00:00Hey, Gu, what's up, baby?
00:03How much trouble do you think the Niners are in at 2-3?
00:0717-game season, a couple tough losses.
00:12I'm right behind the great Richard Sherman, and it's not about the 2-3.
00:16It's what's leading them into the 2-3.
00:20So you ask me a question, I'm going to go Drew Brees.
00:23I'm at a 9. I'm at a 9, Stony.
00:26I am at a 9, and everything is involved in that goulash that gives me to spit out a 9 to you.
00:35It's the injuries. It's the unknown of when the guys are coming back.
00:39Now I don't know. I went in the lab last night, watched the game again under your premise.
00:43Did they win? They lost.
00:45Brock was just doing it. It wasn't bad. He just felt like he was doing too much.
00:49But Baldy joined Bonte and Shaski, and even the National pundits,
00:54I don't know what to think about this team.
00:56Are our guys not getting open?
00:58All of a sudden, Baldy came and joined them.
01:00Stony, I brought him up. He had said the Niners' identity right now is they're slow.
01:05And I'm just like, how the hell did this happen?
01:07And then we got news out of New York this morning that Robert Sala,
01:10who used the Niner defensive coordinator position to parlay that into a head coaching job,
01:16has got fired. We'll get into A-Rod. He's a buster.
01:19But at the end of the day, I don't know what to make of this team.
01:22And if Sala came back, which we know he's not, does he have the horses that he had when he left?
01:29So I'm sitting here like Arizona game was in their hand.
01:32They blew that. And that's two games in a row they've blown.
01:35But I don't know when it's going to get better, Stony, if it's going to get better.
01:39I'm trying to figure out whether this team is really good,
01:43but they just haven't played well, or they're not as good as we thought they were.
01:49One of the things that I always think, Goo, is a sign of a, I don't want to say a bad team,
01:55but a sign of a non-successful team to me is always when it's a different thing every game that gets you beat.
02:03And that's the way I feel like the Niners are right now.
02:07They're just, when their defense is good enough, their offense is not good enough.
02:14When their offense has been good enough, their defense can't get a stop.
02:18The special teams hasn't been great.
02:20And so I feel like every game of those three losses, it's been something else.
02:27And usually, you know, usually this team's a lot more buttoned up than it has been the first five games of the year.
02:35And I'm just looking at some of these names.
02:39Go ahead, Andre Campbell.
02:42I know. Well, no.
02:43Oh, OK.
02:44No.
02:45OK.
02:46No, no, no. I'm looking at the big names.
02:47Purdy, Ayuk, Bosa, Trent, Ward, Warner.
02:52You know, how many of those guys have really delivered this year consistently?
02:57As good as Purdy's been.
03:00He's played five games, and I think we can all say,
03:03well, you know, the Vikings wasn't a great game.
03:06He was OK.
03:08And then Sunday against the Cardinals might have been his worst game of the year.
03:13And the reality of the situation is they might not be good enough to overcome a so-so game from their quarterback.
03:23And in the past, as long as you weren't making mistakes, you were going to be fine.
03:27But they're making mistakes, and they're not buttoned up.
03:31No, I love it, Stony.
03:32And again, it's rather confusing because, again, I'm looking and searching for answers.
03:37And sometimes I can't even believe I'm posing the question.
03:40We talked about this team in the offseason, and I still believe it, but it's yet to be seen that they got weaponry.
03:46They can withstand an injury to their Steph Curry, which is Christian McCaffrey.
03:51But, you know, I don't know what the identity of this team is.
03:55And it seems like now the identity is they're going to let No. 13 Brock Purdy drop back.
04:01And, you know, I don't know if he's got a chip on his shoulder, Stony.
04:06And I talked about this the other day, about the Dinkin' Duncan reputation that he had.
04:11And, you know, that was a myth.
04:13But right now it looks like they have no identity.
04:16And in a game where the weather, you know, was 100 degrees,
04:21and you got a home game against a lesser opponent in the Arizona Cardinals,
04:26and you only give your running back, Jordan Mason, the ball 14 times,
04:30that's not Kyle Shanahan-like to me, and it has me on Tuesday mornings, Stony,
04:35thinking about does Kyle know what the identity is?
04:39Is that at home with Christian McCaffrey?
04:41Because I don't know, and every game is its own entity.
04:45But it seems like each game they're trying to do something different,
04:49and I'm putting it at the doorstep of Kyle.
04:51But those guys you mentioned outside of Fred Warner who was playing on one leg,
04:56you know, Stony, and the arm tackling, I just don't get it.
04:59The Niners, to me, were led by a bone-crushing defense
05:03that would make 60 minutes of hell for an opposing quarterback.
05:08And all of a sudden, hey, I won't even call out as a collective,
05:13this defense has been Swiss cheese.
