02:02And when you do that, good things happen.

02:22He's a pass-first point guard.

03:13But if he needs to make plays, that's when he's going to have to obviously make plays.

05:07And this is what you get, 32 points on the board without Christian McCaffrey.
05:13And I don't think McCaffrey's playing this Sunday, right?
05:17But with that said, you still watch him grow.
05:21And you're like, okay, he's without Hornacek.
05:23He's without Russell.
05:24And he's still getting it done, man.
05:26Yeah, I mean...
05:27He beat Aaron Rodgers.
05:28And I know Aaron Rodgers hadn't played in 22 months coming off injury.
05:31But you're right.
05:32I hyped the Jets just like a lot of people.
05:34But they were not, like Rob said from Sam Bruno, a playoff team.
05:38But I don't give a damn, Stiney.
05:40If you would have told me McCaffrey wasn't playing a week before this game,
05:44I would have probably gave the advantage to the Jets
05:46because I was so drunk on what they were supposed to be.
05:49Well, when I talked about Purdy playing without a weapon
05:53or without weapons, obviously McCaffrey's a weapon.
05:57But I had no idea that the guy who would step into his place
06:01was almost every bit the weapon that McCaffrey was.
06:05So to me, Jordan Mason filled in to the extent that
06:12he was a weapon, obviously, back there.
06:15Now what's going to happen when the 49ers can't run the ball
06:18like they ran it against the Jets?
06:20It's going to happen.
06:21It's going to happen.
06:22That's what we're going to have to see.
06:24But I don't see Brock Purdy losing you many football games.

06:38Here's the thing, though, and I don't know how this is going to factor into it
06:43or not, but the stats, and I get it, they're just stats.
06:50The stats are just ho-hum.
06:53If he has 8-10 games like this, his numbers aren't going to be off the charts.

07:17as high as any quarterback gets paid, even though the numbers won't be as good.

07:28But the highlights and the things you say,
07:30I fall in love with, the flash and the sizzle and pizzazz,
07:35it's about his win-loss record.
07:37Well, then you could say, well, Jimmy should have gotten.

07:43Because the eye test is telling you Brock is throwing the ball down the field.

07:48Then he's your guy, you hope, for the next century.

08:01and Purdy will eventually get paid because he wins.

09:38All last season, my sons and I were watching the football games going,
09:42why doesn't he give McCaffrey a break?

09:45It was McCaffrey right, McCaffrey left, McCaffrey up the middle.

09:50And now here we are because of Kyle Shanahan, his practices.
09:55He's a great coach, but you say he doesn't coach scared, Stiney.

10:00He doesn't have any faith in his backup players.
10:04He didn't have any faith in them last year,
10:07and now we got McCaffrey hurt, and he'll get, mark my words,

10:13The way he uses them is not smart.

10:19not to be putting behind the line of scrimmage like a halfback.

10:27And Trey Lance wasn't a fullback, but that's what he tried to make him.

10:34Shanahan's a great coach, but he's also a victim of his own self.

10:42I don't like the way he does these things.

10:46It makes no sense to me.
10:48You know when you have players that are important to you,
10:51you want them to be available.
10:53Debo's not going to be available.
10:54He's susceptible to injury himself.
10:57How's he going to be available when he's going to get hurt playing a running back?

11:03He's a great coach, but he drives me nuts on occasion.

