number 44.
05:22When I get to the big leagues, 44 is hanging in my locker.
05:26And, guys, I can't even explain to you what I get chills telling you
05:30over my whole body saying that out loud.
05:33And so to get to wear that number, I never in ever playing career mentioned that
05:38Willie or Hank wore that number and was from my hometown.
05:41If it got brought up, I just say I got given it and I wear it in deep respect
05:46but never put my name in that category.
05:48But just being where I'm from and having the respect for those men,
05:52I wore 44 as proudly as I could ever wear it
05:55and being where they were from and trying to carry the torch
05:58and, again, trying to understand what those guys went through
06:01and bear some of that cross moving forward.
06:04Wow, that's awesome.
06:06Now I get to San Francisco and I can't wear 44.
06:09And Dan Uggla was on the team.
06:11He had the eye problems.
06:14Right, and so I pitched to my first game or two in 43
06:19while Dan Uggla was on the team that we end up releasing Dan
06:22and 22 was available and I needed it.
06:25And I don't know if you go back and look at the numbers.
06:282014, when I go back to number 22, my best statistical run for two months,
06:34August and September, was in that jersey with U Giants
06:37and getting a chance to compete for a title.
06:40That's unbelievable.
06:41Jake Peavy here on the River Islands guest line.
06:43When you're going down that rabbit hole of 2014 or whatnot,
06:46what are the moments that jumped out to you the most, Jake,
06:48during that 2014 run and winning the World Series,
06:51your second straight World Series, that is?
06:53Well, come to the August Hall and we're going to take you deep
06:55within those walls.
06:57But here's what has to be said in this moment for the world to hear.
07:01You cannot forget what Madison Bumgarner did for the city of San Francisco
07:04for Giant fans.
07:06It was an extraordinary effort that we may probably never see again
07:11in our lifetime.
07:12But when you think about over the course of a series to win game one,
07:16to win game five in complete fashion and take the pressure off me,
07:21Voguey, way late in our career trying to figure out how we were going to get
07:24it done against the best teams in the land.
07:27But Bum getting that ball in game seven and throwing those five innings
07:31is something that needs to be ingrained and that story needs to be told
07:35by the ones who weren't there.
07:37Because it's truly extraordinary.
07:41I don't know that many organizations, coaches, credit Bochy and them,
07:45even let their prized possession go out and try to do this.
07:50But for Bum to be so willing to love for his teammates, Bum, think about that.
07:55Nothing in common really from where he's from and the city he was thrust into,
07:59but love the Giants.
08:01And, man, what an effort.
08:04Single-handedly almost delivered us a championship.
08:07So much joy.
08:08It's crazy.
08:09That team has so many characters.
08:12You and Huddy, you're representing two great gunslingers.
08:16Mad Bum.
08:17I love Voguey, everything he represented.
08:20And just some great characters.
08:21Obviously Sergio Romo and all those guys.
08:23Everybody forgets about the Michael Morse home run.
08:26So, to me, that's one of my favorite moments of all time.
08:29I think it was game five.
08:30He's pitching for Bum Garner.
08:32That home run where he rips it down the line.
08:35I mean, he looked like a WWE character.
08:37He went completely psycho.
08:39I love Michael Morse.
08:40He went insane.
08:41As he should have been.
08:42Well, look, hey, our good buddy Mikey Morse is completely psycho on a good day.
08:47I say that because I'm right there with him.
08:50But, look, think about this.
08:54Game-winning hit in game seven of the World Series belongs to Mike Morse.
08:59Opposite field single that gives us the lead that wins a world championship.
09:05On the road for the first time in 50 years.
09:07I tell you this.
09:08This is a side note.
09:09Our political views are all over the map.
09:11And you see, like, winning a championship takes putting your ego
09:16and all of that stuff aside and caring about the job at hand.
09:20And we did that.
09:21And Boach and that coaching staff just got it out of us.
09:24And Fabian did as well.
