00:00Hello there. Welcome to your Wednesday evening weather update from the Met Office.
00:05It turns increasingly cold through the next few nights.
00:08The wind is still coming in from a very cold place.
00:11You can see here, low pressure sits to the west of Scandinavia,
00:14squeeze on the isobars across the north-east of Scotland,
00:17where we've seen frequent showers today, elsewhere as well.
00:20But notice the source of the air still coming from the Arctic,
00:23streaming down, covering most of the country,
00:26and with that, the chance of showers into Thursday.
00:29The wind remains relatively unstable.
00:31But notice towards the west, this is high pressure,
00:34extending its influence from the Atlantic,
00:37so we lose the sting of the wind through Thursday into Friday.
00:40We lose the showers as well.
00:42But eventually, all change yet again through the weekend,
00:45as more cloud arrives and also some outbreaks of rain.
00:48Temperatures will, though, recover slightly.
00:51For the time being, a rash of showers continues to affect much of the country.
00:55That wind's strong and nagging and cold in the north and north-east.
00:59Clearer skies as those showers fade away inland,
01:02but along the coastline, they will continue.
01:05So where we see a lighter breeze, particularly inland,
01:08and those starry skies, temperature's really falling very quickly,
01:12so it's going to be a cold night,
01:14even with a touch of grass frost in the south,
01:17and in the north, some isolated air frost.
01:20And to start the day on Thursday morning, showers from the word go,
01:23and it could be wintry with some snow above around 8, 900 metres.
01:28And like this evening and overnight,
01:30the chance of some heavier downpours with the risk of hail as well as thunder.
01:35Through the day, this cluster moves in from the north channel down towards Wales
01:38as well as the west country.
01:40Elsewhere, we'll see some sunshine to start the day,
01:42but showers clipping the east coast,
01:44and then through the morning into the afternoon,
01:46they will develop inland yet again, and some will be heavy.
01:50So a mix of clouds and sun through the afternoon,
01:53some showers, one or two intense bursts,
01:56the wind's not as strong across the far northeast of Scotland,
01:59and a gentle wind elsewhere.
02:02Even so, it's a cold wind, and temperatures remain below the seasonal norm,
02:06coming in around 12 to 14, 15 degrees Celsius,
02:10perhaps a 16 for the home counties as well as the west country.
02:13Now, through Thursday evening and overnight,
02:16yet again, those showers lose their potency.
02:19We'll see some drier skies, some clearer air.
02:23The winds shift round to more of a westerly across the far north,
02:26so some showers moving in across these parts, but many areas will be dry.
02:30A few just running down the North Sea,
02:32just clipping the far southeast possible into the early hours of Friday morning.
02:36But the key feature of the weather through Friday,
02:38first thing, the risk of temperatures dipping close to freezing,
02:40if not below in the countryside, so it's a cold start with a touch of air frost.
02:44But through the morning into the afternoon, some lovely sunshine, a light breeze,
02:47temperatures slowly recovering.
02:48A thickening cloud will bring some outbreaks of rain to Northern Ireland through Friday,
02:53eventually towards the northwest of Scotland,
02:56sinking southwards through Friday and into Saturday.
02:58Cloud ahead of it, but look at this, temperatures will be on the up,
03:02so feeling a bit warmer on Saturday with a lighter wind,
03:05and then the rain straddles the country on Sunday with some showers to follow,
03:10but some brighter skies further south and southeast,
03:12where temperatures should arrive around 21 degrees Celsius, and I'll see you later.