11:11To me, this is the love and hate right there in one call,
11:15just our love and disappointment.
11:18When I say he doesn't coach scared,
11:21I meant that he doesn't care about running a guy 30 times if that's the recipe.
11:27He thinks that will bear fruit for him.
11:32I didn't mean it in the context of aggressive or non-aggressive play calling.
11:38But here's the way I look at Shanahan and that.
11:42I really believe Shanahan, for the most part, coaches to win every game.
11:50He is not overly concerned about workload
11:55because I think it's got a lot to do with his dad,
11:59and that's just the way he views football and football players.
12:02You play them, and if they get hurt, then the next guy's got to step up.
12:07I think it's similar to Steve Kerr with the young players.
12:11For 10 years, we've heard about Steve Kerr doesn't like to play young players.
12:17He prefers veterans.
12:18That's a fact, I think, at this point, after we've watched Kerr coach for 10 years.
12:25He's got to lean to the veterans.
12:27I think Kyle Shanahan, in much the same way,
12:29and I get it, you can criticize him for it,
12:33but I think Shanahan, in much the same way,
12:36coaches like he's incapable of going into a game saying,
12:43You know what? Okay, we got Minnesota this weekend.
12:47We're better than them.
12:49We should be able to beat them by a couple scores,
12:52so I'm going to head into this game thinking about getting some players some rest
12:58or limiting their time.
12:59I just don't think that's what he does.
13:02I think he's saying, I'm going to develop a game plan
13:06to try to beat the Minnesota Vikings as badly as we can,
13:10and then if we get up three scores and it's the fourth quarter,
13:13I'll take guys out.
13:14Well, it's kind of funny because you asked the great Loneal,
13:17we had him on last Friday, about pre-McCaffrey's, Donnie,
13:22when he had a stable of backs,
13:24and you talked about the Niner offensive system.
13:27Is it more inclined to get a running back hurt because it's so physical
13:31and they run so hard?
13:32But you look at Mosterd, you look at Breida, you look at Elijah Mitchell,
13:36all those guys cannot avoid injury.
13:39So I don't know if it's the scheme, but when you brought that up,
13:43I kind of snickered at it like, yeah, come on, it's football,
13:46but we can't ignore the right on the table brought to you by ATCO,
13:50the fact that 49er running backs get injured even when it's by committee.
13:58And that's maybe why they have a committee,
14:01because he thinks it's important to have a few guys who can run hard.
14:05Now I'll say this to you, partner, to the caller's last point,
14:08because he made some great points and let us know how he feels.
14:13Stein, if I'm up 27-10 or 27-13, maybe early fourth,
14:19and you see it throughout the league, now everybody's not McCaffrey,
14:22you spell your number one back sometimes.
14:25Like, you know what, we'll run the ball, punt it,
14:28but a lot of times in the Pittsburgh game, game one last year,
14:32we brought this up, that was well in hand, and we saw McCaffrey out there.
14:36And I know he wants to be, but you've heard the old adage,
14:41save the player from himself.
14:43Hey, Stein, it's all good, we got this, but you're right, he doesn't do that.

14:59You know, it hit me on Monday when I was watching the Manningcast,
15:03and I think Brock Purdy had a play where he had a naked bootleg,
15:07and then it was just him and a defender, and Peyton Manning broke it down
15:10where usually quarterbacks would take a step into the defender,
15:13but he took a step back, and he was so impressed by him doing that,
15:17and just took like a five-yard reception.
15:19But at that moment, that's when I told myself, I'm a believer.
15:22I'm a believer in Brock Purdy.

15:30One of the reasons that Kyle Shanahan is a great play caller
15:34is because he gets the ball to his best players
15:38more than any other coach can get the ball to his best players.
15:44And when you say best, I'm not going to tell you,
15:47and this is no shade of Jawan Jennings or Yuzcek,
15:51but you look at the log, just, you know, the longest play went to Kyle Yuzcek,
15:56and that was by design.
15:57Kyle did his part in catching the ball.
15:59You look at Jawan Jennings, he had a long one for 22,
16:02and nobody's going to sit here right now and call 95-7 the game
16:06and say Jordan Mason is better than Christian McCaffrey,
16:10but Stani, he toted the rock 28 times for 147.
16:14So a lot of it, to me, is system now, and I think we're starting to see that.
16:18And then we could revisit history and look at the Jimmy Garoppolo team in 19
16:23offensively who went to the Super Bowl with Emmanuel Sanders.
16:28You know, obviously with Kittle, but a whole different stable
16:31of running backs, and that's why on this day it dawned on me
16:35and Monday night, especially being in the house,
16:38the brilliance of one scheming and game-calling of Kyle Shanahan.
16:43But he's clowning right now.
16:45He will never say it, but, like, Stani, I do wonder if Mason went down
16:50and the next backed-up, Garindo, what would he do?
16:54Would he average four-yard a pop?
16:56I don't know, but I'm like, I wouldn't call you crazy if somebody said that.

17:02I mean, Shanahan's proven he can run the football with anybody.
17:08So I would expect any running back to be successful for the Niners.