09:26It's killing me because I don't really keep up with Mikey too much,
09:31but love him in this way.
09:33I want to give him a mic so badly on Saturday night,
09:35but then I'm starting to hear, oh, God,
09:37have you seen some of what he's posted on social media and his political views?
09:41And I don't think it matches the vibe of where we will be.
09:44Hey, you know what, Jake?
09:47Hey, Jake, I respect that so much.
09:51That's so real.
09:52That's the shit I'm dealing with on the back end.
09:55Oh, man.
09:57Hey, real quick.
09:58I got to ask you about Bruce Boachie.
10:00Bruce Boachie, you played with him down in San Diego.
10:02What gave him that magic touch as a manager?
10:05And especially in 2014, what gave him that magic touch with the bullpen?
10:09Well, I mean, gosh.
10:12Just the communication, the people skills.
10:15It's what makes anybody a good leader.
10:17They communicate with the people around them,
10:19and you're certainly a chain of command in the people under him.
10:25Look, he rode hard.
10:27He wore those coaches out.
10:28I mean, asked more out of them than any other manager that they had ever coached for.
10:33It wasn't an easy plan for Boach.
10:35Boach demanded professionalism and just the small things,
10:40be on time.
10:41It was the most important thing to Boach.
10:43Be a professional and be on time.
10:45Let's start there.
10:46And, you know, you just wouldn't think this cast of characters,
10:50like a Mikey Morris, like JP, Sergio Romo.
10:53You know, we certainly had our in-line guys with Buster and Crawl and Belt
10:56and pretty straightforward guys.
10:59But we had loose cannons, and then you go back to those other teams,
11:02DeRosa and Scudero and Pat Burrell, Cody Ross's.
11:06You know, he believes in the veteran,
11:08that grease that you were talking about, Bogey and Huddy.
11:10He believes in having that around and leaning on some of that experience,
11:13but he communicates.
11:15And then, you know, he got allowed what managers in today's game really don't,
11:20and that's put guys in spots that he believes them best in,
11:25no matter what the analytics or right, left, match-ups said.
11:28And, you know, Cody Ross doesn't get those at-bats for Roy Halladay,
11:32if it's any other manager, any other team.
11:34It's the Dodgers, you know what I mean?
11:36And so Bogey is allowed to, he's a gambler.
11:39He goes on field.
11:41All right, Jake, I got to ask the million-dollar question
11:44that I feel like is still not being asked enough.
11:46Are you sending Alex Gordon in that situation?
11:49I know it's Crawford in short left-center field there.
11:52That team had a lot of speed, too.
11:54They had Lorenzo Cain and Dyson.
11:56That's right.
11:57I didn't think they were going to get another hit against Bumgarner,
12:00and I probably would have sent him knowing how great of an arm Crawford's got.
12:05But as Juan Perez is booting that ball, we're all thinking the same thing.
12:08Like, oh, my God, is this really happening?
12:12Do you send him in that situation, game seven, two outs in the ninth?
12:17No, you can't make that last out at home right there, I don't think.
12:20You know, not take the bat out of Salvador Perez's hands.
12:23Because, look, the only, here's, Salvi Perez was the only guy
12:27he homered in game one off Bumgarner.
12:29That's true.
12:30And so when you think about that situation,
12:34Brandon Crawford, that pick, is the most important pick
12:37of his San Francisco Goal Glove career, no doubt.
12:40I'm certainly glad they didn't send him.
12:42Look, it was meant to be.
12:44It should be noted how good that Kansas City team was that we beat somehow.
12:51They went back and did it again in 15.
12:53They were a run away from winning back-to-back World Series.
12:57That's how good they were.
12:59You know, Jake, did you go to the Rose Bowl, by the way?
13:01You brought up the Alabama Crimson Tide.
13:03Did you go to Savings' last game there at the Rose Bowl against Michigan?
13:06You know what? I did not.
13:08No.