05:16My favorite's Pepper Jack, but it's been Swiss cheese, Stony.
05:19And if that doesn't improve, oh boy.
05:23Well, that's the question I'm trying to ask myself.
05:26Is it going to improve?
05:28And if so, by how much?
05:30Because it's got to take a big step forward, I think.
05:35That's real.
05:37I'm looking at Brock Purdy, I'm looking at the big names on this team,
05:42and let's throw Warner out.
05:46Okay, quick ride on the table.
05:48Before you go, on the defensive side of the ball you got one other big name,
05:52and that's 97.
05:54Hargrave's gone.
05:56Yeah.
05:57Should we really be surprised?
05:59Because we were sold, guys were going to step up,
06:02and I'm not coming down the road of Lenora Ward,
06:05but they run the secondary, Stony,
06:07and that unit in itself is getting had.
06:11Yeah, again, I'm trying to figure out what's going on here with the Niners.
06:15And I think they are too.
06:17And one of the things I think that's going on,
06:20and it's hard to put into words,
06:23but I do think the last couple years is catching up to them.
06:26Oh, wow.
06:27And I think it's mostly a mental thing,
06:31but I feel like they thought they were one of the best teams in the NFL the last two years.
06:40They didn't get it done.
06:41They came back this year.
06:43They had a training camp where everything was disjointed.
06:46And it's so funny now because when we were watching them at training camp
06:50and paying attention and know that Trent wasn't there
06:54and Ayuk wasn't practicing and McCaffrey wasn't practicing,
06:58it felt like we were all saying, you know what?
07:00They haven't had a great camp.
07:01They might not get off to a great start.
07:04Well, they haven't gotten off to a great start,
07:05but the problem is the schedule's been pretty soft at the beginning of the year,
07:09and now it starts toughening up a little bit.
07:12And I think at this point you figured you'd probably be at least 3-2,
07:16maybe 4-1, so you'd have some wiggle room.
07:19But they don't have any wiggle room right now.
07:21Yeah, Stony.
07:22And again, it's not the Michael Jordan.
07:24It's not the 2-3 record.
07:25It's just not to me.
07:27It's what you just talked about.
07:29You and I are older.
07:30Evan's young, single, ready to mingle, right?
07:33If he goes out five days a week and goes out that sixth day, you know what?
07:39He's going to have a ball.
07:40But guess what he's going to be, Stony?
07:42Tired.
07:43Tired from the five previous days.
07:46And what I think I omitted and forgot and assumed is this Niner team
07:51during that four-year run, four straight trips to the SEC championship game,
07:55one Super Bowl, there's collateral damage in that.
07:59And it started with McCaffrey out of nowhere physically not being ready.
08:05So right then and there, partner, you know,
08:08I'm saying that load that he's carried caught up to him.
08:13So he's not even been available.
08:15Then you talk about produce.
08:17You talk about Trent and Ayuk.
08:20I thought they were going to be fresh because they were not practicing.
08:24So I don't know if Ayuk is not getting open.
08:27I know we got Ross Tucker at 11.
08:29I just want to see, you know, just his thoughts from afar.
08:32But Trent Williams hasn't had his best year.
08:35But, boy, I just don't know what you can tell a Niner fan
08:40to lead them to believe defensively we'll fix it
08:45and then offensively we'll fix or even identify
08:49why we have a red zone problem.
08:52Because that's part of the reason you're getting beat.
08:55You're leaving four points.
08:56They left 20 points on the field just Sunday.
09:00One of six in the red zone.
09:02888-957-9570 is the number.
09:08One of the things I've been talking to Niner fans about
09:11the last couple days after this loss is just,
09:13where do you think this team is?
09:15Have the expectations of this team changed?
09:18You're 2-3 right now.
09:21It's a 17-game schedule.
09:23But if I were to ask 49er fans,
09:25how much trouble do you guys think you're in right now,
09:28what would your answer be at 888-957-9570?
09:33Guru's at a 9.
09:34I think yesterday I said a 4.
09:36Richard Sherman's at a 10 if you care.
09:38Yeah, I'm going to move it to a 5.
09:41And here's the thing.
09:43I wouldn't say that.
09:45I wouldn't say that.
09:46If they're 4-1, I'm probably at a 1 or 2.
09:48But they're 2-3, which to me is about a 5.
09:51But the reason they're at 5 and not at 7
09:54is because I'm looking at the division.
09:58They could still win the division.
10:00They win Thursday night against Seattle.
10:04They're tied for first place.
10:06All they're missing is a couple tiebreakers.
10:08But are they going to turn it around?
10:11And the one thing about this team is
10:13it's something different each week that's gotten a beat.
10:16So what is the biggest issue with this team?
10:18And how much trouble do you think they're in?
10:20Or do you still think it's early enough
10:23that this thing can settle down
10:25and they can start winning games?