13:09Well, I just, I did.
13:11I lost a lot of money that day.
13:13I lost a lot of money buying, spending on a ticket.
13:16I bet on them, but before I walked into the Rose Bowl,
13:19they went up 7-0, and I lied back to hell.
13:21I said, there's no way Savings is losing this.
13:23It was a great game.
13:24I walked out happy.
13:25But, boy, I'm kind of with you, man.
13:27I'm still pained by that.
13:28I'm scarred by that game.
13:29Well, it cost me some money, too.
13:31Alabama, I'll tell you, for about the last 10 years,
13:35up until that game, about the last 10 years,
13:37Alabama's been an ATM machine.
13:39Yep.
13:40You're not lying.
13:41They can't make the spread high enough.
13:42And you get scared to lay the points, but Alabama and Nick Saban,
13:47man, what a dynasty.
13:49You know, I'll tell you, when I won my first one,
13:51I went on College Game Day in Tuscaloosa,
13:53first time I ever met Nick Saban.
13:55It was this day, and he told me congratulations.
13:58And I said, you got anything for me, buddy, other than that?
14:02And he goes, yeah.
14:03He goes, good luck staying on top.
14:05He goes, now the work begins.
14:06He goes, everybody, it's easy, and almost everybody can get to the top.
14:09Oh, man.
14:10Trying to stay there is the key.
14:12And so, look, that was motivation enough to come to San Francisco
14:16with Bruce Bochy, with Buster Posey, Hunter Pence, Pablo Sandoval.
14:20We mentioned Baumgardner and a host of others
14:23and pull it together for two straight years was pretty impressive.
14:26He's not lying.
14:27They were an ATM machine.
14:29They were underdogs in a Rose Bowl, too.
14:31I was like, this is free money.
14:33If you had to pick the one moment, right, the one moment from that 14 team,
14:37because, I mean, the wild card game was wild.
14:40The 18-inning game was absolutely insane.
14:43We obviously talked about the Michael Morris home run,
14:45the Ichiro home run, the Game 7.
14:47I mean, we almost had a Game 7 with a play at the plate to decide it
14:52for the World Series.
14:53Baumgardner coming out like Paul Bunyan.
14:55Like, what's the one thing that maybe I'm not bringing up here
14:58from that run that you kind of go back to
15:01or you and your guys talk about?
15:03Well, I talked around it.
15:04And, look, I love how into this you guys are
15:07and appreciate what it took to pull it all together
15:11and just was in the run.
15:12I believe our team came together and we won the World Series
15:15and was able to make that run.
15:17And we're together with our coaching staff
15:19on down through the belief in the players.
15:21This night in L.A., it was long before the playoffs started.
15:24It was a game that Zack Greinke and Baumgardner started in L.A.
15:29And something in this game happened that we lost.
15:32And we had to walk below and get in that clubhouse.
15:36And Boach had to answer some severe questions
15:39on what the hell he was doing managing this game.
15:42But we knew at this point in time that we were together
15:45and Boach had our back.
15:47And here's what happened.
15:48Baumgardner gives up.
15:50Zack Greinke's the best in the land.
15:51Him and Baumgardner, you can't ask for a better matchup in Dodger Stadium.
15:55And then we have to win
15:56or I'm pretty sure the Dodgers clinched the division.
15:58They're going to celebrate in our face, right?
16:00And so Baumgardner goes out after Greinke goes one, two, three.
16:05And KK Hernandez leads off the game with a home run.
16:07Dodger Stadium's going crazy.
16:09Won nothing, right?
16:10Ah, God.
16:11He could hit nobody.
16:12He always killed us.
16:13Baumgardner, he could.
16:14Always killed us.
16:15I know.
16:16And so now the next pitch or two goes up under Puig's feet.
16:20He's flipped up.
16:21Oh, yeah.
16:22Now Baumgardner's throwing his glove telling Puig to come on.
16:25I'd rather fight you than pitch against the Dodgers anyway.
16:27Right?
16:28It's nuts.
16:29Bench is clear.
16:30Now we go back to our dugouts.
16:32J.T. Turner hits another pitch or two in the bleachers.
16:36It's 3-0 Dodgers.
16:38We've got our tails tucked.
16:39Dodger Stadium's going crazy.
16:41They're talking trash in our ear, right?
16:43It's not good for the Giants team right now.
16:46I promise you I was on it.
16:48Baumgardner now gets out of this inning and flips the whole script.
16:52This is how tough and how bad this dude was.
16:54Came in and said, no more.
16:56Don't worry about that.
16:57We're going to scratch and claw.
16:58And they ain't getting no more.
17:00Don't you worry.
17:01And that's exactly what happened.
17:03Now fast forward to the bottom, excuse me, top of the fifth.
17:06Baumgardner himself hits a slider over the left center field wall.
17:11It's 3-2.
17:13And he's dealing, giving up no more.
17:16Now he finishes the seventh inning of this game 3-2.
17:20Both starters are dealing.
17:22Baumgardner is due up, I want to say, second in this inning.
17:25The top of the eighth.
17:26We're five outs away.
17:27Grinke's still on the mound.
17:29We're going to the bench.
17:30We've got Ishikawa, our left-hander, and Boach has to hit.
17:33We're one swing away against Zach Grinke,
17:36and you have to hit a lefty on your bench with one out in the eighth,
17:39five outs away from the game.
17:42Baumgardner means that's not going to happen.
17:44And he's like, I'm hitting, bro.
17:46I don't know if you've been watching the game, but I'm hitting.
17:48And him and Boach and Rags is on the phone with the pen
17:52trying to figure out who's –
17:53Boach is going, I know, Baum, I know.
17:57Baumgardner says, you're not talking to me like you know.
18:01And it got Boach's attention.
18:03And Boach kind of looked around the dugout.
18:06We're all sitting here watching this go down.
18:08I was like, hey, man, he's got a point, Boach.
18:11Might as well let him hit.
18:12You guys want this to go down.
18:14And Baumgardner hit in the top of the eighth.
18:18Had that at bat.
18:19It was amazing at bat with the 3-2, but he struck out.
18:21And now he went out in the bottom of the eighth
18:24because now he's certainly got a pitch, and he doesn't even get it out.
18:27And that's give up Holmers.
18:28And Boach has to go get him.
18:31Now answer mad questions.
18:33And Boach walked through that clubhouse and said, don't worry.
18:35That's the way we wanted it to go down, boys.
18:37I'll take all this heat.
18:39I'll talk the saves away.
18:40Don't worry.
18:41I got it.
18:42And at that point in time, we watched the Dodgers celebrate,
18:45but we were down deep.
18:47And that moment, I'm telling you guys, I believe with all my heart,
18:51that moment we were together in a way that it takes to run the gauntlet
18:55that we then soon ran.
18:57Had to get in after that, but then run the gauntlet.
18:59It's a great story.
19:00Man, you got me fired.
19:02Can you speak to the team when they come back?
19:04Can you be like our life coach?
19:05They don't need to be.
19:06Look, they've got them going.
19:07This team is going.
19:09We just got an uphill battle to figure out how we're getting in.
19:13But nobody wants us if we get in.
19:15Nobody wants us.
19:16You believe that?
19:17You believe that to the core?
19:18Because you said that a couple weeks ago,
19:19that you believe they're more talented than that 2014 team.
19:22They are.
19:23Look, we didn't have those horses.
19:25They got the top two Cy Young Award winners on the team.
19:30You know, our guy Logan Webb threw 216,
19:3314 innings last year and finished second behind him.
19:35Who wants those two?
19:36They're better than Wheeler and Nola.
19:38Like, I love you, but they're stuff.
19:40Like, they match up with that.
19:42And then you talk about Robbie Ray versus Ranger Suarez.
19:45Okay.
19:46Like, we're as good as anybody in the league at this point in time.
19:49With Jordan Hicks giving it to Duvall.
19:51So, you know, I believe that.
19:53And I believe in Bob Melvin and Matt Williams and Pat Burrell
19:57and that spirit back around.
19:59So, I like what the Giants have got going.
20:01We just played ourselves in a corner.
20:03Jake, I'm sure you've seen the online video that circulates every couple months.
20:08It's one of my favorites.
20:09Where you're, like, turning your head.
20:11You throw a pitch.
20:12You turn your head to talk to somebody.
20:14I don't know who you're talking to.
20:15And Posey just loops one back to you.
20:18And your glove happens to be up on your left-hand side.
20:21And it goes right into the glove without you even watching or noticing.
20:25Do you know what I'm talking about?
20:27Absolutely.
20:28As only Buster could do.
20:30Buster's golden touch as only any other catcher fires it off your skull.
20:35Buster just had the golden touch in life.
20:39And everything he touches kind of went good.
20:42Rightfully so.
20:44But, yeah, look, I laugh about my hair.
20:47Me and Crawford, you know, had a deal.
20:49And I was growing my hair.
20:50I didn't cut my hair from the time I got out there at 14, you know,
20:53until the time I left.
20:55And me and Crawford had a cool thing from 14 on there.
21:01So I laugh about that.
21:02And then I laugh at just how late I was in my career.
21:05And I'm giving the third base coach, or, excuse me, umpire,
21:09everything I had because I'm wanting that check, please,
21:12because I needed it, boys.
21:15Check, baby.
21:16So you're going to have that mic on Saturday.
21:17Fans are going to be interested.
21:19You're going to have that microphone on Saturday at Oracle Park?
21:22Yeah, and, you know,
21:23I'm not sure that Giants has got a cool pre-game ceremony for all of us
21:27there.
21:28You know, you're going to get these stories.
21:30I'm going to be poking and prodding, like I said,
21:32coaching staff to clubhouse staff to current and former players.
21:36Just having fun.
21:37And if you buy a ticket and come out,
21:38I want you to have a one-on-one experience and get a story that's not
21:42going to get told anywhere else.
21:43Jake, who's the guy you got to identify?
21:46Who's the guy that you're going to – you haven't talked to,
21:48you haven't texted,
21:49but you're going to see him on Saturday and you're going to make your way
21:51over immediately.
21:53Buster Posey.
21:54Yeah, well, because here's why.
21:56Me and Buster text and stay in contact, but I haven't asked.
21:59Buster doesn't do really public appearances.
22:01He certainly doesn't speak a whole lot or do camera stuff,
22:04but I'm going straight to Buster when I see him and say,
22:06hey, I need you Saturday night, buddy.
22:08You are now the owner of the San Francisco Giants.
22:12You're my friend.
22:14He'll help us raise money for the Giants Foundation,
22:16the community fund.
22:19I need you to support the Giants community fund ownership.
22:23I'm going to have some fun with our owner, Buster Posey, now.

22:46Going to be a great time, and it benefits the Giants community fund.
22:49Jake, thanks so much for the time.
22:50Thanks so much for still being part of our community
22:53and benefiting the Giants community fund, man.
22:55Good stuff.
22:56We can't wait to see you Saturday.
22:57I appreciate it.
22:58Look, the San Francisco community has taken this Alabama boy in
23:01as one of their own, and you have no idea how much it means.
23:04We're going to try to share that and show it back on Saturday.
23:06I appreciate you boys very much.
23:08Absolutely.
23:09You too, Jake.
23:10Take care, man.
23:11We'll see him Saturday night.
23:12Jake Peavy, two-time World Series champion.
23:14He's something else, man.
23:16You know, when you watch him,
23:17I don't know how you felt when he was with the Padres,
23:20and he's winning Cy Young's with the Padres.
23:21I thought he was a badass.
